Hooray coachspeak. That statement is categorically true and does nothing to indicate whether or not he is going to take the UCLA job.

I think he probably stays at Butler, but ESPN also originally reported that Smart was offered the job
And I missed Chiefs post earlier

The "I'm the coach at Butler" quote was from earlier in the week. Most of that article doesn't have anything new. The only new thing is the "credible source says he stays at Butler" part.

That may or may not be true, but ESPN has been pretty awful at covering this so far. We'll want to see confirmation elsewhere before this means anything. ESPN doesn't even have a byline attached to this, and they're all about the scoop.

Local radio is reporting that 'sources' within Butler say Stevens is staying.

I think the signs are pointing to him staying, too, both locally and nationally.

No clue. I don't think it's Shaka. That makes no sense.

It seems like it's a coach still in the tourney. No idea what that's about.

Still in tourney:
No - Boeheim, K, Izzo, Self, Matta
Maybe? - Donovan, Pitino, Marshall, Williams, Beilein
Would Not Chase (at this stage, if ever) - Altman, Enfield

That is my best breakdown of the 12 still in the tournament, subject to zero insider UCLA information.

Steve Hartman said it's going to be Pitino. Despite being an LA guy for his whole life, I doubt he has any sources. And he is an alum. Of course, it does explain the flight to Indy.

i just hope they don't poach hopkins. he's the cuse coach in waiting but boeheim may never retire.

he's our best recruiter and the way bilas was gushing over the zone last night probably caught a few AD ears

It appears that it is not Pitino.

Marshall is getting a lot of talk.

The original three targeted were Stevens, Pitino and Donovan. So with two of them not being this new mystery target, you have to wonder on Donovan.

I think we'll know before too long. Whoever it is, apparently he is close to signing to become UCLA's coach.

Keep in mind, the tourney thing is conjecture from a hint or two from those in the know, but they were far from definitive hints. I don't know that we can say if this coach is still in the tourney or not, or if he is even a college coach at all.

No one who actually follows this stuff. Unfortunately, the masses aren't among that group, and that's where ESPN makes its cash.

I would never say never, but I think you can be pretty sure you're safe there. UCLA won't hire an assistant to take over its head coaching job.

You should be more concerned that USC might go after Hopkins.

It would not surprise me if its Marshall. I've been aware of him since his Big South days at Winthrop. Seems like he can take any team and bring them success. Is UCLA too big a jump for him? Hard to say.

he's from cali and was on their radar. idk that he's option 1a but he might be 3rd or 4th on that list.

i'm the rare cuse fan that wants boeheim to retire because i think hopkins is going to be really good

The knock on Marshall seems to be his just as big of a hardass as Howland, but probably not as good of an X & O's guy.

So ya

No thank you to Howland Part II, agreed.

One of our big insiders is reporting UCLA is making another go of it at Stevens, offering "ridiculous" money.

I would actually prefer to move on. UCLA was already offering him a lot of money, and we know money wasn't his primary consideration. Don't be desperate, UCLA.

(Unless it works, lol)

He already makes pretty good coin at Marquette, somewhere in the 2.5-3 range if I recall correctly from news last offseason.

Just bringing this up because it won't be a case where a 3 million dollar offer (number said for Stevens, right?) will represent a quantum leap in salary.

Well, UCLA can afford much more than $3 M. I am not sure why that was the number they offered him at first.

Presumeably this new offer to Stevens is in Coack K/Cal area money.

I would hope so. Stevens is already reportedly making more than $1M per year, and Butler should be getting more money now with their move to the Big East. Offering $3M is nice, but when you consider cost of living in LA, I don't think it represents the kind of massive pay increase Stevens is going to need to leave his comfort zone of Butler.

Agreed, which is why Dan Guerrero is getting crucified right now for not leading with his best offer.

Prepare for an offense as slow as Wisconsin if thats the case. That said I was hoping he'd one day take after Bo at Wisconsin. I doubt he'd leave UCLA for WI though.

I dont think he's a serious candidate, but he's been on the West Coast

Certainly would make Howland seem like he's doing 40 minutes of hell

I am pretty sure the Bennett rumors are BS. UCLA is not hiring a slow ball coach.

Honestly, I would be shocked if the new coach at UCLA, whoever he ends up being, has even one thing in common with Ben Howland.

Michigan needs to play more of their 1-3-1 zone. Their regular defense sure isn't helping.

I'm not sure why Michigan is so hellbent to not run the 1-3-1. Michigan's interior defense is so laughable at points it has to help to switch.
