But I can't imagine any rationale for what happened. I didn't see any resistance, sure there may have been "resistance" based on the definition and some words may have been exchanged that we didn't hear, but after watching the available videos, I can't imagine any valid reason why the cop did what he did for that long period of time other than a blatant disregard and ill-placed sense of superiority/power (no, I'm not calling it racism ... yet).

So yeah, that cop should be fired. Not sure I understand or agree with the rationale on the other 3 that were fired though. Yes, the community should be pissed but no, they shouldn't be setting the police station on fire. Go ahead and ask Kapernick and LeBron for money to organize and make changes.

yeah cause sometimes you feel like a murdering nut

sometimes you dont

100% this.

After Jamar, Justine, Philando, and now this, what exactly do they think would happen? Peaceful protests did not get a conviction in any of those cases. The Hennepin county attorney already said today, "There is other evidence that does not support a criminal charge."

These smug murderers keep getting away with it time and time again. And time and time again, white moderates moan about how the protests have gone "too far". They'll complain about the the protests going too far whether you kneel during a national anthem or burn down a police precinct. They're far more bothered by looters than by the acquittal of state-sanctioned murderers.

If you think this is bad, just wait until Derek Chauvin is acquitted.

Lived in Minnesota for 5 or 6 years. The police was always horrible and there wasn't cameras around like there are today. There have been multiple high profile cases of cops murdering citizens in the Minneapolis area with no recourse.

The fact this cop wasn't arrested almost immediately is absurd. It would have stopped all of this. At some point you fight back. I still think the side that is destroying property has the moral high ground on the side that murders.

I'd also say the President quoting an openly white supremacist Police Chief from the 60's tonight over this is more reason to start fighting back.

People loved the movie Joker and even sympathized with it. The movie even sparked a mental health conversation.

Well, this is Joker in real life folks.

Btw, there have been videos of supposedly cops vandalizing businesses.

And there have been a history of provocateurs starting riots...

If we had a Justice department, there should be an investigation of this police force from top to bottom. It needs to be completely cleaned out, as well internal structures put in place that would serve to immediately penalize excessive force. Of course, no administration has been willing to take on police unions. They are too afraid of being "soft on crime."

I was watching the live stream. Some protestors were saying they were trying to start a gas leak in order to blow up the station because the sprinklers were preventing a massive fire from starting.

Watching last night I'm guessing there are really 3 segments of protestors:
1. Peaceful ones
2. Formerly peaceful ones that have had enough
3. People that just want to burn and steal shit

I have no idea what the percentage of each is, but I know the damage and media coverage is going to be focused on #3.

I think we all know that these protests draw a lot of people who give zero fucks about injustice, they just want to steal and destroy shit.

Anger is understandable, blatant criminal activity for the soul sake of wreaking havoc on innocent peoples livelihoods and getting free shit is not!

Minneapolis City Council Vice President Andrea Jenkins said George Floyd and fired police officer Derek Chauvin knew each other for many years because they worked security at the same night club. Both men worked at El Nuevo Rodeo on Lake Street before their last encounter.

Another thing that I've been thinking about:

This could've been me. This could've been Ben. This could've been any number of Black men that you know. It happens and has been happening for a long time. At the end of the day. some cops don't see that I'm a father and law abiding citizen. They don't see that Ben is a religious leader and a law abiding citizen. They see a Black man that has to be put down by any means necessary.

Is it all officers? No, it's a small number. Do I know if I've hit the lottery when a police car drives past and stares at me as I drive through a neighborhood that many Blacks don't live in, like the one I live in? No, and for a second, the concern hits, then dissipates. It's something you try not to worry about because it's just a part of life that you deal with. But why should I? Why should Ben? Why should anyone have to deal with that?

And it's something that's hard to understand when it's not the way you've had to live. When that's not a concern for you, it's easy to believe those people who have problems with the police have done something wrong because that would never happen to you. Just know, that's not always the case. Sometimes, a Black person can do everything right, be calm, and comply to every order, and still end up dead.

And that is a feeling that's hard to put into words.

Not sure how accurate but a start to understand the scope of the problem of "bad cops".

There are approx 800,000 police

Law Enforcement Facts - National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund
Quote:
There are more than 800,000 sworn law enforcement officers now serving in the United States, which is the highest figure ever. About 12 percent of those are female.

According to USA today, there were 85,000 cops investigated over the past 10 years. So it's not a matter of 85,000 / 800,000 = 10.6% as the 800,000 is as of a point in time. I don't know what the number of police is over the past 10 years but it seems 10.6% is the "high" of bad cops (or at least those that were caught) but likely less.

Anyone have any links to articles that try to define the # or % of bad cops?

Police misconduct: Discipline records for thousands of cops uncovered
Quote:
At least 85,000 law enforcement officers across the USA have been investigated or disciplined for misconduct over the past decade, an investigation by USA TODAY Network found.

Staring at that post, take a look at this thread. Videos and testimony that much of the violence last night was started by group of white people in the crowd. It almost seems that there was a organized effort to make sure these protested turned violent to discredit the message.

MN officials are saying the vast majority of arrests last night were people from out of state. I don't think there's a singular explanation for the various riots, but there does seem to be some element of organized vandalism coming into the protests, and based on videos, some of that is driven by white youths.

I wonder what role Russia is playing in instigating these riots. It's these kind of circumstances they like to target.

I don't know what group the people belong to, but there are definitely outside forces at work here. Wouldn't be the first time that outside forces took advantage of a situation to stoke violence and to discredit a protest, especially one involving a group that many believe are aggressive and violent.
