I know of Bud Norris. I only today heard the name of Fernando Abad, since this is getting a fair amount of play:

Never heard of the other 2.

That's actually a pretty good throw to first

Can you call a runner out for being out of the baseline even if he doesn't interfere? Dickey was closer to the mound than the 1st base line, it seems.

Even better tackle.

I believe the rule is that you can only be called out in that instance if you run there to interfere with the throw or to avoid a tag. I'm sure his intent was to make the throw as difficult as possible, but since it didn't affect the throw, he can't be called out.

MLB.TV premium is only 10 for the remainder of the season today....I went ahead and picked it up because it looks like an exciting stretch run. Can't watch my Cubbies live though due to MLBs horrid blackout rules.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how a guy drops a ball in fair territory but the ball somehow ends up going foul.

The next time David Price has to pitch in Arlington, I'm sure it will be too soon for him. He just can't seem to pitch there. The Rangers roughed him up for 6 run in 4+ innings tonight.

Pretty impressive that the Bucs are above .500 with the poo poo platter of free agents that they signed this off season:

Clint Barmes ($5M) - .223/.250/.318 in 391 PA
Rod Barajas ($4M) - .199/.276/.337 in 301 PA, thrown out 8% of base stealers (66 SBs)
Nate McClouth ($1.75M) - .140/.210/.175 in 62 PAs and released
Erik Bedard ($4.5M) - 5.01 ERA/1.472 WHIP in 125.2 IP and released

I'm not very convinced we will finish over .500 as of now. Still need to go 14-20 and there are not many "easy" games left. I gave up on the playoffs a few weeks ago.

Damn, Yadier Molina got fucking steamrolled by Josh Harrison of the Pirates. Hope the guy is ok, he did hang onto the ball.

Hilariously awesome play in the Giants/Astros game.

Some Astros dude hit a pop foul to left. Sandoval did this awkward backwards leap thing for it, couldn't hang onto it, flipped it into the air and Crawford made a diving catch.

I think that's the first 5-6 foulout I've ever seen.

Was the Astros guy Fernando Abad, the pitcher? That would just add to the hilarity.

Fucking Dodgers are about to go 1-3 since the trade. And 1-7 in the last 8. So much for a playoff run.

Yu Darvish threw 7 shutout innings, striking out 10 and only walking two, and the Rangers beat the Rays 1-0. I was hoping that the Rangers would win at least one of the games against Price or Shields, and am happy they got both.

Damn Frazier is awesome. Thom (and RedReporter) suggested Bruce to CF so Frazier/Ludwick can play corner OF every day... I'm not completely against it. Stubbs is batting .199 against RHP

I don't think Bruce in CF would be pretty.

I think the answer is to just put Frazier at third base. Give Rolen a start every 3-4 games. But it won't happen.

Angels' season saving comeback tonight against the Red Sox? Long way to go, too many teams in front of them, just not likely.

That said, they needed tonght, no matter what. So good win Angels.

Not like the Braves have done much the past two weeks to get themselves setup to be in a position to take advantage of it.

That is the one saving grace, but 4 games is a slim margin.

He is so fascinating to watch, just as a case study. I find his overall totals remarkable in that despite having watched him all season I can't fathom how he's at .250/25 HR right now.

Totally agree. Just an interesting ball player to follow.

I looked up his post-All Star stats and he is at .274/.364/.493 in 146 ABs with 9 HR and 57 Ks.

Push that out to a full season and he is something like 35 homers with 220 Ks, with a pretty strong slash line (even more so if he can stick at 3B).

He's still only 25, but I really don't know what to make of him. He could be out of baseball by the time he is 28 or 29 or he could be an All Star.

Another interesting thing is that he was awful in the 4 hole. Hitting further down in the lineup has sort of mitigated his effectiveness when he is effective.

I'm not sure I like this new wild card format.

The Orioles and the A's are tied for the 2 WC spots today. I'm going to be pissed if the Orioles end up beating out the A's by 1 game to claim the #1 WC spot only to lose the 1 game playoff with them and not make it to the division series.

Just doesn't feel right, regardless who that happens to.

Last night's ninth was weird, and the Angels' announcers brought it up. Valentine diodn't even have anyone warming up during the top of the ninth to get someone ready in place for Aceves, and didn't even get one started, I don't think until the Angels got two runners on. He only walked up to the dugout steps on the questionable HBP call on Aybar. Just odd decisions.

And that was after last week's series, where the Angels announcers noted Valentine didn't jump to do a thing last week on any controversy call at all (they specifically brought up a questionable homerun the Angels hit; I forget which one it was, but it was one the umps could have reviewed).

To my mind, it seems to me that Valentine knows the team has cashed in its chips on the season, and has basically sided with him against the players. And that he's just playing out the string to get to the offseason, so that they can get "his" players into the organization.

I am still struggling to understand how a guy like Valentine can acquire that much influence so fast.

It's bizarre. If you watch certain stretches you'd think he'd have 40 homers already. If you saw other stretches you'd wonder why he isn't in AAA

Basically. At least it makes winning the division matter. And my case for the expanded playoffs is that 2nd place non-qualifiers already get a (albeit small) playoff share anyway. They have since the playoffs expanded. So at least now the one game makes more of them earn it. Not that it covers all of them, but still.

Valentine won't be here in 2013.

It was never a Valentine or the players issue. They are all rotten.

Seems like the logical play is for the Sox to keep losing here. They can easily get into the top 10 of the draft, and possibly up to about 6th. More importantly, if they elect to sign a comp free agent, picking in the top 10 will enable them to keep their first rounder. In their current position of 14th, it would be forfeited.

Finally saw the Molina play. Good shit that he got blown up if he's blocking the plate in game 130ish.

Dude is just amazingly good - not sure if the general fan appreciates just how dominant he is.
