Clean play. Complete play on the ball. Obviously Noyer took advantage of the chance to be aggressive but it was legal.

Yeah, I get that. Don't see how the ref could call a foul on Higuain there.

Momentum feels Argentinian to me. Can Germany steal it?

EDIT - That has change, nevermind. Germany stole momentum.

Oh I didn't see he called a foul on Higuain. That's kinda funny. You're right, there, that's BS.

Because goalies are rare creatures and should be protected like unicorns.

Think the legs are a little too heavy.. this is going to PK's I think

I hope not. It's a World Cup Final. I hate the thought of penalty kicks to decide a champion. Like deciding game 7 of the finals with a free throw-a-thon (albeit with a center standing in front of the rim).

Yeha, but you'd never have a more nerve wracking final to a major game like thaT!

Plus, I'd rather see a PK that do what the NCAA does.

Argentina will need to win in in extra time. You don't want to take on the Germans in a penalty shootout.

I wish there was one goal just so that the other team has to attempt to score rather than this whole silliness where there's just a feeling out with no real attempts to score except on easy counters.

Why not keep playing OT periods until a team scores instead of PKs (think: NHL playoffs)?

Because the legs couldn't take it. NHL, you spend half the time sitting on the bench. By the time extra time in soccer ends, folks have run approximately 10 miles.

Hell, I'd prefer the real old days.. didn't get a winner? Three (or seven) days later, you do it again. Keep replaying until you get a winner.

Wow, the ball just bounced about a foot too far away from an easy goal for Argentina

While that sounds like a lot to us, that just isn't that crazy to them. And there are breaks between each OT and at the OT "half".

A rest of 5 minutes at the end of regulation, and 1-2 minutes tops isn't enough rest, there's too much lactic acid build up in the legs)

When your game only allows 3 subs, each once, and that's it, you don't have teh infrastructure for overly long post-game extra periods.

Wait? What? Too much lactic acid? I know I'm not a doctor but that seems dubious to me. We're not even talking half a marathon. There isn't some human limitation that at, say, 13 miles or 120 minutes of running your legs suddenly fall off or lock up from too much lactic acid that would be been ok at 12 miles and 115 minutes.

This does seem reasonable. However, again, there are ways to do this (one additional sub per OT or whatever). What is the /real/ reason- not the stated one on paper- that we go to PKs?

It *USED* to be that if any knockout game was tied after ninety minutes, they replayed it 3-7 days later. Sometimes it got ridiculous, for example, in 1971, Alvechurch and Oxford City had to play each other SIX times to get a winner ( 22 November 1971: The longest-ever FA Cup tie finally finishes | Sport | The Guardian )

There's never been a rule for "unlimited OT", it's always been Extra Time, then replay or PKs

That's kindof an interesting way to do it. However, yeah, the unlimited replays- wow. That would be interesting.

marathon is different from soccer, marathon is long term efforts of similar rythym. Football is much more stop-start stop-start at sprinting speed, harder on the muscles.

The frustration upthread with me lies in that the last 10 minutes were more exciting than the previous 110 put together because there was a real desire to score, at least for one team.
