I think that you are right, in part b/c NFL coaches are so risk-adverse that they will just pick 20, knowing that it is the "safe" number. But, if I were a coach, I might pick 19. Because I know that I'd rather have the ball on my 19 than my opponent have it on his 20. I'd guess that my break point might be the 15 or so. Though, if I had the 99 Rams, I'd probably take the ball at my own 1. And, if I had the 02 Bucs, I'd probably guess 30 just to make sure that the other team is likely to get the ball in its own territory. |

Coaches already get rakes over the coals by the media for decisions that don't work out. Can you imagine what would happen to a coach whose team doesn't even get the see the ball on offense using this system, in the playoffs no less? This sort of thing might just push some of the higher-strung guys out there right over the edge.
Not saying it's necessarily a bad idea, but I think coaches would hate it.

Since we're posting stolen ideas in this thread, I really liked the idea where you just continued the game if it's not over at the end of regulation, keeping possession, down, distance, yard line all the same as it was when the game ended.

I think they should play a full 15-minute period of arena football for overtime. And they'd have to actually move to a building that plays arena football. So they'd stop the game, drive over to the nearest building with arena football, and then play the overtime there. Now that's football.

I kind of hope Thomas Jones signs with the Patriots or dolphins just so that the jets look foolish. I think that he has at least 2 good years left.

Yeah in an uncapped year, why wouldn't you just keep Jones? 1 years, $5.8M isn't bad for such a productive back; let him walk next year. I would imagine he will end up making more than that in FA in terms of a guarantee - wouldn't a San Diego or someone give up a 4th or 5th round pick for a short-term commitment like that, and then draft another back to go with him?

He played last year for something like 1.5M, knowing damn well they weren't going to honor this season's contract. With no cap, cutting someone to save some money is not a prudent move. Yes, this could be the year where he is running on empty. But ultimately you're a worse team by risking it. Now if there was a cap, I could see trying to save money. But there isn't.

Lions apparently getting DT Corey Williams for a 5th. Love this pickup. Still allows us to take Suh or McCoy if we so chose. He was out of position in Clevelands 3-4, but had 14 sacks in his last two years in GB.

The chargers are extreme beneficiaries of the new RFA rules. Instead of having to guarantee merriman, McNeil and Jackson in excess of probably 50M, they retain them for less than 10M in salary.

Sounds good. I know it's not going to happen and there are question marks regarding the knee injury, but I'd love the Lions to take a run at Kampan. Another guy who was forced to play totally out of position in a 3-4, but was fantastic in a 4-3. I keep hearing the Lions may make a play for Vanden Bosch given their desperate need for a pass rushing DE and his connection with Schwartz. Personally, I think Vanden Bosch doesn't have much left in the tank and had his best years along side Haynesworth.

He's never been a good rusher besides when Fat Albert was healthy but hes a great run stopping DE. I too want Kampman but I think he is going to get a ton of money from the Eagles or Bears. KVB would give us good depth but he won't be much more then a solid DE. |

Nate Burleson signs a 5 year deal with the Lions. He's inconsistent but we need weapons for Stafford. You could do a lot worse. I like it.

Is there a primer in this thread for just what the effect of the "uncapped season" is on a team's potential moves?
I always figured it meant, "Spend away, owners!", a la baseball (without the revenue sharing), but I have now read too many times about teams not being able to do much under the "rules" of the uncapped season. Huh?

Awesome, thanks, DeTox. Some of the Final Eight stuff is throwing me for a loop, but I am guessing I'll figure it out as we go along.

Antonio Cromartie to the Jets for a 2011 3 (possibly upgrading to a 2). Toughest AFC pass defense just got better.

Yahoo Sports' Jason Cole confirms that the Lions are expected to sign free agent Kyle Vanden Bosch by Friday.
Coach Jim Schwartz wasn't waiting outside Vanden Bosch's house for no reason early Friday morning. It's unclear how much the Lions are willing to pay the 31-year-old, but his addition could seal Dewayne White's fate in Detroit. Another solid signing. Not amazing but solid. |

a friend of a friend that my brother knows in Carolina with relations to the team tells my brother that the Panthers are very likely making a move for Vick, and talks have started.
I'm unsure how reliable he is, but he's been right before, I'll give him 65% chance at being right. If this happens, I am unsure how I feel yet, as almost anything is better then Delhomme was statistically, and Matt Moore is far far far from proven ( can't believe some of the fans saying Moore is the new face of the franchise after what? 5 games? lol) Vick would be interesting however, so we'll see.

woohoo and their was much rejoicing! I like Delhomme really, but he just fell completely apart after that Cardinals playoff game and signing him to that extension was a big mistake. Apparantly Michael Vick wants to play for the Panthers, so the celebration may be short-lived if that happens. |

Very disappointed my Cards did not resign Karlos Dansby. He was their best linebacker and their already shoddy defense is even weaker now (along with releasing Antrel Rolle too)

I wonder what happens with Delhomme?
Surely no one gives him a starting job this season, but is he so damaged that he'll have trouble finding a backup job for a decent/playoff-ish team? |

Yeah, I'm not convinced what Vick does for the Panthers. Does he even put butts in the seats at this point? Unless he's willing to be a receiving threat to help loosen up things for Steve Smith? I'm okay with giving Matt Moore a shot. He needs to prove more before I go touting him as the "face of the franchise", but he does appear to be a good fit for this offense. Especially with all the other holes out there that need filling, especially along the defensive line.

I never exactly understood how collusion works in pro sports, but couldn't the owners just get together and put in a cap w/o involving the union? I'm sure there is some legal reason why they cannot, but if they all just sort of come out and say that their budgets are around X per year, is that collusion?

Yes, that would be collusion and would threaten their antitrust status.

It wouldnt' so much "threaten their antitrust status" as it would be a potential violation of the antitrust laws. It's essentially an agreement to fix wages of players. Setting a cap through collective bargaining is legal, setting a cap through agreements outside the collective bargaining system would, very likely, be considered a per se violation of the Sherman Act. This is one of the issues at stake in the current antitrust law suit pending before the Supreme Court regarding NFL licensing and apparel. The NFL is looking for a complete exemption to the antitrust laws by arguing that it is a single entity for antitrust purposes. A single entity cannot conspire with itself and, thus, would be immune from lawsuits alleging collusion among the various individual franchises. The NFLPA has already said that it is going to carefully monitor the types of offers made to free agents. They are looking for evidence of collusion.

It's definitely an upgrade to the DE position, but that bar is very, very low. I am not thrilled by the (apparent) signing. He will bring in some veteran leadership and is good against the run, but this is a passing league and the Lions are still woeful at putting pressure on the QB. I don't see Vanden Bosch as a ton of help there. Still, you add Vanden Bosch, Williams and if the Lions draft either Suh/McCoy, you do have 3/4's of an actual NFL caliber defensive line, something the Lions haven't had in a long, long time... I guess Schwartz was in Tennessee in Vanden Bosch's driveway at midnight. I suppose they have a relationship and you do what you have to, but Vanden Bosch, again, doesn't seem like he's worth that kind of theatrics and it would be terribly embarassing if he didn't end up signing after Schwartz went all "Say Anything" on him.

As far as I know the Lions have on CB on their roster: the injured Eric King.
They need to do something about that as well.

I guess it's official now. Vanden Bosch to the Lions: 4 years, $26 million. Not sure how much is guaranteed.
