Could it be that he just doesn't make a good impression during interviews? That no matter what kind of coach he is, he just doesn't convey the type of presence and vision for a franchise that a team is looking for? There are plenty of assistants out there who always come up short, and I'm sure it's the things we don't see that cost them the job. Not to mention, it's been quite a while since he was a head coach, so that argument loses steam the longer he's out.
I mean, if a guy like Dennis Green can get another chance - and I firmly believe the only reason it took him so long is because of the freak/side show he was in Minnesota - then race can't be a factor. Maybe it is, but more likely it's something not so obvious, or hidden from the public, that has cost him that second chance.

Why? His 12/19 TD to INT ratio or his 62.3 rating and 17 games started all at least five years ago? By comparison, Fiedler is 68/66 and 76.9 with 60 games started. Garcia is 123/65 and and 87.2 81 games I know which ones I'd rather have as a backup. |

I'm sick of all the Shell talk. He was ok but no more or less qualified than the next shmoe.
Sometimes franchises want to go with the college guy or personal relationships. Shell is doing just fine in the league office. I haven't seen a full court press from this guy so who knows if he even wants to coach now.

The NFL should just stop giving any of them tickets.

Yeah I guessed I missed that. I really could care less about Garcia or Fiedler. I made my argument based on the "that guy is a bum" mentality that gets thrown on certain QB's after some failure as a starter. But really, what do people want? We're talking about backups. Also, there seems to be a love affair in some circles with Pederson when in reality, he hasn't done much of anything. Of course, playing the last five years behind one of the most durable starting QB's in history hasn't given him much of a chance. |

No big signings today (yet).
LB Donnie Spragen (Broncos) signs a 2 year deal with the Dolphins. Falcons sign LB Ike Reese (Eagles). Cardinals re-sign DE Peppi Zellner to a 2 year deal and they have released QB Shaun King. Chargers sign WR Keenan McCardell to a 2 year extension. Niners coach Mike Nolan says Barlow is their man. The Colts have told Drew Rosenhaus that they are not looking to sign Edgerin James to a long term deal and they are willing to trade him. |

The Lions had Brad Johnson, Corey Bradford, and Rick Demulling in town today. All left without signing contracts. They said that Johnson is off to workout for Chicago, while Demulling will have an offer on the table from Baltimore.

Speaking of playing the race cards, I'm guessing that making racist remarks about your own players isn't quickly forgotten by those around the league. That's one guess as to why he doesn't have a job. |

Since its obviousy equality that is the main focus of hiring more black coaches I think someone should spearhead the "more white RBs" movement. Its only fair.

How can you trash Schottenheimer?
He is 60 games over .500 in his career and has only finished under .500 twice in 19 years. |

Cause saying something dumb to punching a fellow assistant who is not on team the next year (Jeff Fischer was that 'somebody') is the same as making racist remarks about your players? Sorry, but actively engaging in clubhouse disruptive activity puts you on the bottom rung of coaches to be hired.

The Giants have withdrawn their offer to Plaxico Burress, not sure who's still interested in Burress at this point. Looks like he won't be getting the Muhammed type money that he'd wanted.

Vikings | Could Pursue Sharper - from www.KFFL.com
Thu, 10 Mar 2005 11:27:04 -0800 Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, reports the Minnesota Vikings could pursue S Darren Sharper, who is expected to be released by the Green Bay Packers in the coming days. Wouldn't be bad if they fail to land Darius. |

I believe the Vikings are the only team that still showed interest in him, but it wasn't that great. Hopefully with some lower contract demands they could land him. The Giants were the only other team realy interested in him, the Eagles were rumored to be denied it, and the Steelers aren't interested in bringing him back. I think he could be a good pickup at the right price.

Brett Favre will be playing in 2005.
WR Mike Williams has met with Bears GM Jerry Angelo. The Buccaneers have been impressed by him. The Broncos have matched the Jets offer for TE Jeb Putzier Niners sign K Joe Nedney to a 1 year deal. |

Wow, so the Browns will have essentially traded a #1 overall and a #3 overall for the grand total of a fourth-round pick. That's quality right there.

Here's hoping the Lions can nab DeMulling and Brad Johnson and maybe Troy Brown for WR depth, and put a capper on another solid Free Agency period.

I would rather they drafted a guard in the 2nd round. Pick up a DE in the 1st and draft David Baas(OG/C out of Michigan) in the 2nd. Johnson has got to be the choice as a backup. |

I'd love to get Baas but from all accounts he's moved himself possibly to the late first round. If we could get Elton Brown out of UVA in the second, it'd be nice, but I wouldn't want to risk going into camp without a true Guard if we can't get those two. Dan Cody seems to be our guy at #10, but who knows. I'd like to see him or Derrick Johnson. DJ would give us the fastest group of LB in the NFL. Boss, Lehman, Johnson? The playmaking potential would be unreal. |

I would prefer Cody over Johnson at this point but I am not enamored with either one. Johnson had real trouble shedding blocks this year. Michigan chipped him in the bowl game and he didnt play well at all. I think Millen has decided the most important thing is putting money in the secondary and defensive line. I dont see us spending a first rounder on a LB because so much money is already tied up in CB, S and DT. If I was Millen I would also give some interest to Cosey Coleman the Guard out of Tampa who I believe is a FA. |

I wouldn't mind seeing the Lions getting Baas in the second round. The worry is that the Lions, in all likelihood, would be starting the season with 2/5 of it's offensive line (Baas and whoever starts at right tackle Rogers/Butler) with absolutely zero starting experience. Looking at mock drafts, they have the Lions taking almost any of the following: Heath Miller, Derrick Johnson, Shawnee Merriman, Erasmus James, Antrell Rolle, Pac Man Jones, or Marcus Spears.

Indeed. Dan Cody is probably the top choice because Kalimba Edwards has been bust. Redding is better from the inside, and DeVries is a solid player but nothing to hang your hat on. I'd Cody on the other end of Hall with Rogers, Wilkinson and Redding opening up the middle is a nice thought. Also, I keep forgetting that James Davis and Alex Lewis showed some good signs last year. I'd Bailey being back is huge, and I can live with he and Lehman on the outside with Holmes plugging the middle. I just can't see any other position being taken but DE, OG or off chance, LB. |

I keep reading in the local papers the Lions have no worries at the RT spot. I think they feel Rogers will be as good as McDougle (I beleive its Rogers, it's been a while since I read the report) but in any case, they are two 7th round picks. Rogers has been solid though in the limited time he does see the field, and playing next to Woody will be a plus. A first three picks of Cody, Baas, Shazor would look nice. Shazor in the third is a stretch, but he could be a guy who could sit behind Brock for a year, learn the ropes, and become a force. |
