Ksyrup, about your "super relievers" I have been trying to check for this on various teams in the league I am currently messing with. I think it may occur because the team simply has too few relievers on the roster - I've noticed quite a few times that the AI teams have barely fleshed out their reliever corps, on the depth chart they might have 1 closer, 1 middle relief, and one set-up man, and maybe a fourth guy. If they run like this all season long, it's definitely going to cause some of those guys to rack up some huge innings.

That is only true if you are not on the 40 man roster. If you are on the 40 man roster, you burn an option for spending "any part of" the year in the minors. Teams hold players rights for 4 or 5 years before they are eligible for the rule 5 draft, so there is no need to place them on the 40 man roster until then (unless you want them to play a major league game). So newly drafted high school guys can spend 5 years in the minors, then be placed on the 40 man roster and have 3 option years left.

When I go to download from my online league (FOOL-X for the moment), the dialog just sits there without reporting anything (the OK button doesn't even change states to let you know the click went through) while it downloads the file. Very, very confusing.
Getting used to the new interface, although I need to investigate the Widgets feature so that I get more windows instead of wider ones when I up the resolution for my widescreen monitor. When we actually sim some stuff I'll comment on gameplay.

Wowza. Just had an insane end to the second season of my Reds career.
At about mid June we were 11 games up in the Central. By September 1st the Brewers and I were tied for the Central. By September 17th I was 10 games back of the brewers and battling about five teams for the Wildcard. With one series to go, I was tied for the wildcard with the Cardinals, and the Astros, Braves, and Dodgers were 1 GB. I took the first two against the Dodgers, and going into the last game the only team to worry about was the Cardinals who were 1 GB. They won, and of course, I lost. One game playoff time. The good news for the Redlegs? Albert Pujols was done for the season as of October 1st after swinging his way to a possible MVP trophy. We join the game in the sixth inning. The Reds are up 5-0. Ankiel hits a two run shot. Followed up by a home run by Allen Craig to make it 5-3. Uh oh. Top of the 7th, up 2, somebody and I forget who hits a 2 run double for the Cardinals to knot things up at 5. Bottom of the 7th. Tied up at 5. Reds need to do something, as the Cardinals are obviously hot. Michael Barrett gets walked. Right after him, Edwin Encarnacion gets a 4 pitch walk. Chris Dickerson hits a single to score Barrett from second. Reds go up 6-5. All they need to do is get six more outs. But uh oh, looks who is on the mound. Homer Bailey. Colby Rasmus. Single. Allen Craig. Single. Brett Wallace. BB. Bases loaded. Daryl Jones? BB. Tie game. 6-6. Yadier Molina. Single. Two runs score. 8-6 Cards. Brian Barton. Double. One run scores(Molina had been caught stealing). 9-6 Cards. Homer Bailey may have just watched his Reds playing days go bye bye. We enter the bottom of the 8th. Due up for the Reds: Drew Stubbs Danny Richar Jay Bruce Stubbs is able to get a lead off walk. Richar flys out. One down, man on first. Jay Bruce is able to get a walk after going from 3-0 to a full count. The star, Joey Votto. It's time to cement your name into the Reds history books. Strike out. 2 Down. 2 On. Brandon Phillips. You want to be the hero? Base on balls. Bases loaded. Michael Barrett? Base on balls. Stubbs scores. 9-7. Edwin Encarnacion. Is it your time to shine? Do you want to be a Reds legend? Yes he does. Grand slam. 11-9 Reds. As im sure you gave up halfway through, Ill just say that the Cards made it 11-10 with a man on 2nd and 3rd with two outs and the guy flew out to left to end the game. The Reds win the playoff spot in the one game playoff against the Cards. Needless to say, I was sweating my ass off. In case you forgot through all this rambling, I am the Reds GM. Sorry. But Im just too excited not to share. |

There are some exceptions. It's not an option unless you are assigned for (i think) 20 days. There are also a few scenarios where you get a 4th option. Some for injury, others for service time. But yes, if Strasburg signs a Major League contract in July he'll use one if they option him out. |

They would need to have an option, clear optional waivers (which is a formality teams never claim on), and if they have enough service time agree to be sent to the minors. Bart Given from insidethemajors.com who used to be the AGM in Toronto covered a lot of this stuff earlier in the year. If you are interested in it, there is great info there. |

If I wanted to get rid of spring training would that have a negative affect on the development of young players?

ST turned off shouldn't really hurt development of young players that much. Young players don't really overly develop due to spring as much in recent versions as they do just from getting consistant playing time. The main thing ST does is help shake off offseason "rust" , get some feel for how players might play if put in the majors this season, and in a very limited way a tiny help in training players at new positions (which works much better in the minors.)
If you disable ST, I believe it was suggested to me earlier in beta that the "Rust" factor should be turned off as well, but am not 100% on that. |

I've played without Spring Training since it was added and used Skydog's modifiers and had no issues because of it.

I almost never play with spring training and like everyone says, no problems with it. My reason was always because of the injuries that occur then, which tends to be unrealistic to me.

Yeah it was kind of a pain turning injuries off in October and back on in April because I lost like five guys to long-term injuries in my first spring training.

From the patch notes:
Quote:
Is anyone using this option? If so, I understand what it means, but I'm not sure what is more realistic. The new player evaluation options are now set at 40\40\15\5 which I like.. but do I want the overall rating to use these or still go by pure ratings? I'm thinking the former, hence checking that box - but I'm also curious as to why this has been added via patch. |

I am trying to figure out if that is sarcasm or not. If it is, note that the majority of those bug numbers chronologically occurred prior to the game originally being released. So likely were bugs that the beta team did report but took longer to fix. |

I kind of stopped paying attention to the threads on this, but I think it was basically an issue where no one agreed to how players should overall be rated and kept giving all kinds of conflicting responses. So this was put in so anyone who wanted to could have it based exactly how you want. I personally was fine with the way I had done it since ootp9, where AI evaluation was based on the overall combination that I then modified to be a different number than the default (which currently seems to be 40/40/15/5). Many people wanted it based differently so I guess he gave everyone an option to do it how they wanted so people would stop complaining. |

I've been on vacation with my new (and crappy) office laptop (my new, better one had some kind of hardware failure), and every time I tried to create a league on the new laptop, at some point (usually sooner rather than later), it would hang while saving the universe at 21% (saving players). EVERY FREAKING UNIVERSE I CREATED. So I've had the game for a solid week of vacation to play around with and have done nothing but invest 10+ hours and gotten zilch out of it.

Patch 2 fix list:
The previous patch contained a few issues which we wanted to address, here is the fix-list for the new patch: - Fixed auto-save funtion - Fixed missing weekly update of power rankings and monthly human team scouting - Fixed pitching rotation size selector in the team screen to allow 1- and 2-men rotations - Fixed rare truncated PbP engine outputs http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...lable-now.html Last edited by fantom1979 : 06-21-2009 at 01:27 PM. |

Gosh, I'm so relieved, I'd have been crushed if you didn't approve of ... oh, wait a minute, no I wouldn't. I had the regrettable experience of being involved with what Markus considers beta testing a number of years ago, I know exactly how he operates in that regard and I happily stand by what I said. But in the interest of clarity, just in case anyone misunderstood, let me make sure to state that nothing in my comment was meant to imply any lack of effort on the part of the beta testers.

Sorry Axxon, but I'd say there's a better chance of hell freezing over than that leopard changing his spots. Nothing anybody can ever say is going to outweigh that personal experience, it is what it is Look, I've never made much secret about the extremely strong feelings I've got about the developer in question. But I don't expend a great deal of energy on making a real big deal about that most of the time anymore either. My one-liner after the patch wasn't exactly a scathing essay, it was simply saying what I'm damned sure I wasn't the only person thinking. That particular problem -- generally speaking just release what the hell ever in whatever condition & patch it later -- is not unique to him by any stretch of the imagination and I'm not remotely a fan of the approach by any company or developer. But all in all it was still a pretty benign remark as criticism goes afaic and a hell of a lot shorter than the War & Peace version that could easily have been written instead. The only reason I made the latest comment in the first place was that I happened to see the post while clicking through to clear the unread bolding off some threads (I do that to all threads, always have, usually don't notice half the posts when doing it but this one happened to be the last one I cleared in a sequence & it stayed on screen a little longer so it caught my eye). And the only reason I commented any further today was the little blurb that sounded like a sycophant (which I've come to expect with this subject) up the thread today, otherwise I'd been pretty mercifully brief. Given the depth of my feelings on the subject, I think that's about as good as anyone can reasonably expect and I really don't feel the slightest remorse, regret, or discomfort about anything I've said. NOTE: I've edited a portion of this from the original, I merged a couple of sentences while composing & ended up saying something differently that I meant to or should have. Hopefully nobody is any the wiser & didn't even see it, if they did I apologize because it didn't end up saying what I meant to say. I mean damn, it's not like I'm bashful, so you know I usually at least try to say what I mean

I hate always having to ask questions here but it seems so much more helpful than the forums at OOTP. First of all, are the international and hidden prospects coming out for you guys this game? I havent had one emailed to me in 6 years of game time. Yet I found one on a rival team that was maxed out in stuff and control, he only cost them 400,000. I understand that happens in real baseball but I havent had one pop up. Are you guys having this problem?
Second, I can find players in the database who arent signed and look really good but i cant sign them and everytime I try to get a scouting report the game crashes....any feedback on this? I think im going to post this one as a bug in the OOTP forums. Thanks! |

Are you running 10.2.15 and have very high scouting accuracy setting? if so that is a known bug and upgrading to 10.2.16 will fix it. If that does not impact you, then yeah log it as a bug. As for the international scouting, I hate the way scouting/coaches are implemented in OOTP so don't use it, so can't help you there. |

I like Marcus and have nothing against him, but I thought I more than documented issues with players being demoted/released right after solid/great seasons last year (or maybe it was 2 years ago, I can't remember), and he apparently looked at it and didn't think it was a problem. I never understood that. A Cy Young winner shouldn't start the next season in AAA, short of losing his arm during the off-season. I still don't think the ratings/stats "sliders" work like they are supposed to. If I want the game to evaluate players 100% on stats, then the AI should be sending the Cy Young winner out there until he strings together a few Wang-starts.

I think some people are unhappy that they were beta testers, they had ideas, maybe did some research, made some suggestions for changes and when Markus didn't follow through on those suggestions or agree with them, then they get upset, take their ball and go home.

I haven't played enough of this year's version to come to any conclusions, although I am seeing too many guys switch between reliever and starting pitcher for my liking. I'll see a guy relieve for 6-8 years, spend 1 or 2 years as a starter and be good at it (and durable), then back to relieving. And I'm still seeing the "super-relievers," but that might be a problem limited to early 1900s. I won't call these problems until I do a more conventional 100-year sim (as opposed to my Federal League sim that I'm sure will cause some pretty wacky results with an additional 4-8 teams sharing the historical database with the MLB teams).
