In three years it won't matter that the Vikings "reached" on Ponder. What will matter is whether or not he is a good NFL QB. If they think he's a franchise QB, they had to take him there. If they were trying to trade out of the spot though, then in my opinion that's a pretty good indication that they aren't sure. If that's the case, they shouldn't have taken him and should have selected someone else instead.

Well there goes the predicted run on mediocre QB's. What an underwhelming draft from the 49ers so far.

can't see the Cards taking Mallet here, so I'm guessing linebacker.

I had heard the other day on ESPN about Mallet and having either character issues, off the field issues, something. I meant to look into it because I don't recall hearing anything about him getting in trouble. What's the deal there?

Put it this way, no amount of character issues could ever make me take Kaepernick before a prototypical NFL passer like Mallett.

Or not...RB was certainly not high up on the priority list, so I think this is a typical Coach Whiz best player available kind of pick. Beanie Wells can't stay healthy, Hightower's been up and down, maybe they think this guy is going to be so much better than them. But still a strange pick with so many bigger needs.

Texans taking gritty white DE's like they are going out of style. The medical reports on Bowers must be truly horrific to fall like this.

Bowers is a freaking stud. Can't believe he has dropped this far. Nothing but upside for someone at this point.

Rudolph is one of the most overrated players in this draft. He has a low history of production and a poor YPA (especially when one factors out his long catch against Michigan). He's another Kyle Brady.

Well, that wraps up the Vikings draft. Spielman hasn't found talent after the second round since he came to Minnesota.

Not much upside if you can't play. His fall is very telling for how he's viewed by NFL teams. Only Oakland hasn't passed on him at this point.

+infinity.

Lions take Titus Young. It's a need, but I'm wondering why they are avoiding taking such a need pick at CB.

I was hoping the Vikings would hold off on tight end for another round and hope to get Lance Kendricks instead. Ah, well.

I don't get it either. From what I hear, Young is a great route runner. That's all nice, but they have to get a corner & a couple LB's at some point, right? Right? A #3 WR vs a potential starter.... Maybe I just can't get excited over the Lions drafting WR's after the last decade.

I was hoping Ayers would have been there, but nope. Thanks Tennessee...

They don't have a pick until round 4 so that wasn't going to happen. I was hoping they wouldn't go for such an over rated tight end when they have serious needs at OL, DL, and DB.

Yep. You don't draft 2nd round picks for backups.

Plus he wasn't lasting that long. Would have definitely preferred Kendricks to Rudolph there.

If not Seattle, Mallett will be in the 3rd round. Just think, Carolina could of maybe had Mallet in the third and used the number one on somebody else.

And the Lions trade up to get a RB who will split time in the back field while Harris is still there. (bangs head slowly) Really, unless Nnamdiis is a lock, I'm simply not understanding filling everything outside of needs.

I like the Giants first 2 picks so far. Surprised...but in a good way.

I am starting to think Jerry Reese really has his finger on the pulse of the team & the fans. Nothing worse, as Giants fan, to sit there and watch their defense get picked apart or run down by the end of a game. That Philly loss should have taught Reese a lesson...and I think he did learn it. Not that it was entirely the defense's fault...but come on, if the offense is going 3 & out, then our defense needs to get a 3 & out to match (or hell...just dont give up 28 points in the 4th qtr). We'll lose 17-14 and be upset...but we lose 38-31 and its simply unacceptable. It isn't Giants football.

Now we need to address some depth at LB, and definitely need some Oline help(or starters really...but take what you get from the 3rd round on). Probably wouldnt be a bad idea to snag a HB with some decent potential later and likely a TE as well.

A 3rd, 5th, and 7th for a RB with fucking hamstring injuries. Like Ronnie's durability issues weren't enough?

I'm so fucking pissed right now.

Very interesting...Guess he was just massively of a higher value on their board than anyone else, for them to think of bringing in another QB to challenge Hoyer, who has looked fine as a backup, instead of going with a higher need.

Great value pick by BB there. Get Mallet mid-draft so you can groom him for the future and then either flip him if Brady keeps playing, or potentially have him as a starter if Brady is gone in 3-4 years.

I can at least justify Mallett when you are looking long term. He gets time to sit and learn from BB and Brady, but they had bigger needs than drafting two RBs.

I love how 95% of draft analysis online (not so much on this site though, which is way above the curve) is comparing the actual draft to the mock drafts and praising/criticizing any discrepancies. I'm pretty sure that I could get an A+ draft rating just by drafting strictly based on "highest mock draft guy available", and throw in a couple of 3rd rounders that have been publicly recognized as "sleepers"

Smart move by New England. Keeps Miami or Buffalo from getting him with a low draft choice.

I'm not Mallett fan at all. But it's hard to argue with taking him considering the number of picks the Patriots have and the fact that it's the 3rd round.

It's like he figures he has so many picks he just kind of tosses them around. We didn't get our guy this year? No problem, we got 14 picks coming next year.

Well he's proven to be crap at drafting RB's I guess, so he must figure he needs to grab a couple and play the numbers game.

Are we going to have a pass-rush though, or are we just going to lean on our 18 DB's to stop the pass?

Just from a casual observer, I think the Lions have had an excellent draft so far. A 3rd, 5th, and a 7th isn't that much for a 2nd. Mikel Leshoure could be an excellent complement to Jahvid Best. It seems like they're going for players they really value as opposed to trying to fill their biggest needs. This is the approach that Bill Polian seems to employ with the Colts. It used to bother me when he'd take guys like Reggie Wayne when our defense was terrible but I've come to realize he knows what he's doing. I'm not saying the Lions know what they're doing but it looks like they're going after players they really like as opposed to trying to draft players to fill their biggest needs. In the long run, I think that mentality works best.

The Pats do need to replace Kevin Faulk, in all probability. And they love to carry 5 RBs and use them as receivers. Agreed on the pash-rush concerns though.

To be fair the n isn't very large in that study.

As far as pash rush goes, Belichick must not think very highly of the options out there. Remember when everyone said what a travesty it was we didn't get surefire studs Jerry Hughes and Sergio Kindle?

True...I mean obviously that's the reasoning, but it's just strange. Who knows...maybe it's something they will address in FA or something. Not doubting necessarily...it's just interesting.
