Hell of a last couple of games for Halak. The Pens have a pretty easy road back to the Finals it seems. The two teams that really gave them fits this year, New Jersey and Washington, are both gone. I have a hard time seeing any of the other remaining teams in the East putting up much of a fight.

It's a very bitter pill for the Caps to swallow. As a fan of a team that's won the President's Trophy and been knocked out in the first round, I know how much it sucks from a fan's perspective.

I didn't get to watch the game, but just saw the highlights. Ovechkin's disallowed goal is an absolute crime.

Also, that game looked like it must have been fantastic to watch!

As someone who has witnessed Tomas Holmstrom's entire career, I have seen a lot of goals disallowed with a lot less interference than that.

Knuble (or whoever the Caps player was) was in the paint and his skate hit Halak's skate. I don't think it was a great call and if it hadn't been called I wouldn't be upset, but I can see why the ref made it.

So essentially Ted Leonsis finalizes the deal to buy the NBA's Wizards and less than 36 hours later his top-seeded hockey team is going home for the summer. Curse of Les Boulez, indeed.

Thanks for bringing that back. I was, of course, compelled to watch it again. And now I have the refrain "Welcome to Loser City! Welcome to Loser City!" stuck in my head for the second time. I had just gotten over it a little while ago too.

I guess it's better than having that god awful "Pocketful of Sunshine" song stuck in my head. I've had it for like a week now. I wake up in the middle of the night and that crap is racing through my head. I hate it.

Pretty good story

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dcs...a_tire_af.html

Quote:
So the Wangemanns were driving home to Ashburn, and they got on the Roosevelt Bridge, trying to remain optimistic about the future of the team. Then they hit a pot hole and got a flat tire. Perfect ending to the night.
So Mary Ann pulled over to the side of the bridge, and called Triple A. They said they had a heavy volume of calls, and that they weren't sure how long it would take to send help. Mary Ann and Lorraine, still wearing their Caps gear, got out of the car and watched the traffic whiz by.
"We were getting a little spooked," she told me. "You feel pretty vulnerable right there."
Finally, an SUV slowed down ahead of them and pulled over. And then Brooks Laich got out and asked if he could help.

I am horribly biased, so I'm asking help from my non-teal colored glasses friends. Is it just me or are these refs wearing red and white jerseys?

you might want to reconsider that. that might be one of the worst penalties I've ever seen called

Seto clearly got "hit" by a high stick, but it was more like a tap on the chest, not something that should have caused him to bail like that. As for the trip, he was clearly tripped, not sure how he got his face bloodied, I missed it live and on replay.

I didn't see a trip anywhere near that play. Either Setoguchi dived or the force of his stick going into Franzen's face caused him to fall.

And even if there was a trip, that doesn't nullify a high sticking penalty. If Franzen is gone for 2, Setoguchi has to go for 4. Unreal call, again by the backside ref if I'm not mistaken.

I stopped watching after 1 replay. Maybe there was a trip, I don't know. But how you don't call a high sticking penalty when his stick goes into his face before Setoguchi goes down...

First period the refs were making a lot of calls favoring Detroit, this period they went to San Jose. All I want is consistency, but not like that.

Sharks finally win a game 1 at home. Pavelski continues to carry the team along with Boyle.

Hopefully Howard continues to spit out rebounds the rest of this series.

Interestingly enough, I didn't see the high stick (and I was looking for it). It obviously happened, he didn't cut his face on nothing. I clearly saw the trip though - however inadvertent, he caught Seto's legs with his stick.

DeTox had it right - the calls flip flopped from Detroit's favor to San Jose's. I don't like it either.

Either way, that game was intense and a lot of fun to watch.

This is a little late, but everyone has the same advantage of 2 games so...

Pittsburgh over Montreal in 6- Really tempted to go 5, but I think Halak can still steal 1 game, and maybe they get one at home too. But just not sure they can hang around.

Boston over Philly in 6 - I expect these to be all low scoring games. But Flyers injuries have to catch up to them at some point, right?

San Jose over Detroit in 7 - How long can Junior Joe carry the Sharks? At some point Marleau or Thornton needs to step up for San Jose to move on.

Vancouver over Chicago in 6 - Not a fan of th goaltending of either team, but I think the Canucks have the scoring this year they haven't in past seasons, and can take advantage of shaky play by Niemi and/or Huet.

Per TSN, Staal severed tendon in his foot, "out indefinitely". Originally reported as done for the playoffs, now saying he could be back as earlier as ECF should they advance.

It must be illegal to call anything on the Bruins. Pick play goes for a goal, before that a Flyer gets punched in the face and the Bruins get a PP.

Ok we are even

So glad to see Marc Savard get the GWG on OT for the Bruins. If the Bruins advance I want them to play Pittsburgh. I think they'd have a better chance to beat Montreal but I want Pittsburgh. The rivalry with the Habs isn't the same these last few years. I want a crack at Cooke, Crosby and Orpik. Of course the Bruins have to win their current series, which is no easy task.

I tuned into the Bruins/Flyers game during the 3rd/OT intermission. Seeing that flurry of offense by the Bruins at the beginning of OT was awesome. Such an exciting thing to watch.

Hudler Back To Wings

Is he available immediately, for the playoffs?

This is interesting, because I have no idea how this works with respect to the salary cap. I presume the Wings were allowed to spend the cap space granted to Hudler by the arbitrator, since he was not playing with the club or, I assume, being paid by the club (like the injury cap release sort of thing).

If so, would they be allowed to bring him back now, this season?

Or is playoff hockey "cap free" because the cap payments are based on the regular season only? Or is Hudler not eligible for the playoffs because he wasn't on the roster/part of the franchise in the regular season? Or is he eligible, but not until the next round?

I think you have to have a signed contract by the trading deadline to be eligible for the playoffs.

To answer one of your questions Chief, playoff hockey is cap free.

Sturm really hasn't done jack in the playoffs, but the B's will certainly miss his speed and penalty killing. I think getting Stuart or Seidenberg (unlikely, but I can pray) back on the D would mean more to the team than losing Sturm.

I think you have to be back in the NHL from Europe by the 1st of the year, actually. That way, they can't get into an early finishing league or bail on the Euro team if the team sucks.

Sharks did benefit quite a bit (10 pp is certainly evidence) but that goalie interference call on Heatley at the end was (to use the hyperbole from the last game) one of the worst calls I've ever seen.

True, but screw it - after last years Sharks performance, I don't care if the refs hand us each and every game...if we're putting the puck in the net and winning games, I'm happy. The next two games should be interesting, however, as if anything the calls should shift to Detroit since they're at home.

Well, the entire first half of game one was Red Wings central in terms of penalty bias. By about the third period, it was equal opportunity horrible calls, just going back and forth like make-up calls. Atrocious.

Refs suck but the Wings last three penalties were just dumb plays by them. Cleary with a stupid slash, Kronwall with an awful hook and a too many men on the ice with under two minutes to go are awful. I do think the Bertuzzi penalty that started the 5-4 turned 5-3 that lead to the tying goal was BS but the other penalties after that were the Wings being lazy.

San Jose has played well but Detroit has given up crucial 5 on 3's that have killed them. I am not too worried yet though if we don't take both games at home then obviously the ship is sailing.

i dont know what the league directive was for officiating this post season, but it appears to have been "lets have the refs decide all games".

atrocious.

i blame bettman, and i dont even need any proof to know he is behind it.

There is a lot to be said for this simple statistic:

The Red Wings were 2nd in the NHL in fewest penalty minutes per game at 8.8. The Sharks were at 14.1 in the league, good for 23rd place.

The playoffs this year:

The Wings are 11th with 13.9 penalty minutes per game, while the Sharks are 1st at 8.2 per game.

The NHL and its officiating are becoming a laughingstock, nobody will convince me that there isn't more going on than just poor officiating at this point. Detroit has been one of the most disciplined teams in the NHL for over a decade, now all of a sudden we give up 10 power plays in one playoff game? Three 5 on 3's in 2 games?

C'mon Bettman, resign already and let's get someone in office who knows what the fuck he is doing.
