You completely knocked that one out of the park! LOVE that pick and he was definitely on my mind! Granted I had too many other choices in the 70s to use it on a flute, but this really is the best one I could think of here.

Potentially changing my bass pick, so I take my earlier statement back.

This game does kinda mess with your brain that way. Before I made my Gilmour pick I had him ready to pick for 2 days, then when it was my pick I started talking myself out of it in lieu of other people I thought of. Happy I got him. The "picking who I like the most and think is best" at least gives me piece of mind that I didn't sell out the band. Sex and drugs and rock and roll! A'ight!

5.3 Dr Dre, Producer, Hip-hop

There probably isn't a bigger influence on hiphop ever. The cat has started sooo many megastars' careers (including Snoop Dogg, 50 cent, and Eminem to name a few). Without him, I don't think we'd still have hiphop today. It probably would have gone back to the streets and still be called "rap".

wait, so explain to me how cover songs work. my interpretation was you pick a song for YOUR band to cover. it could be anything so long as it was within the categories. like

britney spears, oops i did it again, pop

and the prestige of the song along with how well your band could execute it was part of the voting process.

we just pick a random cover song from history that has nothing to do with your band? that seems silly

and another question, what defines 'pop'? is it popular success or is it a song/band specifically made to be popular? historically everything seems to be rock or funk or disco or whatever. 'pop' as a title doesn't really emerge until the early 80's... or maybe that's part of the challenge?

btw, nice pick crimson

edit: i just read the wiki for pop music and i'm still confused

I interpretted cover your way too. Pick a song and that's the cover your band does. THe example chief gave was love roller coaster - ohio players and that the restriction is that no one else can do that song even say love rollercoaster - red hot chili peppers. But we're not necessarily doing a song that IS a cover. (although most HUGE songs have indeed been covered a number of times)

As for pop it is broad yes. And that is really up to interretation. But it seems like Any non-rock and any non-country and nonhiphop would do it. And chief mentions R&B could slide into pop, like say Michael Jackson the king of pop (even tho there are elements of rock in some of MJ, he's definitely R&B)
So like R&B, dance music, lite music, ballads (although not ballads by rock groups). At least those are the things I associate with pop.

My interpretation of pop includes any band or musician that does multiple genres. Pantera: not pop. RHCP: Pop. Yeah, that's loose, but the voters will ultimately decide what they think.

so, we should probably wait for cartman then. depending on the rule clarification he may or may not wanna go with 'nothing compares to you'

right? (and it's fucking killing me cuz if plan a isn't there next pick there is no plan b. but fair is fair)

The rules don't spell out any kind of restrictions like that for a cover song. Since we are covering so many different areas and genres, it would be near impossible to find a cover song to fit into that narrow definition.

I'm the one that suggested the cover song addition and the way I interpreted it was that you pick any song (whether it is a cover or not) for your band to cover. It doesn't have to be a cover song itself, but you could pick a cover and your band will perform that version of the song. So Cartman's band is performing the Sinead version and not the Prince version.

Well, crap. If that is indeed the definition, the category should have been "Song for band to cover" instead of "Cover song".

edit: and probably a special pick at the end not tied to any of the 10 categories/sub-categories

My interpretation of cover song was also that it could be any song. It didn't have to have been covered.

5.5 Phil Spector, Producer/Murderer, Pop

Spector is widely known for creating the "wall of sound" in music and produced over 25 top 40 hits from 1960-1965. A true pop pioneer, who later delved into producing other genres such as rock and punk. Here's a couple of Spector produced hits.

First up is The Righteous Brothers' 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' which received more radio airplay than any other song in 20th Century America.

And then the song Spector considered his greatest work...

I like him, but disappointing to see him be named first for a 90's drummer. There's at least three obvious picks I would take before him.

I went with Grohl more from a recognition standpoint. I'm wondering if the other drummers on my list of 90's drummers include the three you're thinking of.

Voting/Judging ought to be interesting. Norv has a great band, performing Carol King songs .

Elvis singing Willie Nelson songs is a frigging home run, don't know about the band surrounding them though.

5.10 Paul McCartney, Songwriter, 1960s and before

Four-plus rounds after his writing partner, I'm amazed that Paul's still on the board. The Beatles were incredibly prolific, and managed to innovate while still being accessible (to the tune of 27 #1 singles). Then add Paul's long career after the Beatles, with solo albums and Wings to his credit, with "Band on the Run" at the pinnacle. Paul is responsible for "Hey Jude," "Yesterday," and this song, the most sure-fire #1 never to be released as a single (Thanks, John).

6.1 Carl Palmer, Drums, 1970s

Carl jumped into the prog rock supergroup ELP at the tender age of 20. This was a three-piece band with no dedicated bassist, so Palmer pulled double duty for the rhythm section. He's notable for the ever-present gongs behind him and his integration of the cowbell into every original song he plays.

Carl at work (jump to around 2:45 if you're impatient):
