Arkansas did a pretty good job of shutting Texas completely down, plus they had the back-to-back shutouts in conference play.

Ok, I forgot about Arkansas... but a bowl game between Texas and Arkansas is bound to be forgettable anyway.

But is it just Arkansas that was supposed to have a good defense?

Tradition, most likely.

Maintaining the 5pm timeslot was actually discussed when the Rose Bowl switched from NBC to ESPN back in 2012, and the time was contractually agreed upon.

Rose Bowl is very protective of their 2PM pacific start time.

So regardless of how this one turns out, it is insane to think that this Ohio State's 3rd string QB.

Arkansas got better as the year progressed when they found their confidence. They pretty much manhandled Texas.

I think they had better defense than many but still not top tier. Next year though ...

This has the potential to be one of the best New Year's Day the B1G has had in awhile.

Part of the issue might be parsing "good" versus "great"

Bama is definitely down (the frequent lament of my works-in-the-Bama-Ath-Dept friend elsewhere).

5 SEC teams were in the top 20 in yards allowed, 7 in the top 25 ... however

LSU (#8) gave up 27 or more 3 times, including 27 to an anemic Florida

Florida (#9) gave up 30 or more 4 times,

Bama (#11) limited most teams on the scoreboard but gave up nearly 400 yds passing to WVU, nearly 400 total to UT and over 600 to Auburn

Ole Miss (#13), see TCU game

UGA (#18) allowed 400 yds or more at least 4x

Mizzou (#23), see vs UGA and vs Bama

Arkansas (#24) gave up 35 or more 3x

In short, overall body of work for quite a few SEC defenses was good but there wasn't a single defense that couldn't be had, and it happened more than once to every one of them.

I'm just glad the BCS is gone. This is 100x better than being forced to watch what would have likely been FSU/Bama for the title.

Now if we can just get it to 8 teams.

Bama vs Oregon you mean? #1 vs #2.

I think 4 is good. Sure you might a TCU that is debatable but think vast majority of people will think the winner amongst the 4 is the national champion.

Look, we all should know there was only ONE reason FSU was in this playoff. They were unbeaten. Add the fact they were the defending champions and I don't think there is any doubt in the world they would have faced Bama and Oregon/Ohio State would have been left out.

I think the four best teams were TCU, Bama, Ohio State and Oregon. There is zero chance FSU (or any top 5 conference team) goes unbeaten and gets left out. There is zero chance the defending champions, unbeaten wouldn't have been in the title game.

The playoff saved Oregon and Ohio St from playing a game that would decide #2

I still prefer 8. The 5 conference champs, one small conference team and two wild cards to be decided.

That was definitely not roughing in my book. Don't know why Meyer is throwing such a fit over it.

This has been a pretty great game.

Pretty good summation picked up from the internets...

Quote:
Basically there are three different calls
1) Incidental contact - just a tap often caused by the kicker's motion. No one could possibly get hurt in football, but a soccer player would flop to the ground screaming for his mommy.

2) Running into - The kicker is moved but not typically knocked down by the contact. The contact is usually to the kicking leg or the body. Only a very slight chance of serious injury.

3) Roughing - This is a personal foul that could cause serious injury. The kicker is almost always taken to the ground in a very rough manner. Contact to the non-kicking leg or helmet will almost always be called roughing.

Of course they arent an SEC team like the question asked.

And remember 4 of their starters on D were suspended for that Game and then their back up DE was lost on the 2nd play from scrimmage. meaning they played the whole game with a 3rd string DE. 2nd string CB. 2nd string S. and missing one of their top 2 DTs.

And they held UGA in tact until the 4th quarter.

Well there ya go, the playoff solved one problem (letting Oregon in) and created another (letting Ohio State in).

Glad you were (so far).

As an IU fan, I have to say OSU is my least favorite Big Ten team by far, but I'm rooting for them tonight. Would love to see a non-SEC championship.
