A good place to grind for gold, exp, and loot is the Azmodan quest in ACT III.
You have a straight run through a bunch of elites, Azmodan, and a gold boss fight in the beginning of ACT IV. Solid way to level up, earn gold, and get loot at the same time.

Also, the best tip ever for AH is looking for equipment with reduced level requirements.

this game is amazing, and just keeps giving... got into an incredible group tonight, went from lvl 53 to halfway through lvl 55 and got well into act 2 on Hell....
we cleared every dungeon we came across, with some epic battles and even more epic deaths! the loot wasnt half bad either, lots of yellows! I can really really understand why it is called hell now.. act 1 was pretty cruisy, but act 2 has really kicked it up a notch.. |

Elective Mode: Bending the Rules or Something everyone should have on at higher difficulties?
Reading some builds and such at the site chinaski linked last night they all seem to assume everyone is playing with elective mode on and most builds include multiple skills from the same area. Was curious what other people thought. |

I've been playing with it on from the beginning. I figure if Blizzard, creators of DRM to prevent cheating, allows it, then its good to go.

I've messed with Elective Mode the last couple of days, but I've found that for the most part, I still end up selecting one ability from each section. Maybe this is because that's what I've gotten used to, or maybe it is because the abilities are distributed between different actual categories and I like to have a well-rounded character.
That being said, I can definitely see using more concentrated builds on higher difficulty levels, as well as for boss fights on a second playthrough, once you know what the fight will entail.

1. Rapid Fire > Withering Fire 2. Caltrops > Jagged Spikes 3. Smoke Screen > Lingering Fog 4. Shadow Power > Blood Moon Left-Mouse: Bola Shot > Volatile Explosives Right-Mouse: Elemental Arrow > Frost Arrow Just hit level 37. It's been a great combination of skills.

After Normal mode, all the bosses will very very very rarely drop rares. The only exception is until you get to level 60 and get the nephalim valor buff that makes Act bosses drop the rares.

Good farming zone i've found is the festering woods. Not very big, generally has 2 elite packs and 2 chests in the open and 2 quest dungeons that are very small and always have elites. Quick and easy rare drops. Plus an event that spawns another elite pack and gives something like 17.5k exp.

New rule: anyone wishing to use the auction house has to pass a course on basic business concepts first. Basic rules such as, "Nobody has 5 million GP to spend on a level 20 amulet. Stop that." "Nobody is going to bid 40,000 on an item when there are 25 items just like it for 20,000. LTFMR, n00b." "In fact, nobody is interested in waiting 45 hours to win a sword they're going to outlevel in three. Put a reasonable buyout bid on that sucker." "No, 100K is not reasonable when the market is sitting at 5K."
Look, just start the bid at what it vends for, figure out what an average version of the item would cost on average to make in the crafter, apply a fair markup, and post that as the buyout. If it sells immediately, mark the next item with those affixes up higher. If it doesn't sell, relist it at a lower price or woodchip it. It's not that hard. And for gods' sake, figure this shit out before the fall when the RMAH goes live and the inevitable episode of The Big Bang Theory is based around it. |

I just put a gold cap on any item I'm looking for. I refuse to spend more than 15,000 on any single item below level 50.

The auction house makes finding loot in the game as you kill enemies less exciting, since it is so unlikely to find stuff better than what you've got (considering level requirements) when you can get great items for a few thousand gold pieces on the auction house.
But I can't stop using it since I just love seeing those DPS and armor numbers increase. |

Still plugging away at the game, but I have more fun with the alts after beating Normal than I do repeating the same game on harder levels. So I've tinkered a little bit with other builds in hardcore mode and have settled in on Monk as the one I'm having the most fun with so far (up to about Level 10-15 with all). Witch Doctor will be next, as it is the only one I have yet to try.

finished up Hell mode, Inferno is kind of a pain. Had to remake a game for the first time because an elite pack was impossible. Invulnerable minions suck.
Looks like ill be farming A1 Inferno for a bit, time to start stacking MF. Last edited by chinaski : 05-26-2012 at 02:29 PM. |

I beat Hell on my monk last night, I'm hoping I can do the same on Wizard today. I'm still having fun with both but I feel like once hell started Monk lost its appeal a little and from what I've read about inferno it sounds even less appealing to be a melee. Of the guys I will likely play with frequently there is a monk, a barb and about 4 strong DPS characters, so I assume I'll end up playing both seriously in inferno based on who is around.

With all the legendary items in the AH, almost makes me not care that I haven't had a single legendary drop given that I'm fully outfitted with Legendary gear.

Unfortunately, I agree. The AH has killed the enjoyment some for me. Almost need a house rule saying 'don't use the AH' Then again, it wouldn't surprise me if loot drops were tied to the AH use.

They way Blizz made legendary gear in D3 is kind of lame. Random affixes and i've yet to see a piece that is even remotely better than a rare item. for the most part, Legendary drops are very rare, but pretty shitty overall. Ive had 3 drop, and none of them are worth a damn.. maybe would sell for 50k tops. But i routinely sell good rare drops for 200-500k. |

Well, they nerfed Azmodan xp runs. Instead of giving 2x 46k xp, the quest now only gives 9k. Boo.

Yep, started this with Monk tonight. Farmed up the staff to open Whimsyshire and the gold to upgrade it to hell and did a number of runs in there, I got a couple upgrades but a quick peek into inferno makes it very clear I'm nowhere close. |

Hey Neon, any advice on the barbarian? I am struggling with mine in the mid 20s - seems to die a lot, I charge into groups of the enemy, sometimes I survive, sometimes not, and this is with a lot of life steal and life return. Not sure if I am screwing up my character or just playing inefficiently.

Heya Pere. Like I said, always upgrade your gear every 2 or 3 levels until you hit 60. Barba are ridiculously gear dependent.

I'm not as far up the ladder with the barbarian as Neon (think Level 37?) but I recall using a lot of life stealing gear at that point, along with a ton of vitality. I focused more on having enough health to outlast foes than to do big damage.
I can go dig up some specific skills/passives if that would be helpful - I haven't played him in a couple of days because I've been having so much fun with my monk. |

A friend of mine got two legendaries in one run in Whimsyshire Hell last night, neither of us had seen a legendary yet so we got pretty excited... but they were both level 30 and awful. Our disappointment was tempered by the fact that one of them was a rainbow sword and the other was a hamburger fist weapon so that was pretty hilarious. He said they both sold for ~45k very quickly. |

I wonder if Blizzard had low drop rates for the higher up items since they figured the AH would kind of cover up for it.

Not sure that "cover up" is the right term, but it's definitely low because of the AH. If everyone was finding legendaries and set items at the rate of the first couple of games, the prices on the AH would be depressed for everything, so everyone could afford to kit out easily with fake gold, which removes the need to pull out a credit card. As it stands now, the drop rate is probably too high, if someone can equip a whole set of oranges without serious cash being dropped.

Blizzard doesnt care about the low level gear.
Its the level 60 gear that matters, and they only drop in Inferno. The difference between lvl 59 gear and lvl 60 gear is staggering. And the fact that there are several tiers to the lvl 60 gear as well.

A friend of mine who is already in inferno gave me a couple pieces of gear to get me started with resists. I wasn't able to solo just yet, but it was enough for my monk to tank for a demon hunter friend of mine to duo Butcher, we farmed that for a few hours tonight. After getting/buying a couple more upgrades, I can solo Skeleton King on inferno as well. To be fair though I think I got pretty lucky on the solo run, no fire chains elites.

WELP, hacked for a second time. I had a more secure password this time but the authenticator I ordered last monday hasn't arrived yet. I don't have a smartphone so mobile app not an option. This time I have to get it rolled back, lost all my items on monk and in stash. The shitty thing is that a friend gave me some items last night so if the rollback is before that they may just disappear completely.
Once again I ran malware and virus scans and nothing comes up. |
