Iheanacho was poor in the 1st half and rightfully hooked. Ighalo is worse (had to stop typing in case he scored just now ). Just falls over all the time

So... they get a bad penalty without VAR and then don’t get one they should with VAR to make it up? What a mess.

Didn't think the first one was bad, but that one was just pure luck for Argentina. I just can't cheer for Argentina in this one. It's really hard. It's like a whole team of Suarez's out there.

Feel a little bit of sympathy for Nigeria, but if Ighalo was more interested in trying to hold the ball up instead of falling to the floor, I would feel a lot more for them

Between the Germany finish and this Argentina game, the tension and excitement has been pretty crazy for a group stage. Quite a finish today!

Yeah, it's been an incredible tournament so far. I do feel a bit sorry for Nigeria, but they really didn't show much going forward and I don't think they deserved the win at the end there.

So does that late yellow card actually mean anything for Messi? If not then it seems a rather low penalty for having a player waste time like that.

On the second, usually it has to be a deliberate act or you are trying to make yourself bigger to prevent an opportunity. I don't think the Argentina guy planned to head the ball off his arm. Heck, his arm being there is why Nigeria got the good chance as it dropped the ball right to them.

For the first one, I'm really not sure. It was by the rules, but plays like that haven't been called all tournament. Maybe because he wasn't in a scrum and more in the open?

No, cards reset outside of the group stage. The ref gave him the yellow because giving a card in stoppage time is one way to add more time. So, in theory, the card allows the ref to add the time wasted to stoppage.

Wow, Argentina escape! But for the life of me I can't understand why Higuain is out there instead of Dybala. Like, seriously!

Ronaldo is an out and out scorer. He is very good at it, but it is all he is good for.

Messi is a more complete player, he can finish or setup other playmakers very well. That said, he has not looked right all tournament. When they played Croatia, Croatia had multiple men man marking Messi.

I think they just wanted a picture of him awake - that became more difficult as the game went on. 50+ years of hookers and blow can wear you out....

Based on the various FIFA (and to a lesser degree UEFA) individual awards, for the last 9 1/2 years, they are the undisputed best two players in the world. Cristiano Ronaldo has won the majority the last 4 or so years, with Lionel Messi finishing second, but before that it was usually the other way around.

One side of the bracket is potentially going to be incredibly top-heavy. Either with "names" or genuinely the top teams on paper.

If everything plays out normally, there could be some massive potential for a run to the finals from a real underdog. All that talk of Croatia being a dark horse before the tournament is starting to look very plausible.

Mexico already on the short end of the stick for two calls in the first 4 minutes.

If Mexico loses 1-0, it goes to "fair play" (yellow card count) between them and Sweden, right?

I've forgotten how maddening it is to watch Mesut Özil. Instead of quickly passing to a wide open winger, he dribbles across the field towards him and then passes to him when he's covered.

So is Mexico just taking the game off or something? They advance no matter the outcome right?

At 2-0 Sweden after the penalty, I think Germany advances if they win 1-0 and Mexico is out.

Yes. Surprised that Sweden got a 2nd, that was a bit of a soft penalty. But yes, Mexico is out now if Germany gets a single. That's a precarious place to be.

The combination of sloppy passing and a lack of pace makes Germany look like they are playing in quicksand.

I just have no idea what Low was doing with this team and squad selection. Ozil back in? Muller and Werner given what they have shown so far in the tournament? Leaving out Sane is looking worse and worse with every game.

What better schadenfreude? Germany fails to get out of Group Stage? Or Mexico wins first 2 Group Stage matches but fails to advance?

Sweden would have head to head in this scenario.
Still applies if Mexico trims it to 3-2.
Or a 3-way head to head with Germany.

Fair play will not come into play in this group.

I think that should've been a red card for Mexico. That player flat out blindsided the Swedish player without attempting to reach the ball.

For me it's the latter of those options. Prior to this game Mexico was a top 4 team so far.
