I saw it yesterday and I'd give it a 5/10. The plot is terrible. The backstory scenes for the characters are even worse. Marlon Wayans role as comic relief in every movie he's in wore thin about 10 years ago. Cobra Commander was done very poorly. The good? Some of the action scenes are entertaining although not all because the CGI ranges from you don't really notice it to really bad. I thought Snake Eyes was done well. That's about as far as I'd go with the good. |

(500) Days of Summer - 10/10: Absolutely fantastic film. A view of a relationship over it's 500 days. The woman's name is, of course, Summer (Zooey Deschanel), and the movie is seen through the eyes of Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), the guy. The movies goes back and forth through certain days of the relationship, seeing the good moments and signs that things may have gone wrong. It is very funny and incredibly witty (especially the final scene). It also does some very interesting cinematography; in one scene splitting the screen in half between Tom's expectation of a party and the reality of it, playing them both simultaneously to see how they mismatch. The entire film was just a brilliant look at a doomed relationship and how we tend to look at them.
And the narration reminded me, somewhat, of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"

Lars and the Real Girl (9/10): It's both funny and poignant and depressing. There's some LOL moments but it's also profoundly depressing.

The Hurt Locker 8.5/10
Loved the non-stop action and the glimpse at the human side of soldiers. I thought the movie got a little slow about 3/4 of the way thru and some of the shaky camera shots were a little annoying. I agree with a previous reviewer who said the movie really made you feel like you were there. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince 5/10 - I loved the books but it seems as if each movie get worse and worse. I just felt this movie did not do the book any justice and it did not translate well to the big screen. I really hope they do a much better job on the last book. |

G.I. Joe - 7.5/10
If you're coming in expecting a realistic-ish conversion of the cartoon into real life, then you'r leaving the theatre disappointed. I really think they did a great job of capturing the spirit of the 80's cartoons. The plot seems like it was lifted straight out of the cartoon series, specially with all the ridiculous backstories.

The Hurt Locker - 9/10 was absolutely fantastic - I really enjoyed this and I normally don't like too many war movies, but it made me feel like I started to understand what these guys go through. Highly recommended to just about anyone.

I went to see it this weekend with my wife. I went in completely expecting to be disappointed and had heard nothing but it was trash.. I actually enjoyed it and think going in with lowered expectations helped that. I didn't expect it to be a great classic movie, I didn't expect it to be exactly like the old cartoon. I just sat back and enjoyed it. It is a mindless all-action fun movie, that is all it is, and if you don't expect more than that, it isn't that bad. Of course take any of my movie ratings with a grain of salt as I am very easy going about movies and enjoy most of them. My wife left the movie complaining about it the entire time. She only complained about one part though, so maybe she was more bugged about the plot. I'll put her criticism in a spoiler:

I saw this last night and pretty much agree with your thoughts. I had such low expectations that it ended up being much better than I thought it would be. Some of the acting was pathetically bad (well, really almost all of it except for the Baroness, in my opinion), but I think it had enough nostalgia, action, and a forward-moving enough of a plot to make it pretty solid. I think that, when you consider that they were trying to appeal to children and guys in their 20s and 30s at the same time, they did a good enough job. It also helped that the Baroness and Scarlett were both ridiculously hot throughout the movie, so you almost looked forward to seeing each of their next scenes. |

Julie & Julia - 7/10 - A very very good juxtaposition between two different stories. It isn't just based on the Julie Powell book about cooking all the Child recipes in "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" in a year, but it is spliced with parts of Child's own "My Life in France". It starts off saying it is based on two true stories and it goes from one to the other with seemless integration. An absolutely brilliant gambit by Nora Ephron. And works great. I know most critics have said they preferred Streep playing Julia Childs and her work to become a chef and then writing her book, but I really like Amy Adams playing Julie Powell and trying to finish her challenge to do all the recipes in a year and blogging about it and the hardships in doing so.
Recommended for foodies, but it'll make you hungry!

Quantum of Solace (7/10): I know some people poo-poo'd all over this one, but I enjoyed it. Not as much as the first Craig movie, but it was still a good time. Overall I'm enjoying the re-imagining of Bond's character. My one knock on the movie was them trying to pass off Olga Kurylenko as a Bolivian. Sorry...I'm not buying it. I know enough about languages and accents to be able to tell the difference between Russian and Spanish. And Judy Dench remains awesome as M.
X-Files: I Want to Believe (4/10): I need to preface this by stating that I was never a big X-phile while it was on television. Sure I caught a few episodes here and there, but never really got hooked into it like so many others. But even without the potential for disappointment that others might have, I still feel like this fell pretty flat. There may have been a few redeeming scenes scattered here and there (mostly revolving around Father Joseph), but for the most part I found this to be very forgettable. Zack and Miri Make a Porno (8/10): One of the funnier movies I've seen in recent years. Definitely a movie for perverts (in case you couldn't tell by the title). There were a couple of gross-out moments I could have lived without, but those were far outnumbered by the laugh-out-loud moments. Seth Rogan and Elizabeth Banks have good comedic chemistry on-screen. And the scene near the beginning with Justin Long was fantastic. If/when you check it out, be sure to stick around for the credits. They added something entertaining in there, and not the usual comedy out-takes.

G.I. Joe - 4/10: If I could describe this movie in one word, it's "meh". Kind of a color by numbers mediocre action summer flick. Not very memorable at all. Though I do like seeing Chris Eccleston and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in big money action flicks.

Burn After Reading (6/10): Let me start by saying that I am a big fan of the Coen brothers. Their quirky comedies are some of my favorite comedies, especially Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski, and O Brother Where Art Thou. So perhaps my expectations were a little too high, but I really feel like this one fell rather flat. I understand they were trying to make a dark comedy, and perhaps that just isn't their strong suit. Instead, we were introduced to a number of Coen quirky characters, but only one of them was at all likable and that one was not given near enough screen time. Still, there were a few moments that made me grin. Brad Pitt was quite good, and if you do check this out, be sure to give your attention to the meetings between the two CIA guys late in the film...those were the sort of funny scenes people have come to expect from the Coens.

Ummm, holy crap. The best period movie ever? I think it just might be. I saw the Chinese version of the film, not the cut-down Western release, and man, just an excellent film. For those that don't know, this is an adaptation of the Chinese history/chronicle "Romance of the Three Kingdoms". Some familiarity with the book would probably help as I know it can be tough remembering all the Chinese names and who is who, but there really aren't THAT many main characters to remember anyhow. I can also see why they cut it down for Western audiences because there is a lot of stuff in the full version that would make a lot more sense if you know the RotTK story - especially with regards to the attitudes and motivations of the main characters - but I'm glad to have caught the full version anyhow. Only reason I'm deducting half a mark is because the final battle scene, while completely absolutely freaking epic, is probably a little bit too long. Seriously, can't recommend this enough. Go see it.

Great film. Very realistic, intelligent portrayal of a sci-fi premise. The effects were seamlessly integrated into the story and the handheld camera made you feel like you were a fly on the wall of a man's journey through hell. I'd compare it to Cloverfield, Company of Men, and (as far as setting goes) Slumdog Millionaire. Great film. |

Also, I just found out that the lead role in District 9 has never acted before. "Star Sharlto Copley had not acted before and had no intention of pursuing an acting career. He stumbled into the leading role as 'Neill Blomkamp' placed him on-camera during the short film." After you watch this movie, check out Blompkamp's short film "Alive in Joburg." This movie is based on that film. Last edited by JetsIn06 : 08-15-2009 at 05:12 PM. |

This movie is ridiculous so far. Cate Blanchett sounds like a teenaged Edward Furlong trying to wear big boy clothes. Will give it more of a chance, although it's hurting my will to live.

District 9 - 9/10: A very well done science fiction film obviously based upon Apartheid. The documentary style of the film was incredibly well done and really served to fill in the backstory. Some really great acting on the part of the lead (and I can't believe he's never acted before... wow!) and a gripping story line. Seeing the aliens in the slum camp and being told they have to evict, for basically humans wanting them out, was very powerful. A movie that brilliantly captures the despair of people who are cordoned off. Coupled with a Kafka-esque transformation of the main character and his fear and isolation that was wonderfully done.

District 9 (8/10) -- Somebody follow me on this...am I the only person who doesn't think this movie is about Apartheid? Perhaps the director made specific comments that it is...I have no idea...I really think it's more about the dangers that come with having prison camps like the ones we do currently.
As for the movie...there's a little something there for everyone, it's intense from minute 10 on...be prepared for a lot more gore than I read about in the reviews. Really a crazy ride of a movie. |

We Are Marshall (9 out of 10) - This was on tonight and I've seen it before. I feel like the only person who really liked this movie. Got crap reviews everywhere and no one seems to talk about it. I'm not a huge fan of McConaghey, but he was OK in this role. Other actors though were really good like Ian McShane. Feel like it captured the emotion of the accident and the aftermath real well. How important football can be to a small community. Told the story real well without turning it into a fluff piece.

The Express (5/10) -- The whole time I was watching this, I was thinking to myself, there's no way all of this is true. Sure enough, after the movie, I did some research and things definitely didn't happen as the movie says it did. It's a good story that should have received better treatment but in the process of Hollywood taking the story, the went way too much.

Zodiac (8 / 10): I have to agree with other reviews that have been posted here. Just an all-around solid, well put-together movie. It was intriguing and informative for those of us who weren't at all familiar with the case (I had, of course, heard about it and it's tie to Dirty Harry, but that's the extent of my prior knowledge). But what struck me the most about the movie was that it was a great, engaging, plot-driven experience. Too many movies today feel like they have to make the characters deep and compelling to make the movie good. Zodiac proves that a good story alone is enough to keep audience entertained...the characters in this one were truly secondary to the story itself.

It was alright, not as big a deal as I thought it'd be. It's a different kind of movie with the documentary portion, but it seemed to take a bit to get to the good stuff and by then, half the movie was already over. |

I enjoyed it, and I think I'll enjoy it more when I see it again at some point. As with all Tarantino movies, there's a ton of dialogue and character interaction that's some really great stuff, but even knowing to look for it, it's hard to catch it all. I agree, too, it could have been a lot longer, and it still would have been fine (and it was already pretty long). BTW, I am spoilering the rest of this, and I highly recommend, if you have not seen it, and you intend to, do NOT click my Spoiler tag here, because it is extremely spoilerific.

There were things I liked, but I never really got into it. It's a herky-jerky film that made me feel like QT was trying to make a Cohen Brothers movie. And i must be getting old, because some of the graphic violence was just not something I'm interested in seeing in great detail. I mean, how many scalpings were there in this movie? Pitt was awesome, of course, like he always is when he's cast right, and the German detective was a fun character, and I especially appreciated that all of the language use was authentic, especially when Pitt speaks Italian. So all in all I recommend the movie, but I don't advise bringing a squeamish date (with that said, two chicks I saw the movie with liked it more than I did).

District 9 (7.0) to me was a lot like Blade Runner. (Or perhaps a poorer man's Blade Runner.) Many of the visuals and some of the story telling ideas were unique, but in the end the story and characters are not as strong as they could/should have been. District 9 has a story set up where it could have been a great sci fi action movie with good story telling via good character interaction. (In the footsteps of movies like Children of Men.) But instead the script has 95% of all humans and aliens as unlikeable cardboard cutouts. So we get a fairly pedestrian action chase movie with a few awesome visuals; a movie that could have taken place in Utah instead of South Africa. The setting serves as a parody instead of being a truly thoughtful analogy. The best thing about District 9 is that it finally shows off what the best FPS guns could look like in a live action movie.

Very, very good comedy. Not pantheon good, but better than most. Has lines that will stick with me for a long time, I think (see spoiler).

I've got my own opinion, but I'd like to borrow a qoute from another reviewer: Quote:

Surprisingly, the reaction of the - apparently younger - audience around me told me it was a fun(ny) movie, even though I suspect most were too young to have seen the 'original'. So I guess for the action movie audience, this deserves a recommendation. For the GI Joe fans, my advice is to stay away.
