i avoid software updates like the plague. i am convinced they include minimal backwards compatibility meant to sabotage and frustrate and ultimately get you to upgrade hardware.

inevitably, there comes a time when you need to use something that requires such and such version of your os, itunes whatever. so i take the plunge and hope for the best.

now, my once like clockwork imac is all pinwheels and crashes. i'm sure this will continue until i reach critical mass and buy something new.

Actually Apple does an outstanding job of including backwards compatibility in most of it's software for older machines. Yes, it does get to a point where they will no longer support older machines though. Heck, I think it was the middle of 2009 when we finally decided to drop support of the Power PC chips for Final Cut Studio and went with only supporting the Intel chips.

Can't speak for iTunes with the iPhone OS, since Apple does not like it to be jailbroken.

My refrigerator stopped working. The only way to get it to run is to unplug it and plug it back in again, but once it hits the designated temperature it stops running.

I had a guy out, he recommended I buy a new one.

I have never purhcased a refrigerator before.

As far as major kitchen appliances go, it's the easiest to shop for. Have no fear. Just find one big enough in your price range and let them do all the work for you.

The fridge in my basement is bigger than the door, which I realized when trying to bring it upstairs to throw it out. Needless to say, it's staying put. I think the fridge was there when the previous owner finished the basement.

Yes, my main concerns are:

1. Getting the old fridge out and the new one in. I know the delivery guys will do it for me, but still, I don't want to have to take doors off hinges and the like. No idea how the current fridge got into the kitchen, since we inherited it.

2. The cold water line for an icemaker. My current fridge doesn't have an automatic ice maker. Not only do I want one, but it's hard to find a decent fridge today that doesn't have one. Our fridge is not that close to our sink. I don't know if the installation guys will do it or if I will need to get a plumber.

On my last fridge install the installation guys wouldn't even connect the icemaker line, presumably due to liability concerns if it leaked. So my guess here would be plumber.

This is correct. They don't want to be responsible for water damage and such. It isn't really that difficult to hook up yourself, at least our refrigerator was easy enough.

Actually, we have 2 fridges - 1 black, 1 white. Black one came with the house. We bought the other for the basement. White is cheaper.

We got one with an icemaker. Most places (Sears, Home Depot) sell a kit with all the necessities to make the connection.

2 options: run a line to the sink, or, drill through the floor to connect to a line in the basement (assuming your kitchen isn't in some odd location I guess).

Our sink is about 6 feet or so from where the fridge went. I wasn't real keen on the idea of drilling through the floor, not knowing what I might hit along the way.

Thanks for the info. Our sink is across the kitchen from our fridge, so I think it will be drilling a hole into the floor and connecting to a pipe in the basement.

On your fix-it meter scale, I am about 1.5 or 2, at best. My mind just doesn't work that way. So, I will be calling a plumber to handle the situation.

I'd say check ahead of time with the plumber that you'll get all the stuff (kit) if that's OK. If I remember correctly, it was maybe $15 at HD, but he'd probably charge you $50 for "parts" if he can.

Same here. My wife is inifinitely more handy than I am around the house. It's not even close. My skills only come into play when it's fixing computer issues, router/wireless, TV/DVDs, etc.

We once bought a wheel barrel. I took it out in the backyard to assemble it. There were instructions. It was pretty easy. I spent about 30 minutes staring at the instructions and not being able to get past step 3 or so. I had some part backwards or something. When my wife came out to check on me, the wheel barrel was barely assembled (and wrongly so) and I was rolling around in the grass playing with the dog. It was a Homer Simpson moment for me.

#2 is wayyyy easy, even having a 1 or 2/10 on the diy scale. I mean, they even sell the water line fitting with a pinhole maker on the end. You just clamp it onto a cold water line and twist.

Any decent store should have delivery and haul away.

I spent all weekend tearing out my shower and replacing the dry wall boarding around it, as well as retiling and such. Noticed it was starting to mold where the liner was coming up.

we had a plumber run the line for our fridge. pretty inexpensive if I remember.

we've had the fridge about 10 years now. never changed the filter. I've tried to, but Sears doesnt seem to have the correct one. Kept being sold the wrong one and just gave up trying. I'm still alive.

It has been a very expensive weekend for me. Two weeks, if you include that last weekend I had to buy two new tires for my car. But the good news is that tomorrow, I will have a new bed and in about 10 weeks I'll have an additional countertop/workbench in my kitchen.

Funny news is that even though I'm taking delivery of my bed tomorrow, I'm staying at my parents' house tomorrow night so I don't have to drive too far for a doctor appointment Tuesday morning.

Getting sick and tired of the people on facebook trying to 'connect the dots' with biblical prophecy with what happened in Japan. The one that took the cake was something along the lines: "9/11 New York, 2/11 Haiti and 3/11 Japan" and then something about how the prophecies are coming true. If you knew about them, then why didn't warn anyone?

Wow really? So you cherry pick certain events to mold whatever it is you are trying to convince yourself of? So screw Christchurch New Zealand (no pun intended) or any of the other disasters that did NOT happen on the 11th day of a given month? The mental gymnastics are out in Olympian style force lately.

Good link. Thanks I.J. and that quote is perfect actually. I think it is absolutely amazing how people try to fill in their lack of understanding something with a 'supernatural' cause, instead of doing some research and finding out for themselves. It's what I call the willfully ignorant.

By the way, I wiki-ed all the major (7 and above or loss of life) earthquakes of the 20th and 21st century, I think there was a total of 9 earthquakes that occurred on the 11th day of a given month. Surprisingly though, all earthquakes that occurred, happened during one of the 7 days of the week.

P.S. The Haiti earthquake actually happened on the 12th, not the 11th. So it appears that accuracy is not important to these people.

edit to add: My other suggestion would be to find one of these, I don't know what they're called exactly, places that tear down old houses & save basically everything. There's 2 or 3 of those that we've bought stuff for the old house. Kind of like auto salvage (aka junkyard) but for houses.

NorvTurnerOverdrive College Benchwarmer Join Date: Jan 2008	i avoid software updates like the plague. i am convinced they include minimal backwards compatibility meant to sabotage and frustrate and ultimately get you to upgrade hardware. inevitably, there comes a time when you need to use something that requires such and such version of your os, itunes whatever. so i take the plunge and hope for the best. now, my once like clockwork imac is all pinwheels and crashes. i'm sure this will continue until i reach critical mass and buy something new. when the aliens find the charred remains of our planet i want them to know, it was planned obsolescence.
