What's the RP record for K/9 in a season? IIRC, Wagner had some pretty big seasons but nothing like that.

Some quick B-R'ing shows Kimbrel with a 14.8 and 16.1 last year and this year. Wagner's best three were 14.9, 14.6, and 14.4.

Didn't Gagne have a huge season or two?

Gagne had a 14.9 and a 15.0.

Kenley Jansen had 16.1 in 53 innings last year.

Kimbrel has struck out 86 of the 174 batters he's faced.

He's also pitched exactly one inning in every appearance this year.

I think by the 20th viewing of that gif I finally looked at the catcher.

Was trying to figure out what the hell the hitter did that was so special.

Phillies now 8 back of the wild card. For perspective, the Phillies were 7 games behind the Mets in 2007 on September 12th.

Just sayin', there's a lot of baseball yet to be played and September collapses are not exactly unheard of.

LA started their September collapse a week and a half early this year. Pisses me off after a solidly successful year up to this point.

I just want everybody to know, by virtue of their loss to the Reds tonight, the Astros are officially eliminated from playoff contention. That's tough to pull off before September starts, but they did it. They did last about a week longer than they did last year, so there's that.

The SOSH board does an annual "elimination thread" that does a little recap of the season of each team as they're eliminated, I've always been amused by that, so I thought of this today when I saw the Astros elimination number was 1. It'll be a couple of weeks yet before the next team (probably the Twins, Cubs, or Indians) is eliminated.

Cardinals have scored 1 run (unearned) in the last 39 innings.

Can't pitch, can't hit, and have to face Zimmerman and Strasburg in the next two games. Yeah, things are looking great.

Bobby Valentine is trolling Red Sox fans at this point (well, the few who are still paying attention)
Quote:
On Saturday, he was asked about a Red Sox lineup that featured Scott Podsednik penciled into the third spot in the order for the first time in the veteran’s big league career.
"Just a mistake," Valentine said in response to his deployment of Podsednik. "Is that what it says on the lineup? What the (expletive)? Switch it up. Who knows? Maybe it will look good. I haven’t seen it."

I heard on the radio as I was arriving home and they were reading the lineup card that MIKE AVILES is DHing.

That's a fucking joke.

The Red Sox haven't lost 90 or more games since 1966, and they do have a shot this year. If my math is right, they have to go 11-16 the rest of the way just to get to 89 losses and that might be tough.

Hopefully the Reds can play well, but still finish second in the NL. I'd much rather they play the West winner than have to go on the road for the first two games against ATL or STL.

I was going to say something pessimistic about how the Braves won't be there due to another late season swoon (4-9 run coming into today). But then I just found out the Braves scored five in the bottom of the ninth to win 8-7 today with Chipper hitting a walk-off three run shot. So now I'm a bit giddy.

That Phillies team was 7 games over .500 at the time, this one is 6 games under. They had to make up those 7 games against the Mets to capture the division, so they needed only one team to collapse. There are currently 5 teams between them and the #2 wild card spot.

I agree that there's a lot of baseball still to play, but those are just two entirely different scenarios.

I can't believe they gave Prado a double on that error on 3B. He let the hop play him. He charges that, gloves it, and steps on 3rd, the game is over. That was a horseshit home team call.

Start Jose Iglesias and his .000 BA every day, start Lavarnway, start literally anyone young at this point, call up Bradley and Brentz for all I care (I won't say Bogaerts yet - don't start his arb clock yet.) There is zero point to running out Aviles, Loney, even guys like Cody Ross or Podsednik at this point. Then again, in the 5 days after his suspension (allegedly for slamming the manager's door), Alfredo Aceves pitched in 4 games and threw 143 pitches, so clearly Bobby V doesn't care about the long-term health of our players either. I really dislike Aceves, but still, that's absurd. Hispanic twitter sources have Robert V. being fired today, but we'll see.

Outside of 1992 (and the strike seasons), they haven't won fewer than 78 games since 1966. Pop quiz - who was the one top 10 pick in the last 45 years?

Exactly! Well - except I think they run out Ross because they want to keep him next year.

I remember I used to laugh when Carlos Gomez suggested he was a 25 HR guy.... While he's not to 25 this year, he's at 16 in 323 ABs this year. With his defense, putting up a .783 OPS makes him a pretty valuable player. Sure, a higher OBP would be nice but he is what he is.

Of course all the years spent flailing away at the major league level means he is a free agent after 2013.

AL Cy Young race continues to look wide open. Weaver has lost some ground on his ERA, and while that and his W/L record are still very good, he's lagging a bit on IP and not as dominant in terms of K's as the other contenders.

Right now you're looking at valid arguments for quite a few guys:
- Verlander
- Felix
- Price
- Weaver
- Sale

You could probably expand that to Sabathia & Peavy, though both would be behind the above five in most voters minds IMO.

Should be interesting to see how these guys finish up. Felix has been on a tear of late (including the perfecto), but hard to say that he's been better overall than Verlander.

Considering that the hosts of that show were (and I can only assume are, I don't listen to WEEI anymore) festering piles of shit, I can only assume that it was warranted, and I'd love for him to follow through on that. Hell - I might even give him his own statue if he did.
