DUDLEY, Mass. -- A teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student at Shepherd Hill Regional High School in Dudley was placed on administrative leave.

Amber Jennings, of Sturbridge, was released on personal recognizance following her arraignment last week and ordered to stay away from the boy. She pleaded not guilty to charges of inducing a minor under 18 to have unlawful sexual intercourse and disseminating obscene matter.

A statement from school superintendent Sean Gilrein said Jennings was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

When questioned by the Telegram & Gazette of Worcester, Gilrein refused to say whether Jennings would be paid while on leave.

Jennings, 30, has taught English at the high school since 1997.

Spurred by recent high-profile cases, Education Commissioner David P. Driscoll wants schools to be more vigilant about possible abuse by teachers of students. Some cases that drew attention this month:

Michelle Amundson, a teacher in the Chelmsford public schools, pleaded guilty to charges of rape and assault of a 12-year-old boy.

Amber Jennings, a teacher in the Dudley-Charlton Regional School District, pleaded not guilty to inducing a 16-year-old boy to have sex.

Jose Arana, a coach at Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, pleaded not guilty this month to rape charges involving a 15-year-old girl.

Reporting abuse

Parents who fear that their children have been victims of abuse can notify either school officials or the police, and both are required to report allegations to the Department of Social Services. The Department of Education suggests that parents turn first to officials they feel more confident approaching, whether a school principal or the police. However, parents should feel free to call both, officials said.

Teacher Accused of Sex Inching Closer to Trial

By Mike Price, Marion County Bureau Reporter Just like her arraignment last month, Debra Lafave was a no-show as her attorney asked for a continuance during a pre-trial hearing to defend her against allegations of having sex with a student.

A fourteen year old at Tampa's Greco Middle School says he and Lafave started engaging in sex acts at her Tampa-area apartment soon after school ended this summer. Then in June, he says they met twice for sex in Ocala -- both times with the boy's 15 year old cousin acting as a chauffeur. Her attorney says collecting evidence and talking to witnesses across the state will take time.

"We are just beginning the discovery process where we get police reports and other information from the state," says Lafave attorney John Fitzgibbons.

Lafave -- a 23-year-old newly-wed -- turned in a written plea of 'not guilty' last month to five felony charges related to the sex acts in Marion and Hillsborough Counties. And as the trial process drags out -- expect the national attention to continue.

"We're getting lots of calls," Fitzgibbons says. "We haven't really said much to anyone and obviously it's generating some interest. We're just getting the case ready as we normally do."

Lafave's next pre-trial hearing for her charges in Marion County will be October the 5th.

Saying that his marriage to wife Debra, 23, is "irretrievably broken," Kristian LaFave filed the below divorce petition today in Hillsborough County Court. He is also seeking a restraining order against his estranged wife in a bid to protect various assets and to keep her from opening his mail. Debra Lafave is facing a variety of felony charges for allegedly having sex with a male student from the middle school where she taught reading. Husband Talks about Teacher Sex Scandal

TAMPA, FL -- The husband of a Tampa teacher accused of having sex with a student files for divorce.

Owen Lafave filed for divorce Thursday morning.

His wife Debra, a middle school teacher, is charged with having sex numerous times with a 14-year-old student, including in a classroom, her apartment and once in a vehicle while his 15-year-old cousin drove.

Owen Lafave says Debra moved her stuff out of their apartment this week, leaving him without a bed to sleep on. When asked if he still loves his wife he said, "Sure I do. I do love her, but I'm hurt and devastated over the situation and the path our life has taken over the past two months."

But when asked if he thinks she is guilty, he refused to answer.

Even after all that's happened, Owen still protects his wife, by refusing to disclose what she told him. "In order for me to live with myself, this is something that I feel is necessary for me to do."

Lafave is a reading teacher at Greco Middle School in Temple Terrace, a few miles north of Tampa. She was charged with two counts of lewd and lascivious battery and one count of lewd and lascivious exhibition.

Authorities say Lafave, who has been married less than a year, had sex with the student in the back of her sport utility vehicle while the student's 15-year-old cousin drove them around the Ocala area.

Marion County detectives said the boy and his cousin provided matching statements incriminating the teacher and that the 14-year-old was able to identify tattoos and birthmarks on Lafave's body and the layout of her apartment.

The teen told investigators that he and Lafave got to know each other on their way back from a middle school graduating class trip to SeaWorld Orlando last month.

He said that she would invite him to her class during detention and ended up taking him to his basketball practices at a recreation center, to get his hair cut and to his house, the report said.

Lafave gave the boy her cell phone number on the last day of school, the boy told detectives. The sexual relationship allegedly began on June 3.

The boy told detectives that Lafave told him that her marriage was in trouble and that she was aroused by the fact that having sex with him was not allowed.

REMONT -- A teacher at Kennedy High School has been charged with having sex with one of her students and is set to appear in court Sept. 3 for a pre-trial hearing.

LaDonna Rangel, 35, an English and world history teacher at Kennedy since 1996, was charged with having unlawful sexual intercourse with a male student in May, court records show.

She was arrested July 20, charged three days later and has been out on $20,000 bail, court records show.

It was a case of consensual sex at the woman's house, police Sgt. John Liu said.

Police were not sure of the relationship between the 16-year-old boy and the woman, he said. "We don't know if there was any courtship," he said, adding that it appeared to be one incident and only with that student.

Police were tipped off in June after a Kennedy employee told police that a teacher had sex with a student, Liu said.

A police investigation led to Rangel's arrest and her departure from the school district.

District policy states that any employee accused of a crime is placed on leave pending further investigation or court proceedings, said Gary Leatherman, communications director for the school district.

If found guilty of a crime, an employee could be terminated, he said.

Leatherman would not comment on the details of Rangel's departure.

A judge is expected to decide in October if Rangel's case should go to trial.

In a statement released Monday, Superintendent John Rieckewald said student safety is a priority for the district.

"The safety and well-being of our students and staff is paramount to the

district. Trust between a teacher and students is essential to the learning environment and the mission of the district," he wrote.

"We are deeply concerned about the impact of this incident on the student victim and the trust the student has in school personnel. ... We want to reassure everyone that it is an isolated incident and an aberration."

Kennedy Principal Vivienne Paratore would not comment Monday, stating the case was a personnel matter. She referred all questions to the school district.

Calls to Rangel's attorney, Harry Singer, were not returned Monday.

Rangel's case comes shortly after the release of Mary Kay Letourneau, 42, a former teacher in Washington state who pleaded guilty to two counts of child rape in 1997.

In that case, Letourneau, then 34, had a relationship with a then-12-year-old boy and bore two of his children.

Letourneau received six months in jail after her plea, but violated a court order to stay away from the boy. She spent 71/2 years in prison before she was released Aug. 4. She is being allowed to visit the father, now an adult.

Speaking in the nearly empty living room of the town house he and Debra Lafave shared since February 2003, Owen Lafave described what it's like to be on the wrong side of an international spectacle.

Images from their wedding video ended up on the Internet. Her alleged affair is the subject of online message boards and tabloid newspaper stories. Strangers started sending letters to the couple. Their sex life became talk-show fodder.

Debra Lafave, 23, suspended from her job teaching reading at Greco Middle School, is charged with committing lewd or lascivious battery on a person under 16 in Hillsborough County and similar charges in Marion County.

Owen Lafave, 26, a commercial banker, said he learned about the allegations against his wife from his mother-in- law, who called him at work to tell of her daughter's arrest.

``I didn't know how to react,'' he said.

Privacy instantly ended, he said. The phone rang at all hours. He and Debra had to leave the house to stay in hotel rooms or with their parents to escape the publicity.

``My intention was to stand by her side,'' he said, ``to see this to the end.''

In the beginning, Owen Lafave said he tried to watch every newscast and read every story about his wife. Finally, he quit watching and reading.

He said the couple tried to make the marriage work.

But life wasn't as before. The town house filled with tension.

The day of their first wedding anniversary, July 19, Debra Lafave faced arraignment on charges she had sex with the teenager while he was visiting relatives in Ocala. She pleaded not guilty.

Wednesday, accompanied by a Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy, Debra Lafave moved furniture out of the town house.

Most of the furniture had been given to the couple by her parents. It had once belonged to her sister, who was killed by a drunk driver.

In the living room, only a pair of stools, an antique chair and three plants were left Wednesday night. Framed photos of the couple were stacked neatly, facing the wall.

Owen Lafave and his attorney, Laurie Ohall, said Debra Lafave removed the items after she declined to sign an agreement that Ohall prepared and said would divide the possessions equally.

Debra Lafave's defense attorney, John Fitzgibbons, said the agreement wasn't fair. He recommended she let the case go to divorce court.

There are complex legal issues to resolve, he said, such as Owen Lafave's retirement account and a three-bedroom house being built in Rivercrest the couple planned to move into in December.

Then there are things no judge can resolve.

``I have a lot of issues with trust,'' Owen Lafave said.

``The allegations are just so bizarre,'' he said. ``It's devastating. Here I thought I had the perfect life.''
