Ah, that worked. I added Rob Ordona to one of my circles, then went to his page and looked under "who has Rob Ordona in their circles" and my name does not appear.

Nope, Ben can make himself invisible in other people's circles. |

You are still functionally in their circle, just no one can tell you are. You are invisible.

Oh yeah, you can't prevent people from adding you to circles (similar to how you can't prevent someone from bookmarking your FB profile). But you can prevent your name from showing up in someone elses circle that added you. So if Ben's crazy person from the past adds him to a circle, nobody but crazy person can see Ben's been added to that circle.

Hmm, I can't seem to get that page to come up at the moment so I can't tell the context of how that question was asked. But you can, in fact, change your own privacy settings so that your name will not appear to others in someone elses circles in their profile. |

Ok, first thing I did in my own settings was remove the ability for anyone to see, on my page, who has me in circles.
I circled in red where that would normally show up. |

I wonder if I need 3 people to test this. I un circled a friend, looked in her profile, but I still show under her profile in her circles. Not sure if that's because it's myself or because you really CAN'T remove yourself from being displayed. Going to have to dick with this when I get back from lunch.

Yet another thread today that needs flere diagrams what with all the circle talk.

Yes, that's because we're in mutual circles. If you have the person in a circle, then you'll show up. |

Cuervo, let me PM you a random friend's profile and have you check and see if I show up.

I'm suspecting it's not working ... or that since her and I use to be mutual circle pals that I'm still there.
It would be ass if you can't remove yourself from being seen in another's circles. |

That's what I have been TRYING to say! I looked pretty heavily into privacy and couldn't find a way without the other person knowing about it. Like I said, it's of course possible that I just don't know the system very well, but everything said here seems to be confirming that...

What's weird is that I removed a friend from my circles (to test this).
I created an account for my wife. Searched my friend, and sure enough, I'm listed as being BOTH circling her and being circled by her ... even though I'm not currently circled with her. *edited for fail

Well, at least I know for sure that if you had someone in your circles and remove them, they still show on their profile (if you both were mutually circled, then you show up regardless of privacy settings). I suspect the ability to avoid showing up is not working properly/not available or I'm not using it properly or not testing it properly.
Either way it's not intuitive enough and needs some improvin. |

And reading through some of the posts regarding this on the g+ forums, there is a disconnect from not understanding the concern. People aren't understanding the difference between I don't want someone to circle me and I don't care if someone circles me, I just don't want it to be made public on THEIR page. |

From what I'm reading it appears to be a known bug so the feature isn't working correctly.

Man, this is being hotly debated on their forums. Lots of good reading. All it boils down to is people not wanting to be guilty-by-association by something that doesn't understand how circles/G+ work(s). Seems like someone that could be fixed.
Hypothetical: NAMBLA circles Ben. This doesn't show up on Ben's page. Ben goes about life normally. Someone goes on NAMBLAs page and see's they've circled Ben and incorrectly draws the conclusion Ben likes boys just because of that. Someone busts a cap up in Ben over it. In a more realistic situation, I can see how this could cause trouble in relationships between ex's vs current relationships.

Damn, you just made me feel old. You caused me to realize that my originally issued free passes have pretty much aged beyond the point that I'd want to use them. I don't think trying to trade them in would go over very well. Crap.

It's weird to say the least. Basically everything - "messages" (in the old PM sense), chat, whatever - are now "messages". You want to get in touch with someone you click on their name, type it up & then it shows up in their messages folder. They can respond in "real time" or whenever they're online or whatever. And your entire chat log (or what we'd normally call a chat log) goes into a single "message" that's stored under that persons name (although you can empty the history for that person).

Sort of. There is now the option to have a dynamic sidebar that has your most frequently interacted with friends in it (the number depends on how many can fit vertically without scrolling). Anytime there isn't room for the sidebar in the window, it goes back to the normal little pull up thing it's always been with the tile list of online users over on the left side. It's actually kind of handy. You can always manually hide the sidebar with the gear icon in the bottom right. |

So I was added to a circle by someone I don't know today, which is the first time that's happened to me. Have people found themselves actually being added by random people, or adding random people (other than celebrities)? Just wondering if people are using circles the way people on here had been saying they will.

I've added people who I see are posting things I'm interested in or seem to share a common interest. I've had people add me similarly, generally I can tell why and reciprocate. If I see we have people in common or I can tell what they are about from their profile(generally work/tech stuff) I'll add them, if they have an empty profile and/or have no one in common I'll ignore.
This way of connecting with people is exactly how I expected people to use Google+ differently. Last edited by jeff061 : 07-26-2011 at 01:31 PM. |

I haven't really seen many of people I interact with regularly actually using it. I've been added to circles of various family members as well as people from FOFC and some people from work.. but hardly anyone is actually posting in it right now. Everyone seems to still be using facebook. I assume still waiting for more people to start using it before they do. |

This. So far I've added/been added by I think 3 FOFC'er and 2 FB'ers. Of those, I've seen one actually use it (with anything I've seen) for anything & even that was mostly experimenting with some photos to test the privacy settings. Last traffic among those users that I see (when I checked today) was July 17.

Think it's pretty telling that this thread gets bumped with an update on what Facebook is doing. I think everybody in my circles average about 1 update a day, usually somebody checking in for the hell of it at lunch.
