Sorry for Charlie and also for MizzouRah. Had to put my sweet old rescue dog down a few weeks ago, hoped she would have 3-4 years with us but only made it 2 1/2. It's never easy.

Whenever I see this bumped, I hear the collective "Oh no!" resonating throughout the forum.

So sorry about Vincey, bryce.

It's a beautiful tribute to a beautiful life.

Thanks for sharing.

Ugh, my puppy just turned 1 last month. He's currently asleep at the foot of my couch with his head on my ankles. I'm getting weak.

I remember a line from a poem or short story about dogs, about how their lives are "short and bright". That stuck with me. It really sucks when a dog's life is as short as Vincey's, but still, it was obviously hugely bright as well.

Good article.. I was super close to our Golden.. he was like any other pet I've ever had and I still cry when I look at pictures of him.

My wife keeps talking about getting another puppy (we still have 2 dogs) but since Benny had epilepsy I'm not sure I could ever handle that again.

95% of the time they're sick first and it's all handled through a vet. It's not very often that dogs just die suddenly. When that happens, it's easiest to bury them. Or ask the vet if they or some other service in town picks up dead dogs for disposal. I think it's usually against city code to dispose of animals in the regular city trash, you'd have to just contact your city, and if they don't let you do it, they might tell you the name of a company that would handle it.

I had to say goodbye today to my best friend in the world. She came to me in August of 1992 and really helped me through the chaos that the next several years would bring along with any other time I was feeling down. While she was healthy she would purr any time I held her. When I was programming or playing computer games, she practically lived on the desk on between me and the keyboard. She lived through 4 years of failing kidneys and thyroid issues because she never gave me any trouble with the daily treatment that she needed. In October at her checkup the vet told me that her blood tests had shown pretty severe anemia. The tests for her thyroid and kidneys were in normal ranges so he was pretty sure that ultimately it was just her age of 21 catching up to her finally. I vowed that as long as she was still eating and seemed to be in good spirits I would do whatever she needed. She maintained some appetite and always accepted human food but last week she finally reached a point where almost any food she consumed came back up. When she fell from an already thin 6 pounds down to 4.8, I knew I couldn't watch her starve to death. RIP to my cat Kirat.

Sorry to hear Brian. That's quite a bond that the two of you shared. Twenty-one years is a really nice length for any relationship and it will be something that stays with you the rest of your life. RIP

We had sort of adopted a stray cat outside that recently had kittens with the intention to adopt out the kittens once they got weaned. Even though we hadn't really been able to play with them yet we were growing close to them all.

So this morning started off terrible. We lost one of the kittens. The little guy had made his way into my engine compartment and when I started backing out of our driveway we saw him fall out. The trauma he sustained was bad enough that he just laid there trying to move. I stopped the car and rushed over to him and just sat there consoling him telling him I was sorry as his life left him. RIP Jinx.

So sorry to hear about Jinx. That is so hard to deal with but unfortunately it isn't unusual for kittens to find that warm spot in the car. Don't be too hard on yourself you had no way of knowing he was there.

Thanks everyone. I felt terrible about it since I knew one of the other ones had been climbing around my car. We already have 3 indoor cats or we would probably adopt them all. But it still sucks to lose a kitten.

We had to put our dog down yesterday. I've never been an animal person and might never be. We had two dogs growing up, one accidentally killed by my dad and the other got away and never made it back. So Callie was the first pet I had to see through this end of life process. She had fought diabetes and blindness for 2.5 years now yet somehow just kept going. The last several days, the infections she had been able to fight off the last several years just couldn't be fought off. My wife bought her three months before she met me and I will always remember when I sat on Callie's seat on the couch when we were first dating. She was just so mad at me -- staring at me saying to get my ass up out of her spot. Without kids, and very likely never to have them, this is tearing my wife up and it's definitely hurting me more than I might have thought.

Sorry to hear. Give it a little time and consider getting another dog when you guys are ready. We lost our Dalmation and got a Lab a couple years later.
