Season Preview 2028-20

Team:#5 Hartford

AD: DavidCorperial

Head Coach: Stanley Branson (61 Rec, 80 Sct, 11 Off, 48 Def)

Recruiter: Nestor Blackstone (39 Rec)

Scout: Gary Liang (35 Sct)

Assistant: Bart Faris (25 Off, 63 Def)

Team Budget: $245,000

AD Expectations:Win the Conference Championship

Key Returning Players: PG Cody Braxton, SF Russell Herbst, SG Wallace Nelson

Key Incoming Players: C Cletus Son, PG Kevin Zorn

Prestige: 38 (+13)

Outlook: Hartford had a great run to the Elite 8 last season. They lose their best player in Henriquez, but return Braxton and Herbst, the latter of whom is an early contender for player of the year. The team has noticeably bulked up this year, to the point where some people are wondering if illegal substances were involved. Will the extra strength improve their defense enough to get them to the Final 4?

Team:Kennesaw State

AD: law90026

Head Coach: Arthur Massa (58 Rec, 63 Sct, 33 Off, 6 Def)

Recruiter: Alan Eckart (35 Rec)

Scout: Jefferson Potter (46 Sct)

Assistant: Jose Lavelle (34 Off, 49 Def)

Team Budget: $258,375

AD Expectations: Win the conference championship.

Key Returning Players:C Richard Curry, SG Hollis Casey, SF Woodrow Mulcahy

Key Incoming Players: PG Jerry Jones, SG Bo Akins, PF Brendan Borja

Prestige: 46 (+8)

Outlook: The Owls lost the most over the offseason. In addition to graduating seniors Greenwald and McCaslin, head coach Jefferson Mizell departed for Indiana. The best Kennesaw State could get is a former Wofford assistant, a huge step down from Mizell. All the assistants are also new, and none as good as their predecessors. The Owls only return two players who have been regular starters. They shoot more 3-pointers this year, and they will rely on that to avoid a down year.

Team:#25 Portland State

AD: Young Drachma

Head Coach: Hilton Starks (21 Rec, 40 Sct, 68 Off, 51 Def)

Recruiter: Barton Kerrigan (33 Rec)

Scout: Chris Burris (33 Sct)

Assistant: James Manchester (27 Off, 34 Def)

Team Budget: $220,031

AD Expectations: Play in the NCAA Tournament

Key Returning Players:C Jonathan Wilson, PG Charles Price, PG Terrence Todd, SF Jan Sessions, PF Gerald Rausch

Key Incoming Players: C David Vestal, C Theodore Saari

Prestige: 20 (+5)

Outlook: The Vikings had their best regular season ever, but it ended in disappointment as they were the only FOFC team not to make the NCAA tourney. The good news is they return all 5 starters from last year's team, including C Jonathan Wilson (one of the best big men in the nation) and PG Charles Price. The bad news is their younger guys aren't very good.

Team:#9 Charleston Southern

AD: Breeze

Head Coach: Richard Jurado (86 Rec, 60 Sct, 54 Off, 0 Def)

Recruiter: Gene Wegner (32 Rec)

Scout: Daniel Rodrigues (36 Sct)

Assistant: Doyle Cassell (31 Off, 34 Def)

Team Budget: $258,375

AD Expectations:Win the conference championship

Key Returning Players: C Jared Brown, C Jacques Evans, PG Bruce Henry, SF Charles Gilstrap

Key Incoming Players: C Chris Butler, SG Don Barnwell, PG Shane McDaniel

Prestige: 46 (+11)

Outlook: The Bucs made the Sweet 16, but saw two other FOFC teams go a round further. The good news is they had some good young talent. Unfortunately, they're yet another FOFC team whose coach was plucked by a bigger school. Incoming coach is terrible at defense, but also worse on offense than his predecessor. If the Bucs underperform, this is why.

Team:#2 Lamar

AD: Chas in Cinti

Head Coach: Andrew Roberts (50 Rec, 72 Sct, 68 Off, 10 Def)

Recruiter: Seth Barto (48 Rec)

Scout: Wayne Shepard (44 Sct)

Assistant: Aron Nimmons (30 Off, 41 Def)

Team Budget: $251,125

AD Expectations: Win the conference championship.

Key Returning Players: SG Phil Baum, C Odis Phelan, C Nickolas Winegar, PG Mauricio Alonso

Key Incoming Players: SG Andre Weaver, C Jeffrey Delisle

Prestige: 38 (+6)

Outlook: Lamar starts the season with their ranking yet at #2, including 10 1st place votes. The voters just won't give up on them. Lamar does return 4 starters from last season's tourney team, plus two really solid young guys in Weaver and Delisle. Will this finally be the year they live up to their potential?

Team:#11 Prairie View A&M

AD: rjolley

Head Coach: Norbert Starkey (18 Rec, 40 Sct, 4 Off, 58 Def)

Recruiter: Von Vanburen (35 Rec)

Scout: Andy Brien (37 Sct)

Assistant: Daniel Rios (40 Off, 44 Def)

Team Budget: 229,603

AD Expectations: Play in the NCAA Tournament

Key Returning Players: PF Herman Freitas, SG Rodrick Wray, PG Jeffrey Keith, PF Ronnie Bolden, SG Scott Marshall

Key Incoming Players: C Emmet Walther, SG Thomas Ostrander

Prestige: 26 (+13)

Outlook:
The Panthers finally got their dreams season, with a magical run to the Elite 8, and they'll be even better this year. Their expert ball handling should pay off immediate dividends and they return 4 starters from last year's team. The downside is yet another poaching of an FOFC coach, so the Panthers promoted their scout, who is not very good.

Russell Herbst is having the kind of season I expected him to have, averaging 20-5-5. The extra strength seems to have paid off on defense, as they are allowing 10 pts per game less than last season. They dropped a couple early season games, but rebounded nicely with three straight 30 pt victories to open conference play.

Kennesaw State at Charleston Southern

Another early season FOFC matchup, between two very different teams. The Owls put up 36 pts in the 1st half, which equals Charleston Southern's average pts allowed for a whole game last season. They led by as much as 9 pts with 16:13 remaining. However, the Bucs defense comes alive and limits the Owls to 4 pts over the next 12 minutes, while their offense (playing a surprisingly efficient game) scores 20 in the same period. Kennesaw State tries for a last minute comeback, but the Bucs make their free throws down the stretch.

Other than that tough loss to Charleston Southern, they have a couple bad losses, including one to in-state rivals Mercer and a 20 pt loss against Alcorn State. The loss of Greenwald and McCaslin is definitely felt. They will need to rebound in conference play.

Another FOFC matchup and actually the season opener for both teams. This one isn't quite as close. The Panthers defense holds the Vikings to .319 from the field and stud C Jonathan Wilson is limited to 6 pts.

The Vikings dropped three games to ranked teams, but look very good in all other games, with 7 double digit victories. The pollsters aren't impressed.

The Bucs have a couple really bad losses (to Ohio State and NC Central), but open conference play with three dominating victories. The question is if new coach Richard Jurado can get the job done against tough competition.

Despite an early season setback against New Orleans, the Panthers have been on a tear! They are the best team in the nation at avoiding turnovers and that has led to some dominating victories. Look at that last win against Mississippi Valley State!

The Hawks only lost 1 game over the last 2 months, on an random off night against a weak Binghamton squad. Other than that, they owned the America East just like they did last season. Unfortunately, they have a bad RPI due to the weak conference schedule, meaning they could miss the tourney despite being the #10 team in the country.

Despite some early season struggles, the Owls finish the regular season on a 16 game winning streak. The increased 3 point frequency has helped, as they've averaged 8.3 more 3pt attempts per game than they did last season. They are a likely lock to make the tourney due to a much better RPI.

The Vikings ended the season on a 12 game winning streak to easily take the conference title. Unfortunately, disaster struck in early February went C Jonathan Wilson went down with a patella injury and will miss the rest of the season. The best player in Vikes history was having a great season (11.5 ppg, 10.3 rpg, 3.5 bpg), but will be unable to lead them in the postseason, potentially dooming their tourney prospects.

The Bucs continue to dominate the Big South, with their only loss coming in OT against Prsbyterian. One of their wins was a 72-26 blowout over Campbell, in which Campbell only scored 7 second half points. In addition to their stellar defense, the Bucs are getting solid offense from SF Charles Gilstrap.

Well, that's a much better 2nd half of the season, even if it ended with a terrible loss to Sam Houston State that cost them the regular season conference title. 4 year starter C Odis Phelan is having his best season yet, with 12.9 ppg and 8.9 rpg.

I said I was shocked Handling was picked so late and this is why. The Panthers have just absolutely destroyed their competition this year, winning games by an average of 21 pts. They lead the nation in three categories - Blocks, fewest Turnovers, and fewest Fouls committed. They're also 2nd to Charleston Southern in Points allowed. Look out for them in the tournament!

At this point, the limited conference movement is moving too slow for my liking, but I still don't like how fast full conference movement goes. So I'm going to offer it as an option and just do it manually.

If you want your team to move up to a prestige 2 conference, let me know. I will find one regionally appropriate, and set that up for the beginning of next season.

1st Round: (1) Hartford 77, (8) UMBC 64

Braxton and Herbst combine for 42 points as the Hawks build a 16 point halftime lead and coast to victory. They struggled from range (5 of 21), but were sharp otherwise (.534 from the field) and forced 19 turnovers.

Semifinals: (1) Hartford 79, (4) New Hampshire 62

Once again, Hartford really struggles from range (4 for 19), a potentially troubling pattern. However, they get another great performance from Herbst (18-9-5) and take an early double digit lead, which they easily hold.

Conference Championship: (1) Hartford 76, (7) Stony Brook 43

Hartford is gifted a really bad opponent in the conference final and they don't have a letdown. In fact, they're up by so much that they're able to rest starters and let the end of the bench get playing time. 14 players see court action as Hartford easily takes the conference tourney.

1st Round: (1) Kennesaw State 79, (8) Lipscomb 63

It's not the best shooting night for the Owls, as they only hit 12 of 32 3-pointers, but Lipscomb fares much worse, going 4 of 19 from range. A 9-0 run early in the 2nd half makes a 9 point game a 16 point game, and Lipscomb's defense isnt able to get the stops they need for a comeback.

Semifinals: (1) Kennesaw State 78, (4) USC Upstate 65

On another off shooting night for the Owls (14 of 43 from range), they pull away by getting to the free throw line. The Owls shoot 30 free throws (making 24) to just 16 (making 8) for USC Upstate. Bradbury erupted for 27 points.

Conference championship: (1) Kennesaw State 78, (2) NJIT 67[/b]

NJIT tries to beat the Owls at their own game by chucking up 34 3 pt attempts compared to 38 for Kennesaw. The Owls win the 3 pt contest and the rebounding battle (47-32) to pull away late in the 2nd half.

Quarterfinals: (1) Portland State 73, (9) Northern Colorado 63

Gerald Rausch and Jan Sessions come up huge for the Vikings, both coming away with double doubles and making up for the absence of Jonathan Wilson. The Vikings outrebounded Northern Colorado 46-28.

Semifinals: (5) Weber State 67, (1) Portland State 63

Rausch has another double-double and the Vikings take 24 more shots than Weber State, but it isn't enough because of a hideous 3 for 29 performance from 3 pt range. After winning the conference tourney as a huge underdog, they've fallen twice as the favorite.

Semifinals: (2) Lamar 109, (3) Sam Houston State 101

Lamar's SG Andre Weaver hits a three at the buzzer to force OT. Once there, the superior athleticism is too much for Sam Houston to handle. The Cardinals shot .625 in this one.

Conference Championship: (2) Lamar 75, (1) Incarnate Word 67

Lamar has a hideous performance from the line (13 for 30) and almost allow Incarnate Word to get back in it, but C Odis Phelan's 19 pts and 12 rebounds leads them to the conference title. Lamar didn't even attempt a three all game, while Incarnate Word was 4 for 18.

Quarterfinals: (1) Prairie View A&M 62, (9) Alabama A&M 38

The Panthers ended this one quickly, taking a 19 pt lead at the half. The defense was dominant, holding Alabama A&M to .255 from the field, while the Panthers shot .510.

Semifinals: (1) Prairie View A&M 75, (5) Alabama State 42

This one was actually close at the half, as the Panthers only held a 6 pt lead. However, another stellar defensive performance holds Alabama State to .327 from the field. The Panthers balanced attack only saw one player hit double digit points.

Conference Championship: (1) Prairie View A&M 60, (2) Alcorn State 35

Prairie View proves they are ready to move up as they obliterate conference opponents by more than 20 pts in all three games of this tournament. PF Ronnie Bolden led the way here, with 24 pts and 11 rebounds.

Oh I just realized I skipped the Big South Tourney. The Bucs won it in typically dominating fashion...

(1) Charleston Southern 58, (8) UNC Asheville 36
(1) Charleston Southern 48, (5) Longwood 27
(1) Charleston Southern 50, (10) Coastal Carolina 33

Longwood only scored 10 pts in the 2nd half of the semis.

Well, this was my plan, assuming Young Drachma wants to move up as well.

MEAC - Prairie View A&M
Ohio Valley - Lamar
Patriot League - Hartford
Southern Conference - Charleston Southern
Summit League - Portland State
Sun Belt - Kennesaw State

Rationale:

1) These are the only prestige 2 conferences and I was trying to keep everyone separate so you didn't knock each other out of the conference tourneys.

2) I want Prairie View A&M to remain in an HBCU conference, and I didn't want to send a non-HBCU down to the SWAC.

3) The others I tried best to be regionally appropriate. Portland State can only be in Summit. Hartford can only be in Patriot.

(7) Kennesaw State vs. (10) Indiana

A very high scoring 1st half saw Indiana leading 51-48. Things definitely slowed down in the 2nd half. The Owls start to edge ahead due to their expert 3 pt shooting and rebounding. They lead 77-67 with 2:23 left. However, the Hoosiers don't give up. Indiana goes on an 11-4 run to make it 81-78 with :17 left. The Owls get a great defensive play to win the ball back, but Indiana's full court press immediately gets it back. They heave a 3 pointer at the buzzer, but it misses. KSU survives after almost giving the game away.

(12) Lamar vs. (5) Baylor

This one is close, for the first 11 minutes. Lamar held a 25-20 lead at this point. They finished the half on a 22-4 run and Baylor didn't know what hit them. They showed no life in the 2nd half and Lamar cruised to a blowout victory, finally earning their first NCAA tourney win.

(4) Prairie View A&M vs. (13) George Washington

Well, the Panthers must've been pissed about that low seeding, because they took it out on GW. Marshall and Keith combined for 37 points and the Panther defense forced 19 turnovers to lead a decisive blowout. This was the Panthers 11th consecutive win by 18 points or more.

(6) Charleston Southern vs. (11) UTEP

An even uglier game than usual for the Bucs. They only shot 12 of 35 from the field and got outrebounded 31-19. UTEP used this to stay close. It was 30-28 with 10:33 left. The Bucs defense then held UTEP to 3 points over the rest of the game to win comfortably. The turnover battle was huge in this one, as UTEP committed 23 turnovers to the Bucs 8.

(14) Hartford vs. (3) Virginia

I'm not sure who is screwed more - Hartford for getting ridiculously low seeds every year or the teams who had good season being forced to face Hartford in the 1st round. Poor Virginia has to deal with the best offense in the nation, and they can't. The Hawks shoot .609 from the field to build a big halftime lead. UVA couldn't get the stops they needed for a comeback. Hartford's Herbst and Nelson combined for 51 pts, 13 assists, and 13 rebounds.
