Allen, charged up by the insanely loud crowd and the early 7-0 lead, boots the ball beyond the end line for a touchback. Ohio State will start their drive on their own 20. Holmes runs the ball on 1st down and is dropped after 2 yards by OLB Steve Durham and Ethan Alexander. 2nd and 8. The FB Omar Hardy runs the ball up the middle and gains 7 yards. 3rd and 1 now, and another big play for the Wolfpack defense. Arnswaldt and Alexander are blitzing, but they’re fooled by a QB sneak by Horton that nets him a large 10 yard gain. 1st and 10 at the OSU 39. Horton tries a pass on first down, but OJ Brooks is there to defend, bringing up 2nd and 10. A trick reverse by OSU nets them 9 yards, and again it’s a 3rd and 1 for the Buckeyes. Holmes runs off left tackle and CB Ralph Spaulding drops him in the backfield for a 3 yard loss! OSU will have to punt! A nice 46 yard punt with no return means N.C. State has their back to the wall at their own 9. The Wolfpack need to string a couple first downs together here, to prevent OSU from receiving great field position… :54 left in the 1st.
Balldog gets cocky and calls for Spragan to pass from his own 9. He spots the TE Jack Mackie and connects for a 7 yard gain. 2nd and 3. Orland Macri carries the ball, but is stopped immediately for a one yard loss. That’s the end of the 1st quarter, N.C. State 7, Ohio State 0.

2nd quarter. 3rd and 4 at the N.C. State 15. Spragan attempts the pass to Mackie again but he’s hurried and forces a bad throw that drops harmlessly to the turf. Need a good punt here…39 yards, no return. Not bad…could be worse. OSU starts on their own 46, 14:46 left in the half.
On first down, we’re caught flat-footed by a surprise deep pattern. 47 yards later, Ohio State has it first and goal at our 7 yard line. Horton takes it himself on the next play and is stopped for no gain by Thurman Arnswaldt. 2nd and goal. Horton tries again on this play and gains 4 yards over the left guard – CJ Schmaltz and Ethan Alexander combine on the stop. 3rd and goal at the Wolfpack 3 – all 53,400 Wolfpack fans are standing and screaming. Horton calls for a pass and throws to Mercury Schneider. Unfortunately for the faithful, he’s open and the Buckeyes have tied it, 7-7. 13:08 left in the half.

The kickoff is 4 yards deep, and Trent Brodie returns it 29 yards to the N.C. State 25. I just noticed, there have been ZERO penalties called so far this game. Go figure. 1st and 10. Spragan throws in the flat to Macri and he bobs and weaves for 6 yards on his own. 2nd and 4 at the 31. Gino Linquist runs off left guard but is stopped after a yard. 3rd and 3. Spragan throws to the flat again, this time finding Gino Linquist. Linquist finds a hole and is finally dropped after a 13 yard gain! 1st and 10 at the 45. Spragan drops back again but he’s picked off for the first turnover on the game – argh! The interception is returned 33 yards down to the N.C. State 20. Ok, MikeVick – time to turn it up. 10:43 left in the half.

1st and 10 at the N.C. State 20. Horton takes it himself for a 7 yard gain on first down. 2nd and 3. Horton tries again, but Herman Sanderson and Ethan Alexander throw off their blocks and stop him after a yard. 3rd and 2 at the 12. Holmes gets the carry and gains 3 after a key block. 1st down Buckeyes at the 9. The QB Horton runs the option, elects to take it himself and is buried for a 4 yard loss by Herman Sanderson. 2nd and goal at the 13. Horton fades back on second down and throws to Hardy for a 12 yard gain. 3rd and goal at the 1 yard line. Big, big play here. Horton takes it himself via the QB sneak and gains the requisite yard – Ohio State touchdown. Ohio State 14, N.C. State 7, 7:32 left in the half.

A kickoff to the 1 is returned 26 yards by Ralph Spaulding to the 27. On first and 10 Orlando Macri follows Lentzner’s block for a 10 yard gain. 1st and 10 at the 37. Oh look – a penalty. Offensive holding on NC State – 1st and 21 – ugh. An underthrown pass by Spragan to Kenneth Wertz makes it 2nd and 21. Macri runs off the right guard, but no one on the Buckeyes is fooled – 2 yard loss. 3rd and 23. Spragan attempts a pass to Kenneth Wertz, but he drops it. Ugh. 4th and 23, send in the punting unit. 42 yard punt and a fair catch. 5:19 left in the half.
1st and 10 for OSU at their own 34. An option play is run by Horton who takes it himself. Herman Sanderson followed him the entire way and drops him for a 3 yard loss. 2nd and 13. Horton runs again (jebus) and is stopped at the line of scrimmage by SS OJ Brooks. 3rd and 13. Horton throws a pass to Cochran, but it’s underthrown – 4th and 13. 42 yard punt, 4 yard return. 3:53 left in the half. 1st and 10 at their own 31 for the Wolfpack. All 53,400 fans are standing, willing this team to make a move offensively. A trap by Orlando Macri nets 4 yards. 2nd and 6. Spragan connects with WR Donald Clark for an 8 yard reception and a first down. 1st and 10 from the 43 – 2:38 left. Spragan fades back again but can’t find anyone…he’s blindsided and sacked for a 6 yard loss (sack allowed by Lentzner). 2nd and 16. Surprisingly, Balldog calls Macri’s name on 2nd and 16 and the RB responds with a 13 yard run (KRB by Bednarsh). 3rd and 3 – 1:31 left. Spragan fades back and throws….intercepted by DE Randle at the OSU 49 and returned 7 yards. 1st and 10 OSU at the NC State 44. 1:21 left in the half. Mercury Schneider gets the call and is dropped for a 1 yard loss by Herman Sanderson. Schneider has only run the ball 4 times but has 39 yards (32 of it on his first carry). 2nd and 11. Horton throws, but it’s underthrown. 57 seconds left. Horton fades back on 3rd down and is dropped by the NT David Finley for a 6-yard sack! 4th and 17 at their own 49, and for some reason OSU calls time out. 33 yard punt, 2 yard return. 1st and 10 at the NCSU 20, 42 seconds in the half. Macri runs off left guard – no gain. Macri runs again….1 yard gain, and that’s the half. Ohio State 14, N.C. State 7. Total Offense Ohio State: 118 yards, 6 first downs NC State: 100 yards, 6 first downs

3rd quarter
N.C. State’s Allen kicks off to the OSU 5 yard line, returned by Meadows for 20 yards to their own 25. 1st and 10. Holmes carries the ball on first down and gains 3 yards after being dropped by Sanderson and Westbrook. 2nd and 7. Mercury Schneider runs forward and is stopped for no gain by Flynn and Sanderson. CJ Schmaltz drove through his block to dissolve the play. 3rd and 7. The Wolfpack crowd begins to awaken….surprisingly, Schneider runs the ball on 3rd down and is stopped cold after a single yard by NT David Finley. 4th and 6! 37 yard punt, 7 yard return, ball on the NC State 41 yard line. 12:33 left in the 3rd quarter. Spragan throws a screen to Orlando Macri but he’s taken down behind the line for a 2 yard loss. 2nd and 12 at the 39. Illegal motion on NC State, still no penalties against OSU (favoritism, favoritism! ). 2nd and 17. Gino Linquist runs the ball but is stopped for 0 yards. 3rd and 17. Spragan’s pass to Hickman is incomplete – Ohio State’s Crawford defends the pass. Time for us to punt…23 yard punt (ugh), no return. Ohio State will start on their 43, 11:08 left in the 3rd. Schneider runs the ball and moves the pack forward for a 5 yard run. 2nd and 5. Horton runs a counterplay and finds a big hole – 15 yard gain. 1st and 10 at our 37. Holmes carries off left guard and gains 5 – stopped by Sanderson and Schmaltz. 2nd and 5. Hardy carries the ball up the middle, finds a seam and is finally dropped after an 8 yard gain. Uh oh…our defense is looking tired. 1st and 10 at the NCSU 24. Horton takes it, but is dropped for a 1 yard loss by Ethan Alexander and Sherman Sanderson. Holmes gets the call and gains 3 – Sanderson gets yet another tackle. 3rd and 8 at our 22. Horton throws a screen and finds Floyd open…he moves through the crowd and is stopped after a 9 yard gain. First down at the 13 – ugh. A run around left end by Horton gains 5. 2nd and 5 at the 8. False start by OSU – hallelujah! 2nd and 10. Because of the penalty, Horton attempts a pass and is nailed by Finley and Schmaltz for a sack and a loss of 7 yards. 3rd and 17 at the 20. Horton fades back but can’t find anyone so he zigs and zags for a 6 yard gain on the scramble. 4th and 11 at our 14 – field goal time. Watson attempts the 31 yard field goal, but OJ Brooks breaks through the line and blocks it! Mercury Schneider collects the ball at his own 17 but is stopped there! Turn over on downs! BIG PLAY! 5:11 left in the 3rd.

On 1st down, Macri is nailed for a 2 yard loss, but Ohio State is called for piling on. 15 yard penalty and a first down. 1st and 10 at the 34. Spragan pass attempt to Macri is defended by the OSU linebacker – 2nd and 10. Macri runs around the right end for 4 yards, but that brings up a 3rd and 6. False start, N.C. State. 3rd and 11 – ugh. Horton runs off the left guard for a 3 yard loss by OJ Brooks. 3rd and 5. Horton runs off the right guard, gains a yard but the slippery ball is fumbled and recovered by David Finley! 1st and 10 for the Wolfpack at their own 36. Spragan passes to Forbes, but it’s dropped. 2nd and 10. Spragan to Kenneth Wertz – Giangrave of OSU defends the pass. 3rd and 10. Spragan again attempts a pass, looks away from double coverage and connects with Clark for 8 yards. 4th and 2, 9:16 left. Do we go for it from our own 44? Nope…38 yard punt, 5 yard return. 1st and 10 OSU at their own 23. 9:09 left. A long pass to Cochran is completed for 27 yards (2nd big pass of the day). 1st and 10 at midfield. The kickoff sails through the end zone for the touchback. 1st and 10 for NC State at the 20. Some of the faithful are making their way to the exits . Despite Ohio State’s nickel defense, Spragan connects with Clark for a 32 yard pass play. 1st and 10 at the OSU 48. Holding on NC State, 1st and 20. Pass to Kenneth Wertz is underthrown by Spragan. 2nd and 20. Spragan finds Mackie for a 17 yard gain – 3rd and 3. Spragan throws in Brodie’s general direction but it’s defended by OSU. 4th and 3. Balldog sends Allen out to attempt a 58 yard FG, and it’s GOOD. Wow. Ohio State 24, N.C. State 10. 3:02 left.
For some reason we don’t go for an onside kick and it’s returned to the Ohio State 13. 1st and 10. Horton is stopped by Sanderson for a 1 yard loss. NC State time out. Horton completes a pass by Hardy for 6 yards. 3rd and 5. Incomplete pass on 3rd down, bringing out the punt team. 27 yard punt and a fair catch. NC State ball on the OSU 45 – 2:12 left in the game. Spragan fades back and faces a man-to-man bump and run. He finds Clark open and connects for a 17 yard gain. 1st and 10 at the 28. Ohio State’s Lombard busts through the line to hurry Spragan into a poor throw. 2nd and 10. Bordano sacks Spragan for a 6 yard loss. 3rd and 16. Ugh, another sack. 4th and 22. A pass to Kenneth Wertz is defended by Ohio State’s Linton, and the ball is turned over on downs. 59 seconds left in the game. A 2 yard run by Horton (Sanderson on the stop). Horton takes a knee on the next play, and this one is over. Ohio State 24, N.C. State 10. Sigh.

Hey, I'm not too disappointed. It was a non-conference game against a superior opponent and we didn't get blown out. Good game guys! |

New files are uploaded. Check out Herman Sanderson's performance - 20 tackles, including 7 TFLs (a record).
I plan to run our next sim (at #13 Virginia Tech) on Thursday.

I agree, Vex. Our defense really shut down their offense. Looking back, I really wish I had changed the pass length percentages. Maybe, just maybe we would have been able to change the game somewhere if we had opened it up just a little. Right before sim time, I took a long at Spragan's interception rating to see if I would make an adjustment. After looking at it, I had very little faith in his ability so thought it best to just stay with the same ball control type passing attack. Even playing it conservative, he still threw 3 interceptions .
'grats to Quik for David Finley - he and Sanderson were both monsters out there today. VTech is another Wing-T type football team (it's basically the Stanley Northern show) and I feel confident that our defense can stop them. Will our offense be able to do anything? VTech shut down two very mediocre teams in W. Michigan and Duke. It's our first ACC game - so it's a very big game.

I really do enjoy holding a guy for 27 yards rushing on 32 carries...even though it was in defeat. If only we could have made just one play on offense or defense to give us a little momentum. That could have easily made this into a different game.
Herman Sanderson's my guy by the way.

Looks like gameballs went to Herman Sanderson and David Finley, according to the players of the week screen.
Luckily after this game against Va Tech, we get Wake and UNC. |

Yeah, I'm hoping that Wake and UNC are the cure for what ails us. Well, UNC anyway...you never know about Wake.

As of now, it seems that our top recruit along the DL is west-coaster Marty McWilliams. He rates an 87 "fit" and after two calls, we are atop the list of pursuing schools in terms of prestige. If we get a shot at a CA recruiting trip, it would be great to see him -- but I'm hoping our calls and invite might be enough.
It looks like we are also in the lead for DT Casey Batista. Air Force leads us in academics, but they have yet to make him an offer. We have a shot there. We are definitely in with the big guns for monster DE Chris Ansell - with several top teams after him now. Too bad... at some point, we probably need to decide collectively on a strategy with a "top target" like him. I don't think we can make a half-hearted play for top-tier recruits -- the only way we land someone like him is with a full court press. We probably need to decide as a group at the outset of next year's recruiting season if there are specific standout talents who look worthy of that kind of pursuit (no matter who we're up against). Knowing the cost (fewer resources for the marginal guys we are now re-setting our sights on) up front might make it easier to say "we want to get that WR from Asheville no matter what -- go in guns ablazin'." |

Possible new DL targets:
DT Terrell Morris (DC) - no offers yet, we might take the lead with this smart run stopper DE JJ Heath (NJ) - no offers yet, he's a nice run stopper DE CJ Gray (ME) - no offers yet - solid pass rusher, but idolizes BC DE Dixon Stonge (PA) - no offers yet, could switch to DT and help stop the run DT Gino Powell -- only visiting Central Fla - we might sneak in there? Assuming we have a little flexibility in pursuing additional players at this point, that list is in priority order. DT Morris is a guy we *must* pursue. Please. |

Newt Lentzner is going to give me heartburn. 3 KRB's but 2 SA's. But then again LT is the toughest position to play on the OL.

Just dropping in to say Nice Game. I'd guess there was some tension in the Buckeye locker room at halftime.

On the recruiting front, I'm concerned that G Mack Moorthy has decided to visit Virginia. They have a much better academic program than we do, but we're a lot closer to home. I've been pretty much banking on Moorthy and Shane Sanderson (no visit as of yet) coming to Raleigh. If they don't, we're up a creek...
Mckerney turned down the offer for offensive recruiting coordinator (due to free-time issues) so I've offered the position to the next person in line.

Check out Duke's recruiting in-state. That's an awful lot of Top 1000 recruits for a program like that. Looks like we may have to deal with them eventually. BTW - I agree that we need to strategize our recruiting next year. We should pick 1-2 really high prospects that we refuse to give up on, but then also concentrate in-state the first few weeks. After we've exhausted those options, maybe then look outside the area for the overlooked recruits who would add value to the team.

Defensive Recruiting Strategy - Week 5
Current Recruits DL Richard Feliciano DE - Phone (Look's like we fell out of the drivers seat w/OSU offering) Chris Ansell DE - None (No need to waste a call here.) Casey Batista DT - Phone (Hopefully we'll get a visit soon) Allen Castillo DT - None (Not looking good, with more local teams finding his home address.) Leonard Compton DT - Phone (He doesn't seem as interested in Indiana as I thought he would) Melvin Salcido DT - Offer (Let's try for Salcido.) Marty McWilliams DT - Phone (Hopefully we can grab him from Stanford.) LB J.B. Stephenson ILB - Visit (My money is on Maryland here.) Junior Loomis ILB - Phone (Let's stay after this guy) Sammie Richardson OLB - None (Virginia just knocked us out of the race here) Keith Banks OLB - None (This is a plan "C" guy.) DB Darren Miner CB - None (We have other needs this week) Edward Fleming CB - Visit (I think we lead here) Wade Copperfield CB - Phone (Still us and South Carolina Lawrence Rasmussen CB - Phone & Offer (I don't want to left out to dry if we lose out on Fleming or Copperfield) Jim Winters S - Phone (We're the definite leader here) New Recruits Cary Foreman ILB (VA) Visit, Req. Vis, and then Offer if BTS. Terrell Morris DT (DC) Visit, Req. Vis, and then Offer if BTS. J.J. Heath DE (NJ) Visit, Req. Vis, and then Offer if BTS. Courtney Bruce OLB (NJ) Visit, Req. Vis, and then Offer if BTS. David Palma OLB (MA) Visit, Req. Vis, and then Offer if BTS. Code Blue Text = Top priority this week. Green Text = Still an important player, but either the odds aren't good or we have a better shot elsewhere. Orange Text = It would be nice to phone this player, but if phones or visits are limited, this player can go a week w/o being contacted. Red Text = Not this week. Not listed = We're down for the count. Last edited by vex : 10-07-2004 at 08:42 AM. |

Just in case we sim the game on Thursday...here's the defensive gameplan.
Coach CraigSca and current LB coach (I lose track with all of our changes). I moved WOLB Thurman Arnswaldt to WILB due to the injury to Hollins. I thought he is a better candidate to move inside because of his run stopping ability. Lorenzo Roberts should get the nod at WOLB because of his decent pass rushing skill. If either of you have a different idea let me know. Their skill players don't scare me at all...but they have a great QB and a great O-Line and that combined with playing at home worries me a little. Good stuff, Mike. Arnswaldt is one of my favorite guys and I really believe in his ability, so I have no problem slotting him in on the inside.
Just need the offensive changes (if any) and new recruits from Vex and we should be good to go. BTW- we have a new offensive recruiting coordinator, larrymcg421. Welcome to the team! Edit: if we can get the offensive gameplan in, I hope to sim at lunchtime.

If you don't mind I'd just like to go back to the gameplan we used against Ohio. Lets get the ball to our WRs and let them make plays. Hopefully minimizing turnovers.

Same gameplan, but use the depth charts from the OSU game, I assume?

dola
BTW - I hope you don't mind, but I won't be able to be as detailed in the play-by-play in future games. That OSU game took 2 hours to write-up!

Recruiting is updated. Trip to Cali will be in 1-2 weeks. Also, I won't have access to TCY until Monday around 2:00PM because I'm driving to South Dakota today.

Fighting my computer lately (when it rains it pours - my registry took a shit, and it wound up restoring itself to a copy when I freakin' installed windows - hosed 90% of my software), and haven't had the will to screw with getting TCY working again, so no QB report, other than stick with Spragan. I expected he was gonna take a beating sooner or later. Let's see how he goes.

Game on - Weather is 65 degrees and fair. We win the toss and elect to receive.

VA Tech starts in a 3-4 defense. Macri gains five yards on first down and we pick up the first down when their offsides on play #2. 1st and 10 from midfield.

VA Tech leads, 7-0 at the end of 1. They scored on a 11 play, 47 yard drive. We had to punt from our own 9 due to an unnecessary roughness call against us. We were held to 21 yards total offense in the 1st, with only one first down. VA Tech ran for 48 and passed for 30.

Here's the M.O. for the game...stalled drives for us and a bad punt = good field position for VA Tech. VA Tech scores on a 42 yard TD pass to give them a 14-0 lead with 11:18 left in the first half.
To be honest, our defense is making a lot of good plays - Sanderson and Roberts in the secondary especially.

Another 3 and out and a lovely 21 yard punt by McCarthy sets VTech up at our 38 . 9:50 left in the half.

7 plays, 38 yards and a 6 yard TD pass later gives VTech a 21-0 lead. Sigh.

42 yard return by Spaulding on the ensuing kickoff gives us a first down at midfield. Let's get to it!
A 30 yard pass to Clark gives us the ball at their 25, but Spragan's 3rd down pass is intercepted in the end zone. End of drive. 4:33 left.

21-0 at halftime. Spragan is 6-22 passing going into halftime. We have 3 first downs and negative one yards rushing. Ugh.

Good Lord - 2 incompletions and a completion for no gain. When we're down against a good team our passing attack is awful because it's not set up with the running game.
