7.7 - Kinsey Report, Science, 1940-1959

The radically blunt Kinsey report on American sexual behavior was scandalous for frank discussions of items such as masturbation, homosexuality and the female orgasm. Add to that the news that Kinsey actually participated in sexual acts as part of his studies, and encouraged his research staff to do the same, and you have a lot of scandal for the 1940s!

8.1 Religion, 1700s - Pope Clement XIV dissolves the Jesuit order

The monarchies across Europe were looking to concentrate political power in their secular thrones. They convinced the Pope that the Jesuits were acting without regard to their religious orders, and the Pope subsequently banned the Society of Jesus by decree in 1773.

8.4 Sex, 1700's, Alexander Hamilton sex scandal

Hamilton–Reynolds sex scandal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Might as well go with one of the first sex scandals in the USA's history. As an added bonus, this takes the Hamilton-Burr duel off the table as well.

8.5 Visual Arts - The Astor Place Riots - 1800s

Quote:
The Astor Place Riot occurred on May 10, 1849 at the now-demolished Astor Opera House in Manhattan, New York City and left at least 25 dead and more than 120 injured.

a dispute between Edwin Forrest, one of the best-known American actors of that time, and William Charles Macready, a similarly notable English actor, which largely revolved around which of them was better than the other at acting the major roles of Shakespeare.

8.6 Military - 1920-1939 - Blomberg–Fritsch Affair

Blomberg–Fritsch Affair - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

the (fabricated) scandal that removed the german war minister (Blomberg) and commander-in-chief of the army (Fritsch) from their positions, both of whom were opposed to Hitler´s grand scale war plans (out of caution, if nothing else). This was essentially the moment when Hitler decided to drop all pretense and the remaining military elite stopped resisting his plans for total war.

9.3 Sex - 1940-1959 - Ingrid Bergman / Roberto Rossellini

Major outrage ensued when superstar Ingrid Bergman fell in love with italian director Roberto Rossellini, the slight problem being that she was already married and had a daughter. Things were not helped by her getting pregnant and divorcing her husband to marry Rossellini. Basically had to "flee" Hollywood for a few years after this (before coming back and winning an Academy Award on her first film back in the US in '56, according to some totally a "make-up call")

Milli Vanilli was literally the first music pick i thought about, especially with the connection to germany. But alas, i did not exactly pay much attention to matching categories/time frames until like after the 5th round. Also, is it just me or could the 80s be used for a draft by itself ? People did crazy shit in that decade

The Jesuit pick is great, that is a fascinating story.

Lots of stuff i knew nothing/little about in the last couple rounds

9.5 Visual Arts, 1920-1939, Death of Olive Thomas

Hollywood's first major scandal. Olive Thomas was a Ziegfiled dancer and silent film star. Her death was listed as an accidental overdose of mercury bichloride, but many people think she committed suicide, or was even murdered by her husband, movie star Jack Pickford (Mary Pickford's brother).

9.6, Writing, The writing of John Locke, 1600s

Wasn't sure if britrock was around, so I'll keep going:

Locke's writing on his thoughts on consent to be governed and rights of man were extremely progressive and scandalous for the times. His writings helped for the basis for a lot of our Forefathers ideas.

9.7 - Saeculum obscurum: Papal Corruption, Religion, Prior to 1600s

Here's a way to get on the list of all time greatest scandals: get your name on this list Wikipedia List of Sexually Active Popes. Here's how to jet to the top: have nearly every pope for a hundred years be on this list. Known as the Pornocracy or The Rule of Harlots, this series of popes from roughly 900 to 1000 were a series of scandals involving murder, sex, prostitution, and abuse of power.

9.8 Writing, 1600s - Credit for inventing calculus

Most people today think of Issac Newton as the father of Calculus. But there was a great scandal in the education world when Newton and Gottfried Leibniz both released their initial findings in 1676, and the debate raged on for nearly 75 years between the two, with accusations of plagiarism being levied against both sides.

And my final pick, the one that kicks off the stretch run of the draft:

10.1 Politics, 1800s - Boss Tweed/Tammany Hall scandal

Boss Tweed was what the mafia aspired to be. He had great political control of the city of New York, and also had his fingers in many different financial pies. He started to lose control when an immigrant riot in 1871 led to investigations, and the sheer amount of corruption was staggering. Due to his influence, it took several trials until he was found guilty. But the prison walls couldn't hold him, and he escaped and fled to Spain. He was eventually tracked down, returned to the US where he died in jail.
