Actually Gardenhire said today that Morneau's probably done for the year. And really, I'd have to wonder about his career at this point. This obviously screwed him up really badly. It's hard to believe something so serious came from a play that looked pretty innocuous.

Pretty cool news:

‘Best Game Ever’ Broadcast Found in Bing Crosby’s Wine Cellar - NYTimes.com

Quote:
How a near pristine black-and-white reel of the entire television broadcast of the deciding game of the 1960 World Series — long believed to be lost forever — came to rest in the dry and cool wine cellar of Bing Crosby’s home near San Francisco is not a mystery to those who knew him.

Crosby loved baseball, but as a part owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates he was too nervous to watch the Series against the Yankees, so he and his wife went to Paris, where they listened by radio.

“He said, ‘I can’t stay in the country,’ ” his widow, Kathryn Crosby, said. “ ‘I’ll jinx everybody.’ ”

He knew he would want to watch the game later — if his Pirates won — so he hired a company to record Game 7 by kinescope, an early relative of the DVR, filming off a television monitor. The five-reel set, found in December in Crosby’s home, is the only known complete copy of the game, in which Pirates second baseman Bill Mazeroski hit a game-ending home run to beat the Yankees, 10-9. It is considered one of the greatest games ever played.

Crosby, the singer and movie, radio and TV star, had more foresight than the television networks and stations, which erased or discarded nearly all of the Major League Baseball games they carried until the 1970s.

A canny preservationist of his own legacy, Crosby, who died in 1977, kept a half-century’s worth of records, tapes and films in the wine cellar turned vault in his Hillsborough, Calif., home.

and, the following quip from "Where Have You Gone Andy Van Slyke?:"

Quote:
Bing Crosby has now officially contributed more to the Pirates in 2010 than Bobby Crosby.

Of course, they are 28th in runs scored in that time (thank you Padres and Dodgers). Can you imagine what a league average offense would have resulted in?

Tulowitzki is on FIRE right now.

Not sure I liked Wilson going out there for another inning but I know why Bochy did it as the heart of the order was coming up.

Tough game to lose, especially with all those leads, but at Coors field you sort of had a feeling that was going to happen.

From what I've read, Gardenhire said he's done in the sense that "he just hasn't done enough baseball activities to be ready for the playoffs." But he also goes on to say "Honestly, though, our focus is making sure he's healthy for spring training. Anything we get beyond that is a triple bonus", so that makes me believe this concussion is more serious than we all probably thought. Not gonna lie, I haven't followed this all too closely so maybe my facts are mixed up, but from what I remember he was diagnosed with a concussion and there were no red flags raised, other than the concussion of course. Don't get me wrong, concussions are a no joke, this just seems out of the norm being that Gardenhire is worried about him being ready for spring training, possibly even beyond that. Curious to see how this is going to play out.

C'mon Cubs. Give the Reds a shot to clinch with a win, instead of them backing into it like I feel they probably will.

Next year, with a couple of bullpen additions, all these late game losses turn into wins and the Reds could get into the 90-100 win range easily. That is, if Rolen's legs don't fall off and Brandon Phillips doesn't go into full ego meltdown during the offseason.

If it were me, I would pitch Zito on short rest to get the top dogs set for final pad series.

And then stick zito and his guitar into the bull pen for the playoffs

Its a dilemma (if we make it). He's the 5th starter now - "PROVEN VETERAN" my ass. I get on most teams he's a solid 4 or 3 (4.08 ERA is still above average and he has provides lots of innings), but yesterday did seem like a Coors Field special. I do think that Bumgarner's inning count is an issue - if we can avoid working him more, I'd like to.

Ideal world - the Cubs go sweep SD.

I'm pulling for a Padres sweep. Gimme Giants/Phillies in the first round so San Francisco can smack the shit-covered sole of the NL's shoe in Philly's face.

Then the Giants can lose in the second round and the world will be right once more.

Phillies officially clinch a playoff spot with the Padres loss. As ESPN explained, there is no way for the Padres-Giants to match the Phillies 93 wins because they play each other head to head this week.

Wait wait - you hate a team more than the Giants? Are you allowed to?

PS - if there's a sweep in that final series, I fully expect the Braves to take the Wild Card - and I bet the division winner plays the Braves, not Phillies.

Of course I hate the Giants more than the Phillies.

On the other hand, I want to see both the Giants and the Phillies humiliated, and using the Giants as the tool of the Phillies' humiliation before they in turn get beaten by San Diego or Cincinnati just feels right, somehow.

If only Papelbon hadn't blown (another) save last night, we might actually have a chance heading into the last series. It will be interesting to see if playoff teams like the Rays catch on to what happened last night vs. Rivera/Posada - 4 SB's in the 9th, with both Ryan Kalish (No Ellsbury, but decently fast) and Bill Hall (not so much) stealing both 2nd and 3rd in consecutive AB's. According to Joe Morgan, that might be the most stolen bases ever in the 9th inning.
Spoiler

btw, does anyone else find it strange that Morgan works for the Reds front office and as a national broadcaster?

Also, Red Sox also with a pretty savvy little move, signing Felipe Lopez for the rest of the season. Not because he'll help us now, or probably be on the team next season, but he's basically guaranteed to be a Type B free agent, which means an additional 1st round supplemental pick as long as someone signs him this winter.

Dola - AL Cy Young voting could be interesting. It should be Felix Hernandez, but obviously CC was garnering support because he "won 20" and "pitched for a playoff team". Now Jon Lester could sneak in if he wins his 20th, keeps the ERA under 3.00 and passes Felix in K's.

One other thing I saw broken down - you know how people were talking about Ubaldo Jimenez turning a corner into a dominant Pedro-esque performance based off half a season when he went 13-1 with a 1.15 ERA? 6-6 with a 4.78 ERA since then. I'd still take him on my team, but the hyperbole was a little over the top.

The Braves beat the Marlins 2-1 in 11 innings while the Padres beat the Cubs 1-0 so we're back on top of the wild card standings. Even if we limp into the postseason it won't matter if some of the guys don't start hitting.

Yeah I don't think we have much of a chance in the postseason, but I still want them to get there for Bobby's final season.

There aren't many left to hit, the latest to go down is Prado, who Bobby said will miss more than one game with a hip pointer (at least).

At least he wasn't pitching in ATL. There were about 1/2 that many there.

Have tickets for Sunday's ATL-PHI game, Bobby's last (hopefully regular season) game. My daughter's first MLB game. We better not blow it that day, or at least blow it before then. At least we're also visiting the Zoo and the Aquarium this weekend.

I find it difficult to believe that a grown man would have an irrational hatred for a team that his team doesn't have any real history with, other than being beaten fairly soundly in 2 straight playoff years. I mean, it would be one thing if we're talking about a real rivalry or if something happened where your team got screwed or the other team did or said something to be jackasses, but those were just two normal, 5 game series that your team happened to lose, right? I don't get it.

Should I hate the Dodgers because they knocked the Phillies out of the WS in 1977 and 1978? If so, then FUCK RON CEY RIGHT IN THE DOUG RAU.

Oh cut the crap - how many people here hate the Yankees despite their team having no history with them? I really really dislike the Mets for example. We all have our irrational views in sports - suggesting that being a "grown man" or not has any role is more absurd.

Lester's voters may be cannibalized by Buchholz's votes, who is having an excellent year of his own (leading the league in ERA+ for one).

Seriously. If we were fully rational, we wouldn't get all that worked up about anything in sports.

My hatred of the Yankees is entirely rational and is based more on the city/state/people than the team and has nothing to do with any perceived "injustice" that the Yankees committed against a team I was rooting for. I'd hate the Mets, too, whether or not I root for the Phillies. And even with their history I don't really care much one way or the other about the mets. At least not since Gary Carter left.

You can get worked up about sports (it is live-action drama, after all) without getting irrational about it.

Hating a team because of the city & state they play in and the people of that city & state is RATIONAL? Seriously?

Frankly hatred of any team is irrational. But we embrace the irrationality of sporting fandom.
