7 play, 74 yard VTech drive, highlighted by a 39 yard run from scrimmage by Northern. VTech 28, N.C. State 0.

3 more incompletions on the ensuing drive. This is embarassing. Down by 28 with 8:13 left in the third. Virginia Tech starts on their own 45.

First Virginia Tech turnover. 12 yard gain by Northern is nullified when Arnswaldt tackles him, forcing a fumble. Roberts recovers and we have the ball at our 43. 7:59 left in the 3rd.

Spragan throws another interception late in the 3rd. He's 7 for 36 now. Holy moley.

TE Corey Adams has announced his decision to attend North Carolina State next fall. Unfortunately, T Carlton Grevan has decided to attend Wake Forest (as expected) and DE Chris Ansell is headed to Florida State.

Next week we're at home against Wake Forest (2-2). I'll play this on Monday as Vexroid is out of pocket for a bit.
On the recruiting front - NO new visits. Ugh! Mack Moorthy who visited us is now headed to East Carolina for a visit as well. Yuck.

I suck, if someone wants to take over the OC duties feel free to do so. Taking three classes and working 40+ hours a week has been kicking my ass lately.

I really don't think it's you, Balldog. I think our quarterback is just showing his true colors against very good competition.

I hope so - my copy of TCY has been left in suspended animation since that fateful day when the board went down.

I'd be willing to get back underway with this. We may have to reassemble some of our coaching staff however.

I'm going to ask for a rollcall from everyone to see who still wants to be involved. We obviously can do it with us 3, but I'd like to give a chance to all the other coaches to say they'd still like to participate (or not).

Near the end, it seems like it was just me, Vex, MikeVick and a dash of Quiksand. I'd still like the others to chime in, but I'd be willing move forward with just this core group if no one else is interested.

Ok, let's move forward by simming on Monday with us 4. If more people want to come back, that's fine as well.
Moving forward, do we want to stay within our defined roles, or move forward as a team?

I would be fine with sticking with my role as D Coordinator and leave the recruiting to someone else. At least for this year since I've barely looked at who we've gone after. I think we basically agreed on a defensive recruiting philosophy and have recruited accordingly so far.
But that being said...if you need me to assume additional roles...I'm down.

Excellent, Mike - thank you. If everyone just wants to stay in their existing role, I'll pick up the slack (though I'd appreciate the help). If we streamline ourselves enough, we could probably shoot for a sim every otehr day and pick up the pace

I'd prefer to stay as just the defensive recruiting coordinator, but I also have no problem with doing the offense as well...starting next season anyways. I don't have any scouting lists on the offense.

Seeing as I'm the offensive line coach, it might behoove me to assume the role of OC. I'm game for that if vex wants to take over the entire role of recruiting coordinator.
Vex, I'm more than happy to give you some input on what my needs would be, but I wouldn't have the time to both do OC and recruit for the offense. Let me know what you all think. |

I'm going to have to back out as well, school is seriously kicking my ass right now. I've had to burn up almost all my vacation days just so I could get my studying and homework done in the minimal time I do have. This sucks, because I really wanted to be a part of this...I will for sure read from work though

I'm still interested, but am not looking for a broader role than just managing one position.
If you needed me to switch to someplace besides DL, that would be fine... but I'm not looking to get involved in gameplanning and so forth. |

Raven, I was taking a look at the WF roster, and nothing about them impresses me. Their defensive line and inside linebacking corps are especially dismal, so I would suggest we try pounding the ball up the middle. They also only have one halfway decent cornerback in their secondary, so we may want to go long occasionally against them.
Overall, we have much more talent than them, so I think if we play it conservative and unleash Sanderson and Arnswaldt on them, we should be ok.

Wake Forest (2-2) at North Carolina State (1-2), -4
42 degrees, stormy We win the toss and elect to receive. Wertz returns the ball 38 yards to our own 36. They're running an 8-man front against us this afternoon. First play is an illegal shift penalty on us, pushing us back 5 yards. Spragan throws an incompletion, Macri loses 6 yards on a sweep, and a 10 yard completion to Clark gives us a 3 and out. 24 yard punt gives WF good field position at their own 41. Unfortunately, they seem to be able to pass on us early on, getting completions of 16, 17 and 22 yards. 1st and 25 at our 27, due to an unsportmanlike conduct call against Wake. We finally hold them at our 11, forcing a FG attempt. On the first attempt, we make a bonehead play and run into the kicker - fortunately it's not enough for the first down. They try again, and it's good - Wake 3, N.C. State 0. We've held them to -8 yard rushing (no sacks, either), but they've passed for 71. Ugh. We respond with an 11 play, 80 yard drive on our next series! Completed passes to Wertz (2) and Brodie, along with a few runs by Macri and Linquist is capped with a 19 yard pass from Spragan to Mackie for the TD. Extra point is good, N.C. State 7, WF 3 - 1:55 left in the 1st. End of the 1st: N.C. State 7, Wake Forest 3

We stop their drive at our 48. WF's Emmons produces a PERFECT coffin corner punt, rolling out of bounds at our own 1 yard line, where we will begin our next drive.
Fortunately, on the first play Macri goes off tackle and bursts for 10 yards (KRB by Bednarsh). After a 17 yard completion to Clark, Macri gets the call again and runs around the right end for 20 yards (6 carries, 25 yards for Macri thus far). 1st and 10 at our 45. The drive is ultimately stopped at the WF 26 yard line, bringing up a 43 yd FG attempt. Allen missed wide left . 7:33 left in the half. Our defense is beginning to pick up steam forcing a 3 and out after Schmaltz hurries Berkebile into a bad throw on 3rd and 3. Berkebile is 7 for 10 for 81 yards so far, and we've held them to 2 yards rushing (and thus 83 yds total offense). A horrible 23 yard punt gives us the ball at our own 44. 5:55 left. On a first and 10 play at the WF 40, Spragan fades back and his pass is blocked at the line of scrimmage. Unfortunately, the WF defender's blocked pass may have caught Spragan as well, and he goes down with a SERIOUS injury . 4:01 left in the half. Amaya comes in as our new quarterback. After a 4 yard gain by Orlando Macri, Amaya fades back for the first time. Throwing away from double coverage, he find Mackie in the flat - Mackie zigs and zags forward to gain 15 yards after the catch for the 14 yard gain! 1st and 10 at the WF 22. The drive stalls there, bringing up a 40 yard FG attempt. The kick is good! N.C. State 10, Wake Forest 3 - 1:58 left in the half. Halftime: N.C. State 10, Wake Forest 3 Stats: First Downs: Wake Forest 5, N.C. State 11 Rushing: Wake Forest 11, N.C. State 54 Passing: Wake Forest 81, N.C. State 136 I have a feeling we're going to be relying on Macri and the defense a lot in the 2nd half.

Wake Forest gets the ball in the 2nd half, and Allen kicks it through the end zone. Arnswaldt is the man, stopping the WF rushing attack on the first play for a loss of 4 yards, and then on 3rd and 9 making the tackle after a gain of 2, bringing up 4th and 11. Another bad punt gives us the ball at the WF 42.
On a 4th and long from the WF 29, we attempt a pass and Amaya gets nailed on the sack. Now he's injured, though this one doesn't look serious. This game is getting ugly . 10:37 left in the 3rd. WF moves the ball on us (a typical series consists of 2 rushes for little gain, and a big pass play on 3rd down). Uncustomarily, on 4th and 9, they RUN the ball from our 31 and Montgomery comes up with the big tackle and a 3 yard loss. Ball turned over on downs, 6:48 left in the 3rd. 3 and out for us, as Amaya is sacked again on 3rd down. 5:16 left in the 3rd. We force a 3 and out after Schmaltz picks up the first N.C. State sack of the day (and thus lowers WF's rushing total to 3 yards on the day). 3:31 left. After hand-offs to Macri nets us a first down, our OC goes nuts and has Amaya throw deep. Somehow, he finds Clark open for 33 yards, and Clark gets 13 more on his own for a 46 yard gain. 1st and 10 at the WF 17. One play later, Amaya finds Carter again for the 17 yard TD! 4 plays and 84 yards (go figure). N.C. State 17, Wake Forest 3 - 1:40 left in the 3rd. Another 3 and out for WF, ending the 3rd. End of 3 quarters: N.C. State 17, Wake Forest 3

We begin the 4th and the WF 44 after yet another poor punt. Let's see if we can milk the clock. To heck with that - Amaya completes one for 12 yards and then throws our first pick of the day. WF has the ball at their own 11.
No matter. An incomplete pass and then a sack by Beethoven brings up 3rd and 15 at the WF 6. A 14 yard completion on 3rd down is stopped just short by Monthomery, and WF will have to punt. Our ball at our own 47 - 13:02 left. 9 plays and 53 yards later, Amaya connects with Wertz on the 11 yard TD. N.C. State 24, Wake Forest 3, 8:56 left. A bomb is thrown by Berkebile on the next play and he throws directly into our 4-deep zone. Flynn comes up with the interception at our own 40. 8:45 left - I think it's time to call off the dogs. Or not...Amaya connects with Macri for a 12 yard gain. 1st and 10 at the WF 48. Now it's the Macri and Linquist show...and they can't be stopped. 2 consecutive first downs now, all via the run. 1st and 10 at the 27. The drive is stopped at the 12...and Allen connects on the 29 yard FG. 11 plays, 48 yards, 6:33 taken off the clock. N.C. State 27, Wake Forest 3 - 2:12 left to play. Ugh...this gets worse for Demon Deacon fans - 3 plays later Berkebile runs a draw and coughs up the football (knocked loose by Flynn). Beethoven recovers and returns it 5 yards to the WF 15 yard line - 1:43 left. That's the way the game ends - N.C. State 27, Wake Forest 3 We held them to 0 yards rushing and 130 yards total offense! We picked up 406 yards of offense and 25 first downs. Our defense was awesome after that first drive.

While I'm pumped about the D...for obvious reasons....it's not good to lose our starting QB on an already struggling offense.
But good win none the less.

Edit: Notice the Guard Switch for Matthews and Wayne. I'm trying to overload the left side with Run Blockers so that we can run all over their pathetic D-Line. Their secondary is decent and our QB situation is shaky. Last edited by Raven Hawk : 11-11-2004 at 01:05 AM. |
