Yeah, believe me when I say I'm not trying to be critical just for the sake of it but it comes off to me as a cheap way to get a big name in your band. And this coming from someone whose been thinking about adding Barry Gibb as his bassist.

Yup. Harvest is my absolute favorite Neil Young album.

I hate country music for the most part, but there's something about Harvest.

Purely for the pedantic record, his CSNY and Crazy Horse (and Buffalo Springfield) days came before his "first" three albums.

I think the 80's drummer will be hard to pull off. I think one of the best guys from that time was a regular with an artist until the 90's or 2000+, but would likely be labeled a studio guy in the end.

Copeland's syncopation and how he colored things was outstanding though.

With the categories I have left...there is only one song, there is only one...

It would be a thing of beauty indeed to see Plant, Peart, and Gilmore wailing and rocking out on...

6.8 Smells Like Teen Spirit, Cover Song, The 90s

One of the three best rock songs of the 90s (in my opinion). Excellent choice.

yeah I looked. But there just seemed to be a huge dropoff from this song and everything else. Only 2 others I mildly considered myself.

And can't you just hear Plant doing his "Whole Lotta Love" panting and Wailing Slowburn during the middle of "Spirit"

To me cover is the hardest category to fill. I want to go with one that my lead can sing, but can find a way to incorporate the entire band seamlessly.

Odds are, I won't be picking a widely known radio staple, but something that could be rearranged by my selected producer and turned into something that rivals the original version.

yup makes sense. Definitely should fit the genre and vibe of the band I think. Although I don't know if I'd pick something that no one's heard of, but sure we can picture our artists and producers giving songs their own sound. But that's not to say I would have had my group singing "Close to YOu" or "Wind Beneath My Wings" just to "see what my group would do with them".

My intent is for the song I choose to be completely re-imagined. I think lyrically it lends itself to that. At the same time, it's a pretty recognizable tune. Just trying to decide when to pick it.

Y'all are killing me, coming up with these questions right from the start of the day, when I happened to call in sick from work and had no easy access to the Internet just now, lol.

Sorry for the wait.

Okay, cover song. Eye of the behiolder, folks. It's whatever way you want to do it, and it's up to the voters to decide how they want to vote for that. That's really the idea in drafts like this. I can make suggestions, but that's all they really are. Just like the time thing, Rush as 70s or 80s. I can offer all the suggestions of my intent all I want, but in the end, it's what the voters decide that matters, at least from the perspective of trying to "win" the draft. Some of you have chosen to pick a band which will work well together and ignored more "popular" options, and that's fine too. There's strategy either way. Or at least personal satisfaction, putting yourself in a band manager role.

Sorry if that seems like I am "punting" on the cover song issue, but it really does come down to what YOU as drafters want to do. If you want to make that a cover song that is just a great song, rather than one your band would play well, great. I do believe voters will presume your band will play the cover song. I'm not sure there's any way to get around that. It's the natural assumption. But maybe if you explain it well in the voting thread, your intent, maybe that won't matter. As a class of voters, FOFC is pretty high brow.

As to the issue of "pop", again, eye of the beholder, folks. To me "pop" is mainstream, popular stuff. That will mean different things at different times, but I think you can generally see trends to it. The Beatles had a poppy sound and were definitely a "Top 40" band, especially the early stuff. But I don't think anyone would argue that by the White album, they were doing stuff that was not only clearly rock, but was some of the best rock ever put out there. Grateful Dead might have had more cultish followers than just about anyone, making them "popular", but would they be considered Pop? Not likely. Too many mainstream anti-drug sentiments exist in society for the Dead to become mainstream enough to be Top 40. Disco was clearly pop in the late 70s, Madonna/Michael Jackson in the 80s, TLC or Mariah Carey in the 90s, Britney Spears or John Mayer in the 2000s, all that stuff is Pop. It's a very, very loose category, and you can make of it what you will.

Speaking of R&B, a genre of music I love, I consider it a precursor to Hip Hop and that that is its natural category, but it very clearly has a big presence in Pop as well. You can also make an argument for Rock for some R&B songs (best example I can think of I can't say because he hasn't been picked yet).

Anyway, I hope some of this helps. Screw the rules. The only hard and fast rule is that you can't re-use the same musical act of someone you picked prior (excluding Labels & Manager/Producers), and that no one else can pick the same person/entity/song you did. Outside of those restrictions, your band is what you make of it, and your goal in putting it together (best actual band, highest quality, your own personal favorites, etc.) is completely up to you.

One other statement on cover songs: as has been noted, your only restriction is that it can't be a song one of your handpicked drafters has performed for recording or to be sold as a record, I mean.

cartman, I believe you're the only one who has picked a cover song, so if that changes your pick, go ahead and do so now. But do it soon, because when another cover song is picked, your choice is locked into place.

Ok, I am changing mine, as I did not realize the intent was a song for the band to play.

I'll stick with another cover song, but one that fits more into the spirit of what the category was supposed to be.

4.10 Walk This Way-Run DMC/Aerosmith, Cover Song, Hip Hop

One of the first hip hop/rock crossovers, this song can easily fit into multiple genres, reflecting the varied talents in the band.

To avoid any confusion, the current pick is Karlifornia at 5.9

Just to be clear, there is no intent. Your song choice is at your discretion and whatever fits with your strategy. My expression of how voters would view it was merely a guess on my part. How you want to do it is completely up to you.

Does everyone have a drummer already? I'm supremely disappointed with the drummer category. I'm also apparently insane, because no one else is talking about it.

Other than Drummers, I'm loving this draft

It became clearer after larrymcg's post where he explained how the category was added that the intent was for a song for the band to cover, not a 'cover song' per se. Plus when well over half of the pickers are ok with you re-selecting, that is another signal.

The 3 best drummers have been taken plus some honorable mentions. No one else would score as high.

Disappointed with the Drummers taken, or the lack of good Drummers?

Okay, just to be clear that this is what you make of it, and there was no intent to steer things a certain way except to have you all choose a song as part of your band.

As of Crimson's Nirvana pick, I have cartman, grover and suicane battling for the lead (suicane nailed the last two picks). karlifornia is close behind, with the rest much further down.

6.10 Quincy Jones, Manager/Producer, Pop

Worked with the King of Pop, producing 'Thriller'. He has been nominated for 79 Grammys, winning 27. He's been nominated for Oscars. His greatest successes were in the pop realm, but he also has experience in a wide range of other endeavors, which helps in an eclectic mix of band members.

7.1 Kim Gordon - Sonic Youth, Bass Guitarist, Female

Although the name of the band is 'Sonic Youth', they have been around for over 30 years. They have not had a lot of mainstream success, but a ton of critical praise. They were pioneers in the underground/alternative scene. Kim Gordon has been there all along, contributing rock solid base to keep the intentionally out of tune guitars in line. She is definitely in the discussion for top female bassist in rock history.
