Saw this commercial a few days ago and had a WTF moment. Have we really gotten to the point where we need a hint of lesbianism to sell GUM? What is the message here...if you're curious about our gum, it's as exhilirating as trying a same-sex kiss?!

Honestly though a dog could howl out Nessun Dorma and it would bring down the house. It's one of the most magnificent pieces of music in history. Not the slightest exaggeration, either. My favorite is the way people are popping up all over the internet saying "I've never been a fan of opera, but wow." Yeah, well, give it a chance next time. Music is a very powerful thing.

The stigma attached to opera and classical music is one of the things that irritates me the most. It takes someone sticking into the middle of a show like this to get people to focus their attention on it. And when they actually do, this is the result. (Hint: the performer was not even that great.)

Apparently you've never seen America's Got Talent. The bar is, um, set quite low. This guy is a standout on that show (I'm assuming the British version is roughly the same talent-wise).

Oh of course Ive seen the show. I mean in comparison to the pros that tackle Nessun Dorma. He has the raw ability to go a long ways, no doubt, but he isn't in that league by any stretch. These people could easily hear people that crush that performance like a beer can, but they never have. That's what I mean.

But I think part (or most) of the response to that performance was the guy's background and the juxtaposition between him and the piece he was singing. I don't think most people want to hear that music, but in that small dose and under those circumstances, people were moved by it.

No way it was just the circumstances. No way. I don't deny it contributed, I suppose, but that piece has been killing since long before any of us were born.

Anyway, good enough for me. Fun to watch that guy.

They've got two - the original and the guy who's on the American version. I wonder how that show is overall...I wonder if Piers and Simon are constantly trying to outdo each other with mean-spirited, over-exaggerated insults to the contestants?

I'll admit I never listen to opera (like some classical though).

But my reaction was related to KSyrup's observation. When i clicked the link and saw the guy, he looked sad (his face), and I thought I was going to see a horrible butchering. Once he started singing, and the crowd got into it... the middle woman judge started breathing all heavy... it was crazy. Such a nice surprise, and I feel good for the guy.

There is no way the crowd would have reacted like they did if a world-class opera singer came out on stage in front of the same crowd of people and sang what that guy sang. They might have recognized that he was good, but the emotion of the moment would not have existed and the reaction wouldn't have been so immediate and positive. Why? Because the opera singer is expected to sing like that. If anyone had an expectation with this guy, it was that he would embarrass himself.

The semifinal performance of Paul Potts. I felt this performance was technically better than the first, and the crowd (knowing what to expect this time!) loved it again. This guy does have sort of an unexplainable appeal (in addition to being quite talented).

Con te partiro is another solid choice that is sure to wow most crowds. I would love to see this guy win that show (and based on audience and judge reactions, he probably will easily). I wish we could get something like this on America's Got Talent. That show is like a parade of freaks most times I watch it.

I've decided I have to stop watching America's Got Talent. It's so impossibly bad, I can't justify it anymore. Most of the people are ridiculous, and then the few that are left either have gimmicky "talent" or are mediocre-to-good and celebrated as the second coming. It's just laughably bad. At least The Next Best Thing (the impersonator show) has 3 funny judges who make up for the bad acts with their one-liners.

I was just showing those videos to my wife and she made the comment that what we have to watch in this country is quite pathetic compared to that. I will still watch with the hope of finding something decent, I guess.

I couldnt stand that next best thing show. hehe

Maybe when I'm 150, i'll be less impressed by most things.

Yeah...him saying that to a student..even if the student did say it first (which is impossible to know for sure), that is no reason to act so irresponsibly.

Eh. I guess we are so conditioned by now to expect that the amazing bird would have either 1) transformed into the likeness of Paris Hillton, 2) jumped on someone's head and pooped all over the place or 3) have Mentos fizz blowing out of its orifices.

I don't know if a bird recreating the sounds of chainsaws cutting down trees is amazing, but I thought it was when I watched it. I want to get one of those and just lock it in a room with a huge music playlist playing on repeat. Then after a few months or whatever, I'll theoretically carry that bird around with me like an mp3 player.
