I'll preface this by saying that maybe I'm wrong and Shaw is very good, but it really does seem like the John Calipari/Bruiser Flint situation at UMass. Amazing coach comes, bring them from nothing to the precipice of the national title, then leaves and has a very competent but uninspiring assistant take over. He has unprecedented success compared to every other coach, but not quite as good as Harbaugh/Calipari, so the local fans dislike him, and as far as U Texas goes, I don't think he ever would be that good there as a builder either.

Or hasn't really been lighting it up that much on the college level as of late. Maybe going to the NFL helps him to focus better but right now he's not a guy I would think too many pro teams would care about.

Yeah, if this was 10 years ago maybe people care. At this point, I think a lot of Sooner fans would be fine with him leaving.

Stoops is probably plan B or plan C for teams now. He's just not the hot commodity he was a few years ago.
I'll be surprised if Briles and Sumlin aren't coaching in the NFL within 2 years. We're probably going to see the NFL go a bit spread crazy after what Chip Kelly's offense did with the Eagles this season. |

There are some rumors of Brian Kelly interest in Detroit. Wonder where ND would go if that happened.

So much for the Irish being his dream job. At least he doesn't have to worry about his QB cheating in classes. I also did read about him being a possibility in a number of articles, but I never took it seriously. I respect him a ton, but he's too much of a wildcard as a NFL coach for me.

Wilcox is official at USC now as DC. Also, they brought in Tuiasosopo to coach TE, and SF coach Tim Drevno to coach the offensive line. |

Kinda surprised that Tui came down to USC, but I guess when your position is filled by someone else at UW, you dont have many places to go.

I think the credibility of the coach is going to be an important factor in reining in the Lions discipline issues. Lovie Smith has been successful as a head coach and has worked with other successful head coaches.

So apparently Fisher is re-upping with FSU to stay in Tallahassee.
Does that leave Texas down to Briles, Franklin, or Strong? And I find it hard to believe Briles leaves for Austin after re-upping with Baylor, although the NFL may come calling. |

Word is that Fisher's contract has a zero buyout and this was mostly done for recruiting purposes. If true, he may still end up at Texas.

I cant see Briles going pro. I think he likes developing QBs. And I just feel like college is where he wants to do that. Remember he is a good ol' Texas boy.
I see him as the next Texas coach.

The Briles issue with Texas is that he has spent the last several years bashing Texas in negative recruiting. From what I have read, the Texas boosters aren't really happy about that.

If Fisher is really thinking about leaving FSU, I wonder if something smells funny with the Winston case that we don't know about yet. He's put together some recruiting classes that will have them challenging for the NC the next 2-3 years, I think he'd be insane to leave at this point all being equal.

I have no problem believing ND is his dream college job, but outside of the rare institutional coaches (Osborne, Paterno, Bowden) every one of these guys is so competitive you know they all want to prove they can succeed in the NFL at some point. Even the ones who quickly realize it was a mistake and they go back to college (Saban, Spurrier).

Not really. He was offered strictly a TE coaching job by Petersen; Sark gave him the TE coach slot, plus the "Associate Head Coach" title to help justify a much higher salary, and word is he'll be a lot more involved in gameplanning than he would as just a typical TE coach.

Dec. 30, 2013
--WILCOX, TUIASOSOPO, DREVNO NAMED USC FOOTBALL ASSISTANT COACHES LOS ANGELES*- Justin Wilcox and Marques Tuiasosopo, who were on new USC head football coach Steve Sarkisian's staff at Washington, and current San Francisco 49ers assistant Tim Drevno have been hired as USC assistant coaches, Sarkisian announced today (Dec. 30). Wilcox will be Troy's defensive coordinator, Tuiasosopo will be the tight ends coach and Drevno will handle the offensive line and be the running game coordinator. Sarkisian also announced that Ivan Lewis, who once worked in USC's weight room, has been hired as USC's strength and conditioning coach after serving in that role at Washington. Sarkisian previously announced the hirings of former Washington assistants Johnny Nansen, Peter Sirmon and Keith Heyward, and the retention of current USC assistants Clay Helton and Tee Martin. Sarkisian said that Nansen will coach running backs and be the special teams coordinator, Sirmon will be the linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator and Heyward will coach the defensive backs, while Helton*-who served as USC's interim head coach in its Las Vegas Bowl victory earlier this month*-will continue in his role as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and Martin will remain the wide receivers coach. Wilcox, who has been a defensive coordinator at 3 schools during the past 8 years, helped the Husky defense move from the bottom 20 in the nation statistically to the top 40 the year he took over. UW's 41 pass sacks in 2013 are second most nationally and its pass efficiency defense ranks first in the Pac-12. Tuiasosopo, who led Washington to a bowl win over BYU last week as its interim head coach after Sarkisian left for USC, was the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year and Rose Bowl MVP during his 2000 senior season at UW and then played quarterback in the NFL. Drevno, a longtime collegiate assistant before joining the 49ers in 2011, has been Jim Harbaugh's offensive line coach for 9 years at 3 stops. "These new additions to our staff bring not only tremendous coaching expertise, but they are outstanding recruiters and good, solid people," said Sarkisian. "They are great additions to the USC football program and the Trojan Family." Sarkisian said he will name a new defensive line coach in the near future. Season tickets for USC's 2014 football season, which includes home games against Notre Dame, Fresno State, Arizona State, Oregon State, California and Colorado, are available for new season ticket holders online by visiting GetTrojanTix.com or by calling 1-855-WePlay4. Full Bios on New Coaches Wilcox Wilcox, who has been a defensive coordinator at 3 schools during the past 8 years, served in that role at Washington the past 2 seasons (2012-13). In 2012, the Huskies were in the national Top 40 in total defense, scoring defense and pass defense after finishing the previous year ranked lower than 105th in each category. UW's scoring defense was in the national Top 35 in 2013, while its pass efficiency defense improved 60 spots to 27th nationally in 2012 and then was 11th in 2013 (first in the Pac-12). Its 41 pass sacks in 2013 are second most nationally. The Huskies played in the 2012 Las Vegas Bowl and 2013 Fight Hunger Bowl. He returned to Boise State as defensive coordinator for 4 seasons (2006-09), helping the Broncos to a 49-4 record while leading the Western Athletic Conference in defense each year. In 2006, BSU was eighth nationally in rushing defense (89.1) as the team went 13-0. In 2008, BSU was third nationally in scoring defense (12.6) as 8 of its 13 opponents scored just 10 points or less. In 2009, BSU was 14th nationally in total defense (300.2) and scoring defense (17.1) and third in turnover margin (+1.5). He set UW's career total offense record as he passed for 5,879 yards and 33 touchdowns while rushing for 1,495 yards with 21 TDs. In a victory over Stanford in 1999, he became the first NCAA Division I player to pass for 300 yards and rush for 200 yards in a game (he threw for 302 and ran for 207). In the 1997 Oregon game, he became the first true freshman to start at quarterback for Washington. He was the Huskies' team captain in 1999 and 2000. Washington also played in the 1997 Aloha Bowl, 1998 Oahu Bowl and 1999 Holiday Bowl. Tuiasosopo earned his bachelor's degree in business from Washington in 2001. A second round NFL draft pick by the Oakland Raiders in 2001, he played quarterback for the Raiders for 7 seasons (2001-06, 2008) and the New York Jets in 2007. There is no part of me that thinks Strong will be at Louisville in 3 years.. However its amusing to me that he didn't just leave immediately for Texas job..
Its also amusing to me that Texas thinks it can take any teams coach tomorrow. I'm sure Bobby Petrino's just a phone call away though Texas! |

The interesting wrinkle here is that Don Brown might leave his position as DC at Boston College to come back to UMass as Whipple's DC. Not only can BC pay him more, but it would also be a demotion of sorts since he was the head coach here. The catch is that he only needs 3 more years of being a state employee to qualify for a state pension... which would be more valuable in the long run. |

My sources are telling me that Texas is no longer interested in Saban, since he can't beat Oklahoma.

Low expectations and low risk makes this a good fit for all. Whipple is running out of chances to get that 1-A head coaching job. This opportunity more or less fell into his lap when he had not much going on. He has shown on multiple occasions that he could rebuild a program from the depths, and the bar for improvement seems low in this case. Admin might have the leverage, as Whipple is currently out of coaching. But Whipple has overplayed his hand before (allegedly) in relation to the UConn and BC jobs, so we'll see... |

Curious if you know any more info on the Whipple to UConn/BC gigs falling through. I've heard the same thing - that he pushed for higher assistant salaries than either wanted to pay, but I've always thought there had to be something more. Either he came off too arrogantly to the Presidents, or pushed for a lowering of academic standards for players or something. |

Yup. I posted in the college football week thread about this (in error). As I said yesterday, no way Mora goes to Texas. And as I said in the other thread, it will be fun to see all the pundits backtrack or make up excuses for why Mora didn't end up at Texas. Also, saw that Briles is also saying he is staying at Baylor.
