Your top 10 steam games by hours played

I'm sure many of us have been using our social distancing and stay at home orders to dig into some video games.

I'm interested to see everyone's top 10 Steam games sorted by hours played. Just the game names will suffice, but if you want to put the hours played, that's fine too.

(I'm interested to see games I've never heard of or played)

Here are mine:

1. OOTP 19
2. OOTP 20
3. FOF 8
4. Endless Legend
5. OOTP 21 (I've been playing since the beta and leave it open at times)
6. XCOM: Enemy Unknown
7. Galactic Civilizations 3
8. Civilization 6
9. Sorcerer King
10. Endless Space 2

1.) Team Fortress 2
2.) Path of Exile
3.) OOTP 19
4.) FM 2010
5.) OOTP 18
6.) Pathfinder: Kingmaker
7.) Fallout: New Vegas
8.) Dota: Underlords
9.) Divinity: Original Sin 2
10.) Divinity: Original Sin

After this the next 10 or so are almost all RPGs (Kingdom Come, Pillars of Eternity, Fallout 4, ect). Witcher 3 would probably sit around 2nd or 3rd, but I didn't buy it on Steam.

I used to play sports games a lot more and strategy games a lot less than I do now; this list will look a lot different in the future in terms of genre I expect.

Most of the time, I leave the games running while I'm doing something else. My Top 5 non-sports games are Mini Metro, Torchlight, Prison Architect, Civ V, and Roller Coaster Tycoon 3.

Wow... very interesting and diverse lists so far.

I really think it's neat to see the same game, but different versions listed.

...but I desperately want to find a new game to enjoy. My bro says the newest total war: 3 kingdoms but that's never been my bag. I'm intrigued and own Crusader Kings 2 but it's just so daunting I've never been able to connect to it. I have Rimworld and again it just feels vacant. Ugh, I even tried Prison Archtiect today and it just is meh for me. Maybe everything is just meh because of the sorry state of the world currently. I don't know.

Ori and the Blind Forest: DE - 363
Rocket League - 327
Stardew Valley - 177
Slay The Spire - 157
Elder Scrolls: Skyrim - 112
Rocksmith 2014 - 103
Dark Souls 3 - 98
Ori and the Will Of The Wisps - 87
Fallout 4 - 86

I did have my ~30 season dynasty in FM10, but most of those hours were b/c you could leave the game up 24/7 for weeks without any problems. I assume it is actually my most played but certainly less than 1000 hours of actual playtime.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps came out 3 weeks ago and its already #9. It will almost certainly get to #2, I'm extremely interested in working on my speedrun route and sinking a lot of time into countless playthroughs (which is how Blind Forest got to 363 hours).

A ton of my gaming time is off steam, for my two main league of legends accounts the tracker site says I have ~1300 hours. I believe that's low.

I've said it many times before, but add up the time I've spent on Championship Manager/Football Manager since primary school, and I probably could be anything I want to be. Kind of a sobering thought.

My Top 10:

1. Slay The Spire
2. XCOM 2
3. Civilization 5
4. XCOM: Enemy Unknown
5. Rimworld
6. 7 Days To Die
7. Civilization 6
8. Borderlands 2
9. Divinity: Original Sin 2
10. Football Manager 2010

I play games with three buddies about once a week. We love co-op games, so that's where Borderlands 2, 7 Days, Divinity, as well as some Civ comes in. As for single player games, Slay The Spire is pretty much the only game I've played in the last year or so with any regularity.

I do love me some XCOM. Always have since the original.

My times are all skewed by games that frequently get left running rather than exited. So for whatever these are worth:

Civilization V
Lego Marvel Superheroes
Lego Batman 3
Lego Movie Videogame
Spelunky
Civilization VI
Football Manager 2010
Gang Beasts
Frozen Synapse
Civilization IV

1. PUBG <--- It was my coping mechanism during my wife's cancer and just kind of stuck since then. by far the leader by a very wide margin.
2. OOTP:18 <---Hey it takes a while to get the Rangers a World Series.....
3. No Man's Sky <-----Play, slowly build hate, uninstall, reinstall for a new patch, rinse repeat.
4. Kerbal Space Program <----This really should be higher. Great game
5. Fallout 4 <----- Loved the game! This was all on one playthrough.
6. Ring of Elysium <----For those times when PUBG was frustrating me. The first season was the best.
7. FOF8 <----- if the other FOFs were on here, they would all be the top spots. I just don't play much anymore. NEED A NEW VERSION!
8. Starbound <----Need to go back to this one, all the time I spent was all early access and I hear its even better now.
9. GTA V <-----Really surprised this isn't higher, but most of the time is the single player storyline
10. Fallout New Vega <------Did I mention I love Fallout? I love Fallout.
Honorable Mention 11. XCom: TFTD <----You old school folks know what this is about. Even still in my signature.

My top 10:

1) Warframe - Kind of surprised by this frankly, probably a lot of hours added having this in the background working from home. - 1,120 hours

2) Rainbow Six Siege - Similar to #1, but not as surprised by how high it is. I always enjoyed doing the terrorist hunts. - 974 hours

3) Grim Dawn - No surprise here, I play this hardcore and enjoy trying out different character types. Great fun, surprised it is not #1. - 949 hours

4) Battle Brothers - Another great game and not a surprise at all. I will have this going in the background while working. Hours are inflated a bit as I will pause or let it wait during battles if I am tied up in something I cannot break away from. - 771 hours

5) Torchlight II - Not a surprise, it was a great game for its time, but in every way was surpassed by Grim Dawn. - 612 hours

6) Slay the Spire - Great game, love how it is always fresh. Will sometimes play while on a conference call to keep from going to sleep. - 359 hours

7) Mount & Blade Warband - Surprised it is still so high on the list as I have not played it in a long time. I guess I should pick up Bannerlord. - 354 hours

8) Elite: Dangerous - Great game, will have this running in the background a bit as well during work during long runs. Have to be in the right mood to play it as it is a sandbox game and you need to set your own objectives. - 343 hours

9) Company of Heroes 2 - Probably my RTS of choice. I feel it is better balanced than Starcraft 2 and the era appeals to me more (although if SC2 was better balanced I think I would like it more). - 293 hours

10) Dominions 5 - Ah, how I wish I could play you more, maybe I need to set up a game with the family during the lockdown. - 244 hours

I am sure League of Legends would trump anything on this list. As I have started playing it quite a bit again since they implemented Clash. Starcraft II would be up here as well as my group that plays league had some players that I first started playing with on SC2.

Honorable Mentions:

11) FTL - would be on the list if all my hours were on the steam version, but I have a ton of hours on my iPad as well. 166 hours

12) Offworld Trading Company - I really enjoy this game, but have never gotten into the multiplayer since none of my friends did. Very good economic game where you need to adapt to the environment you are in. - 131 hours

13) Oxygen Not Included - This is the ideal game to run in the background during work. Set up what you want them to do, the dupes work, and I can monitor while I am working on a presentation, on a conf call, etc. I make sure to run it at slow speed so I can do this. If I speed things up, I cannot do either work or the game effectively. Its also nice that I can pause it if things get too crazy while I am tied up at work. This is rapidly moving up the list. - 129 hours

Nothing surprising to me here, other than to see that I put more time into Civ VI than Civ V.

Looking at my whole list of games played, I'm trying to figure out where the "good game" threshold is based on hours played. For me, it seems to be 20 hours. I have predominantly fond memories of every game above that line and mostly meh feelings about those below.

Almost all of these except CK2 and 7 and 9-11 have major hours of just sitting in the background. If you actually took out the background hours, you'd see a far more different list (and at least two of the FMs would drop off completely). FM 2016 and CK2 are definitely 1-2 with no one else coming close, though.

Not reflected in Steam account
FOF and FOF: TCY, which I played pretty much every day from Christmas 1998 until October 2007, and then still quite a bit until 2013ish. I sure got my money's worth out of Jim Gindin.
EVE Online: Again, pretty much every day from December 2013 to July 2014 and then January 2015 until August 2019.

A follow-up:
So, a week into my COVID-confinement I had 1,331 hours of FM14 under my belt. I was home non-stop until just after July 4th and then week-on/week-off until beginning of October. Been full time since. I have now played 3,123 hours of FM14. Coolest thing about that was I finally got a son in my youth intake who my Head of Youth Development thinks will be a "leading Premier League striker."

I'm not a big Steam guy, my hardware hasn't been capable of playing a lot of stuff I'd really like to be playing for a very very very long time now. And I was a late adopter for Steam with games that could be installed standalone. But with those caveats ...

FM 2014
HOI II
FHM 6
FM Touch 2018
FM 2018
X:Com UFO Defense
Don't Starve
Kenshi
AoW III
Twilight Struggle

Wasn't quite expecting this, but I guess I am an NBA 2K fan. Last few I have been getting on the console so luckily it doesn't completely overtake my list. What's crazy is I didn't think Front Office Football would still make the list as I hadn't played that version in 4 years.

1. NBA 2K12 - 713 hrs
2. NBA 2K11 - 606 hrs
3. NBA 2K16 - 582 hrs
4. OOTP 15 - 470 hrs
5. XCOM: Enemy Unknown - 430 hrs
6. NBA 2K15 - 411 hrs
7. Front Office Football Seven - 333 hrs
8. NBA 2K14 - 293 hrs
9. NBA 2K13 -285 hrs
10. Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition - 234 hrs

Yeah, very little has changed, with a chunk load more FOF8, except that C&C come in at the top of the also rans. I think FOF8 is on about 75% of the time my laptop is on, quite often I just start it up, haul in the files and don't really turn it off until the laptop itself goes off.
