Whatever happened to.......?
...Dave Chapelle? I loved his show on Comedy Central and own both seasons on DVD. He suddenly quit the show due to concerns regarding the direction of the show and he had numerous problems with the producers. He disappeared into thin air for a while (I think he was in Africa or something for a while), and now he is doing stand up and a movie.
But what happened to him? What REALLY happened to him? There must be a lot more to it than just what has been said in regards to the ending of his show. How can he just walk away from such a successful endeavor? Also, I would love to hear some of other's favorite episodes. I will post my favorite at a later time...

He had a nervous breakdown. He has pretty much gone into hiding now, in nearby Yellow Springs, Ohio.

He thought (white) people were misinterpreting some of his skits and treating racism as not a serious deal.

Didn't Charlie Murphy threaten to sue him for injuries sustained during consensual horseplay?

Oprah and Cosby got to him. The two lead the infamous underground B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D., a group of powerful african-americans who try to control african-american performers from casting african-americans in typical stereotypes.
... and Rick James is haunting him.

Didn't he leave Los Angeles in 2004 to go play for Colorado? He's still playing for the Avalanche, right?

Here is the first part of his interview on Inside The Actors studio. The rest of the parts are on youtube also. Here is the link to the first one. The thing that sucks about this interview on youtube is that around part 3 or so the audio gets out of sink, but I still enjoyed listening to it. One of the better interviews, imo, on Inside The Actors Studio.

My absolute favorite sketch from his show is the one with Wayne Brady where they go out on the town.
At one point they are stopped in the car and talking to one of Brady's whores on the corner. She doesn't have as much money to give him as the other's and Brady says to her, "Is Wayne Brady gonna have to choke a bitch?" Damn that episode is funny. I also like the racial draft one and any of the ones with Rick James and/or Charlie Murphy. Charlie Murphy is funny as hell too. Great show....

Yeah, I agree with MJ4H, I watched the show twice, only found one skit to be funny, and was insulted by another, while the rest were just boring. Why invest my time into a comedy show that isn;t funnier? So I never kept watching.

I understand people not liking him... comedy is subjective. What I don't really understand is the need to actually post in this thread about disliking him. When I see threads about shows I don't like or care about I don't even read them, let alone post. *shurg*

That's kind of the thing. The only reason I did it was because he did it in the American Idol thread. I normally wouldn't. ETA: and I agree, it tends to derail the thread from just wanting to discuss something to trying to defend it. That said, I apologize and bow out. Last edited by MJ4H : 01-18-2008 at 04:48 PM. |

He's a talented guy who had an odd show. It's different than anything else because of the length that things go on - it's like watching sketchy comedy from the 70's.
That "race draft" skit was a fun idea - but it went on forever. |

Always loved Chapelle's Show. Not that long before the show ended Starbuck, her brother and I had a chance to see Charlie Murphy and Donnell Rawlings (Ashy Larry) at a comedy club in North Jersey.
It was clear that Charlie Murphy was more of an actor than a stand up comedian. It was especially clear when Donnell Rawlings took the stage. Rawlings was much more high energy than he ever appeared on the show. The whole show was great though. Rawlings shook everyone's hand at the door after the show and let us all take a picture with him which was really cool. |
