Dueling Dynasties- NCAA 2006

I have a habit of playing with two teams on NCAA 2006. Western Michigan (my school) and Florida State (favorite team growing up.) This has the bonus of giving me both a team I can smack the computer with most often, and a team that's a real struggle to improve. It also slows down the advance of the years on the game, so it's not so soon that I have to handicap my recruiting or beat the computer by 30 only half watching the game.

We'll be starting with the 2006 season, as I used 2005 to tweak the sliders along and get a feel for the game.

Speaking of which

Western Michigan Broncos (MAC West)
2005 Record 7-5 (5-3) Lost Houston Bowl 63-38 to San Diego State
#115 recruiting class.

After a 6 game improvement from 2004, the Broncos face a rough opening to 2006, traveling to Iowa and Texas A&M without experience at QB or RB. They will also deal with the loss of Greg Jennings at WR, who had 2057 yards receiving in 2005, and finished 4th in the Heisman voting. The defense returns most starters, but gave up 63 and 59 points in the final two games of the season.

Western Michigan is picked 6th overall in the MAC, 4th in the MAC West, and 90th in the Athlon preseason 119.

Florida State Seminoles (ACC Atlantic)
2005 record 12-1 (9-0) Defeated Purdue 52-21 in Orange Bowl

The Seminole juggernaut seemed destined for a Rose Bowl berth before a end of season 59-24 thrashing at the hands of arch-rival Florida, in a game where Xavier Lee looked a true freshman, and Chris Leak and DeShawn Wynn tore the FSU defense to shreds. They recovered to beat upstart Georgia Tech in the ACC Championship and dismantle the Boilermakers in the Orange Bowl. The 'Noles lose Heisman winner Leon Washington and his 2,100 yards rushing, but Lorenzo Booker is expected to be a more then adequate replacement. The recieving was spread around, as Lee hasn't found a true go-to reciever. Ernie Sims and Antonio Cromartie return to anchor a defense expected to be top 10 yet again, and Doak Campbell Stadium was voted the 5th toughest venue in America.

Florida State was voted 5th in the Preseason 119 and coaches poll, and 6th in the media poll. The Seminoles are voted #2 in the ACC, and 1st in the Atlantic Division.

In season recruiting- Florida State
The Noles have needs at QB, WR, TE and OLB. We're going to target 3 players at each position for the inseason recruiting. Additionally, I'd like to keep my pipeline in Georgia when possible, and expand into the rest of the Southeast if possible.

Quarterback-
1. Reggie Jones, Battle Creek, MI- Pocket passer
2. Ryan Davis, Houston, MS- Balanced
3. Lenny Wilcher, Faribault, MN- Scrambler
Wide Reciever
1. Brennan Chapman, Cullowhee, NC- Balanced
2. Corey Griffin, Frostproof, FL- Balanced
3. Maurice Bailey, Coppell, TX- Balanced
Tight End
1. Roy Sisk, Ft. Knox, KY- Balanced
2. James Hodges, Alpharetta, GA- Balanced
3. Dominic White, Saks, AL- Blocking
Outside Linebacker
1. Max Haynes, Terrell, TX- Run Stopper
2. Ben Cutler, Frankfort, KY- Run Stopper
3. Brent Patterson, Guntersville- AL- Run Stopper

In-Season Recruiting- Western Michigan
Western has a bundle of holes. So many that it will be impossible to fill more then one or two. We're going to focus on WR, OLB (3 spots to fill), and CB for the season, and hope to fill the other 5 need positions in the off-season. We have pipelines in Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, New Jersey and surprisingly, Florida. (I have no idea how the Broncos have so many players from other states) We'll have to use those to try to improve our #115 class.
Wide Reciever
1. Jeremy Brown, Whitehall, OH
2. Nate Walker, Benton Harbor, MI
3. Trevor Choice, Fostoria, OH
4. Erik Hunt, North Bergen, NJ
Outside Linebacker
1. John Culp, Ishpeming, MI
2. Ryan Hall, Tinley Park, IL
3. Greg Frye, Ewing, NJ
4. Nate Carter, Jersey City, NJ
Cornerback
1. Calvin Heath, Northridge, OH
2. Keith Nash, Charlotte, MI
3. David Dowdell, Panama City, FL
4. Lee O'Conner, Detroit, MI

Florida State- Bye
Western Michigan- Bye

Game of the Week
#3 Miami 31, #18 Alabama 21

(Some teams in my dynasty have the right names, and others were auto-named. I got bored with typing names in after about 25 teams.)

SI Cover- He Got Next? Can Miami's Price win the Heisman playing at the DT position

Top 25 Polls- Getting Right to Work- #2 Tennessee is ready to start the season off against Cal.

Top 10- Coaches

No change in conference standings. (only 2 games played)

Recruiting Update
Florida State
Ryan Davis has us #1, while Reggie Jones has us #6, and Lenny Wilcher #7. We'll concentrate on Davis, and Wilcher to a lesser degree because of his scrambling. Jones is dropped.

Davis- 15 points
Jones- 0 points
Wilcher- 10 points

Maurice Bailey and Corey Griffin have us #7, while Brennan Chapman has us #6. No clear leader here. We'll split it and see what happens.

Chapman 9 points
Bailey - 8 points
Griffin- 8 points

Roy Sisk has us 5th, James Hodges 4th, and White 3rd. I like Hodges most of the 3, as he's slightly faster, and has an A in field awareness. Sisk and White are both C+ in that department.

Hodges- 18 points
White - 7 points
Sisk - 0 points

Brent Patterson has us 5th, Ben Cutler 8th, and Max Haynes, 8th. Patterson clearly, with Haynes 2nd as I'd like to open a pipeline to Texas.

Patterson 17
Haynes 8

Western Michigan
Trever Choice has us 1st, Erik Hunt 3rd, Walker 5th, and Brown 8th. Brown's the best of the 4, but it's obviously too much of an uphill battle.

Choice 17 points
Hunt 10 points
Walker 6 points

At linebacker, Ryan Hall has us in the lead, as does Nate Carter. The other two have us near the bottom.
Ryan Hall- 17
Nate Carter- 17

Among the cornerbacks, we're 3rd for Keith Nash, 6th for David Dowdell, 3rd for Calvin Heath, and 5th for O'Conner.

Heath 17
Nash, 16

BYU at Florida State (Doak Campbell Stadium)
Sunny, 77 degrees
Lee and Kirk both go with Florida State in the pregame. (I preferred the tunnel to the studio this year)

Florida State wins the toss and chooses to kickoff. Cismeria drills a kick 7 yards deep into the end zone, and the Cougars will start from the 20. Beck completes a huge 39 yard completion to Morris on 3rd and 8 after the blitzing ‘Noles were caught in man to man deep. BYU keeps trying to audible, but the crowd is causing issues along the edges of the formation. On another 3rd down, Beck’s out pass to Reed is picked off by preseason AA Antonio Cromartie, and he’s off to the races. 88 yards later, despite a solid opening drive, the Cougars find themselves down on the road early.

0 plays, 0 yards (88 yard interception return by Cromartie. Cismeria EP) FSU 7, BYU 0 4:36.

BYU’s second drive starts at the 23 yard line. The Cougars are running a lot of 4-5 wide sets, and Florida State seems content to sit in a Cover-2 defense. Beck drops back, and his pass underneath is caught by HB Nathan Meikle……who gets it stripped by Ernie Sims, and Cromartie is there again to recover it! The ‘Noles will take over at the BYU 21. Lorenzo Booker’s first carry as a starter goes for 14 yards as the wideouts seal the corner on the toss play. 1st and goal. The second play, a counter trap, goes for the final 7 yards, and this one is getting ugly early.

2 plays, 21 yards, 22 seconds (Booker 7 yard run. Cismeria kick) FSU 14, BYU 0 4:06.

If this was a hockey game, the opposing coach would be using his timeout about now. BYU’s 3rd drive starts at the 20 after another touchback. Cismeria’s developed a leg in the offseason. Sims forces yet another fumble, but BYU manages to get a lineman to fall on it. Garvin picks off Beck’s pass on 2nd down. (God, is 25% int’s too high? I didn’t get this many picks in the last 3 games of last season) FSU takes over at the 27. Booker on the draw picks up just under ten yards. Oof. The playaction does nothing as Lee is sacked before he can even look up field. 3rd down is incomplete. Cismeria hit’s a 40 yard field goal.

3 plays, 4 yards, 1:01 (Cismeria 40 yard field goal) FSU 17, BYU 0 2:34
.

This time the kick is through the end zone. Okay. Beck just threw it right to Cromartie. I didn’t even hit a button. I’m about to drop it to 20%. Booker gets 13 yards. The counter loses 2, and it’s 2nd and goal from the 5. Booker walks into the end zone on the lead toss.

3 plays, 16 yards, 46 seconds (Booker 5 yard run) FSU 24, BYU 0 1:40.

These guys are self destructing. BYU starts at the 20. Maybe they should just aim to punt the ball for a change. Meikle picks up 20 on a draw. BYU outgaining FSU 82-41 so far. Buster Davis gets a sack, but tries to rip off Beck’s facemask in the process. 15 yard gain. Hafoka makes a diving catch for 9 yards. First offense I’ve seen out of them with less then 3 wideouts, and they get 2 yards on a counter. An incomplete pass and a draw ends the first quarter

End of 1s t Quarter Florida State 24, BYU 0.

Sims comes on a delayed blitz after 4-5 seconds and sacks Beck. BYU lines up to punt from the FSU 38. Punted through the end zone. Lee hits Rouse 35 yards downfield on a playaction pass. Booker is hit for a 4 yard loss. FSU runs a wacky WR reverse that loses 6. Jeff Bowden traits sneaking through there. Lee scrambles and throws it into double coverage where it’s dropped. Gooch fair catches for BYU at their own 12. On 3rd and 4, the TE rumbles to the 50. The Cougars are starting to move the ball, and Beck’s starting to feel confident. 159-75 yards in favor of BYU. A tipped ball on 2nd down is intercepted in the end zone. FSU starts at their 20. And on 2nd and 7, Lee hits Kenny O’Neal on a crossing pattern that he breaks a tackle, dodges a second guy and rolls 77 yards for a FSU Td.

2 plays, 80 yards, 31 seconds (O’Neal 77 yard pass from Lee, Cismeria kick) FSU 31, BYU 0 2:25

Halftime- Florida State 31, BYU 0

FSU’s opening drive of the 2nd half starts the same way the 1st half ended, with a couple of rushes and a pair of passes down the field

5 plays, 65 yards (Booker 3 yard run) 1:41 FSU 38, BYU 0 5:19

After a BYU punt, Booker fumbles to stall a FSU drive at the BYU 35. The BYU drive is stopped by another FSU int.

At the end of 3, FSU 38, BYU 0

A guy named Affleck is in at QB for BYU. I’m blitzing more. At the 5 minute mark, the 2nd string offense is in for FSU. Wyatt “God” Sexton makes his first appearance after being sitting out last season.

Rouse (who is the backup fullback) adds a 4 yard run with 2 minutes to play.

7 plays, 41 yards (Rouse 4 yard run) FSU 45, BYU 0 2:35.

Final- Florida State 45, BYU 0

Passing
FSU- Lee 5-9, 157yds, 1td, Sexton 1-1 23 yds. BYU Beck 10-21-143 4 int. Affleck 5-12 44, 1 int.
Rushing
FSU Booker 17-135, 3tds, Edwards 4-37, Rouse 3-6 1 td. Lee 5-4, Kelly 1-3. Sexton, 1-0 L. Sam 1 (-6) BYU Meikle 4-20, Small, 1-3, Beck 3- (-13), Affleck 4 (-31)
Receiving
FSU Rouse 3-62, Booker 1-18, O’Neal 1-77, td, Sam 1-23. BYU- Hafoka 4-34, Morris, 3-64, Reed 2-19, Meikle 2-9, Mahuika 2-29, Semanoff 1-1, Niu 1-31.
Defense
FSU-Dickson 2 sacks, Minsey, Norris, Sims 1 sack. Cromartie 2 ints, 1 td. Brown, Garvin, Manning 1 int. Cromarite 1 fumble recovery.
BYU- Jensen, Witherspoon, Gooch 1 sack. Wagner 1 fumb. Recovery.

Postgame thoughts- We'll be dropping human INT's down to 20%. I don't mind a bunch of interceptions if 1 or 2 are computer defenders and I user pick 2-3. This was 4 computer interceptions and one that I took control of. Fairly dominate performance, especially on the ground with the short field.

Our starting tackle, James Blair was involved in a "fraud scandal." Lovely. That doubled the NCAA's interest in me. I don't think I'm going to win either of the first two games, so he's gone for at least two games. We'll make it 3 just to get back to the previous interest. Ugh.

We're going to do a postgame recap from now on, since doing the stream of consciousness last night made the game take almost 2 hours.

Pretty ugly. They scored with 2 seconds left. They scored a lot before that. 62-6 final. Quarterback sucks, defense can't tackle unless it's my "impact" linebacker. (everyone else tackles like it's a powderpuff game, and there's no running game. It looked good after 1, but after that, the quarterback completed 3 passes.

83 degrees, hot.

Another rough road game against a BCS opponent. Engram gets the start at quarterback again, but if he struggles as badly as he did against Virginia, I’m going to start rotating QB’s to get a spark going. The Aggies starting QB threw 7 touchdowns in week 2. Oy.

After a defensive stop at midfield, we take over. 3rd toughest venue to play at. Great. Remind me not to audible. Engram “hit as he throws”…and it’s a fumble. Gee, Brad, maybe you should work on your commentary there. TAMU takes over at the 14. Touchdown Corbett. 7-0 Aggies.

Both first downs I’ve had so far have been Engram scrambling on 3rd and long. Still can’t throw for crap.

We’re moving the ball a little to end the quarter, with a lucky catch and a nice one on one move by Jackson to get open.

End of the 1st - Texas A&M 7, Western Michigan 0

And two sacks drop us back to the TAMU 40. Punt. Wow, an end around that made my defense look stupid. This team sucks. 14-0 Aggies.

We’re moving the ball again. Jackson with a 25 yard td catch! It took us 5+ quarters, but we’re in the end zone!14-7 Aggies.

We’re saved by #3 for TAMU dropping a deep ball. Punt. Sanders is 1-7 throwing for TAMU so far. Another sack. Blocking=teh suck. Offensive PI. That’s a first since NCAA 2001. Corbett rips off a 92 yard td run. I hate having a slow defense. Aggies 21, Broncos 7. They add a field goal before halftime. Ugh.

Halftime- Texas A&M 24, Western Michigan 7

Engram hits Fryer for a 72 yard td pass on the first 3rd down of the 2nd half. We’re not dead yet. TAMU 24, WMU 14.

Next WMU drive, Engram’s starting to feel it, Fryer again to the TAMU 14. And hits him again 3 plays later in the corner. Western is back within 3! The Aggies are forced into another 3 and out. Sanders continues to struggle through the air. Engram is over 300 yards through the air in the 3rd quarter.

End of 3- Texas A&M 24, Western Michigan 21

Engram is sacked on 3rd and goal from the 7. Meyer’s 32 yard field has tied the game early in the 4th. 24-24.

Sanders bones up an option pitch, and WMU has the ball at midfield. And Lemay catches a 54 yard pass for the touchdown and Western has their first lead of the game. Broncos 31-24, with 4:34 to play.

Feldpaush with a tipped interception on 3rd down. This team works a lot better when we’re +1 in turnovers instead of -3. Engram’s in a zone tonight finding Fryer for the 3rd time. This game is about over. A&M turns it over on downs at the WMU 19. We punt the ball back after going backwards. I don’t know how this guy threw 7 touchdowns in 21 attempts last week. Obviously that stat flaw everyone noticed. They turn it back over to me with 17 seconds left. Game. Set. Match.

Western Michigan 38, Texas A&M 24. Color me shocked. Especially after halftime. Why they didn’t keep pounding me with the running game is beyond me.

Nice win over A&M. Even though I am a Chippewa, I would love for any of the Michigan MAC schools to be able to pull these kinds of upsets in the near future.

A Chippewa I'd agree. I don't really care if Toledo and Bowling Green beat teams.

#4 Florida State at Colorado
Folsom Field
70 degrees, clear

Colorado starts with the ball. The Buffs go three and out. We’ll start at our 25. Booker takes the first carry for a first down, and Nessler and Kirk start gushing about his speed. He spearheads a long drive that results in a 16 yard pass from Lee to O’Neal. 7-0 ‘Noles. Colorado manages a couple first downs, but has to punt from midfield.

End of the first- FSU 7, Colorado 0

An FSU drive is stopped on a bad decision by Lee throwing into triple coverage. I really ought to look before I try to throw a cutesy fade route. Colorado can’t move the ball and punts back with 5 to play in the half. FSU will start from the 48. Lee’s throwing some ugly passes, and we’ll punt right back. Colorado with another 3 and out. Mickey’s got this defense in mid-season form already. Another tipped interception kills a Seminole drive. These lob passes are not working.

Halftime- FSU 7-0

Booker finds his way into the end zone from 5 yards out on a quick drive to open the 2nd half. 14-0 FSU
3 and out for the Buffs. Guys, it helps if you throw the ball in the field of play. Their defense is starting to be wore down, as Booker is finding cracks in the interior line and breaking it outside. FSU 21-0. Cromartie makes a diving interception to give FSU the ball back at the CU 27. Booker dives into the end zone on the 4th play of the drive, and this game has gotten ugly in about 5 minutes of game play. Rushing yards.= FSU 187, Colorado 0. Of course, Colorado hasn’t run the ball in about 2 quarters.

Florida State 28, Colorado 0 after 3.

Lee throws his 3rd pick of the half. Completely missed the linebacker sitting in the zone. After another CU punt, our fullback gives up our 4th turnover of the game. Can the defense get a 2nd straight shutout? Looks like it.

Booker, Noles run past Eagles

TALLAHASSEE, FL- Lorenzo Booker's school record 325 yards and 5 touchdowns powered 3rd ranked Florida State past #23 Boston College 38-20. Booker's record day overshadowed what was otherwise a very inept passing attack, led by Xavier Lee's 5-11 passing with 1 interception. Boston College's Callender led BC with 147 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns.

(Booker trots into the endzone for a 3rd quarter touchdown. He broke the school record of 322 yards later in the 4th.)

Next up for the 'Noles is a huge matchup with 2nd ranked Miami in the Orange Bowl. Florida State has not won at the Orange Bowl since 1998.
"It'll be a tough game, and we'll have to get a better effort out of Xavier, and step it up on the defensive side of the ball. We can't give up 150 yards on the ground to Miami and not expect to get destroyed in the Orange Bowl." coach Bronconick said.

The road game is a sore point for the 'Noles after being thrashed 59-24 by Florida at the Swamp. The entire team expects a better effort this time.

Turnovers, Defense doom Broncos
Kalamazoo, MI- 4 interceptions returned for touchdowns. 446 yards passing surrendered. The worst defensive performance in Western Michigan University history. 800 fans remaining at the end of the game, most stirring tar and picking feathers off of chickens.

Toledo 80, WMU 21. Coach Lester was unavailable for comment after the game, needing police protection to leave the field. (The protection made up 100 of the remaining fans.) The Rockets were simply faster, stronger, and dominated play from the 2nd quarter on, when they intercepted back to back Alex Engram passes to turn a 10-0 game into a 24-0 rout.

Noles pummel 'Canes, improve to 4-0

Miami, Fl- The ACC matchup of the season had more in common with ACC games of the year in the 90's, when Florida State dispatched claiments to the conference throne with relative ease every season. Despite Xavier Lee's continuing struggles, FSU rolled over Miami 37-3, behind Lorenzo Booker's 236 yards and 3 touchdowns.

"He's so fast, it's almost not fair," coach Bronconick said after the game. "We're still struggling through the air, but as long as the defense and running game keep playing at this high level, we'll roll with it."

That defense held the Miami offense to 162 yards and added 6 sacks against a Miami team that abandoned the run early in the 2nd half down 13-3. Kenny O'Neal suffered an injury in one of the few down moments for the Seminoles, who will take next week off before diving into the 2nd half of the schedule.

Defense saves day for Broncos

Buffalo, NY- A late fumble return for a touchdown by Chad Feldpausch secured Western Michigan's first MAC win of the season as the Broncos downed the Buffalo Bulls 38-28. Alex Engram led the Broncos on a late drive with 1:30 to play to take a 31-28 lead on a 26 yard pass to Justin LeMay, when Feldpausch's 47 yard fumble recovery sealed the deal.

The fumble by Bulls QB Kyle Daniels overshadowed a 396 yard passing performance. Alex Engram recovered from early jitters to throw for 320 yards to cover the weak rushing attack, led by Mark Bonds 44 yards. LeMay finished with 129 yards to lead all Bronco recievers.

WMU improves on the season to 2-2 (1-1) and will travel to 0-4 Ball State next week.

Tallahassee, FL- Sophomore WR Kenny O'Neal, just off an injury that held him out of the final two quarters vs. Miami, will now miss two games for violating team rules. It is believed that he was caught cheating in a class. He will miss the Wake Forest and Virginia games.
