FOF 5.1/5.1+/5.1a/5.1b Dynasty Thread
FOF2004 Empty Cupboard Career
Atlanta Falcons, Version 5.1
With the release of patch 5.1, it is time to fire up a serious career and chronicle it here.
HOUSE RULES/SETTINGS
1. ROSTER SET: fictional, game-generated 2. EMPTY CUPBOARD: I'll be quick-simming through 2004, then cutting everyone and starting fresh in 2005. My team will never have players from before the 2005 amateur draft.
3. RENEGOTIATIONS: Early on, I'll be playing all-out, testing out the new AI,
4. INJURIES: Set at 200.
5. INFLATION: Default (2.8/8.0)
6. ADDED: If I want to draft a QB in the first round, I have to trade up to get him in the Top 5.7. OTHER: Just in case I forgot anything, or anything else comes up, I'll add it as we go along. Looking forward to taking 5.1 around the block! --Ben

Really interested if 5.1 gets rid of the hired gun quarterback phenomenon. I'd love to see see some QBs stick with a team for a while...and perhaps some mini-AI-driven dynasties. THAT would be cool.
Good luck, Ben!

Me too, the one MAJOR turn off of FOF for me is how players who have great years are never resigned and play for someone else the following year, even after a Super Bowl or big playoff run. If this is fixed, I'll be in FOF bliss. Todd |

2005 ROSTER SHAPING
FREE AGENCY N/A This Year AMATEUR DRAFT PICKS I have the 4th pick in all seven rounds NEEDS Everything, of course. There's a stud QB available who I feel is worthy of the #1 pick, so I trade up. I have to trade the farm to get him: #1's for the next two years, plus this year's 1(4) and 2(4). Since I'm not likely to win much in the next 2-3 years anyway, I feel it worth it.
Only the last pick lost significant points when on the roster. Schwartz, Zaiser, Davison and Malfara all look like long-term starters. DRAFT GRADE: C- LATE FREE AGENCY Nothing but rookies. TRAINING CAMP INCREASES OF NOTE Free agent LDT Dixon Mahoney, who was 19/37 at the draft, is now 22/47, and looking like a potential long-term contributor. 5(4) pick TE Kenny Malfara, rated 22/53 at draft time, is now 26/60. DECREASES OF NOTE None. No draftees are significantly below draft value.

2005 PRESEASON/FINAL CUTS/OUTLOOK
PRESEASON INJURIES OF NOTE No one is worse than probable. FINAL CUTS Already made before posting roster. REGULAR SEASON OUTLOOK POWER RATING: 7. Dead last, of course. ROSTER: 1. Also dead last by far. With a weak offensive line, the plan is to throw short a LOT. QB Donny Schwartz looks like our best player by far, and TE Kenny Malfara and SE Aaron Zaiser both look like worthy targets. Hopefully those three working in concert can win us a game or two this year.

Wow. The changes in this are immediate and obvious. I lost over $90M last year, and just about all of that was a result of paying big bucks for a coach and coordinator. Not signing FA's yet, so no biggie there, but I suspect this is going to have to be watched MUCH more closely than in the past. SD, can you put what time you gave to each part in your next training camp. I would like to know to look at the increases your guys get in training camp Vs. time alloted.
Thanks (whether you know or not.)

2006 ROSTER SHAPING
FREE AGENCY There's only one second-year guy available noticeably better than what I've got. I sign FL Derrick Naslund to a 2-year deal. He looks like he could be a decent receiver. AMATEUR DRAFT PICKS I have the 1st pick in rounds 2-7. NEEDS Lots.
Both Rivera and Stelick may have potential as starting linemen. Keys should be a stud, and Nalen looks like he has a chance to break out. DRAFT GRADE: C- LATE FREE AGENCY We pick up just a handful of guys this time, mainly ones that look like they might have promise, rather than just filling out the roster like we did last year at this time. TRAINING CAMP INCREASES OF NOTE RCB Ike Nalen is up to 22/51. Looking like that 3(1) pick I used on him is going to be worth it. DECREASES OF NOTE 6(1) pick RB Julio Breaux is down to 20/31, 13 full points down from where he was at the draft. He gets cut before the preseason starts.

2006 PRESEASON/FINAL CUTS/OUTLOOK
PRESEASON INJURIES OF NOTE FB Darnell Keys was injured in the final preseason game, and is Out with Plantar Fascilitis, full strength in 14 weeks. No other major injuries to note. FINAL CUTS QB Ellis Wheeler RB Tony Raymond TE Rusty Forbes SE Jared Warwick RCB Michael Davidson WLB Aaron Watson REGULAR SEASON OUTLOOK POWER RATING: 25. Dead last, but improving. ROSTER: 1 Well, I was going to pound the fullback a good bit this year, but with him being injured for most of the year, we'll go back to the short passing game.

Here is a question (it will probably be better answered after the next draft):
How did the draft classes look in the two years you traded the likely number 1 pick away?

I really enjoy these kind of dynasties because I like seeing how people build teams. I was just curious why you went ahead and traded for a franchise qb when you wouldn't have much of a supporting cast for him. Whenever I build from the ground up, qb is usually the last position I fill. I try to get a good O-line at least with some decent skill players first.
I guess that's another one of the great things about this game, there is definitely more than one way to build a winner. I don't think I've ever drafted a quarterback in the first round, I usually look in 2-4 rounds. Looking forward to this dynasty and seeing the game from another perspective. |

2007 ROSTER SHAPING
RESTRICTED PLAYERS The following starters are now RFA's. Those who are underlined are re-signed. RB Raymond Edmondson--His ratings continue to rise a bit, and he wants less than $1M for the year. FB Willie Beyer--Was the starter last year only due to the injury to Darnell Keys, but has solid ratings and wants barely above the minimum. LG Edward Bass--He hasn't done much as a 2-year starter, and wants a deal involving a small bonus. I'm not paying him a bonus. RG Eugene Cheek--Ditto Bass. RT Isaac Austin--Has had two pretty decent years, all things considered, but wants a 3-year deal worth $6.4M. I don't want to give that kind of money to a guy that I'm highly doubtful of as a long-term solution as his position. P Kennedy Zaccardelli--Wants a no-bonus deal, so I sign him up K Maurice Meyer--Ditto Zaccardelli RDE Ben Saleh--Has had two solid seasons, totaling 105 tackles, and has seen ratings rise. He gets a 3-year deal worth $4.8M. LDT Dixon Mahoney--This guy was a 19/37 undrafted rookie free agent, and is now 45/54 with 158 solo tackles in 2 seasons. I have NO problem giving him a 4-year, $16M deal to keep him in Atlanta for a while. SLB Grady Brucebu--Accepts a very small bonus ($130K), so I sign him for 2 years. WLB Cary Winslett--Accepts an even smaller bonus for a 2-year deal. LCB Graham Taylor--Declining ratings, and hasn't been too impressive on the field. RCB Roger Whitfield--Pretty solid-looking red bars now. He gets a 3-year deal worth $3M. SS Stan Cochrane--Secondary leader, wants low bonus. I also re-signed a few backups, but I don't see the need to going into detail on any of them here. FREE AGENCY There are a small handful of worthy-looking guys. Here's who I sign: LCB Joel Franz (40/53)--4yrs,$5.2M. Looks good enough to be a starter. FS Arnold Howard (39/52)--2yrs,$1.77M. Also a mediocre-looking starter. LG Mike Ayers (27/47)--2yrs,$1.16M. Not all that good or a long-term solution, but he could start for me this year, and wanted no bonus. LG Heath Jammer (28/44)--2yrs,$1.16M. Will move either he or Ayers to RG. Same situation as Ayers. RT Ken Sampson (34/47)--2yrs,$1.16M. Identical situation as previous two RDT Ricardo Zabriskie (23/39)--3yrs,$2.24M. Same thing as Ayers/Sampson/Jammer. No-bonus free agent. SLB C.J. Linquist (19/44)--2yrs,$1.42M--Looks like he might have real potential. WLB Nick Gillespie (26/40)--2yrs,$1.42M--Good enough to start for my wretched team, but that's about it. SS Eric Gordon (28/49)--2yrs,$1.61M--Gets a small bonus, but looks like a starting-caliber player for the long-term. These signings won't make us a winner, but they should help us be competitive in more games this year. AMATEUR DRAFT PICKS I have the 3rd pick in rounds 2-7. NEEDS Still lots.
There's a chance that four or five of these guys could start immediately, and that Wayne and Giangrave could be very good players.. DRAFT GRADE: C- LATE FREE AGENCY From: Aaron Zaiser I have decided to hold out until I receive a new contract. As your starting wide receiver last season, I believe I had a solid season. I believe I'm very seriously underpaid, and will not report to camp without a new contract. Ungrateful wretch wants the big bucks already. OK, so he has almost 2,000 yards receiving in two years, but still! Because he's nearly fully developed, I'm going to wait it out as long as possible with him. We pick up some roster fillers. The most notable is QB Crime Dog Rosser, a 3rd-year former 7(14) pick with 18(47) ratings. He could be a decent backup QB, perhaps. TRAINING CAMP INCREASES OF NOTE 5th-round pick C Carlos McCormick jumps up to 26/64, a gain of 8 potential points since the pre-draft evaluation. 2nd-round pick LT Pete Wayne is up to 31/62. Looks like he'll be a very solid player. 3rd-round pick LCB Winston Giangrave looks like he's going to be a stud. He's up to 20/58, 5 current and 12 potential points up from draft time. DECREASES OF NOTE 6th-round pick SLB Stanley Vetter is down to 18/38 now, an overall 7-point drop. 7th-round pick LG J.B. Esslinger drops another 3 potential points, down 7 from predraft.

2007 PRESEASON/FINAL CUTS/OUTLOOK
PRESEASON INJURIES OF NOTE Got through the preseason with nothing major. SS Eric Gordon has a high ankle sprain and is Out, but should be full strength in 6 weeks. FINAL CUTS RB Randall Downs MLB Lester Treu RDT J.C. Espino RDE Johnnie Galvin WLB Cary Winslett TE Zack Becker RCB Josh Banks REGULAR SEASON OUTLOOK POWER RATING: 46. Worst in the NFC, but no longer worst overall, and not glaringly far behind other lower-tier teams. ROSTER: 2 I'm hoping to win 5 games or so. We'll run it a bit more with FB Keys healthy, but still will be passing-oriented.

1. Donny Schwartz looks like a once-in-a-lifetime stud. 2. To see how a marquee QB's contract requests look with the new patch.

2007 REGULAR SEASON
INJURIES OF NOTE QB Donny Schwartz suffered a severe hamstring pull in Week 13, and missed the rest of the year. RCB Roger Whitfield had to have reconstructive knee surgery due to an injury the same week. He'll miss part of next year. LG Mike Ayers tore his rotator cuff very late in the year, but should be ready to go next year. LCB Joel Franz suffered a high ankle sprain in the next-to-last game of the year.. COMMENTS We're no longer a laughing stock. We could go .500 next year.

2008 ROSTER SHAPING
RESTRICTED PLAYERS The following starters are now RFA's. Those who are underlined are re-signed. RB Raymond Edmondson--Ratings rise a bit again. Wants 3-year deal, but with low bonus ($250K). I sign him. TE Kenny Malfara--Averaging nearly 50 catches a year, and continuing to improve. Gets a 3-year deal. FL Derrick Naslund--He hasn't done much. He's not worth the small bonus he wants. LDE Vincent Meyer--Pretty decent pass rusher. I re-sign him to a 2-year deal that is pretty modest. FREE AGENCY I sign a few: RDE Doug Cochrane--38/54--2yrs/$2.4M--He'll be moved to start at LDE, with Vincent Meyer coming in on pass rush downs. SLB Ronnie Spencer--39/50--2yrs/$1.9M--Pretty solid ratings across the board, best at stopping the run. FL Brenden Schafer--38/48--1yr/$810K--Not a good route runner, but he gives us a legit deep threat. I continue to fill holes with decent players. All three of these guys should contribute. AMATEUR DRAFT PICKS I have the 3rd pick in rounds 1-7. The guy I want looks like he should fall to around 7 or 8, so I trade down to 6 with Green Bay. I get their 1(6) pick this year, 3(6) pick this year, and their 2nd-rounder next year. NEEDS I could stand to improve at the following positions: RB, FL, LG, RG, RT, RDT, SLB, WLB, SS
Well, it appears that we filled about half of the remaining holes. Pretty solid. The offense should be set up to put some points on the board this year. DRAFT GRADE: B- LATE FREE AGENCY I move LCB Winston Giangrave to SS, where he'll probably start. I sign a small handful of rookies to fill out the roster. TRAINING CAMP INCREASES OF NOTE Undrafted FA C Perry Hernandez added 9 potential points, putting him at 23/50. He'll challenge for playing time. DECREASES OF NOTE 3(6) pick LG Mario Thonton has dropped 7 potential points, down to 18/44.

2008 PRESEASON/FINAL CUTS/OUTLOOK
PRESEASON INJURIES OF NOTE Nothing too major, really, except that RCB re-injured his knee and is going to miss all of this season as well. Otherwise, we enter the regular season relatively healthy, with just some minor stuff. FINAL CUTS FL Broderick Smith FL Luke Swan LG Kent Hopper LDE Vincent Meyer REGULAR SEASON OUTLOOK POWER RATING: 63. Middle of the pack in the NFC. ROSTER: 22 I'm hoping to break .500 this year. The offense will be a bit more balanced, but still tilted towards the pass.

2008 REGULAR SEASON
INJURIES OF NOTE RCB Ike Nalen required MCL surgery after Week 5. He may miss most of next year. LCB Joel Franz had to have shoulder surgery after Week 12 and missed the rest of the season. COMMENTS On one hand, this was disappointing, but on the other, a little encouraging that a team of mediocre starters and a few stars wasn't a near-playoff team.

2009 ROSTER SHAPING
KEY RESTRICTED PLAYERS Those who are underlined are re-signed... FL Brenden Schafer--He did a solid job at WR3 last year, and gets rewarded with a 2-year deal worth $2.8M. A few other backups are re-signed to no-bonus deals. FREE AGENCY POSITIONS NEEDED TO FILL/UPGRADE: RB, LG, RG, RT, RDE, RDT, MLB, RCB, FS SIGNINGS RDE Floyd Andrews--4.4--3yrs/$4.8M--Pretty solid run stopper and pass rusher. FS Kris Colon--6.9--5yrs/$18.72M--He was a 2nd-Team All Pro last year, and is quite good all around. LG Harry Mayes--6.2--5yrs/$25M--Picked him up in '07 due to an injury, re-signed last year, and now he's getting the big bucks. RB Blake Van Lanen--4.0--2yrs/$2M--Rushed for 4.03 ypc for St. Louis last year. Will become our starter. RG Damon Tayler--3.1--3yrs/$4.99M--Nothing special, but I needed a starter. RDT Bernie Sweat--4.4--2yrs/$3M--Pretty good run stopper. RCB Amos Baumgartner--4.1--2yrs/$2.4M--Pretty solid coverage guy. RT Jackie Finley--3.5--3yrs/$5.1M--nothing special Filled some holes here, and got a couple of really good players in Mayes and Colon. AMATEUR DRAFT PICKS I have the 7th pick in rounds 1-7 NEEDS I could stand to improve at the following positions: MLB, OLB, RB.RT
Still going to be using mediocre running backs, but other wise, the draft appears to have helped fill some holes. DRAFT GRADE: B- LATE FREE AGENCY No significant signings. TRAINING CAMP INCREASES OF NOTE 2nd-year man K Dexter Everett added another 5 points to go to 86/86. 6(7) pick LCB Spencer Carlton is up to 22/50, 5 points up from draft time. 5(7) pick SS Nicky Register is up to 27/50, 6 points up from draft time. 2009 REGULAR SEASON
INJURIES OF NOTE RDE Floyd Andrews played in only the first game of the regular season, then missed the rest due to Plantar Fascilitis, thus opening up a space for 1st-round pick RDE Ray Antel to play immediately. The biggie: QB Donny Schwartz has to have MCL Surgery after Game 3. OUCH!!! LCB Joel Franz tore his rotator cuff in the first half of the season and missed the rest of the way. SLB Ronnie Spencer suffered a severe hamstring pull in Week 6, and missed the rest of the year. COMMENTS Wow. A *real* bummer. Here's hoping Schwartz's injury doesn't do long-term damage.

2010 ROSTER SHAPING
BEGINNING CAP SITUATIONSALARY CAP: $128.6M ROOM UNDER CAP: $58.77M MAX FOR NEW PLAYER: $52.29M INJURY UPDATES FROM LAST SEASON QB Donny Schwartz drops a whopping 31 points, down to 44/51 after his surgery. He looks like he could still be decent, but no longer a star. No other significant point losses due to injuries. FRANCHISE PLAYER None. KEY RESTRICTED PLAYERS Those who are underlined are re-signed... C Carlos McCormick--He continues to improve, but he wants a *big* contract--almost $10M per year. Considering he is, by far, the best available free agent with 6 years or less experience, I give him the big bucks, but I cut the deal down to 3 years, instead of the five he wanted. This is my first experience with haggling with the new AI, and I *really* like it. The overall value of the contract is $9.2M per year, significantly less than he wanted, but he ends up getting more money in year 1 than he asked for, but with a smaller bonus. A real win-win contract, I think. C Perry Hernandez--Was a very solid backup to McCormick, has pretty good ratings (32/57), and is willing to take $2M per year for 2 years. I sign him. FREE AGENCY POSITIONS I'D LIKE TO FILL/UPGRADE: QB, RB, RG, RT, SLB, WLB, SIGNINGS WLB Kyle Kirk--4.5--2yrs/$2.4M--Very good at run defense. Could help out. RB Kyle Mason--3.6--1yr/$1.0M--5th-year man could help tote the rock for us this year. He doesn't look like anything special, though. SLB Kendrik O'Neal--5.4--2yrs/$2.4M--Was 2nd-team all pro last year. Excellent at run stopping and diagnosing plays, decent elsewhere. Filled some holes here, and got a couple of really good players in Mayes and Colon. QB Hardy Tamm--3.8--2yrs/$2.0M--Not fully developed yet, but most of his potential ratings are in the 50's and 60's. Will likely be a backup this year because of... QB Donny Schwartz--5.0--2yrs/$8.4M--Despite the severe decline, he was the best 6th-year-and-under QB available in free agency, so I sign him on the open market. AMATEUR DRAFT PICKS I have the 9th pick in rounds 1-7 NEEDS Of the above positions, the only one that I felt I addressed long-term was SLB, so QB, RB, RG, RT and WLB would all be important to find help in.
Pretty solid draft, it would appear. DRAFT GRADE: B+ LATE FREE AGENCY No significant signings. TRAINING CAMP INCREASES OF NOTE 7(9) pick FS Anthony Matthews jumps up to 20/40 after camp, an increase of 8 potential points from draft time. DECREASES OF NOTE 3(9) pick Cornelius Stallings is down to 15/39 (12 point drop).

2010 PRESEASON/FINAL CUTS/OUTLOOK
PRESEASON INJURIES OF NOTE RT Jackie Finley, last year's starting RT, goes down to the dreaded repetitive concussive syndrome and will miss the entire year. He was nothing special, though, and can be easily replaced. The main negative to this is the wasted salary. FINAL CUTS SE Byron Lane RT Cornelius Stallings LG Mario Thornton WLB Chuck Gerhart RB Randy Giles RB Kyle Mason REGULAR SEASON OUTLOOK POWER RATING: 64. Middle of the pack in the NFC ROSTER: 36 With Schwartz coming off of a major injury, I'd be happy to finish in the middle of the pack.

2010 REGULAR SEASON
INJURIES OF NOTE Schwartz was probable with his MCL surgery in Week 1, so I meant to list him as the #2 QB, starting Hardy Tamm. However, I briefly stuck him at #1 to get an accurate preseason power rating, and forgot to stick him back at #2 for Game 1. He led us to victory, but early in the fourth quarter, had a "career-threatening injury"--same injury. GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!! TE Kenny Malfara broke his fibula in Week 7, and returned in Week 16. In Week 8, RCB Amos Baumgartner had to have reconstructive knee surgery and missed the rest of the year. C Carlos McCormick went down in Week 9 to MCL Damage. SE Aaron Zaiser ruptured his achilles tendon in Week 10. LCB Joel Franz had to have reconstructive knee surgery after Week 10. RDT Bernie Sweat tore his rotator cuff in Week 13. COMMENTS What a year! We used smoke and mirrors to earn our first playoff berth. Hardy Tamm had a nice year taking over as the starting QB (82.5 rating, 3105 yards), but nothing that special. Statistically speaking, we were nothing special neither offensively nor defensively except where it counts most: 5th in scoring, and 7th in least points allowed. We won three games in overtime. No receiver had 750 yards, and no back had 1,000. This was a total team effort, and a bit stunning, quite frankly, considering the injuries to key players that were suffered.

2010 PLAYOFFS--Part 1
WILD CARD ROUND Arizona 27, Green Bay 24 Houston 10, Tennessee 6 Cincinnati 27, New Jersey 21 Tampa Bay 17, Dallas 3 CONFERENCE SEMIFINALS Arizona at Atlanta
ARIZONA CARDINALS OVERVIEW
The Cardinals this year were powered by a bruising running game that led the NFL with 2,159 yards. They got a nice FA pickup in RB Lenny Young this year, who led the team with 959 yards. Complimenting Young was another FA pickup, RB Corey Richard, who chipped in 610 yards. Both were former undrafted free agents in the fourth year of their careers. Neither had done much before this year. Their #1 QB, Chris Gillespie, was injured after five games and had to go on the IR. His backup, QB Bucky Hartman, threw for 2,589 yards in 11 starts, with an 83.7 passer rating. Not surprisingly, to have mediocre backs lead the league in rushing, it takes a strong o-line, and the Cards had one. Defensively, Arizona stellar against the run--1st in fewest yards allowed, and 6th in lowest yards per carry. If their defense is vulnerable anywhere, it is to the pass. We beat them fairly handily in the regular season as Tamm threw for 248 yards, 3 TD's and 1 INT. We took a 17-3 lead on 'em and forced them to throw a good bit in that game.
ATLANTA INJURY REPORT
Besides the major injuries mentioned in the last post, two minor ones could really set us back today: TE Kenny Malfara and FL Brenden Schafer will both miss this week, but may be able to play next week if we win.
GAME REPORT
The game started out with an exchange of 3 and outs and punts. Arizona gained 24 yards on the exchange, and took over on their 44 for their second possession. They hit two passes to move into our territory, but stalled at the 33, and missed the 50-yard FG. We went three and out again, and punted into their end zone next. Again the Cards moved the ball a bit, into our territory, but this we stuffed Lenny Young on 3rd and 1 at our 41, and they punted again, pinning us deep in our own territory. On the first play of our next drive, Van Lanen FUMBLED, and the Cards were in business on our three. After a false start penalty, Hartman found Young in the end zone for an 8-yard TD pass, and we trailed 7-0 with 3:55 to play in the quarter. Our offense continued to sputter, going three and out once again before punting it away. Arizona converted a 3rd and 8 with a 10-yard run by Young on the penultimate play of the first quarter, then on the last play completed a pass into our territory for another first down. Things were NOT looking good as the first quarter ended. We had no first downs at this point, and the Cards were on the move.
Four more carries by Young, Richard, and Harman netted two first downs to begin the quarter, and the Cards were in business on our 26. The defense then stiffened. Floyd Andrews blocked a 1st and 10 pass, and Dixon Mahoney hurried Hartman into a bad throw on 3rd and 7. The Cards hit the 45-yard field goal, and led 10-0 with 11:29 to play in the half. On the first play of the next Drive, Van Lanen gave us our first 1st down with a 16-yard scamper around left end. Tamm converted a 3rd and 8 to get us up to midfield. FB Darnell Keys then rumbled 15 yards on 2nd and 10 to put us on the Arizona 35. We slowly moved it down closer, converting two more third downs, before an offensive holding penalty as we neared paydirt pushed us back to 3rd adn 17 on the 18. We were unable to convert, and settled for a field goal, cutting the lead to 10-3 with 3:38 to play in the half. Arizona got one first down on their next possession, but nothing more, and the clock ran out on our final possession of the half while we were still around our own 20 yard line. We started the second half with the ball, and tried to drive. Key plays early in the drive were an 11-yard run by Van Lanen on 2nd and 10, an 18-yard Tamm to Sammie Farrell completion, and another 18 yard completion to Gilbert Boyer on 2nd and 15. These plays got us into Arizona territory, but we would go no further, and punted, downing it at the Cardinal 7-yard-line. The defense came up with a BIG three and out series, with all three tackles being made by FS Kris Colon, and after the punt we had the ball on our own 42. Tamm hit Farrell for 13 yards to put us in Cardinal territory, then hit him again on 3rd and 11 to take us down to the 30. On 2nd and 7 from the 27, Raymon Edmondson scampered all the way around right end into the end zone to tie the ball game! Arizona got one first down on their next possession before punting it back to us again. We took over on our own 26 with 3:03 to play in the 3rd quarter. Tamm hit K.C. Warfield, an in-season FA pickup who was only on the team due to injuries to other players, on two consecutive passes for a total of 31 yards, and we found ourselves on the Arizona 37. The third quarter ended with a Tamm pass down that gave us a first down on the Arizona 11.
On the second play of the fourth quarter, Van Lanen took the sweep around the right side for a 10-yard TD, to give us our first lead of the day. Hartman tried to hit the deep ball on the first play of the next drive, but Kris Colon made another big play, picking off the pass and returning it all the way back to the Arizona 20.Two Van Lanen carries gave us a first down on the 10, but a sack allowed on first and goal hurt our chances of scoring, and we had to settle for a 34-yard FG to give us a 20-10 lead with 11:47 to play. Our defense stopped them in three plays on the next possession, as theirs did us. After the exchange of punts, Arizona had the ball with 8:18 to play on their own 20. Floyd Andrews sacked Hartman on 2nd and 8, causing him to fumble. Doug Cochrane recovered, and we were once again deep in Arizona territory after a turnover with the football. Van Lanen carried twice for 2 yards, then Tamm hit Warfield on a critical 3rd and 8, getting us down to the three. Two more Van Lanen carries made it 27-10 with 4:44 to play. The Cards scored a meaningless TD with 1:06 to play, but Warfield (CLUTCH FA pickup) recovered the onside kick, and that was that. FS Kris Colon was named game MVP, as well he should have, with 11 tackles, 2 assists and the big INT and return. Van Lanen carried 27 times for 97 yards and 2 TD's, and our defense held the vaunted Arizona rushing attack to 3.2 yards per carry on the day, and also came up with 2 big turnovers that gave us 10 points--the margin of victory in this one. Our improbable season continues as we advance to the NFC Championship game at Minnesota.
