Friday April 19th: Stars (8-7) At Reds (9-7)
Fernandez labored through 5.2 innings but left up 5-2. Our pen would allow them to tie it in the 8th but Burnitz hit a 2 out RBI single in the top of the ninth to give us the lead back. They would get two men on in the bottom of the ninth but Alan Embree came on to record a fly out and a strikout and get the save. Woohoo. Burnitz had 3 hits, Helton had 2 RBI. Felix Jose was 4-4 with 3 RBI and Reggie Sanders had 3 hits and 2 RBI for the Reds.
Final Score: Stars 6 Reds 5

Saturday April 20th: Stars (9-7) At Reds (9-8)
We jumped out to a 7-1 lead and Nomo did everything he could to give me a heart attack but he went 6 and left with 8-5 lead. That lead would go away in the seventh when Bushing allowed 3 runs, all on homers to Reggie Sanders and Joe Oliver. We would come right back to score 3 runs off of Chris Hammond in the top of the ninth to go up 11-8. They loaded the bases with 1 out off a tired John Hope but Alan Embree came in and got the final two outs to pick up the save and send us to our 3rd straight win. Helton went 2-6 with a homer and 4 RBI. Womack and Eusebio each had 3 hits. Reggie Sanders homered twice and Kevin Mitchell had 3 hits.
Final Score: Stars 11 Reds 8

Sunday April 21st: Stars (10-7) At Reds (9-9)
Hamilton left after five uninspired innings and us trailing 4-1. They're pen shut us down the rest of the way as they stopped our little win streak and salvaged a game in the series. Kevin Mitchell blasted 2 homers, seems everyone is doing that to us. Eric Young had 2 hits.
Final Score: Reds 5 Stars 2

Bill Hurst is ready to come off the DL. Chris Bushing and his 13.50 ERA goes back down to AAA.

Monday April 22nd: Stars (10-8) At Astros (8-10)

Reynolds pitched 6.1 really good innings before tiring but our pen got us out of the seventh unscathed and we led 3-0 against Rafael Quirico. Our pen would hold the shutout and we get a nice win to open the series. Kevin Young and Eusebio each had 2 hits.
Final Score: Stars 3 Astros 0

Tuesday April 23rd: Stars (11-8) At Astros (8-11)
Steve Cooke went five and left tied 4-4. He had some trouble with the long ball but pitched decently given that lineup. Our pen would allow 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth but we would regain the lead over the next two innings. Up 8-7 in the bottom of the ninth John Hope put 2 men on and Alan Embree allowed a 3 run game winning homer to Eddie Taubansee. Damnit, damnit, damnit. Eusebio was 4-5, Goodwin had 3 hits, Spiers had 2 RBI. Bagwell was 4-5 with 2 RBI and Sveum and Taubansee had homers.
Final Score: Astros 10 Stars 8

Batten down the hatches. Alex Fernandez will miss his next start thanks to a forearm strain but the big hit is Shane Reynolds has been diagnosed with a slight tear in his labrum and will miss around 3 months. Bleh. Aaron Sele will be called up to start tomorrow in place of Fernandez and then everyone else will move up till we fall in line with this five.

Wednesday April 24th: Stars (11-9) At Astros (9-11)
Seles major league debut got off to a bang with a 37 pitch, 4 run first inning that included a 3 run shot from Jeff Bagwell.
He would end up going 5.2 and leaving down 5-3. We would storm ahead with 4 seventh inning runs. Up 7-5 in the ninth, Embree allowed Finley and Gonzalez, the effin lefties he's in there to get, to get on. A tired Hope came in and allowed the tieing runs. A worn out Paul Abbott pitched an amazing 3 scoreless innings. As we went to the bottom of the 13th we were out of relievers so we had to bring in tomorrows scheduled starter Hideo Nomo. Let's see, in the 13th we had the bases load and Helton flied out. In the 14th Womack was stranded on 3rd. Nomo pitched an AMAZING 4 innings and in the 18th frickin inning we pushed 2 runs across off of Butch Henry to take a 9-7 lead. Nomo would get the last 3 outs as we get out of Houston with perhaps the biggest win in franchise history. Abbott and Nomo combined for 9 shutout innings when they were both tired. Just an amazing game. Hulse, Burnitz, Womack and Eusebio each had 3 hits. Burnitz had a homer and 4 RBI. Bichette had 4 hits and Bagwell had 3 RBI for them.
Final Score: Stars 9 Astros 7 (18 Innings)

We've got some major work to do to set our pitching. We're gonna go with 12 pitchers for a couple of days, calling up John Detmer to start tomorrow. Nomo will be pushed back and probably start 3 or 4 days from now. David Hulse will go down to AAA. Worst part is that tomorrow is a day game at home and our guys have got to be exhausted. We sit in 2nd place just a game behind the first place Dodgers.

Thursday April 25th: Stars (12-9) Vs Expos (13-8)

Detmer pitched an outstanding 7 innings and left down to their ace Ken Hill just 2-1. Our bullpen would allow 5 runs over the next couple of innings and we trailed 7-2 going into the bottom of the ninth. We cut it to 7-6 thanks in part to a 3 run double from Helton off of John Wetteland but with runners on 1st and 2nd and 2 outs Womack popped out to end the game. Damn. Helton was 3-4 with 4 RBI. Darrin Fletcher was 3-5 with a homer and Mosies Alou homered for them.
Final Score: Expos 7 Stars 6

After the game we learned that John Hope has a pec strain and will be unavailable for a few days. We send Detmer back down to AAA and call up RP Dennis Moeller.

Friday April 26th: Stars (12-10) Vs Expos (14-8)
Hamilton pitched 7 really quality innings and left up 5-3. John Ericks would pitch a big 1-2-3 ninth for the save as we get a very nice win. Jordan and Hernandez had 2 hits, Eusebio and Tramell had 2 RBI. Marquis Grisson homered for them.
Final Score: Stars 5 Expos 3

Saturday April 27th: Stars (13-10) Vs Expos (14-9)
Steve Cooke imploded in the 6th and left after 5.2 down 8-2. We would score 4 in the seventh but Urbina and Wetteland would close us down over the final two innings. A dissapointing loss. Counsell and Helton each had 2 RBI. Grisson had 4 hits and 5 RBI for them. I really want to get a win tomorrow before an off day Monday.
Final Score: Expos 8 Stars 6

Sunday April 28th: Stars (13-11) Vs Expos (15-9)
Nomo went 7 innings and left in a 5-5 tie. Our pen held it to a tie score and then with 1 out in the bottom of the ninth Jeromy Burnitz crushed an Ugeth Urbina fastball over the left field wall for the win. F Yeah! Womack had 3 hits. Matt Stairs homered for them and Delino DeShields had 2 RBI. This win pushes us half a game into first place. Unreal. Attendance was 6,600 which is also unreal.
Final Score: Stars 6 Expos 5

Monday April 29th: Off Day
We send Moeller back down to AAA and bring Hulse back up. Our staff will pick up it's normal rotation tomorrow of Fernandez, Sele, Hamilton, Cooke, Nomo.

Not much can be said about the hitting other than Holy Mackerel. We have just been hitting and running and running and hitting all month long. I know at some point will slump. I just hope it isn't all at once. Helton (4th), Goodwin (5th) and Spiers (8th) are all in the top 10 in hitting in the NL. Heltons 25 RBI put 2nd in that category and Goodwin and Womack are 1-2 in the majors in steals. Goodwin is tied for 2nd in the NL in runs scored. Eric Youngs stolen base percentage is about the only thing I can even complain about a little.

Now then, I think I can find a complaint here. Alex Fernandez has risen to the occasion. Everyone else jumped in the toilet and begged to be flushed. I guess Bill Hurst has been a bright spot but it's such limited duty that I can't form a judgment yet. Nomo does lead the NL in strikeouts. I will say this. Our pen has not all been together as I imagined it very much. Pall will return in a few days and hopefully they can straighten themselves out. Our lefties have been X P Ali Trocious and they need to step their friggin game up. As for our starters, what can be said? Cooke, Hamilton and Nomo need to seriously raise their games. Unfortunately for me with Reynolds down and Sele already called up I really don't have any better minor league alternatives, although John Dettmer was solid in his spot start. We need to get better, that's just the bottom line.

Down in the minors, Carlos Lee & Juan Encarnacion are just about ready for A ball, we will move them up after the amateur draft. Tatis and Podsednik are gonna spend all year in A ball although Podsednik is killing it down there. Tejada, Matsui and Drew are killing AA pitching but it's not time to move them yet, I may keep all 3 of them there all year. Willie Greene is really growing at AAA, he's looking more and more like my 3rd basemen next season. Javier Vasquez is having a hard time adjusting in Rookie ball but i'm not sounding any alarms yet. Ryan Rupe is having the same problem at A Ball. Teut and Eckenstahler are pitching solidly at rookie ball.

Overall I can't be any more pleased with my team. Sure I want the pitching to be better but it's been a hell of a month and while I realize the odds of us contending are pretty long i'm gonna ride this as long as I can. The thing is, I've never once felt over matched by a team this year. So who knows how long we can ride this wave?

Around The League In April

The Mets hold a 1 game lead over the Expos in the NL East while the Phillies, Pirates and Cardinals all hover in shooting distance. We lead the NL West but the whole division is separated by just 3 games. Cleveland holds a half game lead over the Orioles in the AL East but Detroit and the Yankees are right there as well. The upstart Mariners lead the AL West by .5 games over the White Sox while the Angels and Twins hang on from the outskirts.

Mike Sharperson at .439 and Baltimores David Segui at .433 lead their respective leagues in hitting. Frank Thomas at 9 and Kevin Mitchell at 8 are the home run leaders. Pedro Munoz of the Twins with 28 and Reggie Sanders of the Reds lead their leagues in RBI. A number of pitchers including Clevelands Mark Clark, Danny Jackson of the Yankees, Tim Wakefield of Pitsburgh and the Padres Tim Scott. Baltimores Mike Mussina leads the AL with 44 K's.

The Braves lost John Smoltz till August at the earliest with an abdominal tear. Barry Larkin of the Reds broke his foot and wont be back till June. Young Milwaukee pitcher Tim Hudson has an elbow injury that will cause him to miss the season. Minnesota ace Kevin Tapani injured his shoulder and is expected to miss up to four months. White Sox ace Wilson Alvarez was lost for the year with an arm injury.

Tuesday April 30th: Stars (14-11) At Giants (12-13)
We catch the Giants minus Barry Bonds, who's been on the DL since April 20th with a high ankle sprain.

Alex Fernandez went 7.2 strong innings and left tied at 2-2. It stayed that way till the bottom of the ninth when Hope put 2 men on and Embree allowed a game winning single from Marvin Bernard. Eff me. Young and Helton each had 2 hits.
Final Score: Giants 3 Stars 2

Wednesday May 1st: Stars (14-12) At Giants (13-13)
Aaron Sele went 6 really good innings and left up 2-1 against their ace Bill Swift. We led 3-1 going to the ninth and Brian Jordan hit a 3 run homer to put it away. King, Embree and Ericks combined for a scoreless final 3 innings. Goodwin had 3 hits and a steal, Young had 2 hits and a steal.
Final Score: Stars 6 Giants 1

Well kick me in my ding a ling. Todd Helton has a sprained knee and will miss about 10 days. No choice but to DL him. We call up 1B Pedro Castellano. Hansen will play 1B vs righties with Counsell moving to 3B and Castellano will play 1B vs lefties. These next 15 days just became incredibly important.

Thursday May 2nd: Stars (15-12) At Giants (13-14)
Son of a monkeys asshole. Hamilton was up 2-0 and pitching a gem with 2 outs in the 8th when Dave Martinez hit a 2 run homer off of him. We pushed two across in the top of the 11th and Kevin King got the final 3 outs for a huge win in what could of been a heartbreaker. Spiers and Counsell each had 2 hits.
Final Score: Stars 4 Giants 2

Don Pall is ready to come off of the DL. John Ericks goes down to AAA.

Friday May 3rd: Stars (16-12) Vs Braves (14-13)
We got out to a 4-0 lead against Steve Avery and Cooke went six, leaving with a 4-2 lead. Kevin King would allow a 2 run homer to Damon Berryhill in the eighth to tie it up. Hurst and Embree would join forces to give up two ninth inning runs. Huzzah to our bullpen. Jay Howell finished us off in the ninth and this one really sucks. Brian Jordan homered, Womack had 3 hits and Eric Young had 3 RBI.
Final Score: Braves 6 Stars 4

Saturday May 4th: Stars (16-12) Vs Braves (14-13)
We scored five times in the fifth against Tom Glavine to back Nomo who left after six with a 6-4 lead. We would add a few more runs and King, Embree and Pall would each pitch a scoreless frame as we rolled to victory. Goodwin had 3 hits, 2 RBI and 2 steals. Young was 2-5 with 3 steals while Brian Jordan went 2-3 with 3 RBI.
Final Score: Stars 9 Braves 4

Sunday May 5th: Stars (17-13) Vs Braves (15-14)
Up 1-0 in the seventh against Brad Woodall, Fernandez would give up a 2 run Tyler Houston homer to give the Braves a 2-1 lead. We tied it in the bottom of the eighth and then in the ninth with Spiers on 3rd, Bill Hulse pinch hit and hit a slow roller to 3rd that he legged out to allow the winning run to score off of Jay Howell and gives us the series win and push us to 5 games over .500. Spiers had 2 hits and Carlos Hernandez homered.
Final Score: Stars 3 Braves 2

We're in 1st place, a half game ahead of the Dodgers as we welcome them to town tomorrow for a giant 3 game series. They'll be without CF Lance Johnson who's on the DL with an achilles strain.

Monday May 6th: Stars (18-13) Vs Dodgers (18-14)
Aaron Sele vs Kevin Gross was the match up and Sele pitched an excellent game. Unfortunately Eric Karros was in a groove and his two homers paced the Dodgers to a 3-3 tie through seven innings. Paul Abbott would give up an RBI single to Karros in the eighth to put them ahead. Bill Hurst would allow a run in the ninth and we went to the bottom of the inning down 5-3. Brian Jordan would hit a solo pinch hit homer but Todd Worell settled in after that to shut us down and get the save as they take game one of the series. Karros was 3-4 with 2 homers and 4 RBI. Attendance was 9,500 which I guess is better than 6,000.
Final Score: Dodgers 5 Stars 4

Tuesday May 7th: Stars (18-14) Vs Dodgers (19-14)
Paced by solo homers from Spiers and Burnitz, Hamilton went 7 strong innings and left up 2-1. Hope pitched a perfect eighth, we got a run in the 9th and Don Pall put em down in order in the ninth for the save. Big win.
Final Score: Stars 3 Dodgers 1

Wednesday May 8th: Stars (19-14) Vs Dodgers (19-15)
Steve Cooke dueled Orel Hershiser through seven innings but left down 2-1 as Orel was dealing. He didn't let up a hit till the 6th inning. Embree surrendered 2 ninth inning runs to grow their lead and Orel finished it out. Tough loss, we just couldn't touch Hershiser today. Womack and Spiers had steals.
Final Score: Dodgers 4 Stars 1

Hideo Nomo has a stress fracture in his foot and will miss close to two weeks. Yay. We DL him and recall John Dettmer but since we have an off day tomorrow and again in 4 days we'll stay on a 4 man rotation through next weekend and use Dettmer out of the pen till we need a start from him.

Friday May 10th: Stars (19-15) At Astros (18-15)
We jumped all over Mark Portugal and while Fernandez wasn't sharp he did go 6 innings and left up 7-6. We would rock their pen and roll to a win in the series opener. Eric Young had 4 hits, 4 RBI and 2 steals, Spiers had 3 hits and Womack had 2 hits and 2 steals.
Final Score: Stars 11 Astros 6

Saturday May 11th: Stars (20-15) At Astros (18-16)
Sele was good for 6.1 but Embree and Hope would allow 2 runs behind him and they led 4-2 after seven innings behind Daryl Kile. We would score 3 times in the top of the eighth off of Kile and Billy Wagner to take the lead. King and Pall would each pitch a perfect inning as we get an impressive win over the Astros. Hulse had 3 hits, Spiers had 2 hits and 2 RBI. Luis Gonzalez was 3-4 and Bichette had 2 RBI for the Stros. We are now 6 games over .500 for the first time ever but still half a game behind the Dodgers.
Final Score: Stars 5 Astros 4

Wonderful news as Don Pall is again having issues with shoulder inflammation. He's out about a month. Yay! John Ericks gets recalled and we'll again go to a bullpen by committee.

Sunday May 12th: Stars (21-15) At Astros (18-17)
We jumped on Rick Reed for four quick runs in the first two innings. Hamilton pitched well except for the 4th where he gave up a couple of homers and he left after 6 up 5-3. King, Embree and Abbott closed it out and we leave town with an impressive sweep. Brian Jordan was 2-4 with a homer and 4 RBI. Finley and Gonzalez homered for the Astros.
Final Score: Stars 7 Astros 4

Monday May 13th: Off Day
We head to Los Angeles for another showdown with the Dodgers. They own a half game lead on us so this is obviously a very vital series.

Down 1-0 in the fifth inning we got to Hershiser for 6 straight hits and 4 runs. Cooke would give it all back in the bottom of the inning and we ended the fifth inning tied at four. We would take the lead in the top of the sixth but Tim Naehring would club the game winning blow in the bottom of the inning via a 3 run homer. Damnit. Naehring and Boggs had 3 hits each and Offerman added a homer. Goodwin was 2-5 with 2 RBI.
Final Score: Dodgers 8 Stars 5

Tony Womack has a strained tricep and will miss 4 days. Great.

Wednesday May 15th: Stars (22-16) At Dodgers (24-15)
Fernandez left after 6 down 3-1 to Erik Hanson, then in the 8th we exploded, sending 11 men to the plate and scoring 7 times to take an 8-3 lead. Dettmer pitched the final two innings to secure the win and set up a big game 3 tomorrow. Eric Young had 3 hits, Kevin Young had 2 RBI. Wade Boggs was 3-4 for them.
Final Score: Stars 8 Dodgers 3

Thursday May 16th: Stars (23-16) At Dodgers (24-16)
Man. Sele pitched seven brilliant innings but left with us trailing Ramon Martinez 1-0. In the top of the ninth David Hulse singled in Spiers to tie the game. Then in the 10th, Jeromy Burnitz hit a 2 run homer off of Todd Worrell to put us up 3-1. In the bottom of the 10th with runners on 1st and 2nd Paul LaDuca hit a double play ball to Spiers who threw it away and allowed them to tie the game. In the bottom of the 12th Lance Johnson would lace a game winning single that scored Lenny Harris to give them the win and the series. Drats. Piazza and Harris had 3 hits each and Lance Johnson had 3 RBI.
Final Score: Dodgers 4 Stars 3

Helton comes off the DL tomorrow, hopefully he provides a pick me up to a dejected team. These games were very important but we can't lose focus. There's still a lot of baseball to be played and we've got to keep picking up wins. It'll be interesting to see what our attendance is tomorrow when we play the Reds.

Hamilton gave up just one earned run in seven innings and left with a 7-3 lead. Our pen closed things out for a nice bounce back win. Helton and Eusebio had 3 hits and 2 RBI each.
Final Score: Stars 8 Reds 3

Saturday May 18th: Stars (24-17) Vs Reds (17-26)
A tough loss as Cooke pitched well, but a 3 run fifth by the Reds paced them and Scott Klingenbeck and their pen held us at bay to get the win. Wallach had a 2 run homer. Trammell had 2 hits for us.
Final Score: Reds 4 Stars 2

Sunday May 19th: Stars (24-18) Vs Reds (18-26)
Bleh. Dettmer and then Abbott combined to give up seven runs in the 4th. We came all the way back to tie it at 7-7 in the 7th but Hurst and King would give up four runs in the eighth and that was that. Womack was 4-5 with 2 RBI. Felix Jose and Tim Wallach had 3 hits each for them.
Final Score: Reds 11 Stars 8

Monday May 20th: Off Day
Nomo is ready to come off the DL. He'll start tomorrow. We really need to regroup here. Our pen is in a bad way. They're overworked and just not real good at the moment. We sit 2 games behind the Dodgers as we head to New York to play the first place Mets.

We got a great start from Nomo as he threw 8 innings of one run ball and we got to Sid Fernandez early and pick up the win. Helton had 3 hits including a 3 run homer. Greg Vaughn hit a solo shot for them.
Final Score: Stars 6 Mets 2

3B Kevin Young has a dislocated shoulder and will miss a week. Rather than waste his roster spot we DL him and bring Pedro Castellano back up.

Wednesday May 22nd: Stars (25-19) At Mets (27-17)
What a wild game. They scored 4 times in the second off of Alex Fernandez but we would come back and score four of our own in the 3rd. Down 9-7 we plated four runs in the seventh. Hurst and Embree closed it out for a big come from behind win on the road. Burnitz was 3-5 with a homer and 4 RBI, Helton was 3-5 with 3 RBI, Womack had 2 hits a homer, a steal and 3 RBI. Jeff Kent was 3-5 with 3 RBI for them.
Final Score: Stars 11 Mets 9

Thursday May 23rd: Stars (26-19) At Mets (27-18)
Son of a monkeys butthole! Sele and Gooden had a good old fashioned pitching duel. The only run through the first 7 innings was a Burnitz homer. Sele went 7.1 and it was 1-0 with 1 out in the ninth when Jay Buhner hit a solo homer off of John Hope to tie it. Vaughn would single and then Surhoff hit a gapper off of Embree to score him and give them the win. So effin close to the sweep and a wasted gem from Sele. Damnit.
Final Score: Mets 2 Stars 1

We head home to face the Braves, both of us are 3 games behind the Dodgers who have won five in a row.

Friday May 24th: Stars (26-20) Vs Braves (26-20)
Hamilton went 6 solid innings and left up 3-2. We added a couple runs and King, Embree, Hurst and Hope finished it out. Eric Young was 3-4 with 3 RBI and Helton had 2 hits. Chipper had 3 hits and Justice had 2 RBI for the Braves.
Final Score: Stars 5 Braves 2

Saturday May 25th: Stars (27-20) Vs Braves (26-21)
Steve Cooke threw seven excellent innings and left up 3-2 against Brad Woodall. Embree, Abbott and King closed out the final two innings as we secured our 2nd straight win. Nice. Brian Jordan had a 2 run homer that was the difference.
Final Score: Stars 3 Braves 2

Sunday May 26th: Stars (28-20) Vs Braves (26-22)
Nomo got lit up in the first, giving up four runs, three of which came on a David Justice homer. He would settle down and go seven before leaving down 5-3 to Tom Glavine. Their pen would keep us in check as they salvage a game in the series.
Helton was 2-3 with an RBI & Young was 2-5 with an RBI. Attendance was over 8,000 the past two games so that's something.
Final Score: Braves 5 Stars 3

Monday May 27th: Off Day
We're now 4.5 games behind the Dodgers who are on a 9 game win streak. The only consolation is that they need to cool off at some point, we just need to keep plugging away. We head to San Diego where Fred McGriff has left for NY and Jose Canseco has missed most of the month with a leg injury leaving them with a considerably less formative lineup.

Tuesday May 28th: Stars (28-21) At Padres (17-33)
Fernandez pitched a wonderful seven innings and left with a 4-2 lead. We add a few more runs and our pen shut them down as we pick up the win in the series opener. Goodwin was 3-5 with a steal and Hansen homered. Mariano Duncan and Sheffield each had 2 hits for the Padres.
Final Score: Stars 6 Padres 2

Wednesday May 28th: Stars (29-21) At Padres (17-34)
Sele didn't allow a hit through the first four innings but gave up 3 runs in the 5th and left down 3-2. We came storming back for 3 of our own in the sixth and Abbott pitched 3 solid innings as we pulled out a nice win. Counsell was 2-4 with 3 RBI and Eusebio had 3 hits. Benito Santiago homered for the Padres.
Final Score: Stars 7 Padres 5

Thursday May 28th: Stars (30-21) At Padres (17-35)
We jumped on Willie Adams for 4 first inning runs, all coming on a Brian Jordan grand slam. Adams would then not allow a hit for the next 7 innings while Joey Hamilton would give up the lead and leave after seven down 5-4. Not happy with his performance. It was still 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth when Jeromy Burnitz singled off of Akinori Otsuka to bring in Womack. Dave Hansen would then single in Burnitz to give us the lead. John Hope would come in and get the save to give us the sweep and a HUGE win in a game that looked like we had let slip away. Nice.
Final Score: Stars 6 Padres 5

Tests revealed a slight break in Aaron Seles collar bone and he'll be out about 4 weeks. Dettmer will get the call up.

We've obviously had a fair bit of regression but most of our guys are still right in line with what I expect from them. Brian Jordan has been a revelation and his playing time has increased some at the expense of Womack, but it's a good problem to have. 2 months in and I can honestly say that no one is under performing.

The starters have started to come around. Nomo, Hamilton and Cooke still have ERA's that are too high but they've given me some solid outings lately so i'm ok with how they're doing. Sele being hurt is really frustrating because I'm very interested in how he'll grow. He's impressed me so far.
Our pen has had a very good couple of weeks and I'm hoping they've turned the corner.

The Dodgers hold a 4.5 game lead on us in the West.
Cleveland has been impressive all year and has a 3 game lead on the Orioles in the AL East.
The White Sox have had a strong month and lead the Mariners by 3.5 in the AL West.

Wade Boggs .405 average leads the majors while Chuck Knoblauch of the Twins leads the AL at .381. Californias Jim Edmonds and Oaklands Jason Giambi lead the majors in homers with 16. Greg Vaughn of the Mets and Matt Williams of the Giants pace the NL with 15. Orel Hershisers 8 wins are best in the majors while Curt Schilling of Philly leads the majors in K's with 80. Goodwin with 27 and Womack with 25 are 1-2 in the majors in steals. Kenny Lofton of Cleveland has 49 runs to lead all of baseball, Goodwins 44 has him 3rd.

The only May trade saw the Braves send C Damon Berryhill and RF Tony Tarasco to Washington for young catching prospect Mike Redmond.

California closer Troy Percival missed most of the month with tendinitis. Padres RF Jose Canseco missed time with an achilles injury. Young Detroit SS Travis Fryman is out till mid June with a broken finger. The Giants and Dodgers both lost their 2B to broken legs, Julio Franco and Lenny Harris are both out till well after the All-Star break. White 2B Ray Durham has a broken arm and will be out till after the break. Milwaukees RF Daryl Hamilton and Cleveland SP Tom Candiotti are both out till late June with injuries as well.

Friday May 31st: Stars (31-21) Vs Giants (25-27)
Cooke was on the hook for 6 runs through 6.1 and left down 6-2. Osvaldo Fernandez and their pen, concluding with Rod Beck, kept us off the board and that's that. Matt Williams was 4-4 with a homer and Steve Scarsone had a 3 run shot for the Giants. Young and Eusebio each had 2 hits.
Final Score: Giants 6 Stars 2

Saturday June 1st: Stars (31-22) Vs Giants (26-27)
Nomo went 7 strong innings but trailed 1-0 against a masterful performance by Bill Swift. We finally scored in the 8th and our pen was awesome as we took it to the 10th and with the bases load Mike Jackson hit Jeromy Burnitz and we get a gigantic win. Eric Young was 3-5.
Final Score: Stars 2 Giants 1 (10 Innings)

Geez Louise. Joey Hamilton has a forearm strain and will miss a month. This may be the straw that breaks our back. Damn. Sean Lawrence gets the call up and will move into the rotation.

Sunday June 2nd: Stars (32-22) Vs Giants (26-28)
We exploded off of John Burkett and Joe Roseli to the tune of 12 runs in the first 6 innings and led 12-1 going to the 7th. Fernandez, Ericks and King would combine to allow 8 Giant runs in the innings but we would settle down and get the win in a game much tighter than it should have been. Eric Young was 4-5, Womack was 3-5 with 2 HR's and 3 RBI. Helton & Burnitz had 2 RBI each. Dave Martinez and Barry Bonds had 3 hits each for them while Bonds and Will Clark had 2 RBI each.
Final Score: Stars 13 Giants 9

Since i'm pretty well invested into this career and will be for the rest of the summer, I figured i'd add another dimension to it by tracking fake managerial movement as I go along.

I've backtracked through the previous two seasons i've played and made a list of managerial hirings and firings. I'll post new moves in my recaps as I go along and keep this page updated as I do.

As the dynasty progresses I welcome any and all input over who should go and who should for the various teams.

Tuesday June 4th: Stars (33-22) At Mets (36-20)
Dettmer pitched a huge game, going 6 innings and giving up just a solo shot to Fred McGriff. Meanwhile we got to Bobby Jones early and often enough. Eric Young was 4-5 with a HR and Spiers had 2 RBI. Big win.
Final Score: Stars 7 Mets 1

Wednesday June 5th: Stars (34-22) At Mets (36-20)
Lawrence went 4.1 and gave up 2 runs, our bullpen would hold them the rest of the way but it didn't matter on this day as Sid Fernandez was dealing and he threw a complete game 4 hit shutout on us to give them the win. Jay Buhner went 3-4.
Final Score: Mets 2 Stars 0

Kevin Young is coming off the DL tomorrow so we'll send Pedro Castellano back down to AAA.

Thursday June 6th: Stars (34-23) At Mets (36-20)
Steve Cooke was dominant. He pitched secen shutout innings and left up 4-0 against Robert Person. Our pen would do the job, including Embree setting em down in order in the ninth to get the save. Helton & Burnitz hit back to back homers.
Final Score: Stars 4 Mets 1

Tomy Womack has a bruised rib and will be unavailable for 2 days.

Grrr. Fernandez went 7 strong innings and left with a 3-2 lead Vs David West. Embree and Abbott would proceed to give up four eighth inning runs and Mitch Williams closed us out. Grrrr. Kruk homered for them while Incaviglia and Manto each had 2 hits. Helton had 2 RBI.
Final Score: Phillies 6 Stars 3

Don Pall comes off the DL today. John Ericks gets sent down to AAA.

Sunday June 9th: Stars (35-25) At Phillies (29-33)
Dettmer went 6.1 and gave up 5 runs although he pitched very well until the seventh. It didn't matter though because Doug Drabek made us look like minor leaguers, hurling a complete game, 3 hit shutout. Van Slyke was 3-4 with a homer and a triple for the Phils as they sweep us.
Final Score: Phillies 6 Stars 0

Monday June 10th: Off Day
Not gonna lie, the next 23 days are mega important. We're 5.5 games behind the Dodgers and we don't have an off day till July 4th so we're gonna have to keep fresh and get back on the winning track and keep this race close.

Tuesday June 11th: Stars (35-26) Vs Reds (24-40)
We jump all over Curt Lyons and back a 6 inning, 3 run performance from Brian Lawrence with 11 runs and 15 hits. Eusebio was 3-5 with 5 RBI and Womack was 4-5 with 2 RBI.
Final Score: Stars 11 Reds 4

Wednesday June 12th: Stars (36-26) Vs Reds (24-41)
Steve Cooke pitched seven shutout innings and we thrashed the Reds pitching for the second straight day in route to another romp. Eusebio, Young, Goodwin and Spiers all had 2 RBI and we had six hitters get multiple hits.
Final Score: Stars 13 Reds 2

Thursday June 13th: Stars (37-26) Vs Reds (24-42)
Nomo fell behind 5-0 but we came roaring back and by the time he left after 6 innings we had a 7-6 lead. We led 9-6 going to the ninth and Pall set em down to pick up the save and get us the sweep in a series in which we scored 33 times in 3 games.
Womack was 4-5 with a homer and 2 RBI. Helton had 3 RBI, he and Burnitz both homered. Felix Jose was 3-4 with 2 HR's for the Reds. Attendance was just over 6,000.
Final Score: Stars 9 Reds 6

Friday June 14th: Stars (38-26) Vs Padres (21-45)
Just a turd of a game. Fernandez gave up 5 runs over 7 innings and Matt Clement carried a 1 hitter into the ninth. Ughh. Steve Sax was 3-5 with 3 RBI and Bip Roberts added 3 hits for the Padres.
Final Score: Padres 6 Stars 1

Saturday June 15th: Stars (38-27) Vs Padres (22-45)
Dettmer was very good, pitching out of trouble all day. He left after six innings with a 2-0 lead against Glenn Dishman. Hope and Hurst would break down in the eighth and allow 3 runs but we came right back with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead. Pall came on and pitched through trouble to get the save and a big win for us as losing two in a row to the Padres would of been hideous. Tramell and Womack were both 2-4 and Hernandez homered.
Final Score: Stars 4 Padres 3

Eric Young has a bruised thumb and will miss tomorrows game.

Sunday June 16th: Stars (39-27) Vs Padres (22-46)
What a dick kick of a game this was. Sean Lawrence threw 7 glowing innings but left tied 2-2 with Willie Adams. The game would go to the 11th inning where Pall would surrender a run and our offense had no answer. We lose 2 of 3 to the Padres. Son of monkeys butthole. Canseco was 3-5 with a HR for them.
Final Score: Padres 3 Stars 2 (11 Innings)

Well how is this for awesome news. C Carlos Hernandez broke his elbow in todays game and is gone till at least mid September. Excellent. Bleh. C Angelo Encarnacion, our minor league emergency catcher, is out for 11 days also so it's no use calling him up. We sign C Steve Decker to a 1 year deal worth $170,000. I didn't want to do it but I don't want to call up Tom Wilson, he's just not ready yet. The good news coming up is that we'll miss Astros ace Daryl Kile, so that's something.

We ink RF David Hulse to a 3 year deal worth $210K per year. His arbitration had kicked in so we were gonna have to pay him at the end of the season anyway. We have a glut of outfielders coming up through the minors but none will be ready by next year I don't think. In any event I love having a fast guy off the bench and David is playing out of his mind this year so I'm happy to make this deal.

Monday June 17th: Stars (39-28) At Astros (35-31)
Steve Cooke pitched 7 strong innings and out dueled Steve Reed, leaving with a 3-2 lead. We would add a run and Hurst and King would pitch a scoreless final two innings to seal the win. Young, Goodwin and Spears each had 2 hits for us. Finley homered for them and Bichette was 3-4 with a homer. Nice win.
Final Score: Stars 4 Astros 2

AAAARGGHHHHHH. After the game, tests revealed Steve Cooke has a mild shoulder seperation and will be out till early August. Sweet Sally. Since Sele is only a week away we'll slot Paul Abbott into Cookes spot for a spot start and call up John Ericks to go into the pen. Yikes.

Tuesday June 18th: Stars (40-28) At Astros (35-32)
Nomo pitched a gem. He threw seven innings of 3 hits ball and left up 2-0 vs Mark Portugal. King, Embree and Pall closed it out for the win. Womack was 2-4 with an RBI.
Final Score: Stars 2 Astros 0

Wednesday June 19th: Stars (41-28) At Astros (35-33)
Alex Fernandez took a 2-0 lead into the 7th but ran out of gas and they got a run. John Hope pitching into trouble in the eighth but got out of it and Pall pitched the ninth to seal it as we get the sweep with 3 great pitching performances.
Final Score: Stars 2 Astros 1

Christ almighty. Eric Young has a strained elbow ligament and will miss 6 days. We make no roster move, we'll just play short. Nomo has shoulder tendinitis and will miss a week. John Hope will make a spot start when Nomos turn comes up and we'll pitch short in the pen for a few days.

We're now just 1.5 games out of first place as the Dodgers have dropped 4 games in a row.

Thursday June 20th: Stars (42-28) Vs Giants (38-33)
Dettme pitched his heart out and left after 6 tied 2-2 with Osvaldo Fernandez. We scored a run in the seventh and our pen got 3 scoreless innings as we win it by a shoestring. Big win. Burnitz was 2-4 with a homer.
Final Score: Stars 3 Giants 2

Friday June 21st: Stars (43-28) Vs Giants (38-34)
Sean Lawrence gave up 5 runs in the first 2 innings but settled in nicely after that and went 7 innings, leaving down 5-3 to Freddy Garcia. Unfortunately, Embree came in and allowed 4 straight hits, the last of which was a Dave Martinez grand slam. That put a wrap on things as our little win streak comes to an end. Martinez had the grand slam, Royce Clayton was 3-5. Eusebio homered for us.
Final Score: Giants 9 Stars 3

These next two days are pretty big as Hope & Abbott make spot starts. We're still 1.5 games out of first place.

Saturday June 22nd: Stars (43-29) Vs Giants (39-34)
Welp. Abbott gave up 5 runs in five innings and Ericks allowed 3 in the sixth as Bill Swift held us pretty much in check for the second straight day. Spiers and Womack each had 2 hits. Matt Williams was 3-5 with a homer and 3 RBI. Mel Hall was 4-4 with 2 RBI. Attendance was nearly 9,000 so that's something.
Final Score: Giants 8 Stars 2

Sunday June 23rd: Stars (43-30) Vs Giants (40-34)
Hope threw 6 solid innings and left tied 2-2 vs John Burkett. In the eighth Embree imploded again. Theys scored 5 times including a Matt Nokes grand slam. Jesus he sucks. Their pen closed it out, huzzah. Nokes had the salami, Clayton was 3-5. Burnitz had a 2 run homer for us.
Final Score: Giants 7 Stars 2

We bring Sele off the DL and he'll start in 2 days. Nomo will be ready to make a start in 5 days. Abbott and Hope go back to the pen. So our rotation is set at Fernandez, Sele, Dettmer, Lawrence & Nomo till Hamilton comes back in 11 days.

Monday June 24th: Stars (43-31) At Cubs (40-34)
We were up 5-2 going into the seventh and I was trying to get an extra inning out of Fernandez but he allowed a 2 run homer to Alex Arias. King came in to finish the inning and we led 5-4 after 7 innings. It was still 5-4 going to the ninth when Pall allowed a leadoff homer to Rick Wilkins. A few batters later Dave Magadan would single in the winning run with 2 outs as we blow a game we should of won. Ugghh. Magadan was 3-5 with 2 RBI, Jose Vizcaino had 2 hits. Goodwin homered for us and Steve Decker had 2 RBI. Just a heart breaker. We're now 4 games out of first and need to start winning some friggin games.
Final Score: Cubs 6 Stars 5

Tuesday June 25th: Stars (43-32) At Cubs (41-34)
Sele went 6 innings in his return and left tied 2-2 with Steve Trachsel. Bill Hurst would give up 5 eighth inning runs and their pen would close it out as we drop our 5th straight game. Oy. Derrick May had 3 RBI & Mark Grace had 2 RBI. Helton was 3-3 with a homer for us.
Final Score: Cubs 7 Stars 2

To say we've struggled with Eric Young out of the lineup would be an understatement. Hopefully his return tomorrow will spark our offense.

Wednesday June 26th: Stars (43-33) At Cubs (42-34)
Dettmer gave up 8 runs and 16 hits in six innings of work. Blech. He left trailing 8-3 vs Dave Swartzbaugh. Their pen would close us out again and we are now officialy reeling. Mark Grace was 5-5, Sammy Sosa was 3-4 with 2 RBI. Dwight Smith, Rick Wilkins and Rey Sanchez all had 2 hits each. Womack was 2-3 for us.
Final Score: Cubs 11 Stars 4

We've gone from being half a game behind the Dodgers to 6 games out thanks to this 6 game losing streak. I can only hope we have a run in us here soon.

Thursday June 27th: Stars (43-34) At Cubs (43-34)
We jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Lawrence then allowed 6 runs on 8 hits in the BOTTOM OF THE FIRST. We would score 4 more times in the top of the 2nd to retake the lead at 8-6. Lawrence would end up going 4.2 and we got out of the fifth up 8-7. With runners on 2nd and 3rd in the bottom of the eighth we bring in Embree to get out Dwight Smith and he promptly allowes a 2 run single. I fucking hate him. He would allow 2 more runs to score. I really fucking hate him. In the top of the ninth we score 4 times off of Steve Trachsel as they'd run out of pitchers. We lead 13-11 going to the bottom of the ninth. A tired King got the first two batters and a tired Hope got the 3rd to give us the win in a wild ass game. Unreal. Womack was 4-5, Eric Young was 3-6 with 2 RBI. Helton was 3-5 with 3 RBI, Decker was 3-5 with 2 RBI. Grace and Timmon each had 3 hits for them, Sosa was 4-5, Smith and Benito Santiago each had 2 RBI. The out hit us 22-19.
Final Score: Stars 13 Cubs 11

I can't take Embree anymore. He's being sent down to AAA and Dennis Moeller is being called up to take his spot. We've a got a big week ahead as we head home to host the Braves for three and then a HUGE series against the Dodgers. These next 6 games could be our season.

Friday June 28th: Stars (44-34) Vs Braves (42-36)
Nomo went five innings and left down 6-0 to Greg Maddux. We needed better from Nomo today. It was 8-3 going to the bottom of the ninth and we would rally to score 4 runs and had runners on 1st and 3rd when Steve Decker grounded out to end the game. Bleh. Spiers was 3-4, Burnitz and Womack had 2 RBI each and Helton was 2-4. Blauser went 3-5, Francisco Cabrera had a homer and 2 RBI and Klesko had 2 RBI. Attendance was 8,300.
Final Score: Braves 8 Stars 7

Saturday June 29th: Stars (44-35) Vs Braves (43-36)
Steve Avery was throwing blanks and Alex Fernandez had given up four runs through seven innings when we finally got to Avery and then Greg McMichael in the bottom of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead into the eighth inning. They would tie it up in the eighth off of a tired King and Hope but we came right back and scored twice off of Kent Mercker in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-5 headed to the ninth. Don Pall would allow a run but hold on to get the save and a big come from behind win for us. Womack was 2-4 with 2 RBI and Spiers added 2 hits. Cabrera, Klesko and Palmeiro all hit solo homers for the Braves.
Final Score: Stars 7 Braves 6

Sunday June 30th: Stars (45-35) Vs Braves (43-37)
We chased rookie Matt Murray with 6 runs in the first four innings. Sele threw a wonderful seven innings of 4 hit, shut out ball. Abbott let in a couple runs but Hurst closed it out and we get a very big final two wins in the series as we welcome the Dodgers to town tomorrow on a bit of a roll. Eric Young was 3-4 with a HR. Spiers had 2 hits and 3 RBI. Palmeiro was 3-4 for the Braves.
Final Score: Stars 7 Braves 2

More good news. Paul Abbott tweaked his hamstring and will be unavailable for the next two days. I guess it's no biggie, he wouldn't have been available tomorrow anyway.

Tony Eusebio has become arbitration eligible so we sit down to try and hammer out a deal. We agree on a 3 year deal worth $330,000 per year. A raise of about $180,000 from what he's making now. I'm not in love with Eusebio but we really have nobody in the minors ready to step up and he's grown into a solid hitter and defender so what the hell.

We're set to host the Dodgers tomorrow as our long streak of games comes to an end with their series. After that we have an off day then we go to Atlanta for 3 games before the All-Star break. We sit 4 games behind the Dodgers as they've just lost 3 one run games in a row at home to the Phillies. I know I keep saying that this game or this series is huge but the later we get into the season the huger they get. The bad news is that we've got Dettmer, Lawrence and Nomo lined up to pitch. Not exactly the most fearsome of aces. We better get some people out to watch this effin series.

Monday July 1st: Stars (46-35) Vs Dodgers (51-32)
Dettmers last pitch of the day came with 2 outs in the fourth inning and it was a grand slam by PEDRO MARTINEZ. He left having given up 9 runs. Oh boy. No comebacks in this one as Pedro went seven strong and Rich DeLucia pitched the final two innings. Helton was 2-3 with a homer. Naehring was 2-3 with 2 RBI for them. Not a good start. Attendance was 11,000. Why should I be happy about that? Fuck this city. For reals.
Final Score: Dodgers 10 Stars 2

Tuesday July 2nd: Stars (46-36) Vs Dodgers (52-32)
Lawrence allowed 4 runs in the first two innings but settled down and went five, giving up 5 runs and leaving down 5-3 to ten game winner Erik Hanson. Bill Hurst would give up a 2 run homer to Eric Davis in the seventh inning to push it to 7-3. We got it to 7-5 and got the tying run in Todd Helton up to the plate in the bottom of the ninth vs their closer Todd Worell but Helton popped up to end the game. Blazes. Spiers was 2-5 with 3 RBI. Boggs, Lance Johnson and Piazza all had 2 hits for them, Piazza homered and Johnson had 2 RBI.
Final Score: Dodgers 7 Stars 5

Wednesday July 3rd: Stars (46-37) Vs Dodgers (53-32)
Nomo allowed 2 first inning runs and it was 2-0 in the bottom of the 4th when we scored six times to chase Orel Hershiser. Nomo would end up going seven innings and leaving with a 10-2 lead thanks to a solo Helton homer and a 3 run blast from Burnitz. Our pen would close it out as we salvage a game in the series and stay within shooting distance of the Dodgers. Young was 3-5, Helton was 3-4 with 2 RBI and A homer, Burnitz had that 3 run homer and Hansen had 2 RBI. Offerman and Karros each had 2 hits for them.
Final Score: Stars 12 Dodgers 4

Thursday July 4th: Off Day
Joey Hamilton will come off the DL tomorrow and start. Sean Lawrence gets sent down to AAA. So our rotation for the Braves series will be Hamilton, Fernandez & Sele.

Friday July 5th: Stars (47-37) At Braves (45-39)
Hamilton worked six innings and gave up 5 runs while Greg Maddux was dealing all day. We trailed 5-0 going into the ninth and we got 3 runs across, 2 of which came on a Jeromy Burnitz homer but that was as close as we'd get as they win the series opener. Womack was 2-4 and Burnitz homered. Klesko homered for the Braves.
Final Score: Braves 5 Stars 3

Saturday July 6th: Stars (47-38) At Braves (46-39)
We built a 5-0 lead early in knocking out Jason Schmidt but Fernandez would give it all back and then some as he left after five down 6-5. We would reclaim the lead with 2 runs in the sixth off of Darrell May. Up 8-7 with 2 outs and the bases loaded in the eighth, Charlie O'Brien would ground to short and Spiers would boot the routine grounder allowing the tieing run to score. Deion Sanders in the next at bat would smash a double to give them a 10-8 lead and Jay Howell would shut us down in the 9th as we lose a friggin nut kick of a game. Burnitz homered, he and Helton each had 2 RBI. Justice went 3-3 with 2 HR and 3 RBI to lead the Braves. Just sickening.
Final Score: Braves 10 Stars 8

Sunday July 7th: Stars (47-39) At Braves (47-39)
Sele didn't make it out of the 5th as he left having given up 5 runs and the bases loaded. Kevin King came in and promptly allowed a Ryan Klesko grand slam. They would ease to victory and pick up the sweep and send us into the break reeling. Just a total domination.
Final Score: Braves 13 Stars 3

So we limp into the break with a 47-40 record, in 4th place and 7 games out.

Let's see, what is there to discuss here. Young is just having an amazing season. Heltons emergence is satisfying. Part of me was worried he might not develop into what I'd hoped he'd be. Obviously Goodwin, Spiers and Womack have regressed from early in the season but I expect them to regain their strokes. Burnitz's power has been something, but 16 homers and 33 RBI is........kind of toothless? Hansen has struggled again, Willie Greene has a job waiting for him. Eusebio and Hulse have been awesome. Not much new here.

There's almost nothing good to be said about the staff. The pen pitched well for a couple weeks at one point there. That's my praise. My lefties have been atrocious. My best pitcher has been Hurst. How's that. Ugghhh. Reynolds and Cooke are both 3 weeks away from returning. My only hope is that our pen settles in when we start the second half. My staff too. Fernandez has at times looked like the pitcher I want him to be but then he goes back to being a blow up machine. Nomo has brilliant moments but then he walks the farm. My hope is that those two are working out their kinks and will some point here become more steady but who the hell knows. Ok i'm done with this.

Financially I can't be any more pleased that we're on projection to come in at less than one million in losses. We appear very safe as far as making it through the year with some cash on hand is concerned. The concern now is how do we turn a profit?

In the minors, all our hitters continue to look good. Nobody is going to be moved as they all appear to be right where they should be right now.

I guess the final question is, if we're within shooting distance, do we make a move? That'll be an interesting scenario and one I hope i'm faced with.

The White Sox have not yet been able to shake the Angels or Mariners who sit 5.5 & 6 games back respectively.

The Dodgers Wade Boggs .387 average leads the majors while Boston 1B Scott Hatteberg leads the AL with a .349 average, maybe their only bright spot. Helton and Young sit 4th and 5th in the NL in hitting.

Matt Williams is on a torching pace, his 28 homers leads the majors while Frank Thomas and Juan Gonzalez pace the AL with 23 homers each. Thomas with 77 and Eric Karros with 75 lead their respective leagues in RBI. Heltons 68 has him 4th in the NL.

Pat Listach of Milwaukee leads baseball with 38 steals. Goodwin leads the NL with 37 and Womack is 3rd with 32.

Tom Glavine and Erik Hanson lead the majors with 12 wins each. Randy Johnson at 131, Curt Schilling at 129 and Mike Mussina at 128 are pacing the strikeout race.

San Fransisco 2B Steve Scarsone missed all of June with a hairline foot fracture.

Reds reliever Rob Dibble had a hamstring injury that sidelined him most of the month.

Philles LF Ron Gant suffered a hip flexor on June 14th that will keep him out most of the season.

Dwight Gooden missed 3 weeks with shoulder inflammation.

The Orioles have been playing without Robin Yount and Cal Ripken for the past 2 weeks and they arn't expected to return till late July.

The Astros lost starting pitcher Mark Portugal for most of July with a strained oblique.

Mets 2B Jeff Kent is out till late July with a hamstring injury.

Bostons Harold Baines broke his ankle and is out till at least early September. That team is snakebit.

The Cubs Sammy Sosa broke his collarbone and will miss all of July.

The Cubs acquired Padres Catcher Benito Santiago for a few minor leaguers and a lot of cash.
The Cubs also picked up 2B Jose Oquendo from the A's for minor leaguers C Chad Moeller and RF Bobby Kielty.

The Yankees fired manager Buck Showalter during the All-Star break, Jim Riggleman was named interim coach.

Friday July 12th: Stars (47-40) At Giants (51-38)
Nono went 6.1 and left with a 3-2 lead. Abbott and Pall would pitch scoreless 8th and 9th innings and we open the second half with a nice win in San Fransisco. Eric Young was 3-5, Spiers was 2-5 with an RBI. Bonds had 2 RBI for the Giants.
Final Score: Stars 3 Giants 2

Saturday July 13th: Stars (48-40) At Giants (51-39)
Joey Hamilton pitched a glorious 8 innings of shutout balls vs Dave Burba and Pall worked the ninth for his 2nd straight save as we take game two of the series. Nice. Burnitz was 2-4 with an RBI and Helton was 2-3.
Final Score: Stars 2 Giants 0

Ugghh, Eusebio tweaked his groin and will miss about 2 weeks so it's to the DL for him. C Angelo Encarnacion get's called up and Steve Decker will now see the bulk of the catching duties for the next two week.

Sunday July 14th: Stars (49-40) At Giants (51-40)
Welp, that stout pitching ended soon enough. Fernandez gave up 8 runs in 2.1 innings. Osvaldo Fernandez and Keith Foulke would combine to shut us down as they salvage a win in the series finale. Helton homered. Matt Williams was 3-5 with 3 RBI. Steve Scarsone was 3-4 with a homer and Royce Clayton went 3-4.
Final Score: Giants 10 Stars 2

Monday July 15th: Stars (49-41) Vs Padres (34-57)
Up 4-1 in the fourth against Glenn Dishman, Sele had a complete meltdown. He allowed 6 runs and didn't make it out of the inning. We fought back and got it to 11-9 but they're 21 hits out did our 15 and they take the series opener. DAMNIT MAN! I'm so pissed at this team. We had to use Dettmer in relief in the 9th so we'll have to call up a starter tomorrow to take his spot. Just a shitty couple of games man. Bip Roberts was 4-6, Stan Javier was 3-6 with a homer, Sheffield and Slaught each had 3 hits. Womack had 4 hits for us while Eric Young was 3-5 with 4 RBI. Attendance was a stout 5,300. Fuck this town.
Final Score: Padres 11 Stars 9

We send down Craig Counsell for the day and call up Ryan Rupe to make his major league debut in a spot start.

Tuesday July 16th: Stars (49-42) Vs Padres (35-57)
A nice bounce back day as Ryan Rupe pitched 8 innings of 1 run ball and we got to Matt Morris and then their pen and romped rather easily. Womack was 3-5 with 3 SB, Burnitz had 3 hits including a homer and 2 RBI. Young and Goodwin had 2 hits each.
Final Score: Stars 8 Padres 1

We send Rupe down, but promote him to AA. Counsell gets called back up.

Wednesday July 17th: Stars (50-42) Vs Padres (35-58)
Nomo went 7 strong but left down 2-1. We would tie it in the eighth and win it in the ninth on an Eric Young RBI single. Huge comeback win as this would of been a killer to lose. Goodwin had 2 hits and Womack and Burnitz had RBI's.
Final Score: Stars 3 Padres 2

Thursday July 18th: Off Day
We're gonna start Dettmer tomorrow and give everyone an extra day of rest since he missed his last turn.

Friday July 19th: Stars (51-42) Vs Astros (42-51)
John Dettmer went 5 unimpressive innings and left down 5-1. We got it to 5-3 in the ninth but Billy Wagner closed it out as drop the opener. Yuck. Brian Jordan homered and Womack had 2 hits. Bichette was 3-4 with a homer and Orlando Miller went 3-5.
Final Score: Astros 5 Stars 3

Tom Goodwin has a sore hamstring and will miss 3 days. We're not going to make any roster moves, we'll just play a man short for the rest of the weekend.

Saturday July 20th: Stars (51-43) Vs Astros (43-51)
We were tied 1-1 going to the eighth when Hamilton put the first two runners on. King would allow one of them to score. Taubansee would then homer off of Pall in the ninth and Billy Wagner would set us down in the bottom of the inning as they take another one from us. Bleh to the max. Steve Finley was 3-4 with a homer for them.
Final Score: Astros 3 Stars 1

Sunday July 21st: Stars (51-44) Vs Astros (44-51)
Sele gave up 4 runs in 6.1 innings and Daryl Kile held us to 2 hits and 1 run in throwing a complete game as we looked and played like a steam poodle turd. This shit needs shaking up.
Final Score: Astros 5 Stars 1

Monday July 22nd: Off Day
It's time to shake this thing up. We're 7.5 games back with a 3 game series against the Dodgers coming up over the weekend, it's pretty much our last stand so we're gonna make some changes. We call up 3B Willie Greene and send down 3B Dave Hansen to AAA. Tony Womack will move up to the 2 spot, Helton will hit 3rd, Greene becomes our cleanup hitter, Burnitz will hit 5th, Goodwin will hit 6th, Spiers will hit 7th and whoever is catching will hit 8th. This gives Helton more of a chance to be a run producer but it's all predicated on Greene being able to be a power threat. I hope he's up for the challenge.

The Dodgers picked up veteran 2B Mike Bordick from the A's in exchange for a minor league pitcher.

Tuesday July 23rd: Stars (51-45) At Padres (35-62)
Alex Fernandez pitched 8 innings of one run ball and we took a 3-1 lead to the ninth. Pall would give up a solo homer to Phil Plantier but that was all as he picked up the save and we get off the snide. Willie Greene homered in his 2nd at bat and Womack added an RBI.
Final Score: Stars 3 Padres 2

Wednesday July 24th: Stars (52-45) At Padres (35-63)
Nomo took a 5-1 lead into the 6th and he, King and Hurst proceeded to allow them to score 5 times and take a 6-5 lead. Gursh. We would tie it in the top of the 7th and Moeller would give up 3 runs in the bottom of the inning. For the love of Jodie Foster! We would score 4 times in the top of the ninth to tie it only for Pall to come on and give up a single, stolen base and game winning single. I'm pulling the hair on my nuts out right about now. Goodwin and Encarnacion each had 3 hits and 2 RBI. Stan Javier was 3-4 and Don Slaught was 3-6 with 3 RBI for the Padres.
Final Score: Padres 11 Stars 10

Thursday July 25th: Stars (52-46) At Padres (36-63)
Dettmer went 8.1 and Hurst got the final 2 outs as we roll to a 7-4 win in the series finale. Decker, Greene and Helton all had 2 RBI. We head home for a critical series against the reeling Dodgers who have lost 5 in a row and lead the Giants by just 1.5 games and us and the Braves by 5.5 games as the West is getting tight.
Final Score: Stars 7 Padres 4

This Dodgers series coming up is huge for us obviously, but even more so because they are nursing some injuries. Erik Hanson has a blister and Ramon Martinez has bursitis in his shoulder and we will be facing 2 rookies making their major league debuts.

Friday July 26th: Stars (53-46) Vs Dodgers (60-42)
Hamilton gave up 4 runs in five innings and left down 4-0 against Pedro Martinez. Not the kind of start we needed from him.
We got it to 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth with Hulse on 3rd and Womack on 2nd and Eric Young ripped a single to center field off of Omar Daal to score them both and give us a HUGE come from behind win. Our pen was excellent and we showed some friggin heart! Womack had 3 RBI, Helton homered. Just a monsterous win.
Final Score: Stars 6 Dodgers 5

Tomorrow we get a bit lucky as we face a young man named Mike Farmer, who is replacing Orel Hershiser in their rotation and is making his first major league start. Hershiser is out with a bruised knee.

The Braves have acquired veteran Kenny Rogers from the Rangers in exchange for pitching prospects Kenshin Kawakami and Chris Seelbach.

Saturday July 27th: Stars (54-46) Vs Dodgers (60-43)
We jumped out to a 4-1 lead but Sele would give it all back and leave after 6 innings with us down 5-4. Bill Hurst would allow a 3 run homer to Eric Karros in the 7th to break it open. Their pen would close it out. We should have had this game. Damnit. Jordan and Encarnacion had 2 hits each. Lance Johnson and Eric Davis each had 4 hits and Davis and Karros homered.
Final Score: Dodgers 8 Stars 4

Tomorrows starter is Rick Gorecki, a 21 year old making his major league debut. It is, in no uncertain terms, a must win game.

Sunday July 28th: Stars (54-47) Vs Dodgers (61-43)
We fell behind 3-0 but in the 4th inning we broke through for 5 runs and chased the rookie pitcher. Fernandez would go 7 innings and leave with a 6-4 lead. Pall would close it out in the ninth as we take 2 of 3 and stay in the race. Womack homered, Greene had 3 RBI and Burnitz and Decker had 2 hits each. Piazza homered for them and Lance Johnson had 2 hits.
Final Score: Stars 7 Dodgers 4

Monday July 29th: Off Day
We stand 5.5 games out of 1st place as the Giants have won 10 in a row and moved into 1st. The Dodgers are a game back. Eusebio is ready to come off of the DL. Encarnacion gets sent back down to AAA. With the off day we're going to be skipping Dettmers turn in the rotation as everyone can still work on 5 days rest. By the time we get back around Cooke & Reynolds will be ready to go. We have 6 games with the lowly Reds sandwiched with a 3 game series in San Fransisco. Obviously these next 9 days are gigantic.

Tuesday July 30th: Stars (55-47) At Reds (39-65)
We jumped out to a 5-0 lead off of John Thomson and Nomo would go six and leave up 6-4. We added a run and our pen closed them out to get the win in the opener. Helton had 3 RBI and Greene and Womack had 2 hits each. Juan Samuel went 3-5 for the Reds.
Final Score: Stars 7 Reds 4

Wednesday July 31st: Stars (56-47) At Reds (39-66)
Hamilton went 6.1 scoreless innings and we led 3-0 after seven. Hurst, Moeller and Hope would close it out as we take another one and push back to 10 games over .500. Spiers was 3-4 with an RBI.
Final Score: Stars 4 Reds 0

We tried pretty hard to find a reliever we could deal for but nothing was working out, we arn't gonna overpay and we would have had to do exactly that.

The Cubs sent RP Chuck McElroy & SS Rey Sanchez to Oakland for SP Pete Harnisch and SP Kevin Foster in the only last minute deal.

Thursday August 1st: Stars (55-47) At Reds (39-65)
Sele threw 8 shut out innings and we rolled to victory to complete the sweep. Goodwin was 2-4 with a homer, Greene was 3-5 with a homer and Trammell went 3-4.
Final Score: Stars 7 Reds 1

Friday August 2nd: (Stars 58-47) At Giants (64-43)
Well now. Alex Fernandez threw a complete game, 1 hit shut out and struck out 10 as we rolled to an easy victory over John Burkett and broke their 12 game winning streak. Womack and Helton were both 3-5 and Helton added a homer and 2 RBI.
Final Score: Stars 7 Giants 0

Steve Cooke is ready to come off of the DL. He'll start tomorrow and Dettmer gets sent down to AAA.

Saturday August 3rd: (Stars 59-47) At Giants (64-44)
Cooke gave up 4 runs over 6 innings but then Moeller would give up 4 in the 7th as they broke it wide open. NL ERA leader Osvaldo Fernadez had his way with us all day as they romped. Dave Martinez was 3-5, Royce Clayton had 2 RBI and Matt Williams and Will Clark homered. Eric Young hit a homer for us.
Final Score: Giants 10 Stars 1

Bill Hurst has a sore rotator cuff that will keep him out of action for a week. We decide to DL him and bring up Alan Embree.

Sunday August 4th: (Stars 59-48) At Giants (65-44)
Nomo and Freddy Garcia both pitched great games. Nomo went into the ninth and was lifted after a leadoff single. Embree had runners at 2nd & 3rd with one out and got of it and we went to extra innings tied at 2-2. We would push a run across in the top of the 10th on a Hulse RBI ground out and then Pall would get the save despite some trouble and we get out of town with 2 out 3. Very nice. Eric Young was 2-5 with a homer.
Final Score: Stars 3 Giants 2 (10 Innings)

Monday August 5th: Stars (60-48) Vs Reds (41-68)
Hamilton went 7.1 and left with a 4-2 lead vs Curt Lyons. It stayed that way till the ninth when Pall pitched 1-2-3 inning and we win game one. Eric Young and Willie Greene each had 2 hits.
Final Score: Stars 4 Reds 2

Tuesday August 6th: Stars (60-48) Vs Reds (41-68)
Sele went 7 strong and left up 5-2. Abbott and Moeller closed it out and we take the 2nd game of the series. Womack was 2-3 and Helton went 2-4 with 2 RBI.
Final Score: Stars 5 Reds 2

Shane Reynolds will come off the DL tomorrow and start, everyone will get an extra day of rest. We send Moeller down to AAA and we're gonna try Sele out of the pen and as a spot starter during the stretch run to try and keep our pitchers fresh.

We're now just 2.5 games out of 1st but still behind both the Giants and Dodgers.

Wednesday August 7th: Stars (62-48) Vs Reds (41-70)
Shane Reynolds took a 5-0 lead into the 6th inning before giving up a grand slam to Kevin Mitchell. Paul Abbott would give up another run and it was 5-5 going to the bottom of the sixth where we would retake the lead with 2 runs. It was 8-5 in the ninth when Don Pall came in and set them down to get the save. Sometimes the biggest wins are the ones you don't let slip away. Willie Greene was 2-4 with a homer, Eric Young had 2 RBI, Spiers was 3-3. Barry Larkin and Jeff Branson each had 3 hits for the Reds.
Final Score: Stars 8 Reds 5

Thursday August 8th: Off Day
So here;s the deal. We stand 1.5 games behind both the Giants and Dodgers who are tied for 1st place. We have exactly 1 off day the rest of season. That comes on August 26th. Sele will pitch out of the pen till rosters are expanded, at which point we'll work him into the rotation when need be to rest our starters and give them an extra day here and there.

I never imagined I'd be in this position but the team is really coming together right now. I feel like we've weathered the worst of the storm and now we're playing with house money. I don't know if our pitching can get it done but by gosh were gonna do our best to win this son of a bitch.

Friday August 9th: Stars (63-48) At Braves (57-54)
Alex Fernandez gave up just 2 hits and 1 run through 5 innings but had to leave after throwing a ton of pitches. We trailed David Cone 1-0 at that point. Cone would go on to keep us at bay, holding us to a Helton homer while they added 2 more runs and our win streak comes to a halt. Womack was 2-4 and Helton homered.
Final Score: Braves 3 Stars 1

Saturday August 10th: Stars (63-49) At Braves (58-54)
Ughh. We had the lead 4 different times and couldn't hold it even once. Cooke went 6 innings giving up 5 runs and left up 6-5 but they would have it tied going to the bottom of the ninth when Ryan Klesko hit a bomb off of Embree to give them the win for the second straight day. Goodwin had 3 hits and scored 3 times. Eric Young, Helton and Trammell had 2 hits each. Blauser was 3-5 with a HR and Klesko and Cabrera each had 3 hits for the Braves. Yuck.
Final Score: Braves 8 Stars 7

Sunday August 11th: Stars (63-50) At Braves (59-54)
Nomo only went 5 innings but left with a 2-1 lead vs Tom Glavine. We would add a run and King, Hope and Pall would throw a scoreless final four frames to avoid the sweep and get us out of town with a win. Spiers was 3-4 with an RBI.
Final Score: Stars 3 Braves 1

Shane Reynolds has a bruised sternum and will need some extra rest so Sele will start in his place in two days.

Monday August 12th: Stars (64-50) Vs Senators (36-80)
Joey Hamilton threw 8 scoreless innings and Paul Abbott closed up shop as we rolled to victory over what is, to be quite frank, a horrid Senators team. Goodwin was 3-4, Young and Helton each had 2 hits. Attendance was a staunch 5,000.
Final Score: Stars 5 Senators 1

Tuesday August 13th: Stars (65-50) Vs Senators (36-81)
I guess I shouldn't have opened my big mouth. Sele pitched like dookie and left after 5 innings down 7-0 to the mighty Rick Helling. We got it to 7-5 but Matt Mantei shut us down in the ninth. Oooofah. Womack was 3-5, Helton homered and Greene had 2 RBI. Charles Johnson and Scott Livingstone each had 2 RBI for the Senators.
Final Score: Senators 7 Stars 5

Wednesday August 14th: Stars (65-51) Vs Senators (37-81)
Alex Fernandez wasn't stellar but he was good enough, going 8 innings and giving up 4 runs and we just bombed them, cranking out 20 hits and 13 runs. Burnitz was 4-4, Eusebio was 4-5 with 3 RBI, Spiers, Womack, Goodwin and Counsell each had 2 RBI and Goodwin homered. Charles Johnson homered and had 3 RBI for the Senators. Wow, our attendance actually went down below 5,000. I gotta get out of this place, if it's the last thing I ever do.
Final Score: Stars 13 Senators 5

Thursday August 15th: Stars (66-51) Vs Senators (37-82)
Cooke went 6.2 and left with a 6-2 lead. Embree and King would give up 3 runs in the eighth to make it 6-5. They would get runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs in the ninth but Pall would get the final out as we take 3 of 4 from the Senators. Nice win. Young, Helton and Eusebio all had 2 hits.
Final Score: Stars 6 Senators 5

After taking 3 of 4 from the Senators we sit 2 games behind both the Giants and Dodgers who are tied for first place.

Reynolds is ready to pitch so he'll go tomorrow and everyone will move back a day.

Tests revealed a hairline fracture in Steve Deckers wrist and he'll be out about 3 weeks. We DL him and recall C Angelo Encarnacion.

Friday August 16th: Stars (67-51) Vs Pirates (57-61)
Reynolds went 6 innings and gave up 5 runs but it was more than enough as we beat the hell out of Tim Wakefield and led 10-5 after 6 innings. We would keep pouring it on and blow them out for the victory. Willie Greene had a day for the ages. He went 4-5 with 3 HR's and 7 RBI. Spiers had 4 hits and scored 3 times while Eusebio had a homer 4 RBI. Helton added a 2-4, 3 run, 2 RBI day. Alex Cole, Jay Bell and Mike Kingery each had 3 hits for the Pirates. Leo Gomez homered.
Final Score: Stars 16 Pirates 9

Saturday August 17th: Stars (68-51) Vs Pirates (57-62)
Nomo left after six innings with a 4-3 lead. We would add an insurance run and Pall would pitch a 1-2-3 ninth for the save. Helton was 3-3, Burnitz had 3 RBI and Jordan homered.
Final Score: Stars 5 Pirates 3

Sunday August 18th: Stars (69-51) Vs Pirates (57-63)
Hamilton went 7 innings and left with a 4-3 lead. It would stay that way till the ninth and Pall would pick up his 2nd consecutive save as we wrap up the sweep. Burnitz walked 5 times, Encarnacion had 2 RBI and Goodwin, Greene and Jordan each had 2 hits.
Final Score: Stars 4 Pirates 3

We're 2 games behind the Dodgers and 1 game behind the Giants in the NL West race as we head out on the road for a big couple of series. We have 4 games in St. Louis and 3 games in Los Angeles. It'll be the last time we face either the Dodgers or Giants on the season.

Monday August 19th: Stars (70-51) At Cardinals (70-53)
Alex Fernandez gave up 6 runs in five innings and Joe Magrane stifled our bats all day as the Cardinals take the series opener without much sweat. Eric Young and Encarnacion had 3 hits each for us. Mabry and Zaun had 2 RBI each for the Cardinals.
Final Score: Cardinals 7 Stars 2

Tuesday August 20th: Stars (70-52) At Cardinals (71-53)
Steve Cooke pitched a brilliant seven innings and left with a 3-1 lead against Bob Tewksbury. It was 4-1 in the ninth when Pall set em down in order to pick up the save and even up the series. Kevin Young homered and Eric Young had 2 steals.
Final Score: Stars 4 Cardinals 1

Wednesday August 21st: Stars (71-52) At Cardinals (71-54)
Reynolds would pitch seven strong innings and leave tied 1-1 with Tim Belcher. It stayed that way till we scored 3 times in the top of the ninth off of Rheal Cormier on a sac fly from Encarnacion and a 2 run triple from Eric Young. Pall would pitch into some trouble in the bottom of the inning but he got out of it and we wrap up the win. Young had 2 RBI, Spiers had 2 hits. RF Daryl Whitmore was 2-3 with an RBI for the Cardinals.
Final Score: Stars 4 Cardinals 2

3B Kevin Young has become arbitration eligable and we want to resign him. We work out a 3 year deal worth $220,000 per year.

SP Shane Reynolds has also become arbitration eligible but he wants close to $600,000 per year and i'm not sure he's worth that. I beleive we can get him for closer to $400,000 next year if it goes to arbitration so we table talks with him for now.

We're now 20 games over .500

Thursday August 22nd: Stars (72-52) At Cardinals (71-55)
Jeebus. Nomo got knocked around to the tune of 11 runs in 2.1 innings. Thank heaven we had Sele in the pen to keep us from wearing out or bullpen. I don't even know where to begin. Greg Jeffries was with a homer and 6 RBI, Ray Lankford had 3 RBI and Gallaraga, Lankford, Gilkey and Zaun each had 2 hits.
Final Score: Cardinals 12 Stars 1

After the game we send Sele down to AAA just for the weekend and call up John Ericks to give us a fresh arm in the bullpen.

We head to Los Angeles for this big series with the Dodgers. We're 3 games behind the Giants and 2 behind the Dodgers.

Friday August 23rd: Stars (72-53) At Dodgers (75-52)
We jumped on Erik Hanson for 3 first inning runs and it was all uphill from there. Helton had a 3 run homer, Burnitz was 4-5 with a homer and 5 RBI, Young stole 2 bases and scored twice, Womack had 2 hits a steal and 2 runs scored and Spiers homered. Hamilton went 6.1 and our pen was solid. Nice win here in the opener.
Final Score: Stars 10 Dodgers 1

Saturday August 24th: Stars (73-53) At Dodgers (75-53)
Fernandez was on his way to a 1-2-3 first when Greene & Spiers committed errors and the flood gates opened. Eric Davis popped a grand slam and Fernandez would go on to allow 8 runs in five innings. They piled it on our bullpen en route to a revenge route and setting up a critical 3rd game in the series. Lance Johnson was 3-5 with 3 RBI, Eric Davis was 3-5 with 2 HR's and 6 RBI. Piazza added 3 hits.
Final Score: Dodgers 17 Stars 4

Well this is no good. John Hope has a sprained knee ligament and will miss close to a month. Ooofah. We DL him and call up Aaron Sele.

Next Kevin King will miss a week with a sprained ankle. We can't hold a roster spot for him so we DL him and recall Dennis Moeller. This bullpen just got interesting.

Sunday August 25th: Stars (72-53) At Dodgers (75-52)
What a wild conclusion to this series. We jumped on Ramon Martinez for 4 second inning runs but Cooke gave up 4 in the bottom of the third and they led 6-4 going to the 5th inning when we poured on 6 more runs and took a 10-6 lead. It was 12-9 in the ninth when Pall came on and got the save to wrap it up and get us out of town with 2 out of 3 in the series. Euesebio, Spiers and Cooke combined for 8 RBI. Helton and Goodwin each had 3 hits. Karros had 3 RBI for the Dodgers and Johnson & Offerman combined for 5 hits.
Final Score: Stars 12 Dodgers 9

Monday August 26th: Off Day
We stand 2 games behind the Giants and half a game behind the Dodgers as we embark on 34 straight games to end the season. Obviously September call ups are gonna be a god send to us. We have a legit chance to win this division, now it's time to go out there and grab that brass ring.

Tuesday August 27th: Stars (74-54) At Senators (40-90)
Reynolds gave up 5 runs in five innings and left down 5-0. Ericks would allow a 3 run homer to Charles Johnson to help them put it away and Pedro Astacio gave us fits all day as we lose a real stomach punch of a game. We just sucked today.
Final Score: Senators 8 Stars 2

Wednesday August 28th: Stars (74-55) At Senators (41-90)
Nomo struggled through 4.1 and Moeller would allow 2 inherited runners to score and we trailed 6-4 at the end of five innings. We would tie it in the 8th off of Doug Jones and it would go extra innings. They would score off of Pall in the bottom of the 10th on a run scoring drag bunt by Tom Foley and send us to our 2nd straight loss vs the worst team in the league. Just a frigging embarrassing display by us. I have no mother effin words.
Final Score: Senators 7 Stars 6 (10 Innings)

More great news. Pall will miss 3 days and Moeller will miss 2 days. We need to add a pitcher so we'll call up RP Chris Bushing and send down Craig Counsell for a couple of days. Christ almighty.

Thursday August 29th: Stars (74-56) At Senators (42-90)
Hamilton went seven good innings and left with a 6-3 lead. Embree would get a six out save as we salvage a game. Burnitez was 2-3 with a homer and Eric Young had 2 RBI. Damon Berryhill homered for the Senators.
Final Score: Stars 6 Senators 3

Yay, Tony Womack has a sore heel and will miss 5 days. We'll just have to grit it out without making any roster moves.

We're now tied with the Dodgers, 3 games behind the Giants.

Friday August 30th: Stars (75-56) Vs Phillies (68-64)
Fernandez would give up four runs in the first two innings. He'd settle down and go seven but he'd leave down 4-2 to Curt Schilling. We couldn't do anything against their pen and we drop the opener and have lost 3 of 4 to really go on the ropes. Eric Young, Goodwin and Burnitz all had 2 hits. Gwynn had a 2 run homer for them.
Final Score: Phillies 4 Stars 2

Saturday August 31st: Stars (75-57) Vs Phillies (69-64)
Cooke went 7.1 innings and left with a 8-2 lead against Doug Drabek. Ericks and Moeller closed it out and we get the win. Goodwin had 4 RBI and Spiers had 2 RBI. Very important game tomorrow.
Final Score: Stars 8 Phillies 3

With expanded rosters for September we call up C Tom Wilson, 2B Dave Berg, 3B Dave Hansen, CF Jesus Tavarez, 1B Pedro Catellano, 1B Mike Busch, 3B Scott Sheldon and C Steve Decker gets activated from the DL as does C Carlos Hernandez even though he'll still be out about 2 weeks. Starting Pitchers Sean Lawrence & John Dettmer get the call as do relievers Chris Bushing, Mo Sanford, Bill Hurst & Rich Loiselle.

In the minors, Tejada, Matsui and Drew will all get a month in AAA while Tatis, Podsednik, Carlos Lee and Juan Encarnacion will get a month of AA experience.

Sunday September 1st: Stars (76-57) Vs Phillies (69-65)
Reynolds would give up four runs in the second inning but we would come roaring back against Andy Ashby and by the time Reynolds was done after six innings we held a 10-5 lead. Sean Lawrence would pitch the final 3 innings as we take the final two games of series in impressive fashion. Burnitz, Hansen and Jordan all homered. Kevin Young & Jordan had 2 RBI. Goodwin had 3 hits and Spiers and Eusebio had 2 hits each. Dykstra was 3-4 and John Zuber was 3-4 with a homer for the Phillies.
Final Score: Stars 11 Phillies 5

For the love of Pete. Eusebio has a sprained finger and will be sidelined about 17 days. Monkey balls!!

We now stand just 1 game behind the Giants and 1 game ahead of the Dodgers as we prepare to welcome the Cardinals to town for a four game series.

Aaron Sele will get the start tomorrow and everyone will get an extra day of rest.

The Montreal Expos have opened an 8 game lead in the NL East, all but assuring them their first division crown in team history. In the AL East the Orioles have a 4.5 game lead on the Indians whom they just can't seem to shake. Out in the AL West the White Sox have distanced themselves from Seattle and California as they hold 9.5 and 12 game leads and look in route to their 4th straight division crown.
