Gentlemen Start Your Engines, Lock and Load (Interactive Car Wars)

The Sprint cup Dynasty and seeing some of the wrecks on the video brought this game to mind. So I knocked the dust off of some old books, bought some PDF's and I am looking to get an interactive session going here.

I am away from everything right now at work, but I will post rules, character creation and car creation needs. As well as a good solid Storyline to get this going....

So anyone that wants to play and is willing to check in here once or twice a week is more than welcome.

Car Wars is the game of the freeways of the future – where the right of way goes to the biggest guns. Choose your vehicle – complete with weapons, armor, power plant, suspension, and body style. Then take it out on the road. You'll come home an “ace” – or you'll crash and burn. If you survive, your abilities will improve, and you can accumulate money to buy bigger and better cars

Chronology

Car Wars is set 50 years in the future. The “now” of the Car Wars world moves ahead as the real world does.

2012: Federal government moves to nationalize dwindling supplies of oil and natural gas production. Legislatures in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana react by seceding, and move to nationalize these resources themselves. Pitched battles with federal forces follow, resulting in the destruction of several oilfield sites on both sides of the newly-established border.

2015: U.S. forces stopped in the hills of central Texas, ending bloody “Gulf or Bust” campaign. Rebel forces begin to retake lost territory.

2016: Texarkana Accords are signed, ending the Second Civil War. Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana become three separate sovereign nations, referred to as the Free Oil States.

2027: Grain blight breaks out in Nebraska, spreading rapidly to neighboring areas. A simultaneous blight takes root in the Ukraine. Accusations fly, charging deliberate biological war, followed by nuclear warheads. To everyone’s surprise, satellite defenses stop most of the missiles. Meanwhile, the world’s stock of grains, excluding barley and sesame, has been devastated.
Severe food shortages spring up across the globe. The U.S. is in better short-term shape than most, since the blight apparently has no effect on foods with preservatives in them.

2031: The Food Riots. “Fortress” towns develop. National government fails to keep order throughout much of the U.S.

2033: Gangs rule most of the U.S. outside of the fortress towns. Country real estate becomes worthless; algae farms make up lost food production.

2035: Many large cities totally abandoned. National government regains authority but enforcement decentralized. Economy weak but stable, with food rationed and unemployment at 37%.

2037: Supreme Court decision decriminalizes manslaughter in arena games. “Death sports” become popular. Television becomes nation’s number-two industry, just after food production.

2038: “Crazy Joe” Harshman wins Fresno destruction derby by mounting a surplus .50-caliber machine gun in his Chevy. Term “autoduelling” first used by sportswriters.

2039: Armadillo Autoduel Arena opens on site of former shopping mall in Austin, Texas.

2040: Autoduelling becomes most popular TV sport, edging out combat football and private wars. Eight more autoduel arenas open in North America. The American Autoduel Association (AADA) is formed.

2041: Utah autoduellists form vigilante group to counter Badlands cycle gangs. AADA holds first sanctioned “National Championship” in Austin, Texas. AADA also begins issuing area advisories and helping duellists organize against cycle gangs and other hazards, upsetting local police forces.

2042: Police admit inability to deal with duellist-armed vehicles in highway use. Informal duels increase in numbers.

2043: Many localities legalize vehicular weaponry of a “defensive
nature” – very loosely defined. Duelling outside city limits
now legal in 14 states and tolerated in most others.

2044: A variety of weapons becomes available as “factory options” on all U.S. makes of cars and several imports.

2045: Statistics show “smash-and-grab” cycle and car gangs much reduced. Rural real estate begins to rise in value. Law enforcement officials credit vehicular weaponry of private citizens, but most point out that “The gangs that are left arenow better armed than we are . . .” Autoduelling now legal in
39 states, as well as the Free Oil States.

2048: Autoduel Quarterly, “The Journal of the American Autoduel Association,” is first published. Autoduelling now legal in all 47 states in the U.S., as well as Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, most Canadian provinces, the Republic of Quebec, Australia and Mexico.

2051: Gas-powered racing and duelling events begin to grow in popularity.

2054: People living on the coasts begin to arm and armor their boats. Piracy rises dramatically but drops again by the end of the year as more and more boats have “defensive” modifications added.

2055: AADA recognizes boats and other watercraft events.

2057: As jaded autoduelling fans grow tired of seeing the same old cars and motorcycles blow each other away in the arenas of the world, they start to look for new thrills. Any vehicle that can be armed – aquabikes, hovercraft, hang gliders, dirigibles and more – begins to compete for the entertainment dollar.

2059: War between the US and the Japanese Protectorate. Oil States remain neutral. US government issues blanket letter of marque; many AADA members become “freelance soldiers.” Massive insurgency backed by Texan and Japanese forces, combined with undisciplined citizen action against suspected targets and general looting, causes massive destruction in US.

2060: Protectorate forces in US go underground, attacking economic
and political targets. AADA and EDSEL volunteers perform
heroically as anti-terrorist patrols. Japan suffers badly from
bombing and orbital beam attacks.

2061: Peace accords signed. Analysts estimate the U.S. and Japanese rebuilding efforts have been set back by 10 to 15 years, with smaller but significant damage to the Oil States economies. Many once-clear roads are again owned by gangs.

Hey all, I just got home from a fun filled day with my kids.

I will try and work on the rules and how we will proceed tonight / tomorrow AM.

We do have 10 racers and I think this will be chaotic and a blast.

Alright, I am plugging everyone's vehicles and characters into an excel spreadsheet so I can keep track of stuff. I am also looking for some city maps that I can use for this.

I have an idea based on where the bulk of the characters are from for what we are doing..

As for turns, how does everyone feel about 2 turns a week? More or Less?

Since I am an authority on teh subject matter, that subject being "I'm fucking clueless" I'll go with whatever you suggest since any input I have would be too horribly stupid to be followed.

2 turns per week should be fine. What days of the week were you thinking of having orders due?

I'm probably WAY too late, and if so, you can tell me to take a hike. But I've just sent you a PM and I'd like to ease my fenders into the competition.

ECADA Announced

That's right dueling fans, a new league has popped up and it is taking place in the eastern states. The East Coast Auto Dueling Association will see some high end dueling ranging from Portland, Boston, New York , Newark, Buffalo, Hartford, Erie and currently negotiations are taking place to bring up tracks this season within Burlington, D.C and Providence. Depending on how the dueling goes this season we will see some expansion into Cleveland, Pittsburgh and other areas. Our drivers will be running as a one man team initially in compact cars with full armor and their selection of weapons. The ECADA sponsors of Death Gear Clothing and Slipstream Power Drinks have provided everyone with their initial build outs.

Our duelers are not known but are dedicated to bringing the best show possible to their growing fan base. Let's meet our group of 12!

David Ginsberg
- Stamford, CT: David hails from Stamford, CT and is an ace behind the wheel. His skill set is built around a road course as he can manuever and get to where he needs. His compact will be equipped out of the gates with a Blast Cannon mounted on top.

Crim Bryant - Tuscaloosa, AL: Crim is being labeled as the "Golden Boy" of the ECADA group. His southern heritage should make him a natural for driving, but he has just been able to squueze by in the past through some dicey situations. His build out will contain a Spike Gun on the rear, a front mounted Machine Guns a nd a driver side flame thrower.

Nate Thunder - Boston, MA: One of the local boys. Nate has been in dueling for a while and has ran some amateur nights. The fact he is still here shows he has some skill. His fan base is quirky. His compact carries a vulcan that is turret mounted on top and a rear flame thrower.

Korbin Deckard - Buffalo, NY: Another local for the dueling association. Korbin is one of the top drivers in the association and is a demon behind the wheel. His car is equipped with two front facing vulcan machine guns.

David Gonzalez - San Francisco, CA: David is known in the circles as "The Bomber". He has a penchant for explosions and things that go boom. This translates into his car as he has a right mounted machine gun, top mounted grenade launcher and a front mounted missile.

Fox McCloud - Minneapolis, MN: Fox was a genetic experiment gone wrong. He is part fox part human. Like his genetic animal he is a sneaky driver on the track and has a penchant for suddenly appearing in your rear view mirror. His compact car is equipped with a Gauss Gun on top, a Machine Gun in the rear and a Medium Rocket on the right side.

"Joe Cool" King - Chicago, IL: In his early 50's, "Joe Cool" King is a grizzled old truck-driver, a veteran of several convoy attacks during the "bad old days" of the 2030's. After many years and harrowing runs, he eventually earned enough for his own rig and enjoyed the freedom that came with it. Sadly, his pride and joy was demolished during the war of 2059 during a run from Denver to Chicago. His car he has named "Woodstock" has 2 vulcan mounted machine guns, one in a turret on top and one in the front.

Ace Idol - Chilton, England: Our foreign born dueler who has the ladies swooning over him. it's a good thing for him it doesn't matter which side of the road he drives on. He has managed to get a Gauss Gun mounted in the front of his car and a Spike gun in the rear.

Stephen Plowher - San Fernando, CA: Your typical California gutter boy. Stephen was born poor, remains poor but has always been the "driver" for questionable activities. This has made him into a star for the seedy underbelly in the area. He has the grit and determination to succeed at dueling. He has a Grenade Launcher mounted on top with a turret. A machine gun mounted on the front and a flame thrower mounted on the rear.

Rob Nielsen - Palm Springs, CA: Meet Rob, another California boy. "Silver Spoon" Nielsen comes from the Palm Springs area. Money isn't necessarily an issue for him as his trust fund is still there for him. It's the fact he can't use the money towards anything deemed "dangerous" to his personage. His car is equipped with 3 Micro Missiles mounted on the front and a top mounted Anti-Tank gun.

Ches O'Peake - Washington, DC: Ches has been dubbed as the "Senator" of the circuit due to the fact of where he hails from. He hates the moniker and remembers which driver calls him it to his face. We just hope he doesn't hunt us down as his destruction path is wide. Sometimes he does focus a bit to much on the name calling, but it works, he drives angry. Ches has his car loaded out with a Machine gun mounted Front Left, a Starshell Launcher mounted Front Right. There is a Heavy Rocket, Mounted on top and a Machine Gun mounted in the Rear.

Avery Thomas - Buffalo, NY: The last of the locals and a young one, Avery at only 18 is a rookie to the circuit. But he has managed to show that he can handle a car and is a crack shot with what he has. He has picked up the nickname "Babyface" amongst the fans as he has that young innocent look about him. He has a a vulcan machine gun mounted in a turret on top and 2 machine guns mounted in front.

Now that you have met the drivers we will introduce you to the racing schedule for the season.
  1. Erie, PA - A nature track, some debris but it's a track and a way to introduce everyone to the ECADA.
  2. Buffalo, NY - Gritty small city block racing.
  3. Syracuse, NY - This is debris ridden track racing at it's greatest.
  4. Boston, MA - Large City Block Racing, this is considered one of the two marathon duels this season.
  5. Portland, ME - City Block racing with a chance of sea side drowning.
  6. Hartford, CT - This is a heavy debris ridden track.
  7. Newark, NJ - This is the combo track test for the season, races will be on the outskirts of city racing, taking you into a clean track and whip back into city blocks.
  8. New York City - Large City Block racing, this is the other marathon duel.

Alright, this is the Erie Track, I am not the best at the new map making software I found, but it will work to give you an impression of it. The rectangular buildings are for the fans, it keeps them safe from the bullets and explosions.

The Start / Finish line is the rubble in front of the buildings and the race will progress clockwise on the track. I will post more tomorrow.

Turns

There will be 2 turns a week, Sundays and Wednesdays. Turns are going to be simple, easy and just quick snap offs of a PM to me with your intentions for the Turn.

On a turn you have the ability to move and then you can either make a maneuver or shoot.

At the beginning of the race I will post starting order (With each cars top speed), a description of the events that have happened to lead us up into the turn. I will then post what current speeds are.

Maneuvers are typical racing moves with drafting, sliding and what not. Maneuvers will be critical for city tracks with the sharp turns and such.

Shooting, you tell me who you are targeting and what gun(s) you are using and it will all happen.

First Turn will be posted tomorrow (2/26/12) - After that post, your deadline begins to have all turns in by Wednesday.

Erie, PA Track

The camera does an overhead fly by of the field, as you see the scurrying about of the different race and dueling teams working within the infield and around the track. You notice the charred wreckage of several cars, some still smoldering as the shot pans in to an announcer.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the inaugural race for the East Coast Auto Duelers Association, or ECADA if you will." The announcer is a glamor boy through and through, he has the smile and charisma for the job. One wouldn't know he was one of the top duelers and he had some series burns on the face from his fare well tour. It's amazing what millions can buy you in surgery.

"We come live from the Erie Pennsylvania dirt track. It is a simple oval track with rubble and debris on it to provide some challenges to our duelers. It's not complicated like some of our runs will be this season but it is probably going to be the quickest duel we have. This track is going to test the drivers ability for speed and out right dueling, because this race will finish with 5 laps or complete annihilation of the field, well annihilation is a strong word but if the field stops moving, the race is over."

The camera pans away from the announcer and fades into the teams for today's race, it slowly pans over each vehicle and you can see each driver getting ready to go. A voice over begins after the second driver comes in to view.

"As you can see the teams are eagerly awaiting to get the show going. Let's get to your lineup and see who starts where. We are running with a staggered starting position. The starting positions are
  1. Stephen Plowher
  2. Ches O'Peake
  3. David Gonzalez,
  4. Fox McCloud
  5. David Ginsberg
  6. Joe cool King
  7. Avery Thomas
  8. Nate Thunder
  9. Rob Nielsen
  10. Crim Bryant
  11. Korbin Deckard
  12. Ace Idol
Ace Idol has the coveted I get to shoot at everyone final spot. Well ladies and gentlemen, the race is getting started and the drivers have fired up their engines and are waiting the call...."
The camera then pans to the track where the roar of the engines kick in and the crowd starts yelling, one drowns out the other...and it appears to be those looking for the explosions and blood shed.

"And the green light kicks on and we are off!"

Notes: We have all hit the first turn as well as the first turn of the track. Each turn is a turn in the track with 4 turns completing a lap. You can see how the movement order goes for this turn. All turns are due by Wednesday.

Newb question: If you have more than one weapon, can you shoot more than once on a turn? (ie. each gun gets one shot?) Also, do these weapons require any reload time?

You can only fire more than 1 weapon a turn if they are linked...those with 2 MG or Vulcans in the same section I have assumed are linked.

Rockets and missiles are one and dones...unless you have a rocket launcher.

You have one load out for your weapons meaning you will run out of ammo if you use it up.

I will send PMs out today for your top speeds and what your weapon ammo is like.

So how do we know who we can shoot or where we are on that track?

Right now, you are set in a staggered formation coming around the first turn. You can basically shoot at anyone in front of you, but understand, the farther away from you they are, the harder it will be to hit.
