Favorite Paintings

It suddenly occurred to me that I don't know much about art aside from knowing a painting here and there so I thought it might be fun if we all shared some of our favorite art and artists.

My favorite is Raphael's School of Athens: He has depictions of Socrates, Alexander the Great and other famous Greeks. All in all just a cool idea.

I did my generic college application essay on the School of Athens, talking about its mathematic precision and balance, and how the represented people were placed in such an orderly way. I argued it was the most mathematically perfect piece of art ever produced. Tripe, of course. But it seemed to go over well.

In person, I've found Cezanne to be probably the most moving artist I've seen. Some of his works with the Courtauld collection traveled the US some years ago, and it was breathtaking.

I'd post a Modigliani, but (in my view) his best works are his nudes, and I'm not looking to spending time in the pently box with that lot of characters.

I prefer the bedroom by Van Gogh

It is on display at the art institute in chicago for any locals. I also really like Las Dos Fridas

edit: I second the Cezanne comments. He did some very good work.

Me too. For me, I think it has to do with the fact that I like comic books so much. It's an instinctive reaction for me to drawn to stuff like that.

In general, for fine art, I'm turned off by "Modern Art"... When I go into the Herschorn in DC, I dislike most everything... but my favorite painting hands down I saw there. I'm generally not "moved" by much artwork, but this one really gets to me for some reason.:

"Both Members of This Club" by George Bellows

I second Jeeber's pick, and add Monet's Waterlilies...

I also like the Dali "The Persistence of Time", but off the top of my head that is the only modern piece I like enough to mention or even know the name of off the top of my head.

There is a painting in the movie Notting Hill - the Julia Roberts character gives it to the Hugh Grant character...it has a goat playing a violin...I like that one too

It is a very symbolically loaded painting, especialy with regard to the stance of Plato and Aristotle. Plato is pointing upward with steady feet, Aristotle is pointing forward with feet in motion and a flat book and so on. In a world were many people cannot read, visual depictions were tremendously important and hence such traditions of visual symbolism has flowed through western art since inception.

Well, I'm just wondering how someone could find room in their skull for that kind of information... and my only conclusion was that they must have been an art history major... which would grant one an immense degree of expertise in this field, but, sadly, finds little practical application in our present economy.

Nope, never taken an art course or studied it really (beyond bits and pieces here and there in high school). And an Art History major is just as useful as a History major or an English major. You don't display them on you CV to show what you know, rather what you are capable of knowing.

I'm starting to really get in to Masayuki Miyata, who passed away in 1997. He was a kiri-e artist, which is sort of a paper-cut out or silhouette style or art. This picture is from a selection of illustrations he made for The Tale of Genji.

This Thomas Eakins painting was always one of my favorites. I love boxing and all, the picture doesnt do it justice. It was as much the way Eakins captures a crowd watching a sporting event as anything though.

Does anyone remember the name and artist of that one medieval Spanish painting where it's in three parts and on the left is a bunch of young noblemen and women frolicking and on the right is three coffins with corpses in it?

Interesting interpretation of the Orpheus legend. I may have to use this painting as the source for my poem inspired by painting assignment this week for class

I'm a sucker for Rembrandt as well as Seurat.

I think I'm drawn to Jim's Corot offering more than most others above.

Oddly enough I'm also partial to Jackson Pollock
