Good half of football, despite few scoring chances.

Anyone who watched the Confed Cup was already immune to the vuvuzelas. They don't bother me one bit. I find myself focusing on the game that's being played, and can pretty handily ignore the horns.

Amazing non call. That said, of all the teams in this tournament, the one who really can't complain about a missed call got one.

Watched almost every game of the Confederations Cup. Still hate the damn things with a passion.

Does the allocation of teams from each region change? By this, I mean can a confederation lose a spot to another confederation in the next WC?

It has over time. It seems like maybe the most recent development was CONCACAF picking up a 1/2 slot?

I'm sure MIJB knows something about this.

Btw, for those wondering if CONCACAF will get an extra spot for 2014, I doubt it. A) We'd need Honduras to step up their game, and B) We'd have to do some horse trading, as the Wiki article on WCQ states:

Allocation of spots for the 2014 tournament will not be determined until after the new organising committee is assigned in early 2011.

how is that ? I mean, it sure looked to be offside rather than not but there is no way to say this was a bad miss. It was happening so fast (because of the defense going forward and the strike going upfield in full sprint) and was such a close call even in replay, that´s like saying a last 2nd half court shot that hits the bar is a terrible miss...

Great win by Mexico, France just liveless with no emotion, structure or ideas.

The best hope we've got is being the confederation who faces Oceania in the playoff. It is our turn in the rotation, but i would be willing to bet we won't get that lucky.

So if we do get that matchup, we'll have our 3.5 spots with a strong likelihood of the .5 beating New Zealand to make it 4.

If it was even offside it was just barely (as in the Mexican player's head was offside while his feet were onside... which would technically be offside).

I don't think people are really going to be up in arms about the call. Either way it was so insanely close, even with replay, that no one can reasonably complain.

I commented before I saw any replays. It was a hell of a lot closer on replay than it was at first glance. Agreed, you can't call it a missed call. Either way, France, ya know, needs to run back.

France shouldn't be here anyway, so I'm happy to see them go out quick.

I wish. As far as I know, the FIFA has no publically available official rules on this stuff.

I'll be at work.

My plan? DVR it. Fire up 4-5 browsers and immediately put them on company/non-media Web sites, so I don't risk happening on the result (I have to use the Internet a lot for work). Listen to music all the way home after work. Watch the game.

I think I have a 50-50 chance of getting away with it.

Not really. I can probably do it, but I'm not normally someone who listens to anything at work.

And besides, soccer doesn't translate to radio too well, IMO.

You're right, though--it will be tough.

Its not 'too' bad once you're used to it tbh, thats how I spent a lot of weekends of my childhood before cable - hunched next to a radio listening to commentary on matches I wasn't able to attend ...

(its also the inspiration for the 'text only' commentary which FM has )

Heh, heh...it's not so bad.

My radio sport experience, though, is borne on being raised listening to the best sport you can listen to on radio... baseball. Most other sports pale in comparison (basketball is closest).

I do like the text only option though on FM.

Radio reports can be genius. Some are capable of turning a boring stalemate 0-0 into an exciting game with lots of highlights.

Speaking of stalemate 0-0's: What's everybody's opinion on the conspiracy theory of Uruguay and Mexico settling for that? I'd assume Mexico wouldn't be too enthusiastic about facing Argentina in the round of 16, whereas playing Nigeria/Greece/South Korea is something any second round team will be happy with.

And most likely, both teams can afford a 1-goal loss and still hold off South Africa's steamrolling victory over the no-longer-motivated French.
