Another draw against a terrible team. We just can't find any offensive momentum in this one and don't even end up with a shot on goal because Hoffman was stripped three times. Arroyo was terrific in his return, but we need to collect some more wins if we want to promote back to First League.

Final: Des Moines 0, Ottawa 0
Goals:
Top Three: Arroyo, Guy, Pressley

Dewitt - lvl 22

Prestige Cup - Quarterfinals - Leg 2

San Francisco Deltas at Des Moines Menace

It's a snowy field, which makes skills very difficult to use. With a 1-0 aggregate lead, San Fran tries to waste time in the first half by having an RD run down the flanks and hold the ball. I get tired of this so send in a poor defending midfielder to foul him and force them to get on with it. We win a corner right before the half and a motivated Cannon scores on a bicycle kick. The snow makes it hard for either team to get momentum and a scoreless 2nd half means we head to penalties.

Cannon converts! 1-0
They miss! 1-0
Burroughs misses! 1-0
They miss! 1-0
Betts misses! 1-0
They convert! 1-1
Guy converts! 2-1
They miss!
Shepard converts for the win! 3-1

We advance to the semifinals!

Final: Des Moines 1 (3), San Francisco 1 (1)
Goal: Cannon
Top Three: Shepard, Cannon, Barkley

Betts - lvl 55
Pressley - lvl 47
Burroughs - lvl 19

Despite our cup success, we are in a rut with three straight draws in league play, putting our chances of promotion in jeopardy. They take the lead 36 minutes in on a power shot that gets by our defense and Pressley. Hoffman earns a penalty, but fails to convert it. However, he manages to equalize just after the half by dribbling past the keeper. We're unable to get into scoring position again to find the equalizer.

Final: Des Moines 1 , North Carolina 1
Goal: Hoffman
Top Three: Hoffman, Barkley, Hatton

Barkley - lvl 43

We finally get back in the win column. Hoffman scores 4 minutes in on a dribble. After the half, Cannon gets behind the defense and easily nails a precise shot past the keeper. We manage 63% possession and shut down their offense.

Final: Des Moines 2, Saint Louis 0
Goal: Hoffman, Cannon
Top Three: Hoffman, Arroyo, Betts

A wild one against a team we've now faced 4 times this season. Cannon gets us started 6 minutes in with a Rainbow Feint. We held the lead until right after halftime when they hit a shot from the right side of our defense that gets by Pressley. It looks like we blew it when our counterattack pass gets intercepted and they get the ball to a lvl Rainbow Feint guy who gives them the lead 88 minutes in. With time running out, an exhausted Hoffman dribbles behind the defense, survives a tackle attempt and wins a corner. Shepard hits a terrific corner that Hoffman manages to head through for the equalizer.

Final: Des Moines 2, San Francisco 2
Goal: Hoffman, Cannon
Top Three: Hoffman, Shepard, Cannon

Burroughs - lvl 20

Despite a draw against the #1 team, we fall to 5th and are 4 pts out of the last promotion spot. Still 6 matches to go.

We are in complete control in this match, but have difficulty building a lead in the 1st half. Burroughs gets intercepted and Cannon gets denied. We finally break through 58 minutes in when the Burroughs to Cannon connection works and Cannon puts it through for the lead. Colorado never seriously threatens to score.

Final: Des Moines 1, Colorado 0

Top Three: Betts, Guy, Cannon

Yes, we're playing Colorado again, just three days after our cup match. With a fatigued Hoffman resting, Cannon comes up huge, nailing two difficult shots from the right side of the pitch. We control 73% of the possession and easily swat away all 4 of Colorado's shots.

Final: Des Moines 2, Colorado 0
Goal: Cannon 2
Top Three: Cannon, Metzger, Betts

Without a doubt, this was our best performance of the season. They have a really good keeper, but not the best defensive structure. This allows us to get good position to fire shots on their keeper without any defenders getting in the way. Cannon does this 28 minutes in to give us the lead. Right after halftime, Hoffman breaks in from the wings and earns a penalty, which he converts. We grab a 3rd goal when Cannon is able to beat the keeper on another close in shot. They take one back in the 82nd minute on a penalty after a corner. However, Hoffman earns yet another penalty and scores again to rub salt in the wound.

Final: Des Moines 4, Sacramento 1
Goal: Cannon 2, Hoffman 2
Top Three: Burroughs, Hoffman, Cannon

Tellez - lvl 22
Burroughs - lvl 21

With a 1-0 aggregate lead, we don't waste time building that lead. Hoffman breaks in from the wing and dribbles by the keeper to give us a lead 10 minutes in. 16 minutes later, Cannon beats the keeper from the right sideline. He does this again, right after halftime. We're cruising and it's all good news until an asshole player from Colorado makes a dirty tackle on Betts and sends him to the injury list for 4 months! They manage to pull a meaningless goal back, but I'm still pissed and get it to Cannon one more time to complete the hat trick and he does.

Final: Des Moines 4 (5), Colorado 1 (1)
Goal: Cannon 3, Hoffman
Top Three: Carrier, Barkley, Tellez

I just realized I forgot to post a 1-0 victory we had against Charleston Battery before the last cup match. Ooops. Oh well. We beat Charleston 1-0.

Orange County Blues (13-5-5, 4th) at Des Moines Menace (13-8-2, 4th)

It's Hoffman's day to shine and he starts off with his usual show of dribbling prowess. He gets behind the defense and dribbles past the keeper. After the half, Orange County takes advantage of a gap in our defensive line (created by repeated attacks) and scores on a Rainbow Feint. No worries as we just send in Hoffman to do the same thing and this time he earns the penalty. He converts for the win. Pressley made several big saves in this one and we successfully defended three corners.

Final: Des Moines 2, Orange County 1
Goal: Hoffman 2
Top Three: Hoffman, Guy, Burroughs

Metzger - lvl 42
Tellez - lvl 26

*Promotion is all but assured. We have a 6 pt lead with 2 matches to go. Even if we lost both matches and our enemies won 2, we have a big GD margin.

San Antonio plays a ridiculous defensive formation with everyone bunched up by the keeper. This makes it hard for us to get any good shots, especially when Hoffman gets injured early on. But it also means they have no offensive potential, because their defenders are too far from their midfielders. They manage 1 shot on goal, but maybe it was their best strategy because it earned them a point instead of a loss, but still irritating. The draw did clinch our promotion back to the First League.

Final: Des Moines 0, San Antonio 0
Goal:
Top Three: Arroyo, Shepard, Willoughby

So this was a pretty cool moent that I hadn't seen before. Richmond's situation is that a draw would clinch their promotion. Because of that, Richmond only takes 1 shot on goal and spends the entire 2nd half just running around with the ball. Since we don't have anyone in the midfield who can win the ball (I rested Arroyo for the cup final), they just keep passing it to someone and holding it. They even walk back from a shot on goal because goals for them didn't matter. It only mattered to prevent goals from us. It's a very smart AI strategy, but I feel bad for the fans in attendance. It also prevents us from capturing the league title.

Final: Des Moines 0, San Antonio 0
Goal:
Top Three: Guy, Barkley, Pressley

*We earn $435,000 from our sponsor for promoting and $240,000 from the league for finishing 2nd. This puts us at $1.6 million.

Prestige Cup Final

Des Moines Menace vs. Sacramento Republic

This game started off very similar to our last two. Sacramento plays it really slow and cautious, taking advantage of our lack of wing players and my unwillingness to have Arroyo go from side to side chasing people down. Thus it is a scoreless 1st half. In the 2nd half, they try to dribble in closer to get a good shot, but Barkley steals the ball. He gets it to Burroughs, who fires a long pass to Cannon, waiting in front of the keeper. And Cannon manages to beat the best keeper in the league with a precise shot. Sacramento tries to pile on their pressure, but can't find a path offensively because we shut down the path for Rowan, their Wing Forward who has led the tournament in goals. They're unable to break through and we are the cup champions!

Final: Des Moines 1, Sacramento 0
Goal: Cannon
Top Three: Barkley, Cannon, Burroughs

Congrats on the Cup win! I find those far more difficult, mostly because I almost always play my backups and youth and get knocked out early. Then you get the sad old man message from my owner about how it's all good.

Thanks! My midfield depth was really useful there. I was able to rotate Shepard and Burroughs, so always had someone with Long Pass in the game.

Offseason activities...

*I picked Jaguarrr as the sponsor. They'll pay $16,500 for each goal and $72,500 for each home victory.

*Youth pull is a lvl 22 CD named Titus. He has 32 defense. Not good enough to get playing time in the First League.

*I bought the 2nd level of Scout's assistant, lowering the transfer list age to 24. I need to survive a season in the First League before I can afford to upgrade my youth squad.

*I renew Burroughs for the absurdly cheap price of 3 yrs, $6,806.

*I renew Arroyo for 3 yrs, $309,732. Still only 25 yrs old and one of my best players

*I renew Hoffman for 1 yr, $133,292. He's 32 yrs old, so this will likely be his last season with us, unless I decide to have him finish his career here.

*I renew Hatton for 3 yrs, $18,557. He's already a solid player and is a year away from learning Slide Tackle. Will definitely be a starter then.

*Guy is currently worth $4.2 million. I don't really have anyone to replace him yet (or I mean I don't have anyone to replace the guys who will replace him). So I decide to renew him for 1 yr, $725,660 and hold off my decision for another year.

*I buy LF Lindsey. He's 26 yrs old, has 58 control and knows Cannon Shot. Will be good for our Forward rotation. We were just wasting space there last season when either Hoffman or Cannon were out. Only cost $273,000.

*I buy LD Lange for $46,300. He's there for the matches when I have to use someone on the wing to prevent the wing forwaqrd from cutting in.

*I'm left with $73,206.

It's a hot day and people get winded pretty quickly. Atlanta manages to pierce our defensive line and beat Pressley in the 26th minute. Just after the half, they get a man sent off for an aggressive tackle on Hoffmanand Cannon is able to convert a Rainbow Feint off of the free kick. We're unable to find the winner despite controlling possession the rest of the way.

Final: Des Moines 1, Atlanta 1

Hoffman is winded from our first match, so I start my new wing forward Lindsey. He promptly gets injured 6 minutes in. But that injury earns a penalty and Edmondson (who came in to replace him) gets his first career goal. I'm glad I switched Shepard's focus to Control. This has allowed me to build up better attacks by letting him hold the ball in the midfield for a turn while I get my Forwards in place. This pays off 22 minutes in when Cannon gets behind the defense and Shepard gets it to him for the easy goal. At the beginning of the 2nd half, Hoffman does his usual dribbling magic and goes right through the defense and past the keeper for our 2nd goal. We control 70% of the possession in this one

Our counterattacking ability shines again as we take a missed Orlando shot and quickly get it down the field to Cannon, who beats the keeper with a Rainbow Feint. Orlando keeps attacking and our defense holds strong. We get several more chances, but Burroughs is unable to complete passes to Cannon in position. But the 1 goal was enough as we continue our hot streak to begin the season

They score 4 minutes in on a low percentage shot that Pressley makes a terrible effort against. Later in the 1st half, we're able to equalize when Cannon gets behind the defense and perfectly executes a precision shot. Midway through the 2nd half, Burroughs makes a really difficult pass to get it to Hoffman right by the keeper, and he dribbles home the winner. We're getting some fortunate rolls so far, but this is a terrific start to the season.

Top Three: Hoffman, Metzger, Arroyo

I knew our run couldn't last forever, but this was a brutal way to end it. They earn a close in direct free kick and Rainbow Feint their wan into an early lead. Then just before the half, they double their lead when they intercept a pass and take advantage of a gap in my defense. Cannon gets a couple good looks at the goal with no defenders in the way, but can't secure either shot. Minnesota adds another Rainbow Feint goal midway through the 2nd to make it a blowout.

Final: Minnesota 3, Des Moines 0
Goal:
Top Three: Burroughts, Arroyo, Hoffman

I REALLY should have listened to this. But I didn't.

Been a while since a game has grabbed me like this one has. A couple of things:

Not too concerned with this cup yet. That's a good thing, because we got throttled here. They go up no less than 4 minutes in when Barkley misses an easy tackle. Cannon manages to equalize with a very difficult shot. But Charlotte pulls away in the 2nd half when they're able to get their lvl 3 Rainbow Feint guy the ball in the penalty area and we have no hope of stopping it.

Final: Charlotte 3, Des Moines 1
Goal: Cannon
Top Three: Sheppard, Hatton, Cannon

Tellez - lvl 34
Hatton - lvl 27

Several hot weather matches in a row, including cup matches just a few days apart, have really worn out our starters. We have to play this one without Shepard and Cannon. And even Hoffman has to sub out at the half. Despite this, we have a chance to win when Lindsey strips a defender of the ball and fires a Cannon Shot. It's denied and Hatton's corner goes out of bounds.

Final: Des Moines 0, Richmond 0
Goal:
Top Three: Burroughs, Metzger, Pressley

Carrier - lvl 58
Barkley - lvl 50

To be fair, I did spend 3 of my first 4 seasons in the Amateur League. I've also been sent right back down every time I first promoted to a league.

Yeah, this is why I maxed out the defensive coach. The defenders have brought me a steady stream of income.

Agreed. As strong as any game I've played.

Yeah, one thing I really like is each league is almost a whole new game. I've had to adapt each time I moved up. I 've wanted to do a video of a match for a while now, but will probably need a better machine to do so. The biggest thing I've learned in the higher leagues is to focus more and more on skills. Attributes still have some importance, but it's skills that make the difference.

Ugh. This one's all on me. Cannon gives us the lead 22 minutes in when he gets behind the defense and receives a great pass. They equalize by getting behind my defense and dodging a tackle. However, Cannon makes a terrific shot to put us back up right before the half. That should've been the winner. However, with time running down, I forget to plug a gap in my defense. San Fran takes advantage by getting the ball to a Forward with Cannon Shot. He finds the equalizer. Our last shot is blocked.

Final: Des Moines 2, San Francisco 2
Goals: Cannon 2
Top Three: Cannon, Barkley, Burroughs

A couple more things I noticed:

Quote:
Guy is currently worth $4.2 million. I don't really have anyone to replace him yet (or I mean I don't have anyone to replace the guys who will replace him). So I decide to renew him for 1 yr, $725,660 and hold off my decision for another year.

He's only 27 and still exploding in value(4.1 mil compared to 2.6 a year ago. Never mind the fact that I haven't hit the quarter-million mark yet with any of my current 'stars' :P). If it was me I'd bite the bullet and keep riding that horse, at least until it's close to peaking and he's not six years away from the mandatory selling age.

Also, I notice you don't use wide players much; Hoffman's the only recent starter, Willoughby and now Lange off the bench. I've found fullbacks to be invaluable on my restart and am going to start experimenting the more forward positions. One of my initial crop, RD Saegno, had unimpressive defence but mid-30s Control at the start, so he was able to push up the wing, retain possession for a turn, then instigate and attack. I found this very useful despite a general lack of particularly effective forwards. The other clubs like to camp out on the wings to hold the ball as well if they are playing defensively or protecting a lead; I'm wondering what you do about that at your level with no natural players out there?

Gotta learn from you so I can skip a few road bumps .

I was wondering that too. I'm still stuck in the 3rd league, but I've always had 1 or 2 wing guys that I run the offense through. Maybe running the offense up the sidelines isn't consistent enough?

I'm thinking I should probably use those roster spots to strengthen the middle.

Running through the wings is a fine strategy. I just haven't found any I've liked on the transfer list or youth pulls. If I found a good winger with good control, I'd definitely do that more often. Right now I'm comfortable letting Shepard hold it in the middle.

I run a flat back 5 on the 2nd row with a DF-CD-DF-CD-DF format. Sometimes I'll put the CDs together to deal with a Rainbow Feint. If Lange comes in, it's only when I need a 6th defender to close the gap for a wing forward. I like the DFs for their shot stopping ability and it's easier to rotate them since I don't have to train right/left.

If the AI holds it on the wings, i do one of two things:

1) Send Arroyo after them. He can usually get there in one action and rarely misses a tackle on the 2nd action.

2) Let him hold it there. Send someone to press him and then set up the counterattack by moving Cannon next to the keeper.

Good answer. I like the idea of skill-limiting abilities of the RD/LD, but the idea of going with the best features of the talent you have available, and not what you'd like to have … a lot to be said for that as well. I'm presently getting my butt handed to me on corners in the 2nd league, but I'm guessing with your setup, even though your defensive line doesn't have much higher control ratings, you probably don't get nearly as many shots through to the keeper for it to matter as much.

This is the main formation I run. I like it because it creates an offside trap for the opponent. If they want to take Pressley one on one, they're going to have to dribble their way through.

This is the formation I run to protect against a good Wing Forward. They cause problems with their break-in, because even if the CD's successfully make the tackle, it ruins my offside trap. But with a player there, there is no path for them to use that ability. I had been using Willoughby in the RD spot if I needed someone there, but now I will probably just train Lange to play both sides.

They have a really weird defensive formation with two DF's in a line in front of the keeper, no CD's, and an RD/LD. What this means is Cannon can get in close without worrying about getting tackles. So I keep feeding him the ball. Vancouver has a terrific keeper and blocks two of Cannon's shots, but the third one goes in. And that was all we would need as our CD's make key tackles to prevent the Rainbow Feint and Lange blocks the path of their 85 Control Wing Forward.

Final: Des Moines 1, Vancouver 0
Goals: Cannon
Top Three: Cannon, Arroyo, Shepard

Betts - lvl 62
Metzger - lvl 47
Arroyo - lvl 46
Lange - lvl 27

National Cup - Qualifying Round - Leg 2

Charlotte Independence at Des Moines Menace

Charlotte has a 3-1 aggregate lead and they didn't forget. The play keep away for the 1st half. In the 2nd half, they take advantage of our desperation and get the ball on a counterattack to their lvl 3 Rainbow Feint guy and he puts them ahead. This pretty much dooms us as we now need 3 goals. Hoffman uses his break-in ability to score two and we "win" this match, but it wasn't enough for the aggregate. Oh well, I wasn't really focused ont he cup this year.

Final: Des Moines 2, Charlotte 1
Goals: Hoffman 2
Top Three: Hoffman, Burroughs, Arroyo

Barkley - lvl 51
Pressley - lvl 46
Cannon - lvl 44
Burroughs - lvl 26

Cannon gives us the lead on a Rainbow Feint after Betts and Shepard do a great job quickly getting the ball down the field. Cannon gets a couple more chances, but gets denied. No worries, as my defensive set up forced Philadelphia to take normal shots against us and all three of them were easily swatted away.

I taunt their lvl 3 Slide Tackle defender to come out and take the ball from Hoffman. This creates a gap in their defense that Cannon fills, allowing him to score an easy goal right before halftime. That would be the only shot on goal we'd get, but it would be enough. Louisville's attempts at scoring were hopeless. They even tried to take a direct shot through Guy once.

Final: Des Moines 1, Louisville 0
Goals: Cannon
Top Three: Guy, Cannon, Burroughs

Betts - lvl 63

Lange - lvl 29

18 minutes in, Hoffman used his break-in ability to draw a penalty and he converted the shot. Once again, that was all we would need. San Jose is forced to take low percentage shots and our defense holds strong as usual.

Final: Des Moines 1, San Jose 0
Goals: Hoffman

Hoffman gets us started off by dribbling past the keeper at the 4 minute mark. However, this would be a time we can't hold the lead. Cannon misses two Rainbow Feints and Puerto Rico FC has a forward with a lvl 3 Slide Tackle skill. They use this to strip the ball from a defender, which earns him an extra turn right in front of Pressley. He nails the shot for the equalizer. We're unable to find the winner.

Final: Des Moines 1, Puerto Rico 1
Goals: Hoffman
Top Three: Hoffman, Burroughs, Metzger

I really don't know what it is, but this team that can't beat anyone else just owns us. I really can't figure it out. Hoffman gets denied on a dribble and misses a penalty. Cannon misses a Rainbow Feint. Shepard and Burroughs both have passes intercepted in critical situations. Charlotte scores twice on counterattacks and we have no answer.

Final: Charlotte 2, Des Moines 0

Top Three: Burroughs, Betts, Hoffman

Hoffman opens the game with a dribble past the keeper. Just before halftime, he doubles the lead when he earns yet another penalty and converts this time. Cannon is stuck in a slump as he misses yet another Rainbow Feint. Things get scary as they pull one back in the 76th minute, but we're able to hold on for the victory.

Winter Break update...

*Another lame youth pull. Wilkerson is a lvl 24 Center Forward with the Nutmeg skill (useless against any team with a Sweeper) and accuracy of 44.

*I've been buying First Scout's assistant upgrades, lowering the age of players in the transfer list. Right now I've got that age down to 23.

*Betts is 32 years old and wants a ton of money to renew. Luckily, I find someone to replace him. I sell Betts for $1.55 million.

*I replace him with CD Swan, who has 81 defense at 25 yrs old. He also has the Reaction skill, making him hard to beat with the Rainbow Feint. Cost only $470,000.

*I also make a splash and go for RD Strong. He's exactly the type of wing player we've been talking about. He's only 24, is lvl 46, with 40 passing, 59 defense, and 46 control. Most importantly, he has lvl 3 slide tackle. Cost was $1.28 million.

*I renew Tellez for 1 yr, $24,000. Just to have a backup.

*I renew Willoughby for 1 yr, $12,157.

*Lange and Lindsey are at the 7 month mark, but I hold off on them for now. If I decide I'll need them, I can renew in the offseason. Neither are worth enough to sell.

*I hold off for now. Lots of teams making purchases on the transfer list, so it could change. I now have $645,155.

So, we continue our winning streak thanks to another early Hoffan dribble. And we pretty much control the match from start to finish. However, a dirty tackle sends Shepard out of the game and he will miss the rest of the season. Oooof! Also, Cannon continues to struggle as he misses yet another shot.

Final: Des Moines 1, Atlanta 0
Goals: Hoffman
Top Three: Hoffman, Arroyo, Shepard

Hoffman - lvl 53
Swan - lvl 45
Burroughs - lvl 28

*Carrier just hit his group bonus and now has 128 defense and a $3.69 million value.

Another one of those frustrating matches where we couldn't manage a single shot on goal. Our new RD Strong has a great game chasing people down, but our passing game is off and their offside trap makes it difficult for Cannon to get in position.

Cannon misses three more shots in this one, but he finally breaks through in the 60th minute with a precision shot that beats the keeper. They try several low percentage shots that have no hope of going in. Pressley must be really bored.
