The Detroit Lions 2001 - Alternate Reality
I was reading an ESPN article that listed the readers worst NFL teams of all time. The #1 team was the 2001 Detroit Lions. The beginning of the Matt Millen era was definitely a sign of things to come. What if Marty Morningweg and Matt Millen were never given to the keys that were the Detroit Lions?
Since my game save of FBCB crashed i figured i would start up an FOF2k7 dynasty. I like to progress slowly thru my solo unis. I am not sure how detailed i will get so we will just see how things go. |

The Offense
The Starters
QB - Charlie Batch RB - Reuben Droughns FB - Cory Schlesinger SE - Herman Moore FL - Johnie Morton TE - Pete Mitchell LT - Jeff Backus - Rookie LG - Tony Semple C - Dominic Raola - Rookie RG - Brendan Stai RT - Barrett Brooks P - John Jett K - Jason Hansen I am not too excited about starting two rookies on the offensive line. If the line plays well Droughns should have a whole bunch of running room. Our top 3 wideouts are solid with Johnnie Morton who is a SE playing the flanker spot and Germane Crowell being the #3 wideout. Jason Hansen and John Jett are very good so our special teams play should be a strength. Mike McMahon is our #2 QB as a rookie and a potential star if he fully develops. |

The Defensive Starters
LDE - Robert Porcher
LDT - Shaun Rogers - Rookie RDT - Luther Ellis RDE - Alonzo Spellman WLB - Barrett Green MLB - Stephen Boyd SLB - Chris Claiborne LCB - Todd Lyght RCB - Chidi Iwuoma SS - Tommy Bennett FS - Kurt Schultz The defensive line is very good and the linebackers are definitely solid. The defensive backfield is weak at best and will need to be upgraded as soon as possible. Overall i am not sure how the heck this team was so bad. Obviously the great Marty Morningweg had a lot to do with the Lions being bad. I can definitely see this being a decent season but that is why we play the games. |

2001 Exhibition WK1
We are off for the first week but we do negotiate some contract extensions.
RB Reuben Droughns 3yrs $3.16 mill SE Herman Moore 2yrs $4.31 mill I would like Moore to retire as a Lions for whatever it is worth. Droughns is a good runner and at that price is cheap. We are currently in talks to extend Johnnie Mortons contract but his negotiation has become stalled. Morton's agent is not happy that he is not the man in Detroit and think he could make big money in the free agent market. |

2001 Exhibition WK2 adn WK3
Bengals 16 at Lions 24
Charlie Batch and Mike McMahon split the snap with batch having the better game. Herman Moore with 6 catches and 166 yards. Porcher and Spellman come up with 2.5 and 2 sacks respectively as we sack the Cincy QBs 7 times. Injuries: WR Johnnie Morton is probable for the next game with a broken toe. Lions 9 at Browns 7 A definite defensive battle. Jason Hansen was 3 for 5 on field goals missing from 42 yards and 51 yards. Our offense had a total of 247 yards and Charlie batch was again the better of the two QBs. Alonzo Spellman was the defensive leader with 7 tackles and 2.5 sacks. So far Spellman is has been a pleasant suprise. Our offensive line gives up 5 sacks but it is the exhibition season. Injuries: Herman Moore and Johnnie Morton are both probable other than that our team is healthy. Contracts: We have a few players we would like to get extensions worked out for other than Johnnie Morton. These players are MLB - Stephen Boyd - a fan favorite and a solid MLB DE - Alonzo Spellman - the problem with Alonzo is that he wants a 3 year extension and given his past and 10 years in the league i do not know if we can commit what he wants. WR - Johnnie Morton - this might be a tough one because so far Johnnie wants #1 WR money. TE - Pete Mitchell - we are pretty solid at TE but Mitchell is one of the best right now SS Tommy Bennett - While not a superstar Bennett is solid. RT Barret Brooks and RG Brendan Stai - Both players are starters but we could definitely use an upgrade at both positions. It would be tough to lose the entire right side of the line . We love to run and neither player is much of a run blocker. |

2001 Exhibition WK 4 and WK 5
Lions 37 at Colts 10
Charlie Batch plays for a couple of drives and secures the starting job. Mike McMahon plays the rest of the game and shows promise going 17-23 with 161 yards 3 TDs and 2 picks. Germane Crowell shines with 5 catches and 139 yards adding 2 TDs. The defense has a good game limiting the Colts to 50 yards rushing and 224 total yards. We move to 3-0 on the exhibition season with Buffalo next up. Injuries: QB Charlie Batch hyperextends his knee and is doubtful for next week so he will get a rest and McMahon will start. Bills 24 at Lions 31 Mike McMahon starts things off and leads the team to a TD. Detmer takes off and finishes the game off leading the team on a 4th quarter drive for the win. Tery Fair takes a kickoff back 92 yards for a TD and Herman Moore adds a couple of TD catches. We finish the exhibition season perfect. Our defense gives up over 400 yards passing to Alex Van Pelt and Rob Johnson. Injuries: We escape injury free but Charlie Batch is listed as questionable for our opener at Oakland. Free Agents: We sat down with Johnnie Morton's agent Allen Trim and after 4 hours of negotiations it looks like it is going to take 3yrs for a total of $10.5 million. We have the cap room but the question is do i want to commit over $3 million a year to Morton. Morton is 30 years old so i am not sure i want to commit that kind of money to him. I told Allen i would give him an answer by week 3. Allen's response was "it could cost you more." |

Week 1 Lions at Raiders
Lions 34 at Raiders 31
An offensive shootout thru the air. Raiders QB Rich Gannon threw 51 passes for 387 yards, 3 TDs and 2 picks. Ty Detmer got the start for us and did not disappoint going 23-35 310 yards and 4 TDs without a pick. On the ground Reuben Droughns had 17 carries and 95 yards. Herman Moore led the way for our receivers with 111 yards and a TD. On defense the only bright spot was Alonzo Spellman who had 1.5 sacks and 4 hurries. Our secondary which we knew would be a problem is going to have to improve or every game will be a shootout. Our offense should keep us in every game if only we can stop someone. Injuries: Charlie Batch is probable and looks like he will be ready to start. Next Up: Minnesota Vikings come to Detroit. Randy Moss and Cris Carter are just licking their chops looking at our corners. Early odds list us as a 7 point favorite. |

Detroit,Michigan - The Lions agreed to a contract extension with Johnnie Morton for 3 years and $10.53 million, $3.9 million of which was a bonus. General Manager Roy Paeth stated that MLB Stephen Boyd and DE Alonzo Spellman are next on his list. Paeth is also in talks with TE Pete Mitchell's agent to keep Mitchell in Detroit. Roy Paeth said that the Lions now have one of the top receiving corps in the league and he would like to keep it that way.

WK 2 Vikings at Lions
Vikings 34 at Lions 31
Our worst fears came true as Randy Moss runs wild thru our secondary. The Culpepper to Moss connection was good for 11 catches, 197 yards and 1 TD. Our defense was unable to stop the Vikings running either as Michael Bennett scored 3 touchdowns. Our offense was good as James Stewart and Reuben Droughns combining for 159 yards. Charlie batch threw for 278 yards 2 TDs and 1 pick. Johnnie Morton showed his extension was deserved with 4 catches, 102 yards and 2 TDs. Our pass defense was awful and our defensive line could not generate enough pressure. Stephen Boyd was the loan bright spot with 13 tackles. This will be an interesting season for sure. Injuries: Charlie batch is 100% and Aaron Gibson has a bruised heel. Next Up: We travel to Philly to meet the Eagles who are a 2 point favorite. While the Eagle receivers do not scare anyone QB Donovan McNabb could have a field day with our secondary. We come in with the number 1 offense and the number 32 defense. Week 3 Lions (1-1) at Eagles (0-2)
Lions 14 at Eagles 45
Yep you read that right. We were down 24-17 at the end of the 3rd quarter and then everything fell apart. On two consecutive drives Charlie Batch threw pick 6s to the other team. Batch would throw one other interception and we fumbled the ball away 3 times. Our defense played decent against the run but could not stop the Eagles pass attack. RB James Stewart was the lone bright spot carrying the the ball 11 times gaining 78 yards and scoring 1 TD. Injuries: We are currently injury free. Next Up: The Bears come to town in an important divisional clash. We are somehow a 6 point favorite. We maintain our spot as the #1 offense and our defense is still the worst. The Bears offense is the worst in the league and the defense is average with a good secondary and linebacking unit. |

Bears (1-2) at Lions (1-2)
Bears 14 at Lions 36
We show up on both sides of the ball against an inept Bears team. We hold the Bears to 51 yeards rushing and 200 yards passing. Bears QB Danny Wuerfel was sacked twice, picked off twice, hurried 4 times and knocked donw 5 times. Our offense showed up big time with Stewart and Droughns combining for 2 TDs and 161 yards rushing. QB Charlie Batch has a decent game throwing for 280 yards and TDs one to Morton and the other to TE Mitchell. On defense Robert Porcher was the leader with 2 sacks, 2 tackle, 2 hurried and 2 knockdowns. Definitely a good win but does it really say much about our team since the Bears are bad. Never the less i will take any division win. Injuries: Starting center Dominic Raiola is out with a hyperextended knee. Backup Eric Beverly will have to fill in until Raiola is back. Next Up: at the 2-1 Redskins who are 1 point favorites. We come in with the number 1 offense facing the Redskins D which is also #1. Fortuntely the Redskin offense is middle of the pack led by Jeff George at QB and RB Stephen Davis |

Lions (2-2) at Redskins (1-2)
Lions 31 at Redskins 28
Lets just say that the #1 defense got embarrassed. Charlie was 27-40 407 yards and 4 TDs. Three Lions receivers were over 100 yards, Moore 8-117 1 Td, Crowell 6-96 2 TDs and Morton 4-75 1 TD. Overall a great job on the offense and just enough from our defense. Although Jeff George did throw for over 400 yards SS Tommy Bennett had 15 tackles and 1 pick. A good win but it is still disturbing how many passing yards we are giving up and the lack of pressure we are generating. We are only able to get one sack in this game. Injuries: We still only have one injury which is C Dominic Raiola. Next Up: We get a bye in week 5. Next up we will take a look where we stand so far. |

Next Up The Buccaneers at Home
Tampa Bay comes to Detroit sporting the leagues number one defense and is a 1 point favorite. We are lucky that the Bucs starting CB Donnie Abraham is out this week. Our center Raiola is still out and expected to be back in 2 weeks. Our defense has retaken the 32nd ranking and will face the Bucs #10 offense. This will be another big test for our offense.

Buccaneers (5-1) at Lions (3-2)
Bucs 14 at Lions 29
Our offense continues to amaze me as they slice up another #1 defense albeit a bit wounded defense. Charlie Batch does the job again going 26-33 289 yards and 1 TD. WR Johnnie Morton is the star of the day catching 8 passes for 127 yards and a TD. Our defense comes thur limiting the Buc to 223 total yards. Bucs QB Brad Johnson is running for his life all day long getting sacked 6 times. DE Robert Porcher is a beast accounting for 6 tackles, 6 sacks, 4 hurries and 3 knockdowns. Jason Hansen connects on 5 field goals and single handedly outscores the Bucs. Injuries: Raiola is now probable and may start this week. Next Up: We travel to the Chicago Bears (3-4).Oddsmakers have us a 10 point favorite. Code:

Stephen Boyd's contract extension is for 3 years and $4.5 million. This will keep Boyd in Detroit thru the end of the 2003 season. |
