Feelin' Blue: An NCAA/Madden 2010 Dynasty [NCAA 10] Now Interactive - Sign up now

Since Madden Franchise is so well received and it appears NCAA imports actually work decently enough, I am going to be doing an NCAA and Madden dynasty coinciding with one another. In NCAA I will handle the recruiting for the Duke Blue Devils. I might even play a game or two with them every year to see the players, but basically I want to get a team I can build and try to make into a power while passing guys on into Madden.

As far as Madden goes I shall be using the Detroit Lions. I'll expand more on that in a thread for the Madden dynasty however.

2009 Duke Blue Devil Roster/Depth Chart

Quarterback

1. Sr Thaddeus Lewis (85 OVR)
2. RS Fr Sean Renfree (80 OVR)
3. Fr Mike Cappeto (68 OVR)

Red Shirt: Fr Sean Schroder (75 OVR)

Analysis: We have a nice 1-2 with Lewis and Renfree. Renfree has 82 SP and can come in to run some option offense, but Lewis is the main signal caller. Nothing flashy, just dependable. Freshman Sean Schroder has a future but the red shirt was a must. We need to still recruit a solid QB for competition sake, let alone depth.

Halfback

1. RS Sr Requan Boyette (85)
2. So Jay Hollingsworth (79)
3. Fr Desmond Scott (78)
4. Rs FR Patrick Krunwue (76)

Analysis:I wish I could redshirt Scott, but it isn't going to happen. He starts the year third on the depth chart but will eventually be the #2, maybe even during the WKU game, we'll see. Boyette is entrenched at starter and if he's healthy should be a 1000 yard back. We must add 1-2 more HB though in recruiting.

Fullback

1. So Garrett Utt (64)

Analysis:Utt isn't very good. He'll be okay as a blocker, but he can't ever touch the ball or else we're doomed to turn it over. An upgrade is a priority though just a body at all would be nice to back him up with.

Wide Receiver

1. So Johnny Williams (82)
2. So Donovan Varner (80)
3. Jr Austin Kelly (78)
4. Rs Jr Sheldon Bell (78)
5. Rs So Josh Trezvant (76)
6. Rs So Matt Pridemore (74)

Red Shirt: Fr Tyree Watkins (74), Conner Vernon (74), Corey Gattis (73)

Analysis:We have a lot of good, solid young players here lead by Johnny Williams. The problem is we don't have but one WR over 6'2 (Bell) which is a concern. We'll go after one or two WR if they're tall and have talent, but I won't waste a scholly here just because.

Tight End

1. Rs Jr Brett Huffman (74)
2. Rs Jr Brandon King (71)
3. Rs Fr Kenny Anunkie (65)

Red Shirt: Fr Ryan Hall (70)

Analysis: Once again, we need some help here. Huffman and King are good blockers but not great in the pass game. Ryan Hall should be good eventually but he is a project. We'll still go after a TE for depth but a real game breaker is on the want list.

Offensive Line

LT - Rs So Kyle Hill (78), Rs So Chris Shannon (75)
LG - Sr Jarrod Holt (84), Rs Jr Robert Drum (74)
C - Jr Bryan Morgan (79), Rs Jr Jeffrey Cowart (73)
RG - Rs Fr Jackson Anderson (71), Rs Fr Brian Moore (67), Rs Jr Brandon Harper (64)
RT - Rs Jr Pontus Bondeson (75), Rs Jr Mitchell Lederman (70)

Red Shirt: RT Dave Harding (68)

Analysis: Our OL is meh. It's decent enough to give us an edge vs bad teams but it won't do much vs teams like VT and GT. The good news is this OL will grow together and be stronger next year, but the problem is there is no depth. Adding 3-4 OL is a must in this class. For sure 1 OT, 1 OG and 1 C. Anything else is a plus.

Defensive Line

LE: Rs Jr Wes Oglesby (73), Rs Jr Patrick Egboh (73), Rs Jr Jeremy Ringfield (62)
DT: Rs Sr Vince Oghobaase (93), Fr John Drew (79), Rs So Charlie Hatcher (71), Rs Sr Kinney Rucker (58)
RE: Rs Sr Ayagna Okpokowuruk (81), Rs So Eriks Reks (64), Rs So Sam Poggi (60)

Red Shirt: Fr Justin Foxx (73)

Analysis: Our DL is for sure a strength, mainly because our best player and one of the Nation's top DT's, Vince Oghobaase anchors the unit. True Frosh John Drew should learn a lot playing next to him before becoming the leader of the DL next year. Besides those two, Okpokowuruk is a solid DE, and Oglesby and Egboh are serviceable. We need some DL depth this year in recruiting. At least two guys, preferably 3.

Linebackers

LOLB: Rs Jr Abraham Kromah (73), Rs Jr Andrew Holoman (67), Fr Kevin Rojas (60)
MLB: Sr Vincent Rey (73), Fr Austin Gamble (69), Jr Adam Banks (64)
ROLB: Jr Damian Thornton (73), Fr August Campbell (64), Jr Michael Tooley (63)

Analysis: Not exactly a group that instills fear in opposing teams. We have to add quality backers, though most of these guys will be back. More so a need because there is no talent. We'll take what we can get.

Secondary

CB: Sr Leon Wright (75), Rs Jr Chris Rwabukamba (73), So Lee Butler (73), Rs So Colin Jones (70), Rs Fr Randez James (68)
FS: Sr Catron Gainey (83), So Jeffrey Faris (62)
SS: So Matt Daniels (70), Rs Fr Jordon Byas (65), Fr Anthony Young-Wiseman (63)

Red Shirt: Fr Taylor Sowell (71), Fr Zach Greene (69)

Analysis: Obviously some need here. Sowell and Greene will be solid CB's in a few seasons but we need playmakers. We'll look for some diamond in the roughs here and see what shakes out. Upgrades at FS and SS are musts though.

Special Teams

K: Jr Nick Maggio (80)
P: Rs Jr Kevin Jones (86)

Analysis: If the right K or P is interested we'll go for them, otherwise we'll be fine for another season with these two.

Week 1: Duke (0-0) vs Western Kentucky (0-0)

Preview

OFFENSE: Duke (C) - WKU (D)
DEFENSE: Duke (C) - WKU (D+)
OVERALL: Duke (C+) - WKU (D+)

Analysis: Should be a game we handle with relative ease. WKU isn't that good and while we don't have that much talent, the talent we do have is far superior then the talent WKU has.

Duke 38 - WKU - 10

The run game overcomes a 5 INT game from Thaddeus Lewis, who was only 12 for 31 with no TD and the aforementioned 5 INT. Thankfully Requan Boyette was on point with 26 carries for 170 yards and 3 TD. Sophmore WR Johnny Williams was our only good WR today with 7 catches for 114 yards.

Defensively, MLB Vincent Rey had 6 tackles, 4 TFL and 2 sacks and ROLB Damian Thornton took back a fumble 54 yards for a TD.

About what I expected, sans the horrible QB play from Lewis.

Week 1 Recruiting Update

We offer schollies to a lot of 2* guys with interest. We just need bodies but that doesn't stop us from going after some big fish early with the hope of reeling them by applying a full court press. We need some elite talent and we hope some smart kid out there loves the idea of a great school and early PT.

Preview

OFFENSE: Duke (C) - Army (D)
DEFENSE: Duke (C) - Army (D)
OVERALL: Duke (C+) - Army (D)

Analysis: Another game that should end in an easy Duke victory. Army just doesn't have the talent to keep up with our athletes. Army is coming off a 37-34 OT loss to EMU. If they can't beat EMU I cannot see them beating us.

Duke 31 - Army 28

Yeesh. Lewis was 18-39 for 221 yards with a TD and an INT, but that was about all we could do in the air. Meanwhile Army did a number on our run game, holding us to just over 100 yards, but Boyette would score once and Hollingsworth would punch in 2, including the game winning TD from 3 yards out with just 4 seconds left!

Defensively Vincent Rey had 7 tackles and 3 TFL, and Damian Thornton added 7 tackles of his own and a TFL, but the big problem was Army WR Hunter, who had an astounding 15 catches for 255 yards and 4 TD, including 2 TD in the 4th to momentarily give Army the lead.

We're going to get bombed next week in Kansas vs Todd Reesing.

We finished handing out schollies to guys on our board and we make a noticeable jump with a lot of kids, most the main three of interest are a 4* MLB, 4* OG and 4* CB. We are top 5 for all three and schedule the MLB and OG for week 4 visits vs Syracuse.

Preview

OFFENSE: Duke (C) - Kansas (B+)
DEFENSE: Duke (C+) - Kansas (B-)
OVERALL: Duke (C) - Kansas (B)

Analysis: This should be ugly. Kansas has put 94 total points through two games, and though it isn't vs top talent, they have a great QB - WR combo in Reesing - Briscoe. This is probably going to be very, very ugly unless we can show we can run the ball with authority and control the clock.

Kansas 28 - Duke 17

We actually lead 17-14 at the half, but Reesing would throw two TD's in the second half and the KU defense would shut us down totally to preserve them the 28-17 win.

Thaddeus Lewis improved going 19-37 for 303 yards with 2 TD and 2 INT, his best game of the year by far. Hollingsworth, playing for Boyette who must've been hurt, runs 23 times for 73 yars. Varner and Huffman have huge days catching the ball. Varner had 7 for 115 and a score, while Huffman had 6 for 148.

Defensively, Rey had 10 tackles. Thornton added 8 and a sack, and Hatcher had 6, plus 2 TFL and a sack.

Meanwhile Boyette isn't on the injury report so he musta went down at the beginning of the game with a minor injury.

Week 4: Duke (2-1) vs Syracuse (0-3)

Preview

OFFENSE: Duke (C) - Syarcuse (C-)
DEFENSE: Duke (C+) - Syracuse (C-)
OVERALL: Duke (C) - Syracuse (C-)

Analysis Syracuse has played a tough schedule already, with two ranked teams on it, Minnesota and PSU, plus a 3-0 Northwestern team. We have more talent but they are not a push over. I still think we ought to win but it'll be close.

Duke 30 - Syracuse 27

As I expected, it was a war. We were deadlocked at 27 going into the 4th when we managed to put a nice drive together and drain a lot of clock before Maggio hit a 42 yard FG with 21 seconds left to give us the 30-27 win.

Lewis was 20/39 for 295 yards with 2 TD - 2 INT. Meanwhile our run game scuffled with Boyette getting injured early again. Hollingsworth lead our team with 36 yards on 11 carries. Lewis did chip in a rushing TD though.

Varner had another big game with 6 grabs for 126 yards and a TD, while Huffman also had a TD grab.

Defensively Okpokowuruk had a huge game with 10 tackles, 4 TFL and 2 sacks. Oglesby had 9 tackles, 2 TFL and a sack, Oghobaase had 7 tackles and 1 TFL. A nice effort from the DL.

Oof - bad news checking the injury report after the game. Thaddeus Lewis has a sprained back and will be out for 12 weeks. This is not going to be good at all.

Our other visits garner Bs' and we move up some but not near the top 3 for the OG and MLB we are chasing. We still have a chance with them but it's not looking too great.

Preview

OFFENSE: Duke (C) - VT (B)
DEFENSE: Duke (C+) - VT (A)
OVERALL: Duke (C) - VT (B+)

Analysis: I don't care that VT is 1-3 and this is at home. We are not going to win this game. VT is not scoring at all but their defense is playing well. We're banged up and just don't have the tools to get it done.

Va Tech 38 - Duke 9

All you need to know is we had 197 yards of total offense. Renfree, our new QB with Lewis out, was 9 of 20 for 69 yards. Hollingsworth had 64 yards on the ground but fumbled twice. With him playing so much since Boyette is banged up, True Frosh Desmond Scott will now be our #2 back.

Our DL did well again, stat wise anyway, but Tyrod Taylor threw for 341 yards and 5 TD so the pressure was not there.

Back to the drawing board I suppose.

Preview

OFFENSE: Duke (C) - NC State (B)
DEFENSE: Duke (C+) - NC State (B)
OVERALL: Duke (C) - NC State (B)

Analysis: This is a game I know we can win but we have to play limited turnover ball which is still a problem for us. NC State is 6th in the Nation in rushing, but on D that's our strength. If our DL can make plays and our offense can chew up clock and score when we need it, we'll be okay.

Duke 10 - NC State 0

It was a game that set offense back to the stone ages, as Duke and NC State combined for under 400 yards of total offense, but Duke scored when they needed it to pitch a shutout on the road!

Renfree was 10/29 for 82 yards and Boyette had just 72 yards on 28 carries, but he scored once to make the difference.

Damian Thornton was the team MVP with 12 tackles (7 TFL) and 3 sacks, while Ogohobaase was a menace with 7 tackles (2 TFL).

It was ugly as hell but it was a crucial win!

Week 8: Duke (4-2) vs #24 Maryland (6-1)

Preview

OFFENSE: Duke (C) - Maryland (B)
DEFENSE: Duke (C+) - Maryland (B)
OVERALL: Duke (C) - Maryland (B)

Analysis: Maryland is playing well but their biggest win is vs an unranked Clemson team. Their only team vs a ranked team this year was vs #25 Rutgers and they lost 30-6. We can win but it'll take another all around good effort.

Maryland 17 - Duke 16

We had a chance to tie the game late but failed on the 2PC and we couldn't get another chance. A shame as we battled hard but to no avail.

Renfree finally had a good game, with 217 yards and 2 TD while Boyette had a measly 58 yards on 19 carries. We need a better balance but it is what it is right now.

Oghobaase was a monster on D with 13 tackles (2 TFL) and a sack from his DT position. Thornton also added 8 tackles (2 TFL) and a sack as he continues to play well.

That said we lose a tough one and face a must win next week vs UVA if we want any chance of bowling.

Week 9: Duke (4-3) @ Virginia (4-3)

Preview

OFFENSE: Duke (C) - UVA (B-)
DEFENSE: Duke (C+) - UVA (B)
OVERALL: Duke (C) - UVA (B)

Analysis: UVA is very beatable but we have to work for it. We're playing far better but not doing enough to win, while UVA has lost two in a row. We need to keep running it as UVA struggles vs the run. If we do that I think we win by two scores.

Duke 13 - UVA 12

Two fourth quarter TD's from Renfree give us a huge win vs Virginia and gives us a chance to go bowling with one more win.

Renfree was bad for 3 quarters but nearly flawless in the 4th. He only had 160 yards with 2 TD - 2 INT, but his 2 TD came in the final quarter of play when we needed them most. Our run game was destroyed by a fired up UVA front 7, holding us to just 75 total yards, but when we needed the yards we got them.

The other big story was our D holding UVA to just 4 FG. Oglesby had 10 tackles (3 TFL) and a sack, while Oghobaase was a machine with 8 more tackles (1 TFL) and Thornton had 7 tackles himself.

We're now 5-3 with a tough stretch of games upcoming but all we need is just one win and we should be bowling somewhere.

Preview

OFFENSE: Duke (C) - NC (B)
DEFENSE: Duke (C+) - NC (A)
OVERALL: Duke (C) - NC (B+)

Analysis: This won't be pretty. NC has a balanced offense that has done some damage to good teams, and their D is top 25 in every major defensive category. We just have to grin and bear it today.

NC 24 - Duke 20

Oof, our string of close losses continues as we give up a 4th quarter TD to NC to give them the lead and our offense just couldn't get it done. We held the lead the entire game, scoring 20 first half point, but NC's defense adjusted and shut us down totally in the second half.

Renfree had 215 yards with a TD and 2 INT. He wasn't very good but he did what he could vs a stingy defense. Boyette ran 18 times for 38 yards but did score both TD's, one through the air.

Our D battled but it wasn't enough. Okpokowuruk was our best player with 5 tackles (2 TFL) and a sack.

We played hard vs our rival but we come up short.

OFFENSE: Duke (C) - GT (B)
DEFENSE: Duke (C+) - GT (B+)
OVERALL: Duke (C) - GT (B+)

Analysis: GT has struggled but they can play. They're #1 in rush offense and #5 in turnover differential. Our D's strength is stuffing the run but we don't cause turnovers and we ourselves turn it over often. We're playing better but this won't be our elusive 6th win.

GT 52 - Duke 0

Yeesh. Renfree was 5-26 for 35 yards and 2 INT which sums up our offense on the day totally. Boyette had 51 yards on 16 carries, but it didn't matter as this was over by the end of the first quarter.

Damian Thornton lead our D with 10 tackles (2 TFL) but that was about it. Just a horrible, ugly, embarrassing performance.

OFFENSE: Duke (C) - Miami (B+)
DEFENSE: Duke (C+) - Miami (B+)
OVERALL: Duke (C) - Miami (B+)

Analysis: Much like in real life, Miami is loaded with talent but can't seem to do much with it. Their offense is ranked in 74th or lower in every major category but their total D is 12th in the Nation. I think we can play with them but I don't see much for us offensively to think we can win.

Miami 37 - Duke 23

Renfree had 280 yards and a 72 yard TD pass, but Jacory Harris had 321 yards and 4 TD for the Canes who rolled us over, despite a close score. Boyette had 69 yards but was nothing special, and that was about it for our offense.

On defense Oghobaase was great with 10 tackles (2 TFL) and the freshman John Drew had his best game ever with 7 tackles (4 TFL) and 2 sacks.

That said, we go into a rivalry game vs Wake next week with a potential bowl birth on the line. Talk about a big one.

Preview

OFFENSE: Duke (C) - WF (B-)
DEFENSE: Duke (C+) - WF (B)
OVERLAL: Duke (C) - WF (B)

Analysis: It's hard to say how a rivalry game will shake out. WF is the better team but it's not as night and day as it was vs Miami and Georgia Tech our last two games. At home, on Senior Day, I think we pull it out.

Duke 24 - Wake Forest 20

It took a 10 point fourth quarter, but lead on the back of Renfree who had his best game of his career, we dispatch of Wake 24-20 and now wait to see if just maybe we make a bowl game.

Renfree wasn't flashy, just good, going 16/21 for 145 yards with 3 TD and 1 INT. He moved the chains when they needed moving, and Boyette added 98 yards on the ground to give us the tough yards when we needed them.

On D Oghobaase's last game as a Blue Devil was sensational, with 7 tackles (3 TFL), a sack and a FF. Vincent Rey also had 8 tackles (3 TFL) and a sack for us.

Now with the season complete we sit back and see what the future holds.

Wake Forest is our rivalry game?!! Are you kidding me?

6 wins with a team that probably hasn't won 6 games total in the last 10 years is all well and good, but you lost to UNC. We alumni want you fired!

Speaking of UNC, I got home Friday night to find out that my 3 yo daughter has named her stuffed cat "Carolina." Dad is not happy.

Dukes Goes Bowling!

The Duke Blue Devils football program ended their bowl drought today when it was announced they will play the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Emerald Bowl. It is a significant step in the right direction for Duke coach David Cutcliffes program. Now all they need is to win the game and take a small step and make it a big one.

Emerald Bowl: Duke (6-6) vs Arizona State (7-5)

Preview

OFFENSE: Duke (C) - ASU (B)
DEFENSE: Duke (C+) - ASU (B+)
OVERALL: Duke (C) - ASU (B)

Analysis: ASU is a good team who's deal makes plays, but they're beatable. We haven't done much with the ball in our ends but our D has played well outside of a few big games against us. I think ASU wins but I don't think it's a blowout.

ASU 24- Duke 16

ASU thrives on a 21 point fourth quarter, including the game winning TD with 4 seconds left, from 23 yards out, to give us a gut wrenching loss at the Emerald Bowl.

Thaddeus Lewis, playing his final game after being 100% finally, was 20/36 for 142 yards with a TD. Not a bad effort to end on but not good enough. Boyette had 88 yards on 27 carries to end his career, which again, was okay but not good enough.

On D Vincent Rey was a monster with 11 tackles (3 TFL) and a sack, while Oghobaase's final game saw him have 5 tackles (2 TFL) and a sack. The D played hard but was worn down as ASU had the ball nearly 40 minutes.

A tough way to end but the building blocks are slowly being put in place.
