Haven't seen as many people posting updates in here as of late ... wondering how everyone is doing with their fitness goals?

Ran 8 minute mile pace on the treadmill yesterday for 3.5 miles. Continuing to work towards the 7 minute mile pace, and yesterday makes me think that 7:45 should be doable this month. I'll be surprised if I do better than that, but I've got more hope for achieving that now than I did 48 hours ago.

Off to get our butts handed to us in Dodgeball. My early thoughts on it are that I'm not getting quite as much exercise as I had hoped. We've got enough guys playing that I'm only in every other game and parts of those games involve sitting when I'm drilled or someone catches my throws. I'm having fun playing the game, and it is a different type of workout, but it isn't even in same ballpark as the exercise I get from soccer in spring/fall.

Badly -- going in reverse. Good news I ate well for the first time in almost a month yesterday, so hopefully I'll be back on track enough for an update next week.

I had a major setback in the fall, but I'm back on track now.

In October, I threw out my back working out and couldn't exercise vigorously for about 2 months. That was bad enough.

What was worse was my appetite. I'm normally hungrier as the weather turns colder - I swear my body thinks it's going into hibernation or something. So I ate and ate and ate. I just couldn't cram enough down the ole' pie hole.

I got back to working out hard in January and finally weighed myself the other day. I knew the results would be bad and they were as I feared. I gained 23 pounds in 3 1/2 months. That's tough to do for any normal person, but I managed to do it without even trying. #$#!$# genetics.

So I'm now using MyFitnessPal to track what I eat. So far it's working - I'm controlling what I'm eating and taking in only about 1,800 calories per day. Given my weight and workouts, that's enough to lose more than a pound per week. I'm a week and a half into it and I'm down 3 1/2 pounds, so things are moving in the right direction.

Today's weight: 220.5

Short term goals:
- Get below 215 before mid-March, when the weather warms up enough to jog in the morning
- Get below 210 before my first projected 5k in mid-April

Long term goals:
- Get below 203 before my 3rd projected 5k in mid-June
- Get below 200 before I hike up Half Dome in mid-July

All are very doable...

Bad. Epic fail on my part. I let some things get to me and I ran back to my comfort food. Also stopped working out due to feeling really tired all the time plus having migraines every other day.

So yeah, not good.

Brian, I weighed 275 around this time last year...in January, I weighed 185 (though an illness and work have kept me from the gym lately, which annoys me to no end). Keep at it...you can get to where you want to be.

I've had a horror show couple of days, seeing my weight jump up from 164.7 to 170.2. I haven't gotten enough exercise and have been putting in some long hours in last week since my company got acquired, but I'm still very surprised by numbers on scale the last two days. Going to have to really work hard over the next 10 days to get the weight back off by the end of the month. I've got no intention whatsoever of being over 165 at the end of this month.

Calorie counts the last couple of weeks:

Date - Calories Consumed (Calorie Surplus which includes workout calories)

2/7 - 1,849 (+471)
2/8 - 1,694 (+476)
2/9 - 1,617 (+783)
2/10 - 1,809 (+361)
2/11 - 1,805 (+465)
2/12 - 1,888 (-18)
2/13 - 1,712 (+508)
2/15 - 1,794 (+496)
2/16 - 1,832 (+356)
2/17 - 1,840 (+406)
2/18 - 1,670 (+920)
2/19 - 1,834 (+6)
2/20 - 1,788 (+402)

According to MyFitnessPal, I'm supposed to maintain 1,840 (that number was 1,860 until 2/18) calories per week. So I've been under that all but 1 day in the last two weeks. The larger plus numbers include my workout calories, which I'm allowed to eat but not doing so at this time, hence the large calorie surplus numbers.

It seems to be working. I'm down 6 pounds since the start of this month.

Haven't been doing a whole lot the last few weeks but happy to see numbers not going back up anymore. I've been eating better in the past week, but a couple nights where dad needed help in the middle of the night after I taken an ambien has been hell on my sleep schedule and on a normal day I often don't overcome the inertia of lazy to go exercise. I *really* need to get going w/ exercising better/more, because I kinda feel like crap and I know that fixes it!

Went on vacation to Italy for a week. Given we (exclusively) walked around Rome for the entire week, but still...man was I PUMPED when I got home and saw this morning that I had gained 0.0lbs over the week.

Great feeling.

Hmm...either I lost weight on vacation and was weighing in heavy yesterday, or this cold is really purging my body of a lot of weight.

175.2 this morning. Weighed myself twice, once before and once after my shower because I couldn't believe it.

*cough* 175.0

Weird. My metabolism has become self-perpetuating. I haven't exercised since I left (minus the walking around Rome all day...so yes that counts), and now I haven't since I got back due to this cold I'm fighting (hard to exercise with 30 pounds of snot in your nose).

Calorie Counts from 2/21 to 2/29 (+numbers include workout calories):

2/21 - 1,825 (+365)
2/22 - 1,389 (+1051)
2/23 - 1,683 (+503)
2/24 - 1,726 (+514)
2/25 - 1,692 (+648)
2/26 - 1,913 (-73)
2/27 - 1,678 (+487)
2/28 - 1,537 (+628)
2/29 - 1,587 (+253)

So I made it through February exceeding my caloric recommendations only twice and never by more than 100 calories. I lost 6.5 pounds during the month, which is a little lower than I was hoping for, but it's going the right direction. I won't complain about 6 or 7 pounds per month so long as that continues for the next couple of months.

And it begins

2/27 - 233 (Heaviest I have ever been)
3/5 - 227

Currently I am doing the UFC Trainer for Kinect, plus beginning to eat right. I am slowly weening myself off of soda and going for straight water or the ZERO Half / Half Arizona.

I am an out of shape punk that is getting winded and sweaty during the warm up for the trainer, I have never realized how out of shape I was. I need to get some new running shoes and stuff so I can begin running outside to build the cardio. Sept is only 6 months away and I need to be able to run a 5K obstacle course by then.

Well, I also had no idea I would both get sick and be gimpy enough to not exercise over the last week of the month, which is usually "closing time" for me as I look to hit a number. I finished out at 165.7, which was disappointing at the time. But overall, I made pretty dramatic transformations in my overall appearance and my eating habits:
- lost 3-4 inches off my waist
- lost 23 pounds
- much better shape than I was in, although still not anything to brag about. But no longer a couch potato
- eating habits that should help make the weight loss sustainable, since it wasn't predicated on any kind of fads, rapid weight loss, or denying myself things that I will likely revert back to (with possible exception of portion sizes)

Fitness goals for this year involve running two 5Ks, posting a seven minute mile pace for the 2nd one, and putting on a little bit of muscle weight. I need to make that last goal more measurable, and have more of an action plan attached to it. Will work on doing that this month.

1st Week of March Calorie Counts

3/01 - 1,461 (+682)
3/02 - 1,807 (+613)
3/03 - 1,485 (+335)
3/04 - 2,580 (+999)
3/05 - 1,557 (+600)
3/06 - 1,750 (+70)
3/07 - 1,607 (+563)

Some of ya'll are looking at that 3/04 number and wondering what the hell happened. Simply put, I rewarded myself after a 3 1/2 hour hike with a large, yummy pizza. That's how I ate that much and still was under by 1,000 calories for that day.

The good news - I'm down 10 pounds in 5 weeks and looking at my daily calorie counts, it's getting easier and easier for me to eat 1,800 calories or less.

So I basically stopped checking all of my peripherals (BMI etc.) during my weight loss, so here's the tally at the moment, where my weight seems to have stabilized (to give me new motivation).

I'll update later with what my starting #s were to give a sense of the change.

As of this morning:

Weight: 177.4
BMI: 24.1
Body Fat %: Forget, will update later.
Skeletal Muscle %: 35.3
Visceral Fat: 7
Body Age: 46

I know my visceral fat level has dropped massively (it was at least 14 when I started), which is huge for my long-term health.

I feel like my BMI has too (don't recall where it started at), which is also great for my overall health.

My body age has come down at least like...30 years, but it's still above where I'd like it. Not quite sure what that measures and takes into account, but I'd like it to be closer to 32 (my actual age).

I'm pleased to see my skeletal muscle % in what is considered "normal" range, and has actually increased.

My new goal is to get my BMI/Body Fat Percentage a bit lower. Take my BMI for example, rather than being 24.1 and "on the verge" of being overweight, I'd like to see it closer to 20 or 21.

I figure that will drive down my "Body Age" calculation closer to what it actually is, and get rid of the last vestiges of my tummy.

So that's my new goal.

Umm... Your BMI is a function only of height and weight. Because your height is constant, it is just another way of measuring your weight.

Edit: also, its ranges (for "overweight", etc.) are, I believe, generally thought to be worthless.

Yeah - I know BMI is out-of-favor. That's why I would rather talk about % Body Fat, but I couldn't remember that off the top of my head when I posted, hence why I mentioned the BMI.

Not really worried what the BMI is, more worried about driving the % body fat down.

Still making progress and no longer counting pounds, as such, but still a little ways to go in terms of the ol' belly. I think there were a few steps backwards here over the past couple weeks but will have an opportunity to check in this weekend. Overall the increased exercise and the food rules--no "diet" but rather moderate portions and no "comfort" snacking--have been reasonably successful and seem sustainable. I'm better able to predict now when snacking will feel "bad" later (because I'm over-full).

Saw my Dr today, stagnant weight for the last couple months could be better. Blood pressure though was 115/73, A1C is the lowest its been in years and my fasting blood sugar is good. A1C is a measure of blood sugar over the last few months.

In fact, those numbers were a little lower than they need to be. I take two medications to help control blood sugar. With my results today my doctor has told me that I can stop taking the stronger of the two blood sugar medicines (glimiperide for those who know about such things. I had started on 4mg/day initially, dropped to 2mg/day last year sometime). WOOHOO.

Getting off that medicine should help with the weight loss too. After even minimal-moderate exercise I would often notice my blood sugar tank on me and it was making it hard to control things and get into an exercise routine. The doctor said that problem should improve (and maybe even go away) once I get off this medicine.

Good to hear, Radii. Kicking medication definitely sounds like progress.

I've been a little less motivated this month. Little too much beer, little too little accountability in terms of tracking my progress. I've gotten some good exercise in, but since I haven't tracked it I can't really effectively measure it against past months. I've more or less decided to give myself a pass for the remainder of the month and then resume my spreadsheet life in April.

Still targeting an April 5K run, along with the start of outdoor soccer at the end of April. So I won't be completely slacking ... but I definitely know that I see better results when I measure them.

I have been battling illness/issues for the past couple of weeks which has put me down. I have been sick a lot lately and I am contributing that to my health.

I begin a regimented diet plan that a bunch of my friends are on with shakes, supplements, meals and such next week. my goal is to drop 10 to 15 pounds in the first month (Which I can do by just giving up the soda I have been drinking).

I need motivation and I know proper health should be enough but I think it comes down to I worked out everyday for 6 years with High School and College football and it wore me out on it.

Motivations right now
  • Get down to 185 lbs
  • Run Zombie 5K on Sept 1
  • Playing Softball this summer / fall
  • Hiking WNY all summer / fall
  • Get in proper shape to join the Buffalo Rugby Club and play.
Need to stick to this...

It's been close to a month since I updated this thread, but I've been doing quite well. Here's the calorie counts since my last update:
(numbers in parenthesis are the calorie deficit or overage for the day, includes workout calories)

3/08 - 1,577 (+393)
3/09 - 1,729 (+91)

I had a couple of "big food" days, but I balanced those with hiking or other long (2+ hours) workouts. As it stands, I'm down about 17 pounds in 2 months and the trend hasn't flattened out at all. The short-term goal is looming - I gained 23 pounds in 3 months when I hurt my back and I want to see if I can take it off as fast as it went on. So I'm approaching the finish line on that goal and it's probably reachable. The long term goal is still another 22-23 pounds away, which would put me at the same weight I was when I was 22. I'm trying to get close by mid-July, since that's the big Half Dome hike and every pound I don't weigh is one less I have to carry up that damn rock.

And we are off...my shakes and supplements arrive today. However, the contest we are all doing begins today.

Starting Weight: 228 Pounds (gain of 5 since last weigh in)

Total Inches: 360 Inches

The inches measurement covers Neck, Chest, Arms, Waist, Abs, Butt, Thighs and Calves.

The goal for me in this contest (2 week intervals) is to lose at least 15 pounds in the 2 weeks and Total inches I would say would be close to 15 to 20 inches. I would be happy just to lose 2 inches off of the waistline

I am only allowed to Weigh myself every few days, so weigh ins are days 1,5,9,12,14. Measurements will be on Days 12 and 14.

This is my first step towards being healthy....Here We Go!

Good luck!

I don't measure inches, because I'm adding them in some areas while removing them from others.

Thanks!

Normally I wouldn't because of where I am looking to add muscle, but right now it's about getting back into shape and losing the weight where it is showing the most...Neck, Waist, Ab and such...I think with the workout routine I am doing, It will keep the Arms, Legs and Chest the same, it might grow them, but I would be happy if I can get rid of the flab and bring out the muscle again.

A lot of you guys have done an awesome job. Keep it up.

Let me tell you guys my story and maybe you have some advice that I haven't gotten before because I need some help.

In September 2009, my company started a Biggest Loser contest. At the start of the competition, I weighed 285. At 6'3, that's not huge, but is it still fat as hell, right?

I was hell bent on winning this contest. I knew that I needed to lose weight and I am competitive to a fault. I have to win at everything. Even the drive home is a contest for me every day. Yeah, it is that bad.

Anyway, I needed up losing 60 lbs in 3 months and won the contest with a finishing weight of 223.8 for the final weigh in that December.

Pretty much as soon as the contest was over, I quit working out 6 days a week, started eating crap again.

Today, my weight is staying in the 255-260 range. I go in waves where I'll eat well and exercise for 2 weeks then my knees will start to hurt and I'll quit.

I think about this crap every single day. I tell myself every day that today is the day that I turn it all back around and I never do.

Have any of you guys gone through anything similar?

I weighed myself the other day and saw that my weight is back up right where it was when I started this contest 2.5 years ago. It is time to get this shit back under control and get healthy again. I decided last night that I would use my initial weight loss as a motivator. I lost 61.2 lbs in 83 days the first time. I am going to try to lose more weight in the same amount of time, starting tomorrow.

It's an official weigh in day.

So I stand on the scale, look down and see....

219!

I have dropped 9 pounds in 4 days.

Now the shakes are awesome, taste like Vanilla Ice Cream and I just add things to it, no more than a cup of fruit...or I add a little cinnamon or a splash of OJ to give it the flavor that is desired for the day.

So I went Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday all healthy eating days with the shakes for AM, Lunch...healthy snacks in between and a 600 - 800 calorie dinner.

I am doing a morning workout routine as well.

I have also ditched the Soda cold turkey and I am pounding the water...80 oz or more a day...

Yesterday was a cleanse day, I had a cleansing juice, 4 oz every 4 hours, with same snacks in between...nothing else...want to know what, I feel 10x better this morning than I have all week and I wasn't hungry...although the cravings came out towards the end, almost like an addict with detox...

I knew weight was going because my dress slacks were a little loose yesterday..that to me is a good sign.

Now some changes: Some of the health related things I have experienced over the past year, have disappeared within this week. I am getting 7 - 8 hours of sleep, no help needed (I am on Ambien for sleep), and I have renewed energy and to me, the biggest thing...I am typically a happy guy...but I am happier...this is pretty freaking cool feelings...liking it so far.

It only took me about 11.5 months to follow through on this, but I finally joined a gym tonight.

Weighed 284.5 on Thursday and I am down to 279.0 this morning.

The worst part about doing this again is getting my body used to eating less calories every day. I'm targeting 1800 calories per day and I was probably eating 3000.

So far so good. I know how to lose weight. Getting myself to do it is the hard part. 180-200 is the goal since the doctor says that's my healthy weight range.

Drink lots of water/tea. At first it doesn't help much but eventually that helps fill you up to avoid snacking.

I lost 6 pounds in the first week. I haven't been working out like I want to. I'm finding excuses not to work out. I have been able to maintain the 1800 calorie diet every day, so I have that going for me.

Keep it up!

I use the MyFitnessPal app to track my calories. I'm allowed about 1,820 a day...oops, now 1,760 with today's weigh-in. Using that I've managed to drop 20 pounds in 2 1/2 months.

Down to 205 today. I have maybe 20 pounds left to lose and that might be about it.

So I've been pretty lax over the last month and a half with my diet/fitness:
- back to drinking 1 can/day of Coke
- not doing the regular running that I need to with weather getting better, nor grinding away on treadmill like I was over the winter
- not tracking my food/booze/sleep like I had been

I've settled in around 167-168 and that is good insofar as it is a (sometimes much) lighter "steady" weight than what I've experienced over the past 15 years. But I think it is time to get started on the next phase of fitness/weight management.

My wife has been doing a good job with her own diet/fitness over the past couple of months. Yesterday I challenged her and I to lose a combined 10 pounds, which would put our combined weight lower than it has been at any time in our 15 years together. That should be split evenly between the two of us, but that would call for me settling in around 163. I hit that weight for a day or two late last year, but was not able to sustain that number.

Changes required:
1.) Get back to tracking everything in Excel
2.) Between soccer (spring sport), running, and push-ups I should get some exercise every day. I need to institute some kind of penalty for a day where I get no exercise just to give myself a small motivation boost ... will likely tie it to some kind of household chore where my wife will be delighted to hold me accountable
3.) Better sleep schedule, which ties into some larger time management skills
4.) Booze - I've decided that I won't buy any beer for the house. Will still have it at social events, but I think these are easy calories for me to give up. Additionally, I need to restrict wine consumption to weekends or special occasions, without going out of my way to make something like "every other Tuesday" fit that criteria.

We'll see how this goes. It isn't a major weight loss goal like last year, but I would be pleased if I can transition to better fitness habits. Although I've lost weight over the last 13 months, I don't think my relative fitness level compared to last year reflects someone who has shed 20+ pounds.

Alright!

So in 12 days time I am down 13 lbs and 10 inches total. With some of the light workouts I have done, I have seen the muscle come back in the upper body and the lower body, but I have lost an inch on the neck, abdomen, waist and ass....I am not complaining...

3 days off of the diet (But still eating healthy) and then back onto it

Beginning the Gym workouts this week...I need to build up the cardio endurance and some muscle mass...I hate pushups more than anything, so I will use the weights to replace them...situps, I can't avoid but I can use a few different things with them...

Pushups are good for you - do 'em. Grats on the weight loss!

I'm down 20lbs since Feb 1 and want to drop another 20. Overall, from two years ago, I'm down 60 and gunning for 80.

I've lost thirty pounds and gotten to within about 12 pounds of my goal but have been stuck there for three months now. Anyone have any insight on getting past the last plateau?

I used an elliptical machine today. Damn, that's a weird feeling machine. It took me about 10 minutes to get halfway comfortable on it.

I slacked the last week and I am back at it this week...

After going strong and eating healthy for 3 weeks straight, it was weird to see my body rejecting the fat greasy foods I was pumping it full of before....It's a nice feeling though to know your body says "Hey, I liked the good stuff, not this crap!"

Mondays are no longer gym days for me as I am starting to play softball and games and practices are on Monday nights.

That means Tues - Friday now (I used to go, M, Tues, Thurs, Fri)

My only suggestion is to check your caloric intake. 2,000 calories per day may have been enough to lose 30, but you may have to drop more to get down that last 12.

It's the end of April, so I'm officially down 23 pounds in 3 months at 202 pounds. I'd like to lose another 17 or so over the next 3. I'm back to my lowest weight last year and closing in on hitting my lowest weight in the last 20 years.

For the first time in 10-15 years, I weigh under 200 pounds this morning!

So I'm now down 26 in a bit over 3 months and a total of 65 from a couple of years ago.
