Looks like Young may stay at Texas
http://x.go.com/cgi/x.pl?goto=http:/...010413&srvc=sz
Just curious as to what everyone thinks, looking at it in his light....It's definately a smart thing to do.

nah - he'd probably be a top 10 pick, and its not worth turning down that much money unless you've got insurance coverage. Who knows what could happen in a year ?

From the article.....That makes it interesting to me....do you think one of the top 10 would drop the money down on him?

Tough call. I say he is ready, but I can see the reasoning behind waiting. He's not going top 5 this year, and he might have a shot at number 1 next year.

I dunno - the Raiders, for example, look like they could use a QB - and similar things could be said for the Jets and/or the Lions - we don't know for certain one way or another. I think Young might not be top 5, but he would be top 10.

I would wait. There's a lot of qbs in the draft this year and not a lot of teams looking for one.

There is some big number differences between number 3, say, and number 9. Personally, I'd rather have him over Leinhart, but I doubt the Saints will think the same way. They could trade down a couple of spots and then take him at 5 or something. That's a big risk for him to take, though. |

I think for the Saints to take him, they would be getting another Brooks. Don't get me wrong, Young I feel is better, but right now, a scrambling QB with a decent arm is what they already have....... Next year he will compete with Quinn for top QB, unless someone else steps up....

I'm noticing most mock drafts actually do have him going top 5 (if included). They have the Titans or the Jets taking him. The Jets might, but the Titans have spent money keeping Volek around as the future starter. I don't think they are looking at QB at all.

I think it's a question of whether he wants to be a 5-10 pick this year or have a shot at being the number 1 or 2 next year. As long as he stays healthy, another year in school should really help him. I think right now a lot of teams would be worried that he's the second coming of Akili Smith.
Of course, Texas could stomp on USC and he could totally outplay Leinart tonight, in which case he would have a pretty good case for being the top quarterback in the draft.

You hit on the central determining factor. Right or wrong, how Young plays in the championship game will determine if he goes or not. You can easily say that Vick's performance in the national championship game against FSU (even though they lost big) was his true springboard into the national conciousness.

I'm not sure, but if he is, he better not even think about it. Especially after the stunts he pulled in his bowl game. He's gotta rehabilitate that image.

Just checked, he's 21 and a junior, which I think means he could come out if he wanted. I suspect he will.

I still think Young bolts. If Texas gets beat tonight, there's probably a chance that he comes back. But I agree with ISiddiqui and Ryche. Play well tonight and win a National Championship, and you'd be crazy not to go.
Of course, I still think Leinart was crazy not to go, and that's regardless of whether USC makes it a 3-peat tonight. As an OU fan, I hope Young goes of course. If he's gone, OU has a decent, if not a good, chance of beating Texas next year and getting back to the top of the Big 12. If he's back, I can't see OU winning the RRS. |

The ONLY reason I would want to see VY go pro, would be to stop the inevitable ESPN love-fest this time next year, when Texas is at a 32 or 33 game win streak, and the daily polls asking if this Texas team could have helped Napolean beat Wellington at Waterloo, or if Texas could have won the Battle of Hastings in 1066, or if the team could have circumnavigated the globe faster than Magellan.

Speaking as an Ohio State fan, the only chance we have of winning in Austin next year is for Vince to leave. So, please, win Texas. Win win win and send Vince out on a high note.

I think he just hit Chris Simms riding a bike. And a side note to all Ohio State fans. If you are old enough or like football history, the same thing was said about Archie Griffin. And he didn't go. He stayed and stayed, and from what I hear, he still there today.

Two points probably lost in the Rose Bowl thread, and a third added:
1) Vince Young is the King of College Football. He is better football player than Reggie Bush is. He looks like a man among boys. 2) The calls after they got down to the 15 yard line told me all I need to know about VY going into the NFL. He has already proven he could not be stopped from going in at that distance with his legs, they still call two risky pass plays. Both were exactly were they should be to have any shot of being caught. The guy reads defenses, throws hard, throws accurately, and is big enough and fast enough to make the first guy miss at any level. 3) I'll say this as I said about Leinhart last year: another year of college can only hurt him. He has already developed into the best he can be at this level, and staying another year is going to develop/reinforce bad habits. He needs to face bigger/faster players and be forced to throw the ball even faster on his reads, and he is not going to get that in college. Go now, Vince. |

Vince should definitely leave, if you go out now you have gone out as good as anyone possibly could.
If he does come back, I'd better hear about him having some fat insurance policy. But i'm not sure what his/his family's financial situation is. |

Something that hasn't been brought up yet is that no Senior to be has gone pro for a Mack Brown coached team. At NC Julius Peppers stayed for his senior year, and every standout so far at UT has stayed, starting with Ricky Williams. Don't think the Heisman isn't a big enough pull to keep VY in Austin.

I think he leaves. There was an awful lot of "I need to sit down with my family and decide what the best thing to do is" just now when being interviewed. I think it means he basically already knows what he should do.

Ummmm...Brown was coach at Texas when Peppers was a senior in '01. But, it's a good point that can't be ignored. Personally, if I were him, I would leave if I thought it would be hard to improve my draft position (plus money now is worth more than money later). There's plenty of things to prove in the NFL...many more than the ability to win the Heisman (which isn't a lock with Peterson and others ready to be the best). However, different things drive different people. |

He will not, I repeat, will not make that many pro LB's miss on the first attempt. He has great college running skills for a QB, but will not get away with half of what USC allowed in the pros. Don't mean to take anything from his performance, but USC's defense had no game plan for him what so ever and could tackle anyone today. |

Nope, pro LBs never miss on the first attempt against a running QB.

D'oh, that's right. Peppers was in the last class he recruited at NC. After some checking, the only player he's lost early to the NFL was Natrone Means.

Listening to Vince last night, I think he is going to go pro. I think he should go pro. I still think Reggie will be the #1 pick, unless a team that really needs a QB trades up to #1. I think Vince will be the 1st QB taken with Matt losing out and slipping (but still being the 2nd QB taken.) I also think that the Vince is similar to Randall Cunningham comparisions is unfair to Vince. I think Vince's teammates love him and he has much better intangibles than Randall ever did. I say that despite being a Randall fan back when I was a kid. Vince has excellent potential, it will be interesting to see how he develops as a pro.

Wow, put him up there with some great NFL quaterbacks. 1) Doesn't have the speed or elusiveness of Vick 2) Doesn't have the arm or speed of Randal 3) Doesn't have the arm of Donovan 4) Doesn't have the arm of Elway Without the arm, his legs are not a treat. Sure NFL linenbackers miss tackles, but he will not the the chance to wander freely anywhere near what he had againt USC. Young is a great college quaterback, I really do like him I just do not think that his skills will translate well to the NFL. He is a GREAT ATHLETE the runs the Texas offense very well.
