That's crazy about the cardinals. Even a normal hot streak like 12-5 and we'd still have a playoff race for that last spot.

Does anyone remember that insane last day of the season about 9-10 years ago where almost every playoff spot was undecided and a bunch of games were close. I remember I lived in Seattle and I watched from my reclined in my den because my wife was away. Crazy night.

I've watched a ton of Mets baseball this year. They absolutely have to change their hitting approach at an organizational level. There has to be top to bottom change.

Mets are 7th worst in chase%, 8th in 1st pitch swing%, 2nd in overall pitch swing%, and 9th worst in wiff%. As a result they're bottom 3rd in barrel%, hard hit%, and average exit velocity.

I really can't watch Pete Alonso's at bats anymore. Middle of the lineup guy that continually puts himself in bad counts by chasing or makes terrible contact swinging early in the count at a stuff he needs to lay off. It's a problem top to bottom in the lineup, but it seems more obvious with Pete.

Hoping the Blue Jays and Orioles win tonight.

That would make the Yankees up one over the Red Sox, Blue Jays and Mariners for the AL WC.

I'll take the Red Sox beating the Orioles to make them tied with the Yankees and the Blue Jays and Mariners 1 game back, too.

Just need the Yankees to not make the playoffs.

Up 2 it will be asking a lot for the Yanks to miss out.

I am holding a 40-1 ticket on the Jays to win the world series so obviously I am pulling for them.

FYI, the Rays have clinched the top seed so they may be in rest mode this weekend.

As an Atlanta sports fan, I get to gloat very little. But boy is it sweet to win the division, by sweeping the Phillies, as Brice Harper just completely sucked throughout the series. Just so sweet.

And....Snicker has taken so much crap. I am not going to say I even come close to believing he is some kind of genius manager. But...4 straight division championships in seasons which they were never picked to win. He just gets the kids to play. There is a little Bobby Cox in him. Maybe not the guy you want coaching the post season, but he can definitely get the most out of his roster during the regular season.

And yes, I have had a couple of beers. Why do you ask?

In the mood for some chaos today.

Yankees & Red Sox lose, Blue Jays & Mariners win, we have a 4 way tie for the 2 AL WCs.

At the very least give me the Yankees losing and the Blue Jays and Mariners winning. Thanks baseball gods!

Well, the good news is that 2 of the Yankees, Red Sox, Cardinals, and Dodgers will be going home by Wednesday. The bad news is that 2 will go on.

Given that HR, let’s remind everyone of the ground rules at the Trop.

Quote:
CATWALKS, LIGHTS AND SUSPENDED OBJECTS:

Batted ball strikes catwalk, light or suspended object over fair territory

Batted ball that strikes either of the lower two catwalks (known as the 'C-Ring' and the 'D-Ring'), including any lights or suspended objects attached to either of those catwalks as well as any angled support rods that connect the 'C-Ring' to the masts that support the 'D-Ring' in fair territory: Home Run.

Batted ball that strikes either of the upper catwalks (known as the 'A-Ring' and the 'B-Ring'), including the masts that support each of those catwalks as well as any angled support rods that connect the 'B-Ring' to the masts that support the 'C-Ring' in fair territory: In Play. If caught by fielder, batter is out and runners advance at own risk.

Batted ball that is not judged a home run and remains on a catwalk, light or suspended object: Two Bases.

Batted ball strikes catwalk, light or suspended object over foul territory: Dead Ball.

Never seen a player knock the ball into the stands like that taking a run off the board. Tough break for the Rays.

By the rules, it's a right call..

Then again, by the NFL Rulebook of the day, the Tuck Rule was the right call.

But hey, at least the Sox won by 2.

(and that Right field area is full of ghosts that help the red sox. Remember this from 2004 ALCS game 5?)

2004 ALCS Gm 5: Clark's hit goes out of play - YouTube

edit: And while it's super-rare, apparently it's happened before. This happened in 2019, with Tampa the beneficiary (fielder trying to make a play deflects the ball into the stands, batter and runners get two bases, in both cases denying a run that probably/obviously would have scored)

I hope there's at least some discretion to award more bases if it is determined to have been purposefully knocked out of play. Not that it would have mattered last night, but just in general.

If after a player gains control, then it is 2 bases from where the runs are not where they started.

The rule is cut and dry and a good one. The overreactions last night and today are crazy. Some of the rules solutions people are tossing out would cause far more problems than they fix considering it's a rule that doesn't need touched.

Craig Counsell just blew this game for the Brewers. Showcasing some poor managerial skills there.

Peralta got pulled for a pinch hitter with 55 pitches in the top of the 5th inning and not have given up a run. Of course, bottom of the 5th the Braves get 3 off the relief pitcher.

Not sure I follow what you mean by "gains control" - I'm thinking of this exact situation, but maybe a ball into the corner where the OF knows the runner is going to score so he just "misplays" the ball into the stands. Is there a judgement call on whether it was purposely put out of play?

The clarifications I've seen refer to the outfielder actually picking it up and then it goes out of play.

I think in your scenario if Renfroe had intentionally batter the ball over the fence instead of just bouncing off him, I'm not sure how that would be interpreted.

I don't think it was a bad decision. However, based on his team's current inability to get any run production, he might have been better off just letting Peralta take three strikes and hope he could keep the Braves scoreless for the next 10 innings.

2nd and 3rd with 1 out. I'm not sure if I pinch hit for the SP or not. 0-0 game. Tough decision.

I am a neanderthal when it comes to baseball strategy in 2021. I am trying to learn but I am stuck somewhere between 1985 and 1990. I feel like a manager during that time would have left his starter in. However, if you are making the same decisions that a manager would have made between 1985 and 1990, then you are wrong.

Generally speaking, I'd rather take the starter out too early than too late. However, I'm not sure what the tactical advantage was here. Counsell went from a righty to another right, except the reliever simply wasn't as good as Peralta is. Peralta was also only at 57 pitches so he's not even in the range of when the typical starter starts to tire. I'm probably at least giving him a batter in the 5th to see how it goes, especially when he's facing 7, 8, 9 in the lineup.

So i guess I'm siding with the manager in most cases, but this one is definitely one I at least question a bit.

Probably shouldn't be overlooked that Counsel used Vogelbach, who hit only .179 as a PH this year

For what it’s worth, short of going with Hader, Hauser is the guy to go with there. Peralta has not been going deep into outings anyway since coming off the IL so I think you realistically get one more inning out of him anyway. I don’t have a problem with Counsell’s decision there. Hard to win when you don’t score a run.

He has had some moments lately. .263 Avg in high leverage situations. His role after they hid him on the IL for two months was exactly how they used him today. Whether he is good at it is another question.

Well in 1985 he would have been pitching until the 10th inning the way he was going. In 2021, I think they can get through at least 5 shutout innings before thinking about removing him.

I know it is the bullpen era but with using so many pitchers in a game you run the risk of someone having a bad game and being off. Today it was Hauser that was off. Sinker ballers up in the zone is a recipe for disaster.

I spend most of my baseball watching time watching the Rays. The Rays starters averaged 4.6 innings per start during the regular season.

So maybe?
