FOOL-X 2002 Regular Season

Time to get the exports. Might be a bit slow going this morning. Have a bunch of in-game things needing to be done before we start, and then my normal Thursday morning work conference calls too.

Anyways, getting exports now!

In this offseason, two teams moved to a new location!

As fans in Indiana feared ever since new ownership took over, their beloved Clowns, the two time defending FOOL-X champs picked up and moved in the dark of night. In a move that some mention was similar to the NFL Baltimore Colts picking up and moving to Indianapolis, the same city now feels the other side of the coin. The Clowns have moved to St. Cloud where they will now be known as the St. Cloud Raindrops

In a less surprising move, after 13 playoff trips and 6 trips to the FOOL-X Classic, the last original FOOL-X team to not win the title, the Mexico City Aztecs have moved to "greener" pastures. Citing failing fan support in recent years and a general movement away from Baseball to Soccer in Mexico City, the Aztecs move to one of the traditional hotspots for baseball, St. Louis! The Aztecs are now known as the St. Louis Hops

Goodbye Mexico. It was fun.

I love St. Louis. I love beer. St. Louis is one of our (assuming you're american) famous beer cities. Perfect combo.

Here is a random face gen sporting the new unis.

And by the way, I didn't know teach was moving to a Saint city or I might have reconsidered. Oh well, I guess it makes for a good rivalry.

Virginia Beach Whitewashes New York, Griffin Winner
Friday, April 26th, 2002: It was a long day at the plate for the New York Legends. They never did figure out Art Griffin and were shut out 4-0. The Virginia Beach hurler baffled them the entire game, yielding no runs and 2 hits in a very well-pitched outing. Griffin also totaled 7 strikeouts and 3 walks in the game.

In 5 starts this year Griffin has recorded a 2-0 record and a 2.34 ERA.

Hernández Is RL's Best Pitcher in April
Wednesday, May 1st, 2002: The New York Legends bullpen was superb in April -- and Roberto Hernández was a big reason for that success. He was named the Republic League Pitcher of the Month today.

He picked up 9 saves in 10 save opportunities and had 17 strikeouts in 20 innings. Hernández racked up 1 win and no losses.

Hops Navarro Named CL's Best Pitcher
Wednesday, May 1st, 2002: Víctor Navarro has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in April and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Hops bullpen ace collected 7 saves and 11 strikeouts in 13.1 innings, holding the opposition to a .217 average and posting a 1.35 ERA and a 1-0 record.

Weeks Garners RL Batter of the Month Award
Wednesday, May 1st, 2002: When Joe Weeks stepped up to the plate in April, he did it with confidence and today he was honored with the Republic League Batter of the Month award.

The young Portland designated hitter posted a .409 batting average with 16 home runs, 38 RBIs and scored 29 runs. Weeks also worked pitchers for 14 walks to post a .473 on-base percentage.

CL Announces Best Batter Award
Wednesday, May 1st, 2002: Stephen Hodge battered Continental League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 31-year-old Hodge told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I may not take the field and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 27 games, Hodge hit .379 with 9 home runs, 29 RBIs and scored 27 runs.

RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Wednesday, May 1st, 2002: Joe Weeks earned April's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Portland designated hitter might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Weeks hit .409 with 16 home runs, 38 RBIs and 29 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month
Wednesday, May 1st, 2002: Tokichiro Taniguchi is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In April the St Cloud hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .286 average with 30 hits, 3 home runs and 19 RBIs.

You all are just going to have to wait for the Raindrops to unveil their uniforms because I did not make them and have no fancy ways of showing them off like Kevin.

Our time in Indianapolis was awesome because we won two championships while I was there. But it is time to adopt a more threatening demeanor; I mean who would be afraid of a Clown? (Oh wait...) Now a raindrop, on the other hand, they mean serious business...

OK fine, but if you break it down and get creative with the spelling the truth is that we will "Reign" Victorious and DROP you like a rock. Thus endeth the smack talk.

In the middle. I'd say the top 3 beers in our home are Fat Tire, Sam Adams, and Negra Modelo. Probably in that order.

We don't have the best selection around here. Especially craft beers. The Super Wal-Mart here doesn't focus on alcohol. Hell, they don't even sell beer on Sunday.

When I lived out in AZ I was more into the craft beers because they were readily available. When I do make it to the local World Market I generally grab a few Samuel Smith's varieties, anything from New Belgium other than Fat Tire, and a mix of others (Stone, Dogfish, etc). She generally grabs a blueberry beer, I make fun of it, and then I taste it and want my own.

I was so frustrated with making my jerseys for Tokyo, MC, amongst other teams until I found that link to all those already constructed jerseys. Never again will I choose a team name that requires me to make my own damn jersey. Out of my realm of expertise.

Ahaha, pretty much all of this stuff is out of my realm of expertise. I'm a fake-it-til-you-make-it kind of girl. You did a nice job using the link that you sent me. It looks good!

Reliever Rodríguez May's Pitcher of the Month
Saturday, June 1st, 2002: Ramón Rodríguez had a super May and has been rewarded with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month Award. The Spring relief specialist was very effective, constantly coming in and getting his club out of trouble or protecting a one-run or two-run lead.

Tim Lloyd put together a very solid month to take home the Continental League's top pitching honor in May.

The 24-year-old reliever threw like a veteran. In 12 relief appearances he raked in 6 saves and 14 strikeouts in 19.2 innings as he put together his 3-2 record and 2.75 ERA.

RL Rookie Hittin' on All Cylinders in May
Saturday, June 1st, 2002: Joe Weeks's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Portland designated hitter has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

During the month he hit .319 with 7 doubles, no triples and 5 home runs. Weeks also scored 14 times and drove in 15 runs.

This year Weeks has hit 21 home runs and posted a .364 batting average.

Taniguchi Gets CL Rookie of Month Honors
Saturday, June 1st, 2002: Tokichiro Taniguchi was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 25-year-old catcher definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen May's Continental League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 27 games Taniguchi batted .320 for St Cloud, slapping 31 hits in 97 at-bats with 6 home runs, drove in 20 runs and scored 15 times.

Alou Holds Wolverines Scoreless
Sunday, June 30th, 2002: "That's one thing that has never changed in this game -- pitching can control hitting," the Rattlers manager told reporters after today's game.

The Wolverines ran into a buzzsaw as Wilson Alou cut them down to size 5-0 with a 1-hit shutout.

His skipper added, "He knows exactly what he's doing. He's not going to throw you a good pitch until you make him throw one."

In the complete game whitewash the Maricopa hurler doled out 1 walk and registered 4 strikeouts.

In the postgame press conference his catcher said, "Wilson goes out there and just goes about his business. I don't think he gets too concerned about what's going on. You can call any pitch and you know where he's going to be."

Alou also got some praise from the Ann Arbor manager.

"He really kept us in check today. Everything looked to be moving. Seemed like the pitch was right down the middle and it went over down and away... we took some pathetic swings."

So far in 17 appearances this season, Alou has recorded 6 wins and sustained 7 losses. He has pitched 103.2 innings, yielded 123 hits, fanned 76 and has a 5.56 ERA.

Un-four-gettable: Caldwell Hits for Cycle
Tuesday, July 16th, 2002: There are four types of hits in baseball. It is a rarity for one player to get them all in one game. Ben Caldwell did it -- single, double, triple and a home run -- and sparked Balzac to a 9-4 win over St Cloud at Fog Bowl.

"Yeah, I was some kind of hitter in this game. It was like all I had to do was close my eyes and swing the bat. I don't think they could have gotten me out with a bazooka." Those were the words of Ben Caldwell of the Balzac Ticklers reflecting on his great game against the St Cloud Raindrops.

He hit for the cycle and is headed for the record books. For the game the Ticklers left fielder banged out 4 hits in 6 at-bats and totaled 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.

Speaking to the press corps about the difficulty of hitting for the cycle, he told them, "A triple is so hard to hit. You hit very few in a year. To hit one in a game when you need it for a cycle, it's impossible to try to do it. If you need a single, you could bunt or do some other things. To hit a triple, usually something weird has to happen, the ball kicking past an outfielder or somebody falling down. It's hard. If you could hit one in the gap every time, you'd be a great hitter. It's a lot of luck to hit for a cycle."

B. Caldwell hit a solo-shot off E. García in the 1st, doubled in the 2nd, hit an RBI triple in the 4th, flied out in the 5th, singled in the 7th and struck out in the 9th.

For the year Caldwell is batting .287 with 115 hits and 31 home runs. He has scored 73 times and driven in 105.

St Cloud's Relief Ace Top Pitcher in July

Thursday, August 1st, 2002: Luis Harris was the anchor in the St Cloud bullpen last month and snatched up the Continental League Pitcher of the Month honors for July. The 31-year-old is in the prime of his career and pitching like he intends to stay around baseball for quite some time to come.

He threw 20 innings over 10 relief appearances and collected a 4-1 record with 23 strikeouts and 3 saves while etching his 0.90 ERA.

To date, Harris has 20 saves. In 49 relief appearances he has tossed 64 innings, fanned 76 and given up 26 walks with 7 wins and 7 losses. The St Cloud reliever has recorded a 2.67 ERA and allowed the opposition to hit .210 when he on the mound.

Weeks Takes Best Bat Award in July
Thursday, August 1st, 2002: In July, Joe Weeks was the toughest out in the Republic League and that is the prime reason he was voted the Batter of the Month.

The Portland first baseman rapped out 37 hits in 103 at-bats for a .359 batting average, hit 10 home runs, drove in 31 runs and scored 20 times.

For the season Weeks has produced 147 hits in 439 at-bats for a .335 average with 35 home runs and gotten on base at a .415 clip.

July's Premier Batter Announced
Thursday, August 1st, 2002: Guillaume Bélanger is in the final year of his contract with Washington and today added a timely piece of hardware to his trophy case. Playing in 24 games in July the 34-year-old left fielder ripped Continental League pitchers for a .304 batting average, nabbing him the Batter of the Month award.

He also rang up 11 home runs, 25 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

If Bélanger keeps up this pace, he'll cost someone a lot of money.

Thus far this season Bélanger has hit .301 with 37 home runs, 105 RBIs and scored 79 times.
