FOOL-X 2009 Offseason thread

Congrats to our champs, the St. Louis Hops! They are the first franchise to win three titles in a row in FOOL-X history!

In addition, this is going to be our first season on OOTP11! If you have not already done so, please follow the following thread instructions to set yourself up in OOTP11: FOOL-X New OOTP11 file is up! - Front Office Football Central

Keep any issues with the ootp11 upgrade in that thread instead of this one if possible please.

Finally, if missed it in the other thread, please welcome cmldude as the new manager of Virginia Beach and muns as the new manager for Ann Arbor!

Up next, our yearly awards!

Moore Now Hall of Famer
Thursday, October 30th, 2008: Enshrinement beckoned for Bernard Moore, as he was inducted into the FOOL-X Hall of Fame today. Moore, who played many of his 3209 games at left fielder, was an outstanding hitter and batted .320 over his career and swatted 331 home runs. Baseball's newest legend collected 1776 RBIs and scored 2424 runs during his illustrious career.

But while he was class act on the field, it was off the field where Bernard Moore shined the most. He quietly integrated himself in his team's community, selflessly donating his time and money to various causes. The press was largely unaware of his charity and Moore never made a fuss about it.

"I played a child's game for many years and this game brought me fame and fortune," Moore explained during his ceremony. "For some people, it's enough, but my mother raised me to realize that money doesn't make a person great. Being good at a game doesn't make a person great. Helping those in need and giving of yourself selflessly is what makes a person great. And that's what I have tried to be my entire life: great, both on the field and off of the field."

Legends Welcome Bernard to HOF
Thursday, October 30th, 2008: Today, one of the legendary kings of the hill received his due recognition. Jack Bernard was enshrined into the FOOL-X Hall of Fame. One of the most fearsome hurlers to ever take the mound, Bernard earned this coveted honor by dominating hitters with a 224-159 record over a 552-game career. In 3316.1 innings he fanned 2471 batters, walked 452 and compiled a fine 3.82 ERA.

"My teammates did a lot for me over the course of my career and I wouldn't be here without their help," Bernard said as he stood before the large crowd of fans and diamond legends. "It's easy to rack up as many wins as I did when your teammates play such great defense and score as many runs as mine did. But in turn, when they weren't having a great day, I knew I had to return the favor and that's why we were all so successful. We played for each other."

I'm going to postpone today's sim and move everything back a day this week. I had a number of people with export issues that we need to work out.

For the following teams, I received the error that the file was uploaded with the wrong version of the game. Can you all post and verify that you are using OOTP 11.1.8 to upload your team export?

Cumberland, Spring, St. Cloud, St. Louis

Everyone else's export that I received went in fine and you don't need to worry about it.

Sorry Alan. I don't understand why I can never just transition smoothly! I thought I had everything up and running fine and now that I'm messing around with it I fear I'm only making it angry. Don't hold the sim on my account. I'll figure it out eventually (as always).

Not sure if any of you saw in the main forum but my wife and I had baby #2 on Wed June 2nd. So it's been pretty hectic since then - I have not attempted the transition yet but d/ling the file as I type.

Looks like Alan said there is going to be a little postpone for exports so I shouldn't have missed an export...

If you missed my post about baby Lucas... here is a copy and paste from the post:

Lucas was born 7:38 this morning - a healthy 10 pounds 8 ounces! Labor was pretty insane. My wife woke up at 6:00 this morning with some serious back labor and we booked to the hospital. By 7:38 we had the baby...

OK Alan, St. Cloud should be good to go. (And if we're not, we're just gonna give up and cry anyway so move on without us.)

Oh and congrats CBF!!! The second one is a brand new challenge. Now instead of double coverage, you're down to man-to-man defense.

The new file up... a couple of things:

1) This file was pretty large because I assume it is the first one I uploaded in game and probably did something weird with images. I -assume- future uploads won't be as large. Please download within game and someone let me know if it updates or not so I know we're all good.

2) We agreed to do the draft pick signings which is a new feature of OOTP11. This provides extra strategy which I know many will enjoy. It will also let teams purposely choose to not sign a draft pick from a weak draft pool in hopes for extra picks in the next draft pool. The only potential problem I see with that is with our schedule we will only have 1 attempt to sign draft picks, so you will have no chance to lowball folks (unless you have a strategy to lowball or let them walk). So we'll have to see how that works out for us.

Did we really elect to go with draft pick signings?

That sucks. It really sucks.

Does that money factor into the salary cap?

Just to make sure people aren't getting upset at the wrong thing here... in OOTP11, draft picks get bonuses regardless. The option is to manually have control over the signings (and choose to not sign some and instead get future draft picks), or to let the AI automatically sign all draft picks.

No the money doesn't count against the salary cap, only against the bottom line, and because of that all teams have received a boost in media revenue to compensate.

Cool. Thanks for the clarification, Alan. I was under the impression it was going to be much worse and I was getting upset.

Well, I still wonder how it will play out for teams. Some draft picks will be listed as Very hard to sign by the game. Does that lower their draft worth some? How difficult is it going to be for people to sign these guys from year to year with the factor that everyone is pretty much only getting one shot...

Should at least be a learning curve for everyone here.

Excuse my ignorance. I haven't played 11 with this feature turned on.

If you don't sign a player, do they go back into the pool and get drafted the next year?

If you don't sign a player, they go back into the next year's draft pool, correct. But you also get draft pick compensation for them as well (I think only for the first three rounds though). So if you don't sign your second round pick, they go back into the pool, but you get an additional 2nd round pick the following season to compensate you for it.

Interesting.

So those players that go back into the pool, is it presumed in the game that, even if they're not playing ball in our league, they're playing somewhere? And so should see some uptick in their currents due to natural progression/advancement of skills?

If they stcik to the same levels and essentially get one year older without improving in currents, that might make some prospects undraftable.

(Ex: Think of a 23 year old draftee that doesn't sign; if he doesn't improve, he's 24 with A-ball skills; who's going to use anything but a 5th rounder--at best--on a guy like that?)

I honestly have no idea but am interested to find out!

I think it works better for those leagues with feeders, as the players actually will show up in a feeder league once again the following year, assuming he is not a college senior.

No the money doesn't count against the salary cap, only against the bottom line, and because of that all teams have received a boost in media revenue to compensate.

In my SP league I just turned it off...and there are no signings...it's just like OOTP X. Unless my owner is keeping me in the dark they all have minor league contracts and I never see any money go towards them.

Ughh...I think I'm gonna be sick. Due to budget restraints we had to make a hard choice today and cut OF German Mercado.

Player Report for #7 Germán Mercado - StatsLab for OOTPX

He was the 2nd pick in the 1991 draft and worked his way up to FOOL-X in 1997 where he was selected as Rookie of the Year. During his 12 seasons in Portland he was an eight time All-Star and won the Slick Fielder Award six times. He also leaves after hitting 465 HR's, #1 by a long shot for all Axeman. Mercado was a quiet professional who went about his job with the highest respect for the game. We wish him the best of luck.

The signing bonuses are still there if you turn it off. You just don't see it and the ai auto signs everyone. The signing bonuses still appear in the team expenses as the only place to find them. Signing bonuses won't show up on the player contract page. They will just show up as mlc there

Is the file supposed to be able to be downloaded in-game from the server? Because I'm not having any luck here.

I downloaded the file directly from the server. Glad it's a bit smaller--things went faster this time than the first sim. Still, weird that it wasn't finding a new file. I haven't tried to export yet.

Alan, will you be able to tell if there's something funky with my settings via my export?

I've been asked to hold off on the sim this morning for a little bit. So probably closer to 15-20 minutes before this morning's sim. In the mean time, today's stat of the day!

I haven't heard back from the owner that was trying to get an export in. I have a work call that I need to do in 15 minutes, so I'll have to run this morning's sim after that is done a little later. Sorry for the delay!

What program do you guys use to unzip compressed files? The program I'm using is not wanting to export the Fool-X file and any other I know is winzip but my free trial has expired.

THanks...
