UAB 37, East Carolina 27
BIRMINGHAM - UAB won its 12th straight conference game by beating the ECU Pirates (3-4) by 10. Juan Koehler had a season high 245 yards for the Blazers (7-1). He also had one TD. UAB won the game by dominating the clock. They had possession for over 40 minutes, putting pressure on both East Carolina's defense and run-and-shoot offense. UAB had no turnovers in the game. UAB clinched a winning season for the second-straight year. They will go for number 8 next week against TCU. Code:

WEEK 11 - PREVIEW
UAB (7-1) at TCU(5-2)(-3) - TV4 The biggest game of the C-USA season to date. The winner will have the inside track to the conference title. TCU's rushing attack has looked good recently, and figures to give UAB a hard time. However, UAB is the Horned Frogs' toughest opponent on its schedule. The same can be said about TCU for UAB as well. This will be a good game. UAB INJURIES Code:
RECRUITING Our last recruit was WR Darryl Prescott from St. Louis, MO. At 71--, he's decent, but not special. Our recruiting class is done, except for a walk-on kicker we will recruit after week 14.

TCU 26, UAB 3
FORT WORTH - TCU re-established themselves as C-USA's top dogs with a thorough whipping of the UAB Blazers (7-2). TCU (6-2) now sits in a first-place tie with UAB, with this game, of course, serving as any tiebreaker. UAB's 12-game conference winning streak came to a halt, as did their overall 6-game winning streak. UAB also lost a chance to enter the Top 25 for the first time. Code:

HOUSTON - UAB rebounded from a devastating loss to TCU last week, and they beat Houston (3-6). UAB's win was its 8th of the season, the most wins in one season in the B.B. Gunn coaching era, and also a school record. QB Kim McLemore had 181 yards passing, while RB Juan Koehler added another 100-yard rushing game. Code:

UAB 34, Memphis 7
BIRMINGHAM - UAB dominated the clock with great running by star RB Juan Koehler as the Blazers (9-2) knocked off their rivals Memphis (3-8) in C-USA action. However, the celebration was short-lived, as TCU eliminated the Blazers from title contention with a big win at Louisville. "It's sad," said UAB coach B.B. Gunn, who has coached the Blazers to their best season ever, "but what can you do. We lost to TCU. We had a chance to wrap up the conference, and we didn't, and we're paying for that." The C-USA title will go to either TCU or Tulane. The two teams don't play each other this year, so the conference champ will be determined after Tulane's game against East Carolina next week. Meanwhile, UAB hopes for a bowl berth in two weeks. Code:

PREVIEW - MAUI BOWL
UAB (9-2) vs UTEP (9-2)(-7) - TV2 UAB goes bowling for the second straight season as they travel to Hawaii to face WAC champions UTEP in a game that will be on national TV in the first week of bowls. The Miners run a balanced offense that tends to favor the run, something that might spell trouble for UAB. UTEP won the conference by beating highly-ranked Fresno State and San Jose State, one reason why the Miners are favored in this contest.

MAUI BOWL GAME LOG
Since I'm sick at home today, I'll be doing this game in a running commentary format, for your viewing pleasure. And here we go! Welcome to the Maui Bowl in beautiful Wailuku. UAB takes the kickoff first. McLemore puts together a good first drive, complete with several good option runs in tandem with Juan Koehler, and finishes the drive with a 9-yard TD pass to Koehler. After about 7 minutes, its UAB 7, UTEP 0. Then UTEP puts together a good, balanced drive of its own, and ties the score with 3:57 remaining in the first quarter. UAB 7, UTEP 7. They just announced the attendance. Only 15,600 people are in attendance here in Wailuku. Too bad... they're missing a good game here. After a UAB drive that was killed by terrible penalties, UTEP makes its way down the field again for another TD. At 11:59 in the 2nd quarter, it's UTEP 14, UAB 7. Their QB, Ameche, already has 105 yards passing on us. We go 3-and-out on the next drive, then UTEP once again makes its way into the red zone. This time, our defense prevents them from getting into the end zone, and they settle for a field goal. UTEP 17, UAB 7. We have yet ANOTHER drive killed by horrible penalties. Something must be done about all the penalties we have accumulated this year. Anyway, we punt, and what do you know, UTEP drives down the field for another score. UTEP 24, UAB 7. 4:45 left before halftime. Finally, we get another decent drive going. But with 4th-and-10, and 1:30 on the clock, the OC decides to go for it!!! McLemore is sacked for a loss of 8 yards, and the ball is turned over on downs. This game is not going well for us. Just TWO plays later, thanks to a big 50-yard pass to set up a 9-yard TD run, UTEP is up 31-7 with less than a minute remaining. We can't do anything on the ensuing drive, and we go into the locker room with our heads down. HALFTIME: UTEP 31, UAB 7. I give one of my usual low-key but forceful halftime speeches. McLemore was pressured into making bad throws all throughout the first half. I tell him to calm down and just run the wishbone like we usually do. I also tell the D that it's up to them to hold UTEP to 31 in order for us to win. UTEP takes the kick. On the first play from scrimmage after that, ILB Vinny Palma comes up with a HUGE interception for us. We take the ball on the UTEP 47. However, two plays later, McLemore attempts to throw it into the end zone from the UTEP 39. It's picked off by the Miners in the end zone. Damn... We make up for it, though, as the defense comes up with a drive stop and forces the Miners to punt for the first time in the game. A few plays later, McLemore connects with Koehler on a big 56-yard pass that takes us to the UTEP 8. Koehler dazzled, gaining 35 yards after the catch. But two plays later, McLemore fumbles the ball as he is sacked, and UTEP recovers at their own 10. DAMN... UTEP drives down the field, and the UAB defense comes up with a BIG stop just short of the red zone. UTEP turns the ball over on downs. However, their RB Stewart is having a big day against us. 90 yards rushing so far... On the next drive, McLemore gets another big connection to Koehler out of the backfield, this one for 34 yards. At this point, we have 202 yards passing, and only 78 yards rushing. Meanwhile, UTEP has 165 yards rushing, and 226 yards passing. No wonder we're losing. 3:15 left in the 3rd quarter now. We still have the ball... But then McLemore throws 3 straight incompletions, and we have to punt. The story of the game... The defense does its job, though, as they stop UTEP and force them to punt as well. McLemore then throws 3 more incompletions. Garrison attempts a 54-yard FG, but it just misses the crossbar. DAMN... After another big stop, we get the ball back. McLemore connects with RB Mercury Razo for 32 yards. As we head into the 4th quarter, however, we lose momentum when McLemore is sacked. Garrison tries a 56-yarder this time, and this time he makes it! UTEP 31, UAB 10. 13:17 left in the game... UTEP fails to get a first down, and they punt. The defense is doing what I told them to do at the half. UTEP hasn't sniffed a point yet in the 2nd half. Now if only the offense can do something... McLemore makes a big 31-yard pass play to TE Clark, taking us into UTEP territory. Then, again, McLemore throws 3 straight incompletions. Garrison then misses another 54-yarder. UTEP takes the ball. UTEP gets into the red zone, but the Blazers come up with a stop. Their kicker makes a 27-yarder. UTEP 34, UAB 10. 6:23 left in the game... Looks like it's over for us. McLemore, after getting into trouble early, connects with Clark on a 42-yard pass, but then throws a pick on the next play, sealing the loss for us... that is, if it wasn't already sealed. After an insurance TD by the Miners, Seth Weaver comes in for mop-up duty, but can't get any points. FINAL: UTEP 41, UAB 10

We lose the anchor of our OL, C Peachey, and we lose a LOT of key starters on defense: sackmaster Davila, Harms, Roberson, Springer, and McCrory. The OL and the secondary will be fine, but our DL takes a hit. Anyway, so long guys.

Final Thoughts
We took a step forward. Improving from 7-5 to 9-3 helps our prestige. But it would've been nice to win the conference again, and to get our first bowl win. We have many of the pieces to do just that in 2010. Let's go for it.
