Offseason News
No big news to report. No staff defections.
However, I am thinking of ditching the wishbone. The wishbone served its purpose for 6 years, helping us get to the top. However, to reach the next level, I think we need to get a little more balance in our offensive attack. We'll see after the roster evaluation.

In a painful decision, I decided to switch our primary offense from the Wishbone to the Veer. This opens up our offense a bit more, while taking advantage of Koehler's outside running ability. Meanwhile, the defense will run a 3-4 for now.

2010 UAB Preview
NOLAN: Hi! Welcome to the 2010 UAB football preview. I'm Skip Nolan...
FORBES: ...along with Bobby Forbes. It's time for some football, Birmingham!!! NOLAN: The Blazers went 9-3 last year, easily their best season ever in terms of wins. They also won a share of the C-USA title for the second straight season and went to a bowl game as well. Can they improve on that? FORBES: It remains to be seen. The offense will be good, but the defense loses some key players. NOLAN: Coach B.B. Gunn announced that the Wishbone is no more, and the Blazers will run a veer formation in 2010. This supposedly opens up the offense. Will it work? FORBES: It's a big gamble. McLemore has been inconsistent in the air the past 2 years. If he's as inconsistent in 2010, the experiment will fail... NOLAN: Let's take a look at the schedule: Code:
NOLAN: The non-conference schedule is beefed up a little, with an early trip out to the Pacific Northwest to face Oregon... FORBES: That'll be tough... mark a loss there. NOLAN: Then they should beat Fairbanks. After that, it's a trip to ECU to start C-USA action. The Blazers don't do well in Greenville... they could start 1-2... FORBES: 1-3, with Missouri coming to Legion Field the next week. The Tigers were in the Big 12 championship game last year. NOLAN: True, true. They play USF, then go to Louisville. After home games against Cincy and Southern Miss, they travel to Tulane and Army. Then it's Memphis here in Birmingham once again. Bobby, how do they finish? FORBES: It's tough this year. I say 7-4, 6-2 in conference, which is a drop from last year. I know Blazer fans don't want to hear that, but the defense has yet to prove itself. NOLAN: Let's see what the coaches think: Code:
NOLAN: I think the coaches generally agree with you, Bobby. They have the Blazers finishing 3rd. FORBES: Yeah, but here's hoping we are all wrong. Go Blazers!

2010 Recruiting
With another winning season under our belt, we can extend the recruiting radius by 50 miles. Our radius is now at 550 miles. This takes us deeper into Texas, Missouri, Ohio, and into West Virginia.
The other rules stay the same: *Only players above an 1000 SAT are recruited. *Only players with a 50 or higher in Athletic Prep are recruited. THIS YEAR'S FOCUS: QB, WR (2), TE, T, DE, ILB, OLB, S, P (walk-on). TOP TARGETS This is a new segment I'm introducing this year. I'll track all the recruits rated 80 or over each week. There are only 2 this year: T Rick Coffey LaGrange, GA 6-3, 279 Rating: 87+ Ath. Prep: 87 #4 player in the nation, and #1 rated tackle. Needs improvement in run blocking, but helps with pass blocking. WR Scott Garrett Conway, MO 6-0, 183 Rating: 83+ Ath. Prep: 67 #1 player in MO, and #4 WR in the country. Great with his hands, but in traffic, his efforts are not exactly the best.

WEEK 2 PREVIEW
UAB (0-0) at Oregon (0-0)(-5) UAB makes a difficult road trip to Eugene to face the Ducks. RECRUITING Top Targets T Rick Coffey LaGrange, GA 6-3, 279 Rating: 87+ Ath. Prep: 87 Visits: None Considering Michigan, Nebraska, Tennessee, and UAB. With academics as a primary factor, it's between us and Michigan, with a slight edge to UAB because of distance. WR Scott Garrett Conway, MO 6-0, 183 Rating: 83+ Ath. Prep: 67 Visits: None Considering Penn State and UAB. His major emphasis is on team prestige, but he's also keen on distance. Penn State beats us on the former, but not on the latter. OLB Floyd Booty Laurel Hill, FL 6-0, 197 Rating: 84+, Ath. Prep: 52 Visits: None A new addition to the Top Target list. #5 OLB in the nation. Great at interceptions, but has trouble with the zone defense.

UAB 33, Oregon 28
EUGENE - Juan Koehler ran in the game-winning TD with :42 on the clock as UAB came away with an unlikely win in Pac-10 territory. The win ranks among UAB's best ever. Oregon handed the game away with 5 interceptions, one which was taken in for a TD in the first quarter by UAB's backup CB Todd Smothers. Meanwhile, UAB limited their turnovers and penalties and controlled the clock, keys to the victory. Coach B.B. Gunn was elated. "Big, big win," he said. "Many people didn't give us a chance here, but we went into a Pac-10 stadium and won. This is great for these guys." The game marked the debut of the Veer formation at UAB, but the results were the same as in the Wishbone days. Koehler had 170 yards and 2 TDs, while freshman RB Marshall McCormick added 54 yards. #23 UAB 37, Fairbanks 17
BIRMINGHAM - A record crowd of 56,500 showed up at Legion Field to see UAB's first game as a team ranked nationally. They didn't leave disappointed. Juan Koehler had 153 yards rushing and Ben Patton had 103 yards receiving as the #23-ranked Blazers (2-0) knocked off Fairbanks (1-2). QB Kim McLemore had 2 TD passes in the game. While Koehler was happy with the win, he was more impressed with the unusually large crowd on hand for the game. "When I was a freshman," he said, "we were playing in front of, like, 20,000 people. Now I'm a senior and Legion Field's almost filled up for a game against Fairbanks. I can't believe it." Code:

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but... well, I won't say this dynasty is dead, but I'm going to put it on hiatus, at least for a while. I'm really getting into BBCF now, and I'm thinking of starting a dynasty with that. And, unfortunately, I only have time for one dynasty at a time.
Barring a computer crash, I'll keep this dynasty on file on my computer, just in case. Meanwhile, check out any future dynasty(ies) I may start.

East Carolina 42, #21 UAB 23
GREENVILLE, NC - The East Carolina Pirates dominated this game from the beginning, building a 35-3 lead before holding on to win by a final score of 42-23 over the nationally-ranked UAB Blazers. The Pirates' quarterback Rex Sneller threw four touchdown passes against the Blazers. Meanwhile, while East Carolina's passing offense was not challenged by the Blazers, UAB (2-1, 0-1) certainly had its chances. Out of 21 third down opportunities, they only converted six of them. Blazer quarterback Kim McLemore went 11-35 for 191 passing yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions. But McLemore was also sacked nine times, perhaps an indication of poor offensive line play. Mercury Razo ran in the only offensive TD for the Blazers in the fourth quarter, while late in the game wide receiver Ben Patton set a new national record for longest kickoff return for a touchdown at 104 yards. But it was all too little, too later. "East Carolina (2-2, 1-0) was on their game today," coach B.B. Gunn said, "but we were not. It is as simple as that. We certainly had our chances to make it a game but we didn't." Juan Koehler had 118 yards on 23 rushing attempts - a season low, but still good enough for his third-straight 100-yard rushing game. WEEK 6 - PREVIEW
Missouri (2-1) at UAB (2-1) Missouri favored by 2 We need to put the ECU game behind us in a hurry and concentrate on this big matchup. If we can go 3-0 in non-conference games, that will help us. UAB INJURIES Code:
RECRUITING Top Targets T Rick Coffey LaGrange, GA 6-3, 279 Rating: 87+ Ath. Prep: 87 Visits: Michigan, UAB No news here. Still looks likely he'll head to Birmingham. WR Scott Garrett Conway, MO 6-0, 183 Rating: 83+ Ath. Prep: 67 Visits: UAB, Texas, Missouri Uh-oh, this is trouble. Missouri is near equal to us in prestige, but obviously that school is much more closer to Garrett than we are. I wonder if it will take a whooping of the Tigers this week to convince him? OLB Floyd Booty Laurel Hill, FL 6-0, 197 Rating: 84+, Ath. Prep: 52 Visits: UAB, Florida No news here as well - another likely signee.

Week 6
Missouri 45, UAB 14
BIRMINGHAM, AL - The UAB Blazers were completely outclassed by the Missouri Tigers and never had a chance as they lost their second straight game by a wide margin. Despite the loss to East Carolina last week, a new-record crowd of 58,900 showed up at Legion Field, hoping that the home team could defeat a Big 12 team. However, from the minute Missouri's Deion Donaldson returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown less than five minutes into the game, UAB (2-2) struggled to gain any momentum. The offense was horrible. Juan Koehler had one of his worst games ever, managing only 41 yards on nine carries to lead the Blazers. Freshman Marshall McCormick had 34 yards on 10 carries. With the running game struggling, quarterback Kim McLemore could not get things going through the air, going nine of 22 with 114 yards, one TD pass, and no interceptions. UAB played relatively mistake free, having only one turnover and earning fewer penalties than the Tigers (3-1). However, Mizzou was just plain better. "They're a top Big 12 team," coach B.B. Gunn said after the game. "What else can you say? They came prepared, didn't take us lightly, and they came away with the win." Code:
