UAB will try to regroup from that terrible shock loss to South Florida with a game against the Houston Cougars on Saturday night at Legion Field.

Houston features a simple balanced offense that has done surprisingly well this season, especially in the run. Their top running back already has over 1000 yards this year. However, the main reason why Houston is 3-6 and in 8th place in C-USA is their terrible defense. They are near the bottom in almost every defensive category. They have given up more than 40 points five times this season.

Unlike last week, UAB should be able to put up a lot of points on the board when it matters. The key to winning the game will be for the defensive line to shut down Houston's run. Our prediction: UAB 38, Houston 28.

BOWL CHANCES DONE?

The loss to South Florida last week may have already killed the Blazers' chances of going to a postseason bowl. Conference USA has two bowl tie-ins. The champion faces the ACC #5 in the Emerald Bowl in Seattle, while the #2 team faces the Big East #2 in the Portland Bowl.

Barring a catastrophe, TCU will be the C-USA champions and go to Seattle. For UAB to go to Portland, they would have to win all three of their final games, then they need Louisville to lose two games. They might need Southern Miss to lose two games as well. This, while not impossible, looks very unlikely.

INTERVIEW

The Houston game is the last home game of the year for the Blazers, and several seniors will be honored at Legion Field on Saturday. UAB Sports Daily spoke with the two best known seniors on the team, QB Skip Nolan and RB Bobby Forbes.

Bobby, you really broke through this year as a top running back. And Skip, you had a very consistent year as well. What was the secret to your success?

FORBES: Well, basically it was the system that Coach Gunn put in. With an extra back in the backfield, defenses are confused, and I felt I could take a lot of defenses by surprise with my skills.

NOLAN: Definitely the system helped. With some good running backs behind me, the pressure was off to win the game on my own. I could go out there, run the offense and not worry too much.

Do you think that UAB can become a top team under Gunn?

NOLAN: No doubt. I mean... it is tough. We have Alabama and Auburn in the same state, so UAB might be down for a while. But given time, and a few good winning seasons, UAB will be up there with those two.

Did having a lot of seniors help UAB achieve success this year?

FORBES: I think so. I mean, the season's not over yet. Hopefully we'll achieve a winning season. That would be success. But anyway, yeah, the seniors on this team really stepped up and embraced the new system. Coach Gunn put a lot of trust in the seniors and they really responded.

Any messages to the fans?

FORBES: Thanks to all the people wearing green and gold. You stood by us through thick and thin, and I'm thankful.

NOLAN: Me too. We're gonna finish the season strong for y'all, and we'll give you a good game Saturday night.

UAB 28, Houston 14

BIRMINGHAM - RB Bobby Forbes scored 3 touchdowns as UAB knocked off the Houston Cougars in Conference USA action on Saturday night, becoming bowl eligible.

Almost 30,000 fans watched a treat as UAB (6-3) had its most rushing yards in a game this season with 260. Forbes led all rushers with 93 yards, just shy of his fifth 100 yard game of the year. Junior RB Moe Stewart had a big game as well, running for 91 yards and a TD.

In the first quarter, UAB looked like they were in trouble. Similar to the beginning of the South Florida loss, UAB let Houston (3-7) gain an early lead, as Cougar QB Emmanuel Cassidy threw 2 TDs to wideout Derrick Vaughn. However, in the second quarter, UAB's wishbone stepped it up and took over with a few great drives. With time to rest, the defense did the rest, dominating the Cougars in the final 3 quarters and not allowing a single point.

The MVP of the game, perhaps appropriately, was T Mo Gomez, who helped the wishbone with several key blocks. QB Skip Nolan had a good passing game, going 12-for-16 with 179 yards, but his stats took a hit with 1 INT.

TCU's steadily climbing up the charts (now #19) and giving Conference USA some national love. Meanwhile, the BCS is getting settled with Nebraska and Florida looking like the final #1 and #2. I don't know why Virginia's not getting any respect. They beet Florida State and Miami.

Injuries

PREVIOUS: Talley, Stewart, Leatherman, Newsome. All but Newsome (out for the year) are playing through the pain.
NEW: We lost TWO fullbacks in the Houston game: Jr. Leslie Deberry (hamstring, 18 weeks) and Fr. Bill Buckley (torn Achilles, 13 weeks). The good news is that neither are starters, but if Patrick Bruce goes down (and his endurance is suspect), we have no more fullbacks. We also lost one of our leading CBs, Dennis Kennedy, for the year. He has 2 more years remaining, though.

Fresh off of a win in their last home game of the year, UAB goes on their longest road trip of the season to frigid New York state to face Army.

This is a game that UAB must win if it hopes to remain in that all-important 2nd-place spot in the Conference USA standings. On paper, looks like an easy win. Army runs a run-and-shoot offense, and surprisingly UAB has been effective against such offenses. Moreover, Army has been blown out in 5 of their last 6 games.

UAB will be very cautious, especially after the South Florida debacle. We think they'll pull off a win. Our prediction: UAB 41, Army 27.

UAB 31, Army 27

WEST POINT, NY - UAB came away with the victory, but they almost let it get away from them.

After an early field goal by Army, UAB (7-3) took over, gaining 4 TDs in the first half: 2 rushing, 1 passing and one on an 88-yard interception return by walk-on freshman CB Lincoln Medley to end the first half. Going into the locker room, the score was 31-10.

From that point on, it was all Army (1-9). The Black Knights put together some impressive drives in the 2nd half, pulling within 4 points of the Blazers. Army could have very well won the game in the West Point cold had it not been for a costly fumble and interception late in the 4th.

"The final score was in our favor, but we didn't win the game," said a disgusted B.B. Gunn after the win. "If we want to be taken seriously, we gotta close games."

The MVP was senior RB Bobby Forbes, who had his 5th 100-yard game (111 today), along with 3 TDs, one of them on a pass from QB Skip Nolan, who had another consistant day as well.

We're in good position for that Portland Bowl, and we're ahead of Louisville in the power rankings. But we have to play So. Miss on the road, while Louisville gets Cincinnati at home. We need something big to happen.

In the Coach's Office

Walk-on freshman CB Lincoln Medley, he of the 88-yard INT TD return, walked into the office today and asked for a scholarship for his contributions to the team. His timing couldn't have been better. Seeing that he was the difference between us winning and losing against Army, and seeing that he's actually as good as our scholarship CBs, talent-wise, we went ahead and gave it to him. Hopefully he'll give us 3 more years of TD returns.

Useless Facts
* With 12+, UAB is tied for the 10th best turnover ratio in Division I-A, and is also tops in C-USA. That's the difference between finishing next-to-last, as predicted in the preseason, and being in 2nd place now. We've had only 6 turnovers (3 fumbles, 3 interceptions), while our opponents have had 18 - 16 of them interceptions. How about our CBs this year! With the great safeties we recruited this year, our secondary has to be the best in C-USA for the next few years.

In the last game for both teams, UAB travels to Hattiesburg to face Southern Miss. Southern Miss will be playing for pride and a respectable showing in C-USA, while UAB is playing for much more, the second of C-USA's two bowl bids.

This is a must win for UAB. A loss would probably knock UAB out of a bowl. Even a win is not a guarantee, as bowl organizations may look to Louisville's loyal fans when making bowl selections. All of this puts pressure on the Blazers to play a good game. However, who would have thought that UAB would even be in this position in Week 14?

The rainy weather forecast favors UAB a bit. However, Southern Miss's running game looked splendid against C-USA champs TCU last week. We hate to be pessimists, but we don't see the Blazers pulling this out. Our prediction: Southern Miss 31, UAB 28.

Southern Miss 41, UAB 0

HATTIESBURG, MS - Nobody saw this beatdown coming.

Southern Miss (5-6) ended their season on a good note, and perhaps ended UAB's season as well, by pounding the Blazers into oblivion. The Golden Eagles dominated all aspects of the game, gaining almost 300 yards rushing and over 250 yards passing, while holding UAB (7-4) to just 23 and 70, respectively.

BOWL BIDS
Ladies and gentlemen... the season is over for the UAB Blazers. Despite UAB beating Memphis during the season, the Tigers are chosen by the Portland Bowl directors to face 9-2 Boston College during the first week of bowls.

"Ultimately, it was in our hands and we let it get away," said UAB coach B.B. Gunn. "Losses to So. Miss and So. Florida really killed us as far as the bowl bids go."

#17 TCU will face 7-4 Georgia Tech in the Emerald Bowl in Seattle.

HEISMAN TROPHY
The winner is QB Darren Wheeler out of Georgia. He threw for almost 3600 yards and exactly 42 TD passes. He's just a junior.

As I look at this, I'm thinking, "My God, we are gonna stink next year." We are losing a lot, especially on offense. We lose our top QB, top RB, FB, TE, and 2 starting T, plus our second best WR. We'll have 5 returing starters on offense next year, at RB, WR, 2 G and C. We might be bad.

The hits on defense don't hurt so much. We lose 2 starters, hometown player OLB Barrett, CB Jordan. Barrett was our best defensive player. I think we gained a lot on defense through recruiting, so our defense is going to be superb next year.

But I digress. This is supposed to be a time to recognize the seniors. QB Nolan helped us out tremendously this year with his consistency. RB Forbes didn't get 1000 yards, but he was alright. They wouldn't have done it without our line. We could not have asked more from our OL seniors - they really shocked a lot of people. Our 2nd place finish belongs to them. So long, fellas. As you can tell, we will certainly miss you.

*Most of the other guys are nothing special, but they certainly up the talent level of our team.
*Schneider and Coates shouldn't even have scholarships - an indication of the extreme lack of available talent at RB and T in our area.

7-4, 5-3 in the conference, 2nd place... not bad at all, considering we were picked for 10th place. The way we ended the season left a sour taste in my mouth, though.

The wishbone really was successful for us... when our game was on. The offense was too inconsistent... the offensive coordinator may have to go next year. I'll think about that over the offseason.

Our defense is going to be great in 2005, but our offense will be terrible. We'll see what happens.

Houston features a simple balanced offense that has done surprisingly well this season, especially in the run. Their top running back already has over 1000 yards this year. However, the main reason why Houston is 3-6 and in 8th place in C-USA is their terrible defense. They are near the bottom in almost every defensive category. They have given up more than 40 points five times this season. Unlike last week, UAB should be able to put up a lot of points on the board when it matters. The key to winning the game will be for the defensive line to shut down Houston's run. Our prediction: UAB 38, Houston 28. *** BOWL CHANCES DONE? The loss to South Florida last week may have already killed the Blazers' chances of going to a postseason bowl. Conference USA has two bowl tie-ins. The champion faces the ACC #5 in the Emerald Bowl in Seattle, while the #2 team faces the Big East #2 in the Portland Bowl. Barring a catastrophe, TCU will be the C-USA champions and go to Seattle. For UAB to go to Portland, they would have to win all three of their final games, then they need Louisville to lose two games. They might need Southern Miss to lose two games as well. This, while not impossible, looks very unlikely. *** INTERVIEW The Houston game is the last home game of the year for the Blazers, and several seniors will be honored at Legion Field on Saturday. UAB Sports Daily spoke with the two best known seniors on the team, QB Skip Nolan and RB Bobby Forbes. Bobby, you really broke through this year as a top running back. And Skip, you had a very consistent year as well. What was the secret to your success? FORBES: Well, basically it was the system that Coach Gunn put in. With an extra back in the backfield, defenses are confused, and I felt I could take a lot of defenses by surprise with my skills. NOLAN: Definitely the system helped. His timing couldn't have been better. Seeing that he was the difference between us winning and losing against Army, and seeing that he's actually as good as our scholarship CBs, talent-wise, we went ahead and gave it to him. Hopefully he'll give us 3 more years of TD returns. Injuries PREVIOUS: Newsome, Kennedy, Deberry, Buckley out for the year, and Talley, Stewart, Leatherman playing through the pain. NEW: none Recruiting Commitments Two more commitments today: T Earl Charles (TN, 32-) WR Matt Lang (TN, 30+) With 16 guys now committed, we can concentrate on ball games the rest of the way. Useless Facts * With 12+, UAB is tied for the 10th best turnover ratio in Division I-A, and is also tops in C-USA. That's the difference between finishing next-to-last, as predicted in the preseason, and being in 2nd place now. We've had only 6 turnovers (3 fumbles, 3 interceptions), while our opponents have had 18 - 16 of them interceptions. How about our CBs this year! bbgunn College Benchwarmer Join Date: Feb 2005 Location: Osaka, Japan via Honolulu, Hawaii via Birmingham, Alabama	Week 14 Preview UAB (7-3) at Southern Miss (4-6) Coaches Poll: UAB #49, Southern Miss #80 Line: pick 'em Weather: 50 degrees, rainy TV: TV5 In the last game for both teams, UAB travels to Hattiesburg to face Southern Miss. Southern Miss will be playing for pride and a respectable showing in C-USA, while UAB is playing for much more, the second of C-USA's two bowl bids. This is a must win for UAB. A loss would probably knock UAB out of a bowl. Even a win is not a guarantee, as bowl organizations may look to Louisville's loyal fans when making bowl selections. All of this puts pressure on the Blazers to play a good game. However, who would have thought that UAB would even be in this position in Week 14? The rainy weather forecast favors UAB a bit. However, Southern Miss's running game looked splendid against C-USA champs TCU last week. We hate to be pessimists, but we don't see the Blazers pulling this out. This is a game that UAB must win if it hopes to remain in that all-important 2nd-place spot in the Conference USA standings. On paper, looks like an easy win. Army runs a run-and-shoot offense, and surprisingly UAB has been effective against such offenses. Moreover, Army has been blown out in 5 of their last 6 games. UAB will be very cautious, especially after the South Florida debacle. We think they'll pull off a win. We are losing a lot, especially on offense. We lose our top QB, top RB, FB, TE, and 2 starting T, plus our second best WR. We'll have 5 returing starters on offense next year, at RB, WR, 2 G and C. We might be bad. The hits on defense don't hurt so much. We lose 2 starters, hometown player OLB Barrett, CB Jordan. Barrett was our best defensive player. I think we gained a lot on defense through recruiting, so our defense is going to be superb next year. But I digress. This is supposed to be a time to recognize the seniors. QB Nolan helped us out tremendously this year with his consistency. RB Forbes didn't get 1000 yards, but he was alright. They wouldn't have done it without our line. We could not have asked more from our OL seniors - they really shocked a lot of people. Our 2nd place finish belongs to them. So long, fellas. The way we ended the season left a sour taste in my mouth, though. The wishbone really was successful for us... when our game was on. The offense was too inconsistent... the offensive coordinator may have to go next year. I'll think about that over the offseason. Our defense is going to be great in 2005, but our offense will be terrible.
