Wishbone on the Palouse 2004 (TCY)
Preface
I've never had much success playing at All-Star level in TCY before, mainly because I never had the free time to dedicate to being successful at it. I still don't have enough free time, but I decided to give it a shot and if I fail... oh well, at least I tried. Plus, I'm sure I can count on you guys to give me some tips, right? Anyway, I've chosen the Washington State Cougars as my team, at least for the start. Here are the game settings: Difficulty: All-Star 24-team Playoff System Recruiting, Game Planning, Depth Chart... all of that is run by me. But I'm not so confident in my game planning skills, so I'll be using the scouts recommendations a lot. Coach Movement: High I liked the Wishbone so much in my UAB dynasty that I'm going to apply it to this one. Plus, the big boys in the Pac-10, USC and UCLA, are running passing offenses, so it's nice to throw a run offense at them and see what happens. As for recruiting, I'm going to start with a 400-mile radius. This will let me recruit all of Washington and some of Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. If I'm successful, I'll increase it. Anyway, let's get started.

WSU HIRES B.B. GUNN
PULLMAN, WA - Washington State University announced today that they have hired B.B. Gunn to lead their football program. WSU has done well in recent years, but following the sudden resignation of the previous coach, the university believes it has found the man to lead the Cougars to the next level.
"This is a beautiful place," B.B. Gunn said, "and I think we can build this program into a consistent winner, challenging for Pac-10 titles every year, not just once in a while." B.B. Gunn says he plans to install the Wishbone offense. "We have a lot of pass-happy teams in the Pac-10," he said. "I think we can make the Wishbone work here." When asked about the new 24-team playoff system that was installed this past offseason, Gunn said, "I'm glad. The bowls were great, but I think this gives us the opportunity to really show what we are made of."

Staff Overview
Here's a brief look at our staff:
Our Syndicate Coordinator, Aaron Irwin, is above average in all levels. And he's only 34. Hopefully he'll stick around for a long time. Our Defensive Coordinator is Jamal Autry, 61. Very good at playcalling, excellent at avoiding injury and terrific at congeniality. However, his player development is not that great: DL decent, LB fair, and secondary lousy. That has to change. He'll be out after one year. Our Offensive Coordinator is Brandon Clinton, 67. Excellent at developing QBs and Very Good at developing the OL. But what I'm concerned with is his lousy playcalling. That may have to change. Our most important scouting position is the Northwest position, currently filled by Dusty Millem, 63. Terrific at scouting QBs, RBs and LBs. Decent at scouting WRs, but then he's blue in all the other categories, including both lines. I'll be taking a hard look at him as well, especially if we get some duds in recruiting. The lines are going to be vital to our success.

Week 1 Recap
No games this week, just recruiting.
Oh, I forgot to mention this about recruiting: *I'm only going after players with an SAT score of 1000 or more. *Besides that, all players in WA are fair game, but outside of WA, I can only go after blue or green coded players.

Week 2 Preview
Washington State (0-0) at New Mexico (0-0)
Line: WSU by 6 Weather: 72, sunny TV: none The Wishbone makes its debut in Albuquerque as the Cougars face the Lobos of the University of New Mexico. This should be a good tune-up game as the WSU players get used to the new offensive system. Our prediction: WSU 24, NM 17.

Week 2 Recap
Washington St. 38, New Mexico 10
ALBUQUERQUE, NM - It was a great debut for B.B. Gunn as Wazzu coach. Washington St. had no trouble getting the win at Albuquerque. The wishbone was very successful against the Lobos (0-1), gaining 329 total rushing yards. Junior RB Tracy Meeks had 159 yards rushing and a TD, while two other backs, plus starting QB senior Winston Newsome, ran in a TD. However, the player of the game was junior G Tito Holguin, who had several key run blocks. "The first win is always a good win," said B.B. Gunn after the game. "And to get it on the road... that makes it sweeter." Code:

Week 3 Preview
#25 Colorado (1-0) at #23 Washington St. (1-0)
Line: WSU by 5 Weather: 72, rainy TV: TV4 Fresh off of their win at New Mexico, the Cougars face their toughest non-conference opponent this season in the Buffaloes. The game will be the first televised game of the year for Washington State. Colorado runs a balanced offense. They didn't have too much trouble with in-state rival Colorado State last week, beating them 52-21. This is a dangerous game for WSU, as they still are tinkering with the Wishbone. Having this game in Pullman will help, but we think that Colorado may be primed for the upset. Our prediction: Colorado 24, WSU 23.

Just to let you all know, due to RL commitments, I usually won't be able to post more than one week of action a day (and definitely none on the weekends). Of course, if I get that bit of extra free time, I'll post as much as I can.

Week 3 Recap
#23 Washington St. 31, #25 Colorado 14
PULLMAN, WA - A sellout crowd at Martin Stadium saw the Cougars beat the Buffaloes. The game was tight in the first half, but after halftime it was all WSU (2-0). The Cougars held Colorado (1-1) to just 34 total rushing yards, while each of the starting running backs had more than that. Even QB Winston Newsome rushed for 28 yards on his own. Code:

Idaho (0-2) at #22 Washington State (2-0)
Line: WSU by 11 Weather: 73, rainy TV: none Another rainy day is forecast for the Cougars' second home game of the season against near-neighbor Idaho. These two schools are only 8 miles apart from each other, but worlds apart in terms of talent. This should be an easy win for WSU. Our prediction: WSU 41, Idaho 7.

Week 4 Recap
#22 Washington St. 65, Idaho 7
In front of another sellout home crowd, QB Winston Newsome had a big day in the win against the Vandals (0-3). He had the most carries for WSU (3-0) with 16, gaining 32 yards and taking in 2 TDs on the ground. He also threw a TD pass and went 12 of 16 in the air, gaining 172 yards. However, the player of the game, for the third straight WSU game, was G Tito Holguin, who has become a force on the line. Interesting stats: No Cougar back had more than 60 yards rushing, but the entire backfield had at least 32 yards each and accounted for WSU's 6 rushing TDs - the Wishbone at its finest. Code:

Week 6 Preview
#17 Washington State (3-0) at Arizona (1-2)
Line: WSU by 10 Weather: 83, sunny TV: TV5 After sweeping its non-conference slate, WSU begins Pac-10 play this week at Arizona. Currently the Cougars have the number two rushing attack in the nation in terms of yardage per game. You never know what you are going to get with this Wildcat team. Arizona has beaten a good Georgia Tech team, lost big to an average Utah team, and played #11 Wisconsin close in a loss. This could be a very dangerous game for Washington State, but we said that about the Colorado game as well. We think the Cougars will win, but it'll be closer than people think. Our prediction: WSU 34, Arizona 31.

Week 5 Recap
#17 Washington State 17, Arizona 10
It was a low-scoring affair down in Tucson, but Washington St. continues to roll through its schedule. The Cougars' running back of the future, Tommy McWilliams, started as the No. 1 RB in this game. WSU Key Players: McWilliams, G Tito Holguin, G Dominic Bullock. NEW INJURIES: Starting OLB Lamar Durham is out for the season (and his career, since he's a senior) due to surgery to repair his back. Also, starting WR Larry Neufield will be out 5 weeks as he recovers from tonsilitis. Code:

#25 Oregon (3-1) at #15 Washington St. (4-0)
Line: WSU by 6 Weather: 60, rainy TV: TV3 A big Pac-10 and Top 25 tilt takes place this week in Pullman as the Oregon Ducks come to town. This game will be seen all over the western U.S. This looks to be the Cougars' biggest test to date. Oregon's only loss was to #2 Oklahoma. Oregon runs a pass-first offense. However, WSU's pass defense is tops in the Pac-10. If the Cougar offense can control the clock, they'll get the win here. Our prediction: WSU 28, UO 24.

Oregon RB Howie Holliday ran in the winning touchdown with a minute remaining in the game to shock the home fans, as Oregon came away with a big road victory. God, if only UW was that good that year... I would say good luck, but being a Husky, I can only wish you have the second best recruiting class in Washington, and come in second every year at 7-1 in the PAC-10... But, KUTGW, I guess. :-P
