UAB 33, Southern Miss 28
HATTIESBURG, MS - UAB finally scored a point against the Golden Eagles. They scored 33 of them. Oh, and they won their 6th straight game. UAB did it like they did in the last two games - scoring the winning points with under 2 minutes remaining. Only this time, it wasn't QB Kim McLemore providing the heroics. It was RB Juan "Lightning" Koehler, who took over UAB's final drive. Koehler scored the winning touchdown on a 19-yard sprint, sending the UAB sideline into celebration. The Golden Eagles (3-7) still had a chance to win the game, but DE Howie Harms intercepted a USM pass at the UAB 19 with 11 seconds to go. UAB (6-4) clinches its first winning season since 2004. After starting the season 0-4, all UAB needs is a win at home against Memphis next week, or a TCU loss to Louisville, to clinch its first C-USA title. "Who would have thought we would be in this position?" said McLemore. "Nobody. But here we are." Coach B.B. Gunn was cautious, though. "It can all come crashing down if we lose to Memphis. We still need to win that to have a postseason. We can't count on TCU losing." Code:

NOTE: Wow... we are being consistently outgained in yardage, and sometimes the opponent wins the clock battle, but we've won 6 straight. Amazing.

Week 13 Recap
UAB 58, Memphis 52 (3 OT)
The Blazers survived 3 overtime periods as they defeated the Memphis Tigers (4-7) in easily the best classic in this rivalry. This was probably the best comeback out of all 4 comebacks UAB had to end the season. With about 7 minutes remaining in the 3rd, UAB was down 38-10. Then the Blazers (7-4) scored 28 unanswered points to send the game into overtime. Game MVP Juan Koehler had 222 yards rushing - 3rd most in school history. He also ran for 2 TDs. QB Kim McLemore didn't have a great day, throwing 2 picks and completing just a little over half his passes. But the 264 yards passing set a school record for most passing yards in a game. More importantly, UAB won their first Conference USA title with the victory, capping off an amazing season in which the Blazers won 7 straight games after starting the season 0-4. "I'm speechless," coach B.B. Gunn said after the game. "Give me some time to dwell on this. Man..." Code:

Emerald Bowl - Preview
Maryland (7-4) vs UAB (7-4)
Line: Maryland by 14 Weather: 37 degrees, rainy TV: TV4 UAB makes its first bowl appearance in Seattle as they face Maryland. UAB comes into this game riding a shocking 7-game winning streak that saw them win the Conference USA title, while Maryland has won 5 of their last 6. Maryland runs an I-formation, but is a threat whether on the ground or in the air. The offensive versatility could present problems for the UAB defense. Meanwhile, UAB's Wishbone offense could present problems as well for the Terrapins. Overall, Maryland's defense is much better, but UAB's offense has put up more points and yardage. Of course, UAB doesn't play in the ACC. We think the Blazers will have a hard time winning this matchup, it being their first bowl appearance. But we think UAB will make it closer than people think. Our prediction: Maryland 31, UAB 28.

Emerald Bowl 2008
Maryland 23, UAB 17 (OT)
SEATTLE - UAB ended the regular season with four comeback wins. Although they tried, they couldn't quite do it here in Seattle. Maryland (8-4) wins the Emerald Bowl after 1 overtime period. Sophomore RB Juan "Lightning" Koehler was the star for the Blazers (7-5), running for 149 yards and a TD on 39 carries. Despite the loss, UAB coach B.B. Gunn was proud of his team. "Nobody even thought we would be in a bowl game at the end of the year. To be here, and to send the game into overtime against a good ACC team, that's a good job. Of course, you want to win, but you have to be impressed with the job these kids did." Code:

Me too! Now that McLemore has a year under his belt, and Koehler's headed into his junior year, 2009 will be exciting. If only the defense would get better...
I was going to put those up earlier, but I had to run to work. I'll post them as soon as I can.

Wow, I just took a quick look at the roster post... I'll post about this later on, but we don't lose much at all from graduation. This team should definitely be better next year.

2008 UAB Summary
Code:
Juan "Lightning" Koehler didn't quite get 2000 yards, as I hoped, but I'll take 1700. Meanwhile, McLemore's stats are pretty good. And S Brenden Springer is da man right now (more on him later). Something really bothers me, though. As you can tell from the stats above, we won Conference USA with one of the worst defenses in the nation! Our defense was terrible. I know that we don't have a great defense, but we should be much better than our stats indicate. Talent-wise, our secondary is superb, and our defensive linemen are at least average. (No comment on the linebackers.) We shouldn't be ranked as low as we are. Now, the turnover ratio was very good. And it seems that we won a lot of games by limiting our own mistakes, and when the other team makes mistakes, hitting them over the head with them. But if we are going to continue to contend for C-USA titles, we have to get better on defense. Because of this, I'm seriously considering firing my defensive coordinator. We need to get more out of the talent we have.

One thing I noticed - you went 7-1 in the conference with only a 39 point differential overall. You have a tendency to win the close games. If it's anything like baseball, this tends to even out. For your sake, I hope it doesn't next year.

Definitely. We were extremely lucky this year. We gotta improve the D to avoid this, or I'm thinking we won't win a second title.

2008 Graduating Seniors
Time to bid adieu to the seniors:
Code:
The biggest loss here is our punter, who had an amazing season (considering we gave him many opportunities). Schulz was a solid player, but he lost his starting job this year. We really don't lose a lot here. (The end of 2009 will be much, much sadder.) Anyway, congrats, guys, and thanks.

2008 Final Thoughts
A 7-game win streak to end the regular season after starting 0-4... Winning C-USA and going to a bowl... all unexpected. I would have been satisfied with a 5-6 year, but I'll take this season.
We'll definitely be a better and more talented team in 2009. The question is can we get back to a bowl and/or a conference championship again.
