2050 DRAFT/TRAINING CAMP
We have the #24 pick this year, and it is used on....

Rnd 1 - Jonathan Chapman, CB, Rutgers: 20/44-->26/52
Rnd 2 - Victor Sellers, OLB, Southern University: 17/38-->19/45
Rnd 3 - Myron Horton, OLB, Arizona: 22/52-->26/48
Rnd 4 - Kennedy Hammond, RB, North Texas:19/37 -->20/35
Rnd 5 - Roman Brewer, DT, Villanova: 15/42-->17/41
Rnd 6 - Andrew Carlisle, RB, Memphis: 30/39-->31/40
Rnd 7 - Tito Zimmerman, WR, Georgia: 18/34-->21/37

A couple of very nice pickups at the top of the draft, and maybe some help at the bottom as well.

I believe I made a huge difference on defense last season. I believe I'm very seriously underpaid, and will not report to camp without a new contract.

I have decided to hold out until I receive a new contract.
I believe I made a huge difference on defense last season. I believe I'm very seriously underpaid, and will not report to camp without a new contract.
Well, Whalen is impressed with himself because he had 100+ tackles. His coverage was well below average for a strong safety, though, so that's probably why he had the high tackle total. I'm not giving him the case. Meyer is an entirely different story. I signed him very cheaply two years ago as a FA, because he'd never been a starter, and now he is wanting the big bucks. My plan was to franchise him next year. I'll let this situation run through camp and into a couple of weeks of the preseason before I decide what to do. I'm pretty sure that if I want to keep him, I'm going to have to release someone else.

OTHER CAMP NEWS OF NOTE
  • Big ol' random volatility boom for G Kelvin Goodwin.
  • Nice +5 out of no-combine rookie DE Grant Bruschi.
  • I dropped rookie LB Horton's weight, and he's moving to FS. (He has a very low run defense bar.)
  • Both holdouts are still holding out.

Heh. I missed MLB Trent Bailey's continued development and creeping I'm not so concerned about Meyer's holdout now...

Intriguing season, with a storybook ending.

Intriguing, because the first signs of less depth being an issue hit us. We were limping along to a 7-6 record with Torres sporting a sub-70 QB Rating.

Storybook, because Levon Schultz came in at the end of the season to save the day and lead us to a most improbable championship. He was Livid about his playing time, and when a guy with a low-20s current rating is Livid about not playing over a guy with a mid-40s current rating, I take notice. You can see his regular season numbers in his three starts below, and he had a 116.5 rating in the postseason. The annoying thing is that with my house rules about the AI setting the lineups, I had to manipulate the roster (sign low-rated QBs and make good veteran backups inactive) to make sure he started. He should develop nicely next year, so there shouldn't be that much of that.

DE Tamayo was DPOY. TE Pena and OLB Jamison were All Pros, but all the buzz in the A-T-L is about the 24-year-old 4th round pick who came off the bench and led the Falcons back to glory, and won the Super Bowl MVP. Levon Schultz, the stage is yours.

2051 OFFSEASON BEGIN
RETIREMENTS

Just one of the stiff QBs I signed to get Schultz in the lineup. I am pretty much shocked that FB Patrick Woods elected to stick around for another season.

FRANCHISE: MLB Gus Meyer
SUMMER: CB Jonathan Chapman

2051 FA1
Some significant creeping at this stage this year. QB Schultz gets another +4/+5, making his overall 5/28-->31/47. Last year's first round pick, CB Jonathan Chapman, gets a +5/+5 (20/44-->47/57). And then there's one the likes of which I've never seen. CB Renaldo Devine goes 48/48-->57/57. I'm pretty sure that I've never seen a guy unmask that much in FA1, particularly not as a 3rd-year man.

CUTS/RENEGOTIATONS
I start off with -$8.9M available to sign FAs. (Current cap=$419.7M) The following starters from 2050 are in the final year of their contract, or are RFAs, and signing them would have the indicated approximate effect on their cap costs:

TE Tracy Pena (76/76): +5.5M
SLB Colin Jamison (69/69): +11M
MLB Gus Meyer (59/59): -12.5M
FB Patrick Woods (53/53): +0.5M
SS Roosevelt Whalen (52/52): -0.5M
P Charlie Jarvis (51/51): N/A (wants only a one-year deal)
DT Al Garcia (45/45): -1.0M

So, if I were to do all of these, I'd have negative money to spend, and I'm in need of help at DE and OT. Just signing the cheap ones isn't going to accomplish what I need to accomplish, so I'm going to make a couple of cuts. Gone are...

MLB Gus Meyer (59/59)--Franchisee gets the axe because Trent Bailey looks ready to roll at MLB.
QB Rich Torres (44/44)--No point in paying him starter money when Schultz is getting the ball this year from day 1.
DT Al Garcia (45/45)--12th-year man who wasn't going to start this year.
FS Casey Burdette (42/42)--Another aging vet who wouldn't start.

PERCENTAGE OF CAP AVAILABLE AFTER CUTS/EXTENSIONS: 7.8%
STARTERS NEEDED: LDE, RT

RT Wes Reynolds (58/58), year 9--Expensive guy, but he looks worth it.
LDE Craig Garcia (52/52), year 5--Pretty solid all around DE.

2051 Summary

So, yeah, Levon Schultz. Same game plan and receivers as last season (but a bit worse in talent due to aging), but different result.

I'm adopting new rules next season--going 100% home-grown now. No new free agents except for undrafted rookies. This is in addition to the other rules already in place.

The game is saved right before free agency, so I can't be 100% certain what I've done, but it looks like...

3 – Scout or head coach who was hired with no contract restrictions
2 – Use franchise tag on any other player
0 – Send former 6th or 7th round pick or former to European league

I'm starting out with a 60-point budget, so I'm left with 55.

2052 OFFSEASON BEGIN
RETIREMENTS

FB Patrick Woods--Woods was our 2(32) pick back in 2040, and he held the starting job for all twelve of his seasons. For his career, he averaged a very good 6.77 yards per target coming out of the backfield, and was 80 for 254 in KRBs with 3 pancakes.

FRANCHISE: OLB Colin Jamison
SUMMER: DT Geoff Hickman

Heh. So just starting to put together my first budget, I realize I don't really want to track these, so what I think I'll do is go back to my Action Points test dynasty, take a look at what I did, and then just set an every-year type budget and use it as my house rules.

Putting this budget and resulting house rules together was actually pretty entertaining. Here's the total info. I'll update the first post in the thread with the new rules in a moment...

Staff Hiring--3 points per year.
3 – Scout or head coach who was hired with no contract restrictions
2 – Scout or head coach who was offered his requested contract before stage 3
0 – Scout or head coach who was offered his requested contract in stage 3
1 – Replacing scout or head coach currently under contract
2 – Hiring coordinator with no contract restrictions
1 – Hiring coordinator on requested contract before stage 3
0 – Hiring coordinator on requested contract in stage 3
0 – Hiring coordinator at half of his HC request in stage 3
1 – Replacing coordinator currently under contract
Easy way to approximate this one. I'll hire all coaches/coordinators to 5-year deals with no contract restrictions. No replacing anyone under contract. So over 5 years, I would expect:

2001: 3(HC)
2002: 3(Scout)
2003: 3(OC)
2004: 3(DC)
2005: None

So 12 points every 5 years charged for this. I'll round it up to 3 points per year. The resulting house rules are...
  • All staff must be hired to 5-year deals.
  • No replacing staff under contract.
  • If a staff position in open in the third week, a requested offer may be given.
Internal Contract Moves--11 points per year
4 – Use franchise tag on player for third consecutive year or more
3 – Use franchise tag on player for second consecutive year
3 – Use franchise tag on player labeled as angry, livid or demanding trade
3 – Use franchise tag on player with loyalty rating of zero
2 – Use franchise tag on any other player
3 – Send former 1st round pick to European league
2 – Send former 2nd or 3rd round pick to European league
1 – Send former 4th or 5th round pick or undrafted rookie to European league
0 – Send former 6th or 7th round pick or former to European league

4 – Sign current player to unrestricted renegotiation: 4 points
2 – Sign current player to his requested renegotiation (three per year): 6 points
0 – Sign current player to a full or partial capout (three per year): 0 points.
2 – Sign RFA player on an unrestricted new contract
1 – Sign RFA player to his requested multi year contract (max two per year): 2 points
0 – Sign RFA player to his requested one year contract (max three per year): 0 points
1 – Additional cost of using any item above after its first three uses
I've bolded the options I'll use, and how many times. So from this section, we have...
  • Franchise tag may be used, but it must be on a player with loyalty >0, not on an angry or worse player, and never for consecutive years.
  • Summer league player must be from fourth round or later.
  • I may offer renegotiations to three players per year, but for requested amounts only.

    Early Free Agency--2 points
4 – Offer FA player an unrestricted contract--
3 – Offer FA player a flat contract with at least 25% bonus
2 – Offer FA player a flat contract with at least 50% bonus (one per year)

1 – Additional cost of using any item above after its first three uses
1 – Offer FA player his requested contract
0 – Offer FA player 8th year+ requested contract 1yr no bonus (max three per year) 0 points.

1 – Additional cost of using any item above after its first three uses
(Submitting an altered contract to a player already on offer list re-incurs same cost as original offer would have above)
Resulting house rules are...
  • I may offer one flat contract with at least 50% bonus per year in early free agency.
  • I may offer up to three 8yr+ players who are requested no-bonus deals their requested contract.
The latter rule will allow me to pick up crappy mentors, and roster fillers if needed.

Trading--0 points
2 – Initiating trade for player from another team
4 – Initiating trade of player(s) for a 1st round pick or more
2 – Initiating trade of player(s) for 2nd round pick or more
1 – Initiating trade of player(s) for less than 2nd round pick
2 – Accepting AI-initiated trade that fails “fairness test”
1 – Accepting AI-initiated trade that passes “fairness test”
2 – Trading down from Top 10 pick within current draft
1 – Any other trade within current draft
5 – Any trade involving future 1st round pick from another team
2 – Any other trade involving draft picks in future years
1 – Additional cost of using any item above after its first three uses
I don't trade much in SP anyway, and I'd rather build my team otherwise, so just one house rule:
  • No Trading.

    Rookie Draft--13 points
6 – Use up to 60 rookie interviews
5 – Use up to 40 rookie interviews
3 – Use up to 20 rookie interviews
6 – Manually use draft pick between 1.1 and 1.5
5 – Manually use draft picks between 1.6 and 1.16
4 – Manually use draft pick between 1.17 and 1.32
3 – Manually use 2nd round draft pick
2 – Manually use 3rd round draft pick
1 – Manually use 4th or 5th round draft pick (twice)
0 – Manually use 6th or 7th round draft pick (twice)

0 – Cost of allowing scout to select pick in any round
1 – Added cost if player drafted after first round has 2 or more red combines
1 – Added cost if player drafted after first round has 4 or more red + blue combines

-1 – Deduction from positive AP cost for selecting top player on position board
Doing some approximating here, but I'll charge myself the average amount for first round picks, do no interviews, and based on my AP testing, I'm thinking I'll average picking two guys that cost extra per draft, and one top player on position board per draft. So the only rule to track here is...
  • No interviews.
Late Free Agency--2 points
5 – Sign a FA player released during late free agency
4 – Sign a FA player in 2nd or 3rd year in league
3 – Sign a FA player in his 4th year in league
2 – Sign a FA rookie player
1 – Offer any other FA player his requested contract
1 – Offer any other FA player a one year contract
1 – Additional cost of using any item above after its first three uses
Just the one house rule then...
  • One undrafted rookie per year may be signed to a contract during late free agency.

    Training Camp--0 points
3 – Use custom training camp settings
0 – Use default training camp settings
5 – Carry up to 70 players into training camp
3 – Carry up to 60 players into training camp
2 – Carry up to 57 players into training camp
1 – Carry up to 55 players into training camp
0 – Carry up to 53 players into training camp
Straightforward again...
  • Default training camp settings only.
  • No more than 53 players carried to camp.

    In-Season--11 total points

10 – Implement custom gameplans at start of season
8 – Implement custom GP, with unchanged offensive gameplan from FOFC library
2 – Allow unlimited changes to offensive gameplan during season
2 – Allow unlimited changes to defensive gameplan during season
0 – Implement staff-controlled gameplans for full season
4 – Allow unlimited changes to depth chart during season
0 – Implement staff-controlled depth chart for full season
    6 – Set injury rate at 100
    3 – Set injury rate at 150
    0 – Set injury rate at 200
3 – Sign veteran free agent to replace player placed onto IR
1 – Sign rookie free agent to replace player placed onto IR (once)

0 – Sign lowest-rated rookie free agent to maintain legal roster
So pretty straightforward rules from this section...
  • No changing the game plan during the season.
  • AI will control all depth charts.
  • Injury rate is 200
  • One signing of any rookie FA per year to replace an IR player.
  • No other in-season signings unless necessary to maintain legal roster, and those will be of the lowest-rated rookie at a given position.

Salary Cap--18 total points.
15 – Use entire salary cap--Just plain easier to track.
12 – Leave 5% of cap unused as of start of season
9 – Leave 10% of cap unused as of start of season
6 – Leave 15% of cap unused as of start of season
3 – Leave 20% of cap unused as of start of season
0 – Leave 25% of cap unused as of start of season
3 – Each player on roster for week 1 occupying over 10% of cap
2 – Each player on roster for week 1 occupying 5-10% of cap
Looking at my AP test career and at this team's current roster, 6 points for "expensive players" seems like the magic number here, so I'm not going to track this one, but just assume 6 points for it. So only one rule to track here:
  • At the beginning of the season, I must have 5% of the cap unused.

2052 INTERNAL MOVES
The cap is currently $425.5M. We being this stage with 37 players under contract, and $9M in cap costs more than where we need to be. Definitely a bit of work to do.
REQUESTED RENEG 1: OLB Jamison (franchisee)
REQUESTED RENEG 2: TE Pena
REQUESTED RENEG 3: S Singleton
RFA MULTI-YEAR 1: CB Renaldo Devine
RFA MULTI-YEAR 2: T Cortez
RFA ONE-YEAR 1: WR McMillen
RFA ONE-YEAR 2: DE Bruschi
RFA ONE-YEAR 3: CB Hopkins
CAP OUT 1: WR Williamson
CAP OUT 2: G McDermott
CAP OUT 3: Not used.

CUTS
DT Ed Stroup (50/50)--10th-year guy. May have been a starter, but too expensive for the way things are right now.

PERCENTAGE OF CAP AVAILABLE AFTER CUTS/INTERNAL ROSTER MOVES: 8.1% (But recall I can't use all of that. Practically speaking, I have 3.1% of the cap to spend on FAs.)
STARTERS NEEDED: FB, P
PLAYERS UNDER CONTRACT: 41

I definitely felt the crunch of the AP-Based House Rules this stage, and there will be obvious future ramifications as well. For one thing, I have two key players in the final year of their contracts and who did not get extensions: RB Jack Airey (74/74) and MLB Trent Bailey (61/61). So one of them definitely is exposed to free agency next year. Good, good.

2052 FREE AGENCY

FLAT CONTRACT OFFER: FB Maurice Fairley--Signed. He's a 69/69 6th-year guy who is solid all-around and has a 100 in Special Teams.
ONE-YEAR, NO-BONUS 1 (Yr8+): P Charlie Jarvis--Signed. He is my punter from last year.
ONE-YEAR, NO-BONUS 2 (Yr8+): QB Paul Carr--Signed. 40/40 backup.
ONE-YEAR, NO-BONUS 3 (Yr8+): S Arnie Whaley--Signed. 37/37 mentor.

An interesting twist here that I may need to address down the road is that I can only add a max of 17 new contracts to the roster each year (franchisee + 5 RFAs + 1 flat contract + 3 nobonus + 7 draftees). That's going to be problematic. For example, right now I have 28 guys who will be carryover contracts to next year, plus seven draftees, or 35 total. So I'll have a max of 52 next year, but some will retire. I'm thinking that I may need to add a rule here saying that after training camp I can sign as many rookies as it takes to field a legal roster that year, but for now it's fine.

In order to fit under the cap constraints, I'm going to have to release a veteran. Starting DT Kenneth Styles goes bye-bye.
OTHER CAMP NEWS OF NOTE
  • 3rd-year WR Tito Zimmerman, a former 7th round pick, had a +5/+5 and is now 47/47, and set to start.
  • RB Airey dropped 8 points to 66/66.

Our very strong roster definitely has taken a hit from the house rules, especially on defense. Hard to say what's going to happen here, particularly with regard to Levon Schultz being able to maintain the kind of performance he had last season.

RB Airey missed a good chunk of the season with turf toe, but his backup did just fine. Schlutz was amazing again. That 8.98 ypa set a franchise all-time record.

I just figured out how I want to handle getting the roster up to 53. Piece of cake, really. At the last minute, I'll just re-sign unwanted players who were on my roster the previous season to fill things out. I'll define those as such:
  • In the stage immediately before training camp, I may re-sign any free agent who was on my roster last year and is not requesting a bonus.
That'll be enough to make sure that we always have a legal roster.

FLAT CONTRACT OFFER: MLB Trent Bailey--Signed. My MLB who became a FA.
ONE-YEAR, NO-BONUS 1 (Yr8+): P Ross Hutton--Signed. New punter. 2-time all-pro. Surprised he went no-bonus.
ONE-YEAR, NO-BONUS 2 (Yr8+): QB Paul Carr--Signed. Backup QB returns. (I offered him before I decided to put the new rule in, or I would have waited until later. Oh well.)
ONE-YEAR, NO-BONUS 3 (Yr8+): WR Wesley Pemberton--Signed. As I am fairly likely to draft a WR this year, I probably should have a mentor WR, and this 13-year veteran does the trick.

Coming up with the 60-point combination took some time, but once I got that down, they're actually VERY easy to implement. All I did was make templates that I use for the different stages containing spots to fill in my requested renegs, RFA deals, cap outs, etc. Once I've filled in everything, that's all I'm allowed to do in a given stage. Beyond the limits of renegs/free agents, there's nothing else that's difficult to remember at all.

2053 DRAFT/TRAINING CAMP

POSITION NEED ASSESSMENT
QB: OK
RB: OK
FB: OK. Could use future starter
TE: Need future starter
WR: Need future starter
C: Need backup
G: OK
T: OK
DE: Need future starter
DT: Have young players, but no standouts. A 60-future type could play immediately.
ILB: Need decent backup
OB: Need starting OLB
CB: Need dime corner
S: OK

So OLB, WR, and TE are the priority positions this year. And we draft...

Pick Pos NAME Grd/Adj 40 Sol BP Agi BJ PDrl Dev Init Rtg Pre-Camp Comments CmpChg
1(32) WR Jeremy Hill 5.5/5.7 +

! -
47% 30/37 Good speed, great agility, high development. +8/+8
2(32) OLB Jake Healey 4.9/4.7 ! +

+ 35% 16/34 His bars don't match his combines at all. Probable heavy masking. +6/+6
3(32) TE Leon Capps 4.9/4.3
+
! + + 25% 14/34 Good red and blue here at a position of need +4/+0
4(32) DT Ronald Reid 4.9/5.3 + + +
+ xxx 55% 20/25 Immediate position switch to DE and he is 19/25. +2/+3
5(32) S Kris Lowe 4.8/4.5 + +
+ -
54% 15/26 Immediate switch to CB (the dime guy we're looking for) and he's 13/23 +4/+3
6(32) ILB Kelly Hutton 4.5/4.4 +
+ +

31% 14/30 Looks like a solid option as a backup MLB +3/+2
7(32) FB Junior Terry 4.2/3.4 +
+ + - 31% 08/17 Probably nothing more than a backup FB. +2/+3

UNDRAFTED FA PICKUP:
C Courtney Lane: 22/48-->24/46

Solid-looking draft there. We should fill those needs at WR and OLB, and might be able to get solid players in these later-round picks.

OTHER CAMP NEWS OF NOTE
  • C Bo Stanton dropped from 75/75 to 63/63 in only his 8th year.
  • I knew that 12th-year SLB Colin Jamison was on borrowed time. He dropped from 59/59 to 48/48.

Good season overall. The passing game struggled relative to the last two seasons, and I'm pretty sure I know why. WR Williamson's endurance dropped to 42 and ended up limiting the number of pass plays he was in on. Rookie Hill did creep from 38/45 to 50/50 during the season, but has a big, fat zero in avoid drops. We'll have to see what develops there. The running game was just fine without Airey.

FLAT CONTRACT OFFER: SLB Victor Sellers. Signed. Former Falcon who became a FA just last year. He'll start at SLB for quite some time now.
ONE-YEAR, NO-BONUS 1 (Yr8+): WR Scott Garner--WR/KR. Year 12.
ONE-YEAR, NO-BONUS 2 (Yr8+): P Scott Houston--Decent 47/47 guy.
ONE-YEAR, NO-BONUS 3 (Yr8+): K Kennedy Lyle--51/51 journeyman

I'm already finding myself looking evaluating the no-bonus offers in terms of whether or not the guy might contribute, rather than just doing what I had envisioned: using them to add mentors. This appears to be headed in the right direction.

Solid-looking draft there. We should fill those needs at WR and OLB, and might be able to get solid players in these later-round picks. In order to fit under my cap constraints, I had to release recently-signed WR Scott Garner. No huge loss there, especially with the WRs I got this year. I also had to release former 4th round pick Marvin Diaz (17/50-->30/30).

OTHER CAMP NEWS OF NOTE
  • P Scott Houston dropped 47/47-->37/37.

The only thing I can think of more boring than going between 12-4 and 16-0 nearly every year would be going between 8-8 and 10-6 every year.

As far as this year, Schutlz is still putting up very solid numbers, and now with a group of receivers that seems to be mediocre at best.

WR Wesley Pemberton--just an old mentor
G Roy McDermott--He was a 7-year starter for us. We should still be ok at guard, but will need to draft/sign a backup.

In some very surprising news, CB Renaldo Devine comes back from the compound leg fracture looking as good as new at 67/67.

FRANCHISE: C Bo Stanton
SUMMER: WR Troy Lane (undrafted FA)
Tough decision on the franchise tag between TE Pena and CB Barker. Barker is much younger, but he is only our #3CB. In the end, I decided that signing him would help a key position remain stocked for longer. And of course Pena may take a crap in training camp.

FLAT CONTRACT OFFER: DE Ron Rivera (78/78)--Signed. 4-year deal with a year 7 player. That's a big investment that I hope pays off.

After signing my rookies, I realize that I made a miscalculation somewhere with the cap, and have to release someone. Also, MLB Trent Bailey is holding out and I'd like to be able to afford to re-sign him. Starting SS Jim Singleton (48/48) seems to be the most replaceable of my more-expensive starters, and he's in the final year of his deal anyway, so I cut him.
Drafting for need early, we didn't very well. Things definitely picked up in the middle rounds, though.
