WEEK 13 PREVIEW
New Mexico State (2-8, 2-2) at Utah State (4-6, 4-2)
Utah State favored by 15 Weather forecast: 39 degrees, rainy New Mexico State comes into this road game - their last game of the season - having won two of their last three games after starting the season 0-7. Meanwhile, the "other" Aggies, Utah State, have won their last two games to stay in the race for the Sun Belt title. Utah State has one of the best rushing offenses and one of the best pass defenses in the league - a recipe for disaster for New Mexico State. Add the fact that it will be miserable weather for passing, and we could be looking at another blowout with NMSU on the wrong end. Other Sun Belt Games Idaho at Hawaii Louisiana-Lafayette at Louisiana-Monroe Middle Tennessee State at Troy North Texas at Arkansas State

Week 13 Recap
Utah State 31, New Mexico State 3
LOGAN, UT - In the last game of the year, New Mexico State (2-9, 2-3) could not keep up their momentum. Their offense was nearly shut down in a big loss to Utah State (5-6, 5-2). Once again the defense allowed the other team a lot of opportunities. However, it was the pass defense that really had trouble today. Utah State had more passing yards than New Mexico State's total yards. Meanwhile, the NMSU offense did their part to help lose the game. They failed to convert on 10 of 11 third-down plays. "This is not the way (the seniors) wanted to go out," said WR Warren Barber, a senior who has played his last game in a New Mexico State uniform. Code:

HAWAII 38, Idaho 7
North Texas 20, ARKANSAS STATE 10 Louisiana-Lafayette 32, LOUISIANA-MONROE 28 TROY 21, Middle Tennessee State 14 Despite their win over us in Week 13, Utah State loses the Sun Belt title by 1/2 game to Troy, thanks to this year's screwy Sun Belt schedules. WEEK 13 RECRUITING
We finally get a commitment from a wide receiver, but we lose our other wide receiver target to Boise State. In addition, Oregon State has swooped in to offer ILB K.C. Brennan a scholarship. We can't compete with that, so we take Brennan off the list. Unfortunately I will not be able to bring in a scholarship ILB in this recruiting class. We are going to have to work hard to get some ILB's next year. Meanwhile, I start looking for a walk-on punter. WEEK 14 RECRUITING
Finally, a commitment from the quarterback we were targeting: Al Glenn out of Aztec, NM. I don't know if that is a good thing or not; Glenn isn't exactly the impact QB that we need. His high school stats through 9 games: 178-380, 2238 yds, 7 TD, 13 INT. Unfortunately he is the best that we can get in our recruiting area. Here's hoping that next year's crop of quarterbacks is a good one. WEEK 15 RECRUITING
Our last pending scholarship target, WR Jeremy Witt out of Texas, rejected us in favor of Auburn. Luckily, we did have a walk-on WR target just in case, but this is a big blow. 2004 - FINAL THOUGHTS
Well, what can I say? This season was definitely no surprise. I knew our roster was bad when I came here to Las Cruces. What I didn't expect was the difficulty I had in recruiting. Our recruiting class was dead last. I need to be more aggressive in pursuing top recruits in our area. Even if most of them reject us, perhaps we may be able to land a couple of blue chippers. Anyway, glad the season is over, and I'm looking forward to 2005.

2005 OFFSEASON NEWS
The biggest news is that I have hired new offensive and defensive coordinators. And these guys have me excited about the future! Offensive Coordinator Kent McDonald This guy is decent at developing QBs, and good or better at every other trait! And he's only 31. I'm sure one of the big schools will swoop in and grab him in 2006, but at least for one season we have a future star coordinator in our midst. Defensive Coordinator James Lunsford This 55-year-old is excellent at play calling, helps his defense avoid injuries, and is somewhat likeable. The downside is that he is terrible with the linebackers and poor with the secondary, although he is decent with the DL. Not great, but I need someone with better play calling skills. In addition to that, we lose our Southeast scout to Texas Tech, but no biggie... we aren't recruiting in the Southeast anyway, only the Deep South and Southwest. A lot of our players are complaining in the offseason because of a lack of free time and a loss of girlfriends. At first, I'm tempted to say, "Be a man! Be tough!" But I do realize I've been working the boys too hard. I set practice at 20 last year, and all it resulted in was a 2-9 season. Maybe a change is what we need. Practice will be set at 18. Meanwhile, we have trouble scheduling out-of-conference home games. So we end up with away games at Tennessee and at Connecticut.

WEEK 1 RECAP
Sun Belt Scores NORTH TEXAS 27, Louisiana Tech 14 #23 SYRACUSE 55, Louisiana-Lafayette 10 WEEK 1 RECRUITING: TOP 3 TARGETS This is a new feature I'm trying out. I'll focus on our top 3 targets at the current time. OLB Craig Quimby Albuquerque, NM (Albuquerque HS) #1 nation, #1 position Scout: 95+ The number one recruit in the nation resides in New Mexico! That is an advantage for us, albeit a small one. We immediately jumped on him and give him a scholarship offer, but Tennessee did as well during Week 1. He prefers distance and academics. We easily beat Tennessee in distance but are far behind in academics. If only we could beat Tennessee on the field this weekend... that might help. RB Jumbo Cooley Phoenix, AZ (Alhambra HS) #86 nation, #7 position Scout: 90- I think a good tailback only helps the run-and-shoot, and to land Cooley would be big for us. We are the only ones offering a scholarship now, but Georgia and USC have contacted him also. Stresses distance and also prefers academics. We edge USC in distance. WR Buddy Manning Phoenix, AZ (Barry Goldwater HS) #184 nation, #14 position Scout: 83+ Good at catching the ball, but not in traffic. Still better than what we have. Strong preference for academics, but prefers team prestige as well. We and Louisville have offered scholarships. Louisville beats us handily in prestige, but almost even with us in academics. Hopefully distance will play a part in Manning's decision. WEEK 2 PREVIEW New Mexico State (0-0) at #3 Tennessee (1-0) Tennessee is favored by 14 Broadcast regionally on TV4 Weather: 62 degrees This will be the first game I am coaching in that will be shown live on TV. Obviously people are not going to tune in to see us. They want to see the number three team in the nation. The Volunteers, who run a pro formation, just beat Oregon State 48-20. Their offense looks balanced and pretty good, if one game is any indication. Can you say blowout? Other Sun Belt Games Virginia Tech at Troy Ole Miss at Arkansas State Air Force at Utah State (How in the world are they getting these big boys to come to their house and play?)

WEEK 2 RECRUITING: TOP 3 TARGETS
OLB Craig Quimby Albuquerque, NM (Albuquerque HS) #1 nation, #1 position Scout: 95+ OFFERS: New Mexico, Maryland, Tennessee We still beat both UT and UM on distance, so I hope that works in our favor. Now for some new, more highly rated additions to our Top 3: DE Will Beauchamp Glendale, AZ (Cactus HS) #24 nation, #7 position Scout: 79+ OFFERS: Michigan State, New Mexico State, USC (visiting) OTHERS INTERESTED: Nebraska, Oklahoma A great run defender... just what we need. Of course, he's already visiting USC... that doesn't help. But distance is one of his priorities, and we beat all schools on that (although we barely beat USC). S Gus Brandon Byers, CO (Byers HS) #54 nation, #1 position Scout: 78++ OFFERS: New Mexico State, Texas, USC (visiting) OTHERS INTERESTED: Florida, Michigan I love me some dominant defensive backs, and this is one. In 6 high school games, he has 53 tackles, 7 INTs and 3.5 sacks. Strong preference for academics (he has a 3.78 GPA, after all), but also likes distance. This is where we beat all other schools that have made offers.

WEEK 3 PREVIEW
New Mexico State (0-1) at Connecticut (0-0) Connecticut favored by 5 Weather: 68 degrees, rainy No information on Connecticut, a Big East team that seems to favor the run. According to the computer ratings, they are much worse than Tennessee. Wow, if we can go to the East Coast and pull off a win, I would be very very happy. Injury Report None! Despite the whipping by Tennessee, we emerged unscathed. Other Sun Belt Games Arkansas State at BYU Idaho at Illinois Louisiana-Lafayette at Minnesota Middle Tenn. State at South Carolina Troy at Arizona Utah State at Georgia Tech Fairbanks at North Texas [TV4] Bethel at Louisiana-Monroe

I'm always looking to try to improve the way I post game recaps and the like. Therefore I'm going to try something new with the recaps. Any comments would be appreciated. Also, I'm going to scale back my recruiting reports. There's so much going on that it's hard and confusing to report about it. I will, however, update you from time to time about top prospects.

2005 Week 3
Connecticut 48, New Mexico State 17 I had a good feeling about this game as I stood on the sideline in Connecticut watching my team do their warm-ups. That feeling disappeared after Connecticut drove down the field for a touchdown at the 11:01 mark. Although we made it competitive before halftime, we folded in the second half. What a bad loss. Offensively, we didn't exist. Our defense sucked, too. I thought we would be more competitive. Either Connecticut is really good, or we're really bad. Code:

Baylor 45, Louisiana-Monroe 6 Kentucky 38, Idaho 10 Troy 31, Middle Tennessee State 17 Utah State 38, North Texas 21 Upcoming Week 5 Games Louisiana-Monroe (1-1) at New Mexico State (0-2) NMSU is favored by 7 (!) Weather: 74 degrees, fair The first Sun Belt game of the year, and we are favored by seven points? ULM just came off of a 45-6 beatdown by Baylor at home. Defensively, they are not that bad; that Baylor score was a bit deceptive. Offensively, they stink at the passing game, but are average with the run. If we can stuff the run, and if we can get some - any - offense, we have a chance. Other Sun Belt Games Mississippi State at Troy Idaho at North Texas Middle Tenn. State at Arkansas State Utah State at Louisiana-Lafayette TEAM NEWS One of our backup receivers, WR Ian Caldwell, was caught committing a serious violation of the rules. Luckily we avoid the wrath of the NCAA with this one. However, something has to be done. His popularity with his teammates is good, but we have to set an example. Caldwell is suspended immediately.

Recruiting makes me depressed, too, especially with a team as bad as New Mexico State. I wonder if I should even bother posting about it because my recruits are lowly anyway. I don't mind importing box scores, but yeah, I wonder what readers prefer. I know that I myself don't like to scroll through an entire box score, but I do like to see the stats of key players, team stats like yardage gained, etc.

Mississippi State 38, Troy 7 Middle Tenn. St. 28, Arkansas St. 13 Idaho 42, North Texas 35 Utah State 21, Louisiana-Lafayette 18 Code:
Upcoming Week 6 Games New Mexico (2-2) at New Mexico State (0-3) Lobos are favored by 12 Weather: 61 degrees, fair Rivalry week! The Lobos come to our house, and we are ready to attack... so to speak. UNM's two losses were blowouts: 79-0 to #1 Michigan, and 38-0 to #15 Utah. They also beat So. Miss. and Kodiak by close games. The Lobos' I-Formation offense is average at best, but their defense is terrible, especially against the pass. Despite the spread, I think we will make it competitive. Other Sun Belt Games Arkansas St. at Idaho Louisiana-Lafayette at Toledo Louisiana-Monroe at Central Michigan Troy at North Texas

2005 Week 6
New Mexico 42, New Mexico State 35 Ah, so close to that first win! After the Lobos scored a TD early in the game, we scored three of our own to dominate the first quarter. They tied it up 21-21 at the half. We take a 35-28 lead by the end of the third quarter, only to see it slip away. Oh, so disappointing to let a rivalry win get away. I am pleased with QB Howard Glover's stats. This was his best game yet, and it was a rivalry game. I was wondering if I should give Al Glenn a chance, but Glover rewarded my faith in him. All in all, our offense did not make many mistakes in this game. The defense, however, gave up too many yards. As you will see in the injury report, we suffered some key losses on the defensive side of the ball in this game, so our defense is not going to get better any time soon. Code:

Week 6 Injuries Very depressing... Our top player on defense, OLB Harold Grant, is out the rest of the year after ripping up his knee. Damn, what a blow. Our starting ILB Durnwirth is out for the season, too, with a broken foot. DE Harold Atkins, our second-best defensive player, strained a triceps, but hopefully will still be able to contribute. Upcoming Week 7 Games New Mexico State (0-4, 0-1) at Louisiana-Lafayette (0-4, 0-1) Lafayette is favored by 8 Weather: 54 degrees, stormy The Rajun Cajuns are probably the only other team in the Sun Belt that is as bad as we are right now. They run a pro offense that is terrible, moreso running than passing. That's good for us, since our run defense is terrible. Their defense is not bad against the pass, so that presents a problem. Plus this is a road game. We need a win here, but this will be tough. Other Sun Belt Games Arkansas St. at Troy Middle Tenn. St. at Oklahoma St. North Texas at Louisiana-Monroe

2005 Week 7
New Mexico State 17, Louisiana-Lafayette 10 Yes! We finally get a win and avoid going 0-5 for the second straight year. And man, my boys certainly made it exciting. Or they played poorly and were lucky, depending on your viewpoint. The game started badly, as the Rajun Cajuns controlled the first half. QB Howard Glover threw an interception early in the first quarter that led to 3 points by the opposition. Other than that and a fumble in the second quarter, it was punt-punt-punt. ULL led 10-0 at halftime. Under three minutes left in the third quarter, CB Moe Camacho kick-started things for us with a 44-yard interception return for a TD to make it 10-7. Three plays after the Cajuns got the ball back, CB Bubba Keating created another pick. Unfortunately, we couldn’t capitalize on that, but our defense was setting the tone. ULL didn’t have a chance after that. Then with less than five minutes remaining in the game, Glover led us down the field in an efficient, time-eating drive that ended when RB Jeffrey Berlin tried to run the ball into the end zone, fumbled, recovered his own fumble and took it to the house to give us the lead at the 0:17 mark. Yeah, it was Louisiana-Lafayette, but I’m proud of the way our boys earned a win on the road. This was the first game this season that I was at least satisfied with my defense. They played well without OLB Harold Grant and ILB Fred Durnwirth. This was the first game I can remember that we outrushed an opponent, so you know things went our way. Code:

Man, we really need to win this game to have any shot at the conference title, because it only gets harder after this. ASU lost on the road to Sun Belt-leading Troy by only 4 points last week; they certainly are improving. Their pro-style offense is abysmal, but their defense is not bad. 2005 Week 8
Arkansas State (1-4, 1-2) at New Mexico State (1-4, 1-1) NMSU is favored by 5 Weather: 58 degrees, fine Attendance: 11,800 (30,300) 1st Quarter Arkansas State takes a quick lead at 12:20 with a touchdown pass. However, we bounce back, going 75 yards with QB Howard Glover throwing a 4-yard TD pass to WR Graham Leeuwenburg. Late in the quarter, S Ricky Barbour intercepts the ball. On the ensuing drive, RB Ty Blair fumbles after running the ball ten yards to our own 40, and WR Leland Breaux recovers it and runs it 60 yards to the end zone. New Mexico St. 14, Arkansas St. 7 2nd Quarter It was mainly a defensive quarter for both teams, but we add another TD with about nine minutes remaining when Glover throws it two yards to WR Juan Sims in the end zone. New Mexico St. 21, Arkansas St. 7 3rd Quarter It was all ASU here as they get two TD passes to tie it up. New Mexico St. 21, Arkansas St. 21 4th Quarter Glover starts to self-destruct as he throws two interceptions on two straight drives, one of which Arkansas St. gets a field goal off of to take a 24-21 lead. However, we get the ball back and drive down the field, with Glover throwing the winning 8-yard TD pass to WR Tyrell Hager with 5:23 remaining. Way to redeem yourself, Glover. Final: New Mexico State 28, Arkansas State 24 A great win for us. My first winning streak, yay! This puts us into a tie for third place in the Sun Belt, and closer to my goal of taking the Aggies to its first bowl game in 40-something years. Of course, that could all fizzle away quickly as we travel to Troy and North Texas the next two weeks. What I like about this game is that we were 3-for-3 on red zone trips, scoring TDs on all of them. Yards (rush-pass-total) ARST: 107-234-341 NMSU: 107-147-254 NMSU Leaders Rushing RB Ty Blair – 13-54 yds Passing QB Howard Glover – 16-30-147 yds, 3 TD, 2 INT Receiving WR Tyrell Hager – 7-41 yds, 1 TD Top Defenders CB Bubba Keating – 9 tck, 1 asst, 1 INT DT Lonnie Roach – 5 tck, 3 asst OLB Arnie Wohlman – 5 tck DE Grant Ruth – 4 tck, 4 asst, 1.5 sacks Players of the Week: none, but DE Grant Ruth was game MVP Injuries Number two RB Jeffrey Berlin is out for basically the remainder of the regular season with a separated shoulder. Week 8 Recruiting We had a few rejections, including that #1 OLB from New Mexico I told you about earlier. However, we did get some commitments, including one big one: WR Charlie Costello Cripple Creek, CO (Cripple Creek-Victor HS) 6-3, 186 lbs Scout: 72- The #2 WR in Colorado. Good at catching the ball. Averages 24.30 yards a catch in high school play.

2005 Week 9
New Mexico State (2-4, 2-1) at Troy (4-3, 4-0) Troy is favored by 10 Weather: 77 degrees, fine Attendance: 22,200 (30,000) 1st Quarter It was all Troy as they get a field goal and a 54-yard punt return. Troy 10, New Mexico St. 0 2nd Quarter We get on the board at 13:17 with a Toby Schwartz field goal. However, they get a field goal as well as time expires. Troy 13, New Mexico St. 3 3rd Quarter A defensive quarter as they get another field goal. However, Toby Schwartz gives us three more points near the end of the quarter. Troy 16, New Mexico St. 6 4th Quarter Troy finally scores an offensive touchdown on us as their running back takes it in at the 9:38 mark. About a minute later, QB Howard Glover throws a pass to WR Graham Leeuwenburg to make it 23-13. However, we can't do more than that. Troy puts the icing on the cake with another field goal with under a minute remaining. Final: Troy 26, New Mexico State 13 Disappointing. I was really hoping for an upset here, but Troy is too good right now. This, for all intents and purposes, ends our chances of winning the Sun Belt, and by extension making it to a bowl game. The injury bug is tearing apart our defense. We now have three key starters out for the rest of the season, along with OLB Harold Grant and ILB Fred Durnwirth. Week 9 Recruiting Four more commitments, of which only one is noteworthy: S Buddy Craig Las Vegas, NV (Durango HS) 5-9, 166 lbs Scout: 59+ The #3 safety in Nevada. 2005 Week 10
New Mexico State (2-5, 2-2) at North Texas (3-4, 0-4) North Texas is favored by 8 Weather: 67 degrees, fine Attendance: 17,300 (30,500) Yeah, North Texas is 0-4 in the conference and in last place. But I'm not buying that they are the worst team in the conference. They were picked to win it all this year in the preseason, so you know they have talent. Two of their four losses – to Troy and to Idaho – were close. They could easily be 2-2 in the conference and 5-2 overall. If we somehow manage to get a win here in Denton, I would be very very very happy. 1st Quarter Late in the quarter, we are the first to put points on the board with a Toby Schwartz field goal. New Mexico St. 3, North Texas 0 2nd Quarter The good times continue as Howard Glover throws a 6-yard TD pass to WR Dave Brummitt to make it 10-0. Then Schwartz adds another field goal to make it 13-0. However, with under two minutes remaining UNT drives down the field to score its first TD of the game. New Mexico St. 13, North Texas 7 3rd Quarter North Texas took control of the game as they score two touchdowns. North Texas 21, New Mexico St. 13 4th Quarter We began the quarter with another Toby Schwartz field goal, but that would be it as the Mean Green proceeded to pile drive us. We allowed them three touchdowns and a field goal – 24 points! - in a terrible, terrible ending. Final: North Texas 45, New Mexico State 16 We made UNT look like the best team in the conference. Not even Troy last week beat us this badly. What a stinker. Yards (rush-pass-total) NMSU: 36-209-245 NTEX: 74-266-340 NMSU Leaders Rushing RB Ty Blair – 6-12 yds (seriously, this was our top rusher. But he does have a sprained ankle) Passing QB Howard Glover – 22-42, 209 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT Receiving WR Dave Brummitt – 7 ctch, 68 yds, 1 TD WR Graham Leeuwenburg – 5 ctch, 50 yds Top Defenders ILB Butch Falvey – 8 tackles, 1 assist, 1 sack (Falvey's doing a great job filling in for Durnwirth) DE Grant Ruth – 6 tackles, 2 assist, 1 sack CB Bubba Keating – 6 tackles, 1 assist Players of the Week: Glover Injuries An offensive injury as our number three wide receiver Leland Breaux pulls a quad muscle and will be out for four weeks. Week 10 Recruiting Two more commitments, but nobody with a scout rating over 50.

2005 Week 11
Idaho (2-5, 2-3) at New Mexico State (2-6, 2-3) (Oops... didn’t jot down the line.) Weather: 62 degrees, fair Attendance: 11,100 (30,300) A sparse crowd was on hand as we came back home to face the Vandals. If we win this game, it might help us finish the season in the middle of the conference. 1st Quarter No scoring here. Idaho 0, New Mexico St. 0 2nd Quarter S Carlos Whitfield gets things started for us with a 51-yard INT return. However, Idaho strikes back with a touchdown pass, and we go into the locker room all tied up. Idaho 7, New Mexico St. 7 3rd Quarter The only points of the quarter come when QB Howard Glover throws a 15-yard TD pass to WR Tyrell Hager. New Mexico St. 14, Idaho 7 4th Quarter We are holding them very well most of the quarter, and it looks like we’re about to win. Then the bottom falls out. At the 2:28 mark, Idaho ends a nice drive by running it into the end zone to tie it up. Our offense then goes three-and-out and punts it. Idaho then goes 63 yards in five plays, ending with the winning 9-yard touchdown run with only :02 on the clock! I throw down my Denny’s menu-sized play chart in anger. Final: Idaho 21, New Mexico State 14 This was very, very bad. They certainly outgained us in yardage, but they had many turnovers and a ton of penalties. We could have won this one if our defense had bunkered down and put together a couple of stops. Instead, I’m left wondering about our team’s mental preparedness and our ability to close games. Remember, we let North Texas explode last week, too. We could be 4-5 now, and 4-2 in the conference. Instead, we are 2-7 and 2-4. Yards (rush-pass-total) IDAH: 120-362-482 NMSU: 45-185-230 NMSU Leaders Rushing RB Ty Blair – 12 rush, 41 yds Passing QB Howard Glover – 19-34, 185 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT Receiving WR Tyrell Hager – 6 ctch, 61 yds, 1 TD WR Juan Sims – 4 ctch, 40 yds Top Defenders DE Grant Ruth – 10 tackles, 3 assist, 2 sacks CB Bubba Keating – 8 tackles, 4 assist S Carlos Whitfield – 6 tackles, 1 assist, 1 INT (returned for TD) Players of the Week: Ruth. He had a monster game! Injuries No new injuries. Week 11 Recruiting We got three average recruits, and our recruiting class is starting to round out. We just need to land a QB and an ILB.

2005 Week 12
New Mexico State (2-7, 2-4) at Middle Tennessee State (2-6, 2-4) MTSU favored by 7 Weather: 76 degrees, fair Attendance: 20,300 (30,800) We travel to central Tennessee to try and salvage what is quickly becoming a terrible season. Murfreesboro is a tough place to play, though. Let's see what happens. 1st Quarter On MTSU's first drive, they fumble it away! ILB Butch Falvey recovers it at their 34 yard line. However, later K Toby Schwartz misses a 44-yarder. Damn it! MTSU gets it back, then fumbles it again! ILB Gabe Baldwin recovers it at our own 30. But then QB Howard Glover throws a pick three plays later. Damn it! MTSU ends up driving down the field and getting a touchdown on the turnover. Middle Tenn. St. 7, New Mexico St. 0 2nd Quarter Late in the quarter, at MTSU's 34 yard line, Glover throws another pick! Luckily, a few plays later CB Moe Camacho gets an INT in the end zone after the Blue Raider QB threw what looked like a Hail Mary pass on first down. Of course, two plays later Glover throws yet another pick – his third on the day. DAMN IT! MTSU gets a field goal after that. Middle Tenn. St. 10, New Mexico St. 0 3rd Quarter MTSU runs a nice clock-eating drive that ends in a rushing touchdown to go up by 17 points. We reply with a nice drive of our own, but we can only manage a field goal at then end, with about :52 left in the quarter. Middle Tenn. St. 17, New Mexico St. 3 4th Quarter MTSU fumbles the ball away again at the 11:20 mark at our 22. However, we can't do much with that. Later, they miss a field goal and we get the ball back at our 20. We fail to do anything the first three plays, but my offensive coordinator decides to go for it on fourth and 15! Of course, the pass is bad, and the Blue Raiders get the ball on our 15. They just need one play – a reverse around right end – to get into the end zone. That's how it ends, but not before Howard Glover throws his fourth interception of the game. Final: Middle Tennessee State 24, New Mexico State 3 Every week just makes me more depressed. The team seems to be regressing, especially on offense, and specifically our quarterback. Four picks. His TD-to-INT ratio was +1 coming into the game. Now that has vaporized. In retrospect, our defense is playing somewhat well, keeping opposing scores low, that North Texas game notwithstanding. But this offense is getting worse. I'm seriously thinking of ditching the run and shoot after the season. Yards (rush-pass-total) NMSU: 75-150-225 MTSU: 248-141-389 NMSU Leaders Rushing RB Ty Blair – 8 att, 74 yds Passing QB Howard Glover – 11-30, 150 yds, 0 TD, 4 INT Receiving WR Graham Leeuwenburg – 4 ctch, 45 yds RB Ty Blair – 2 ctch, 55 yds Top Defenders DE Grant Ruth – 19 tackles, 7 assist (Ruth is balls, seriously. He is big time for us) Crocker – 8 tackles, 1 sack CB Bubba Keating – 8 tackles, 3 assists Players of the Week: Blair and Ruth Injuries Nothing major. Week 12 Recruiting We landed an average QB and an ILB. That wraps up the scholarship players. Now we start searching for walk-ons. New Mexico players always get priority, unless they don't meet my SAT and GPA criteria.

Utah State (7-2, 6-1) at New Mexico State (2-8, 2-5) Utah State favored by 12 Weather: 55 degrees, fair Attendance: 13,500 (30,300) I stand on the sideline at Aggie Memorial Stadium in Las Cruces, meditating on the beating that we’re about to take from, along with Troy, the best team in the Sun Belt. We couldn’t beat Middle Tennessee State or Idaho. How are we going to pull off an upset in the Battle of the Aggies? Earlier in the week, I told my offensive coaches, “To hell with the run-and-shoot. This weekend, we’re going to run the ball a lot, just for the hell of it.” They looked at me like I was crazy. We’ve been running a run-and-shoot formation all year. It was too late to change the basic formation, and I was talking about running the ball, with almost no fullback and tight end help, with four receivers on the field. But I was in an F-it mood. Nothing was on the line anyway, except maybe my job. 1st Quarter On our first two plays from scrimmage, we throw the ball. That’s just a set-up to fool Utah State. Of course, it didn’t really do too much for us in this quarter. Utah State didn’t do much, either – thank goodness. Utah St. 0, New Mexico St. 0 2nd Quarter Right before the end of the first quarter, Utah State fumbles the ball away at their 31-yard line. After driving 18 yards, K Toby Schwartz gives us three points. On Utah State's very first play after that, our CB Bubba Keating intercepts a pass and takes it 68 yards to the house! Just like that we are up by ten points! Later, with eight minutes to go, Schwartz misses a field goal that would have put us up by 13 points. With :01 second on the clock, Utah State’s kicker misses one of his own, a 56-yarder. New Mexico St. 10, Utah St. 0 3rd Quarter Utah State gets a nice drive deep into the quarter that results in a field goal. Uh-oh, here we go again. New Mexico St. 10, Utah St. 3 4th Quarter My despair quickly goes away as our offense puts together a mighty good drive of our own, one that featured eight run plays (all by RB Ty Blair) and only two passes, the last of which was a 32-yard TD pass from QB Howard Glover to WR Dave Brummitt. We are up two touchdowns in the fourth quarter on Utah State! But of course, the “other” Aggies make a comeback, scoring a TD on the next drive. We reply, though, with another good drive (this one featuring the pass) that ends in a Schwartz field goal. Still up by ten. But, on Utah State’s very next play, their quarterback throws a bomb that ends up going 69 yards for a touchdown at the 5:20 mark. 20-17 NMSU. Damn it. We then go three and out and punt. They take the ball to our 44 yard line before they go for it on fourth down and our DE Grant Ruth blocks the pass with 1:30 left. We get it back and eventually run out the clock! Final: New Mexico State 20, Utah State 17 Unbelievable! Amazing what you can do when you mix up the run-and-shoot and focus more on the run. We didn’t win the yardage battle, but we had no turnovers and our defense made some fabulous plays. RB Ty Blair had the most rushing attempts and rushing yards of any player since I’ve been coach. Overall, it was a nice way to end the season. This game is making me think more about ditching the run-and-shoot, or using some kind of hybrid.
